As Ali sups on gruel whilst watching Oliver as part of his Marathon Movie Challenge he chooses some of his favourite movie interviews from the past. Today it’s the star of Skins, Slumdog Millionaire, Lion, Dev Patel. This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Ali Geraets of Just for Kix. You may remember Just for Kix from Episode 48 of the podcast, where Aleksandra interviewed the company’s founder and executive director, Cindy Clough. Just for Kix is a youth dance organization that offers dance classes, summer camps, and special events to tens of thousands of youths around the country. Ali Geraets — Cindy Clough’s daughter — has been a part of the organization for many years and has designed costumes, led virtual dance classes, and has carried out a myriad of other jobs for the company. For Ali, the joy of dance is its versatility and variety — being able to wear a wide variety of “hats” and go where the need is. To be a utility player — a Swiss Army Knife. As Ali and many others know, there’s much more to dance than performing on a stage. On the podcast, Ali speaks to a wide variety of topics related to dance but, most importantly, how dance has afforded her many different opportunities that have allowed her to use her talents in many different ways. Moving Quotes: "Your career doesn't have to be over if you don't dance professionally... There are so many different paths you can take." "I think that's what's so awesome about my job — I'm incorporating what I love to do. I love dancing and definitely wanted to do the professional route... However, I also love teaching and all of the other things I get to do while maintaining a 'normal life.'" "Work hard for what you want, and you will surprise yourself." "Set your goals big and don't settle. It all comes back to hard work... I love kids that will work for it. If you can have a good work ethic, no matter what your talent is, you can get to where you want to get." "Expose yourself to as much as you possibly can. Expose yourself to as many people as you can... Ask for feedback. Ask others, 'What can I do better?' The more you want that feedback, the stronger you're going to become." "I think it's good for kids to not always win... I think it's good for them to learn how to be humble when they win and how to be a good sport when they don't win." "So much of [leadership] is confidence and risk-taking. I feel like a lot of women are scared to take the risks... We need to keep molding young children to be leaders and become what they want to become." "Those experiences [where you fail], as hard as they are at the time, can be the pivotal moments that happen to you that change the person you're going to become... You need those." Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:18: Ali gives a high-level overview of Just for Kix and how she fits into the ever-expanding organization. 7:27: Ali discusses her role, personally, has expanded since she joined the family business out of high school. 9:34: Ali, who has danced in several Super Bowl halftime shows, tells the story of how she got involved in these performances. 13:55: Geraets shares a humbling failure, which involved a performance on a nationally aired TV show. 17:02: Garaets discusses the many different options one can take as a job inside of the dance industry and how her job has allowed her to “wear many hats.” 20:11: Ali discusses her perspective on why there are so few women in arts leadership and how women can better pursue these types of roles. 21:01: Ali sheds some light on her personal role models and why taking in different perspectives is so important. 23:18: Geraets describes the ongoing nature of learning and why a nonstop willingness to learn is critical for success. 25:14: Ali shares some great insight on why she sees great value in competition. 30:00: Ali ends the podcast by giving some advice for young, aspiring dancers on the value of hard work and determination. Imagine 15 people to a tent, in a contained square mile, indefinitely quarantined, with limited food, drinking water, and space. For refugees living at Moria, the largest refugee camp in Europe, this is a reality. Moria is located on the Greek island of Lesvos and refugees can spend up to 2 years here waiting to enter Europe (all of this after an often long and dangerous journey fleeing violence in their home country).I met Ali Shams Eddin when I worked with @movementonthegroundofficial this winter break at the refugee camp. I was blown away by the “camp to campus” model of the organization and how it empowers refugees to help maintain the camps. In fact, that is how Ali came to work with the NGO, first coming to Lesvos, Greece as a refugee fleeing violence in Syria. With 20,000 people at Moria and limited resources and volunteers, we are reminded that being able to socially distance and safely quarantine is a luxury. The most marginalized and vulnerable populations will suffer the most from the virus, and it’s spillover effects into shutting down other areas of life.As Ali points out, refugees have been forced to “shelter in place” long before coronavirus and now is a time to come together and show solidarity to the people around the world who need our help and support the most. Please consider donating to @movementonthegroundofficial to help with their efforts. They continue to work on the frontlines of this crisis and provide critical services to the residents of Moria Camp. movementontheground.com

