Last week in crypto, we saw Bitcoin rise to $35k, and that trend continued with another year-to-date all-time-high this week, at the time of recording bitcoin is trading at over $36,000, passing the $36k mark. Along with other altcoins, Toncoin saw a price rise as well - to it's highest point in nearly a year. Right now, Toncoin is trading at $2.63, up over 20% from its price 30 days ago. It's suggested that this spike can be attributed to Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram who announced last week they would give away 10,000 premium subscriptions for the Telegram App. Durov specified in his announcement that he procured the premium accounts with TON tokens, totalling around $200k. Attendees at ApeFest, a convention based on the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT, returned for the event in Hong Kong this week. However, some attendees reported extreme eye pain after attending, with a small handful hospitalized. Yuga Labs, the digital assets company behind the event, shared a post on X, addressing the concerns and concluding this was likely the result of UVA emitting lights that were used at the event. London's City Minister, Andrew Griffith, is championing the role of crypto in London's financial portfolio. In a recent conversation with David Merritt, Griffith shared he perceives London as a potential hub for emerging domains such as cryptocurrency and AI, capitalizing on London's reputation for quality and trust. Griffith stated: “I think it builds naturally on our strengths in terms of things like tech and payments”.

Britain would have the power to regulate all cryptoassets under a proposal the UK financial services minister has added to a draft law before parliament, that will almost certainly pass. Andrew Griffith, re-appointed as City Minister on Thursday by Rishi Sunak, put forth the amendment to the financial services and markets bill, which parliament has begun approving. Shares in Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, have plunged more than 20% after a downbeat set of results from the tech giant as investor doubt Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the future growth of the meteverse, and revenues and profits decline. Meta's sales shrank by 4% in the three months ending in September to $27.7bn (£24bn), while profits halved. (Click here to read more) 2. Prime Minister Liz Truss and Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng are set to meet with the head of the Office for Budget Responsibility, known as the OBR and the country's independent forecaster, to discuss the situation. One of the reasons the markets reacted so badly to the chancellor's tax cutting plans released a week ago is that there was no accompanying economic forecast from the Office for Budget responsibility. Last night, the OBR confirmed that it was ready to produce an updated assessment of public finances to be published with the mini-budget a week ago, as is usual practice, but the offer was rejected. Diversity Votes aims to fill the gaps in understanding between Canada's diverse communities, the media they listen to, read and watch, and how that can affect how they will cast their ballot in the upcoming federal election. Canadians will be able to see demographic data at the riding level, focusing on majority-minority ridings. At the same time, news stories from these multicultural communities will discuss relevant issues about their communities and the federal election. Combining demographic and socio-economic statistics from Canada's majority-minority ridings, and an on-the-ground look at the ethnic media they engage with opens a door to appreciating the role of cross-cultural communication in politics. In 41 of Canada's federal ridings visible minorities are the majority. In 93 more, they make up more than 20 percent of the voters. These are powerful communities who look and listen for their own voices in the media. The Diversity Votes web site: Educates – Provides an in-depth understanding of riding demographic, economic, social and political characteristics, and how these interact with electoral strategies. Discusses – Creates wider awareness of how national and local issues are portrayed in community and regional ethnic media to increase accountability of ethnic-oriented media strategies. Connects – Allows for more informed discussion regarding diverse Canadians' voting patterns and issues and brings diverse voices into the national discourse. Holds Accountable – Provides greater accountability for the messages that candidates and political parties are sending to different groups. Andrew Griffith Recently, Andrew Griffith of Diversity Votes was on our show. Andrew Griffith, author and immigration expert and MIREMS Ltd. – Multicultural International Research and Ethnic Media Services – bring decades of experience in Canada's multicultural spheres. Your hosts, Lynn, Levon, Marie-Claude, and Marc (show video at bottom) Birth tourism in Canada, a much bigger issue than thought The issue of birth tourism is back once again in Canada. This photo of a Chinese baby holding a Canadian passport was posted by Baoma Inn, of Richmond B.C., one of several so-called birth houses or maternity hotels designed to enable women to have their babies here while ostensibly coming as tourists. New research shows the number of such "passport baby" births is at least five times higher than previously thought. (via CBC) Birth tourism, passport babies, or the related anchor baby, are used to describe the concept of foreign women coming to a country with "birthright citizenship" in