Send us a textIn this episode of the Thrive in Construction podcast, Darren is joined by Andrew Carpenter to explore how timber construction can play a vital role in helping the UK achieve its Net Zero targets by 2050. Andrew is Secretary for the UK Government's Timber in Construction Roadmap Implementation Programme and Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association. He shares expert insights into why the construction industry must rethink its reliance on carbon-heavy materials like concrete and steel and shift towards more sustainable alternatives such as timber. He breaks down the environmental, economic and practical benefits of timber frame construction, from faster build times and reduced emissions to improved energy performance and solutions to skills shortages in the industry. The conversation also delves into the government's housing targets, the challenges of supply and planning, and how new regulations could shape the future of construction. Andrew highlights the cultural shift needed in England to embrace timber as a mainstream material and outlines the critical role of collaboration, innovation and leadership in driving change across the sector. If you're interested in sustainable construction, modern methods of building or the future of housing in the UK, this episode offers a compelling look at how timber can support growth, innovation and climate goals.Links:Andrew's LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/andrew-carpenter-a017a89Structural Timber Association: https://www.structuraltimber.co.uk/Darren: darrenevans.komi.io

Dr. Andrew Carpenter is a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Joe Baio and joins us to talk about using lasers to study protein-lipid interactions. Andrew's research seeks a better understanding of a protein called dysferlin, which plays a critical role in repairing muscle cells. Muscles undergo constant strain as they expand and contract, leading to tears in the sarcolemmas — thin membranes that surround muscle fibers. Dysferlin is responsible for recruiting vesicles to the site of these tears for a process called vesicle fusion to take place. Check out the episode for more about how laser technology is powering the discovery of dysferlin's underlying mechanisms, and to hear about how a postdoc is different from a PhD. This episode is hosted by Joseph Valencia and Grace Deitzler.
Five years ago, the Coalition government announced it closed the loophole that enables perpetrators of sexual abuse to hide assets in superannuation. Since then, nothing has changed. As such, Andrew Carpenter is on a mission to ensure that this changes — and soon. On this episode of The Boutique Lawyer Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks to Websters Lawyers senior associate Andrew Carpenter about how and why he started working with survivors of sexual abuse, the financial issues they encounter, the impact upon those survivors, and the broader legal and societal implications for perpetrators being able to hide assets in their super accounts. Mr Carpenter also delves into the specific changes that advocates like himself — and numerous foundations he collaborates with, including the Grace Tame Foundation — are pushing for, the likelihood that the new Labor government will introduce measures to close this loophole, the state of affairs in jurisdictions across Australia, and whether lawyers themselves can support this campaign. Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association, Andrew Carpenter chats to Timber Expo Event Director Nathan Garnett and MD of ARV Solutions and exhibitor Jim Roach about the most important event on the UK construction calendar. It is three days brimming with the latest products, innovations and developments across the timber sector - not just from the UK but from an increasingly exciting and diverse international market. Timber Expo covers a breadth of timber applications from timber frame, sawmills, merchants, glulam, SIPs, CLT, fixings and fastenings, timber cladding, doors/windows, mouldings, skirtings and flooring. There’s not a more comprehensive representation of the timber industry anywhere else in the UK. With wood taking over from steel and concrete as the architectural wonder material of the 21st century, the time is right to take your business to the next level and join the largest collection of timber brands this October 9-11th at the NEC, Birmingham.
Ruth Reed joins Andrew Carpenter this week. She is an architect with a career that spans public and private practice and the Planning Inspectorate. Ruth was the first woman president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and continues to represent the profession in planning matters. In this episode Ruth talks about moving from her background in architecture to planning. Top tips for anyone wanting to gain planning permission and why she loves timber frame so much. "I got into planning to defend the genuinely good."
Welcome to the launch of our very first podcast as host and CEO, Andrew Carpenter chats to the author of 'Modernise or Die' and new CE chair Mark Farmer about why he was asked to write the report together with his aims and aspirations for the whole of the construction industry going forward.