If your book hit the best seller list, as did Ali Zakarya's book "The Forgotten Art of Happiness - 52 Ideas That Will Change Your Life," you'd be pretty happy, right? But what if, on the same day your book was published, your beloved father had a stroke? That's exactly what happened to this week's guest, and he quickly discovered that emotions like sadness, grief, and fear often end up on the cutting room floor of public life so that nobody knew he was suffering. As Ali puts it: "It's not as happy as it looks." Join our new podcast Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tmvpodcast/ ... This week on The Muslim Vibe Podcast, Salim talks to Ali Jaffrey about his journey of dealing with same-sex attraction. Ali walks us through his life, telling us how he came to be aware of his attraction from a young age, how he coped (for a large period of his life in silence) and how he sought help. We learn about Ali's challenges and obstacles, and how they've led him to develop Strong Support, an organisation created to help Muslims who struggle with same-sex attraction but don't want to act on it. As Ali tells his story, we learn how he struggled and how he triumphed over his same-sex attraction. To read the article by Muslim Matters on Same-Sex Attraction discussed in the podcast, click here: https://muslimmatters.org/2016/08/22/from-a-same-sex-attracted-muslim-between-denial-of-reality-and-distortion-of-religion/ To learn more about Ali's organisation Strong Support, click here: http://strongsupport.co.uk/ or email contact@strongsupport.co.uk --- Please Note: The topic of conversation in this podcast is a particularly sensitive one and we wanted to approach it with as much nuance as possible. Ali approached us in November 2018, saying that he wanted to write a series about the struggle of people who experience same-sex attraction but don't want to act on their urges. Subsequently he decided he wanted to come in and have a conversation with us on our podcast about his experience and his journey. We're aware that Ali's worldview may not be the same as yours, but this is his story and a perspective we don't often hear much of. We are not attempting to provide a complete or holistic Islamic perspective on this but rather share a brother's journey based on his personal experience. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/themuslimvibe/message
When Ali Noorani visited Honduras, he met migrants desperate to escape poverty and violence for the presumed safety and opportunity of the United States. They started this journey with their dignity intact but were robbed of it through their experiences at the United States-Mexican border. As Ali sees it, this administration's hateful rhetoric and treatment of immigrants is robbing the entire nation of its dignity. The Forum was launched in 1982 to coalesce civil rights organizations in advocating for a more just immigration and workforce system. Its strategic approach sharpened when Ali Noorani joined as executive director in 2008. After President Obama was elected there was growing optimism about the potential for a path to citizenship and other meaningful immigration reform. When momentum for change built and then came crashing down in 2010, Ali had a realization that defined the next generation of the National Immigration Forum’s vision and strategy. He noted that while political parties talked about immigration in political terms, the rest of the country viewed it in cultural terms. In 2012, Ali began engaging with cultural influencers: faith, law enforcement and veterans’ leaders in traditionally conservative parts of the country. The resulting conversations about their fears, questions and concerns, have generated unprecedented trust. And they have uncovered the strong relationships that exist, away from public view, between conservative employers and their immigrant workforce. As a result, a collective willingness to stand for and with immigrant communities, has brought some of these leaders to advocate for pro-immigrant public policies on Capitol Hill. It turns out, that in Idaho, Mississippi and Arizona, it is immigrants, working for local employers, and starting their own businesses, that are bolstering local economies and forging deep community bonds. Don’t miss this important and hopeful episode of Power Station.
Show Notes: Ali Psiuk is a therapist and digital nomad. She runs her therapy practice from all over the world. This conversation might make you question your assumptions about what's possible in your business and life. As Ali talked about the freedom she's experiencing, and the awareness she has of her choices, I felt my own awareness expand. For a while now I've been planning a long travel adventure for the summer of 2020, and I kept saying "this is just a maybe. we'll see if it works out." Right after this interview, I told Ali: now I see that I've got to stop saying that. I've got to decide it's happening and then work out all the pieces. by waiting to see whether or not it will all fall into place I'm pretty much assuring that it won't happen. obstacles always come up. Ali agreed. Maybe you want to do more online work and you're not sure how to make it happen. Maybe there's another change you're getting ready to make. Maybe it's a travel adventure, launching a second business, radically shifting your hours, working in a different way, or moving. Listening to Ali's adventure story will help you see where the real limits exist and where you may be limiting yourself. Topics Discussed In This Episode: leaving her office behind and embracing a nomadic life working with a company that helps her coordinate all the details managing client relationships through the transition doing remote work ethically and legally Ali's daily rituals how she sets up her schedule and technology for remote therapy working through glitches how she draws clients into her practice money and fees (real numbers of course) writing and publishing her book, The Therapist Next Door Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/105
Megan Rapinoe reminds me of a modern-day Muhammad Ali. She’s a constant voice for equal rights whether the discussion is focused on gender, race or sexual preference. Rapinoe has two core values, working hard and having fun. On the field, she creates and finishes. Rapinoe celebrates, yet, does so without being a jerk. As Ali put it best, “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up”.