order to have their baby declared as a citizen of that country. Canada is one of several countries which continues this concept, while the majority of countries around the world do not. A Canadian passport would give access to a wide variety of social benefits, and much lower university costs for the child. Thought to be an issue of very small concern, the federal government had felt it would be too costly to change the system to become more selective about given citizenship rights. This new information shows there are at least five times more "passport babies" being born than previously thought, and that the numbers are increasing every year Marc spoke to Andrew Griffith who discovered the new figures. He is an author and former senior official at Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Canada sanctions 17 Saudis linked to Khashoggi murder Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi speaks at an event hosted by Middle East Monitor in London, Britain, September 29, 2018. (Middle East Monitor/Handout via REUTERS) Canada has reacted to the murder of Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi, by putting sanctions of 17 Saudi officials believed to have had involvement in the man's murder. While the CIA and and Turkish investigators believe the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, M-B-S. ordered the killing, his name is not on the Canadian list. Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland made the announcement of the sanctions. In store, or online- How shopping affects your carbon footprint Consumers can bundle purchases and not choose fast shipping to reduce the emissions generated by their online shopping. (iStock) This past weekend saw a flurry of shopping in N. America, first was the American "Black Friday" sales, a concept which for better or worse has spread to Canada, and then Monday was called "cyber Monday" for online shopping bargains. Canadians are indeed big online shoppers , but what leaves a bigger carbon footprint- going to the store, or buying online? Lynn spoke to Anika Kozlowski, an assistant professor of fashion design, ethics and sustainability at Ryerson University in Toronto about the carbon emissions we leave depending on how we shop. There is considerable value in being a published author as a professional. In this episode, I talk to Michael Hanrahan, the Director of Publishing at Michael Hanrahan Publishing (MHP) in Melbourne. MHP helps professionals and small business owners self-publish their books. Michael has been in publishing for his entire working career, starting with Wrightbooks, a small publishing house and progressing to Managing Editor at John Wiley & Sons Australia. In 2003, Michael decided to become a freelance publishing provider, working for many of the major publishing houses, including Oxford University Press, Random House and RMIT Publishing. With experience in all areas of publishing from editing to printing to ebook and bookshop distribution, Michael started MHP in 2014. Today, MHP is a leading provider of small business self-publishing in Australia, with a focus on high-quality professional books that help those business people stand out from their competitors, sets them up as the experts in their field and helps them promote their business to a wider audience. Michael has been featured on radio, in magazines and in The Huffington Post Australia. He is also one of the original contributors to Andrew Griffith’s Smallville community, and has written a book on how to self-publish. We talk during the interview about all things writing, from structuring your book to the editing process and how to get started with your book. In This Episode: What is an end-to-end publishing service? I haven’t written a book but I think I’ve got it in me… Where do I start? Where to start in the actual writing process TIP: Why are you writing your book, and what are you actually going to write about? The central question for your book: What is the single question you’re trying to answer with your book? The importance of a brainstorming session What is a content list and how many do you need? Your first draft is just that TIP: Just write it down! The editing process is where we can make your book beautiful The second draft is when you should start sending it to people to review The importance of breaking it down into chunks Michael stresses you’re a lot closer to having a book at a scramble of 40,000 words than a perfect 5000 words How self publishing allows for you to really have your own voice Readers want practical advice. They’re not really after the’ academic fluff’ Michael is not a fan of the phrase ‘You should write as you speak’. He says, “writing is writing and speaking is speaking” but that doesn’t mean you can’t add your personality and tone to your book A sneak peak into the editing process The art of editing The different levels of editing The interior design process of creating a book The advantage of self publishing is the author gets to make the final decision with the design The most difficult part of the whole process... the cover The worst thing you can do for the cover design process The reason why Michael turns down some authors Writing the book is the easy bit, it’s the promotion phase that can be difficult A book is a business card on steroids The wrong approach to writing a book is thinking it will be a great revenue for earning cash The emerging field of audio books and the value of ebooks Michael Hanrahan Publishing Michael Hanrahan on LinkedIn Cathy Love on LinkedIn Nacre Website  Listen to more episodes here