Prowess: Stories Of Leaders Who Have An Edge with Ashley Crouch
Positioning is key to creating an iconic brand. No one is more of an expert on how to build an iconic brand than Ali Brown. Are you an entrepreneur who isn’t quite sure how to “position” your business? Or maybe you aren’t sure exactly how your business reached the position it is in, but are also realizing that your ideal clients aren’t noticing you within the crowd? Ready to grab, or reestablish, your business’ position so you can emerge and stand out as a powerhouse extraordinaire of your industry? In Season One, Episode Two of the Prowess Podcast, Ashley interviews Ali Brown, noteworthy business coach for women entrepreneurs, who is also a dedicated catalyst for women in leadership. You don’t want to miss this episode as Ashley and Ali burrow into the nitty-gritty details of positioning your brand in a saturated market and how your authenticity will guide you toward being a stand-out leader. Ready to learn more? Tune in now! Make sure you listen carefully during minutes twelve through fourteen as Ali delves into the importance of strategic positioning versus your social media and public reach. As Ali says, positioning is more than just visibility, and you should want to draw people to you because of who you are and what you stand for. Her passion and vexing expertise shine through as she speaks about this topic and you don’t miss it. Your key takeaways from this episode are: Don’t confuse posturing with positioning. Posturing is artificial and meant to impress, rather than delivering the true essence of yourself and what you stand for. Positioning is being strategic with your message’s delivery and standing for what you believe in. Also, it prepares you to attract your ideal clients naturally and therefore, positioning creates alignment. Positioning doesn’t make you elitist, exclusive, or unlikeable, so don’t be scared to claim your space. Many women are afraid to make bold, provocative statements but you shouldn’t be scared to state your opinion. It may feel like you are sabotaging yourself, but your bravery will get you noticed. You should care less about “likes” and more about impact. Don’t focus more on social media than necessary. In-person networking, events, and genuine business relationships are just as important and often skipped or dismissed. Want to learn more? I received tarot readings from her during some interesting turning points in my life and really, really loved her fierce yet gentle guidance. We also talked about the tarot deck reviews Asali is doing, why she cares so much about community and representation and how she came to create tea blends that reflect some of the major arcana cards. Enjoy! Asali is a Black queer femme community healer and earthworker writing (https://www.asaliearthwork.com/blog/), practicing (https://www.asaliearthwork.com/tarot/), and creating (https://www.asaliearthwork.com/shop) at Asali Earthwork. Her healing work is rooted in using self-care as a means to disrupt systems of oppression and prioritize care for her community. :: About me and the Daydreaming Wolves podcast :: My name is Yarrow I am a queer writer, body worker, plant lover and ritual facilitator. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 8th study session on Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith's 2016 release, Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X. Ali passed away weeks after the book was released. Roberts and Smith, both Suspected Racists, present their interpretation of the genesis and abrupt end to Ali and Minister Malcolm's bond and how their friendship unraveled as Minister Malcolm's exile from Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam became permanent. Unfortunately, Ali was not able to repair things before Malcolm's 1965 assasination. Last week's segment detailed Ali's transition from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali after he captured the heavyweight crown. Elijah Muhammad officially changed Ali's name and welcomed him as a member of the NOI. This was simultaneous with Minister Malcolm's permanently dismissal. The authors rely on a litany of FBI documents to reveal the turmoil within the Nation about Minister Malcolm. Smith and Roberts also stress the extraordinary indignation targetting Muhammad Ali once his NOI affiliations became public. White and black people publicly castigated Ali - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called him the "champion of racial segregation." As Ali began to learn more about the global dynamic of Racism, he recalibrated his image and how he could use his stature as a world icon. Meanwhile, Minister Malcolm knew that he was targeted for death. Again, this text should highlight the importance of not name-calling black people. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p
Asali Solomon Reading for the 2016 Villanova Literary Festival
Disgruntled, Asali Solomon’s debut novel, is simultaneously ambitious and accessible. It’s a coming-of-age novel that grapples with questions of race, identity, and family, all heavy topics. But it’s always clear and direct and it’s often funny, and Solomon has a gift for making complicated feelings easy to understand.
