“As Henry stepped out of the door, he noticed a peculiar cloud in the west, too light in color to be rain, or even dust. He called Rosie to the door to look.” Henry and Rosie Ise, homesteaders in northern Kansas, faced a grave challenge coming from the land itself: “Grasshoppers--millions, billions of them--soon covered the ground in a seething, fluttering mass, their jaws constantly at work.”

Important Events April 14, 1844 Today is the birthday of the German landscape and flower painter Helene Cramer who was born on this day in 1844. Helen and her sister Molly were both painters in Hamburg, Germany. Their father, Cesar, forbade his daughters to become painters. And so, the two sisters didn’t start painting until middle age. Helen was 38 when she first picked up a brush. Her primary subject with flowers. After studying with other artists and painters, Helen and Molly exhibited their art throughout Germany and at the 1883 World's Fair in Chicago. Most gardeners say that their favorite painting of Helene’s is her work called "Marsh Marigolds and Crown Imperials." When Helen died in 1916, she was 72 years old. Both she and her sister are buried in Plot 27 of the "Garten der Frauen," Or the garden of women at the Hamburg Ohlsdorf cemetery. April 14, 2020 On this day the book, A Naturalist in the Amazon: The Journals & Writings of Henry Walter Bates was published. Unlike many of his scientist friends and peers, Henry was entirely self-taught. Early in his career, Henry met the great English naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. By 1848, Henry and Alfred left England to explore the Amazon Rainforest. While Henry stayed in the Rainforest for eleven years, Alfred returned to England after four years- though all of Alfred’s specimens and notes were lost at sea on his voyage home. After the ship he was on caught fire and sank, Alfred and the crew were rescued after ten days adrift in the Atlantic. During his eleven years in the Rainforest in Brazil, Henry collected butterflies, and he sent back a whopping 15,000 insect specimens - with over half of his collection listed as brand new discoveries. As Henry wrapped up his time in the Rainforest, he had survived both yellow fever and malaria in addition to many other uncomfortable maladies. Toward the end, it’s not surprising to read that Henry had grown weary of the enormous challenges of life as an explorer. He wrote, “I suffered most inconvenience from the difficulty of getting news from the civilized world down river, from the irregularity of receipt of letters, parcels of books and periodicals, and towards the latter part of my residence from ill-health arising from bad and insufficient food.” In the end - after a dozen years away from family, friends, and civilization - Henry Bates, the great Naturalist, could not ignore what had been building in his heart: he was lonely. He wrote, “I was obliged, at last, to come to the conclusion that the contemplation of nature alone is not sufficient to fill the human heart and mind.” In 2014, Henry’s Amazon notebooks were digitized, and they are now online to view from the Natural History Museum Library. And in 2018, Henry’s remarkable story was shared in an IMAX film called Amazon Adventure. Unearthed Words “With so many trees in the city, you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. This was the only truly sad time in Paris because it was unnatural. You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees, and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days, though, the spring always came finally, but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.” ― Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast Grow That Garden Library James Sowerby by Paul Henderson This book came out in 2016, and the subtitle is The Enlightenment's Natural Historian. In this book, Paul Henderson introduces us to James Sowerby - arguably one of the best botanical illustrators during the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries. One of the reasons James was such a successful artist, was no doubt due to his extremely high intellect. He was also one of the period's most knowledgeable natural historians. Paul introduces James this way: “This book is the story of a remarkable man. Unusual and his breath of scientific interest which he applied successfully; unusual in his desire to learn throughout his life and to impart his knowledge widely; unusual and going against the current practices by being at one - at the same time his own researcher, writer, illustrator, teacher, publisher and bookseller; unusual in his considerable output of innovative, high-quality and influential works; and unusual in becoming the patriarch of a successful line of natural historians.” I've talked about James numerous times on the show. He teamed up with numerous botanists during his lifetime, and his illustrations Grace the pages of many of their books. As for James, his Masterpiece was called Sowerby's Botany - a detailed 36-volume reference on the plants of England. Of course, the book also included over 2,500 hand-colored illustrations. This book is 336 pages of the first-time biography of an incredible artist and scientist: James Sowerby. You can get a copy of James Sowerby by Paul Henderson and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $40 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart April 14, 2017 On this day, the Beijing Crabapple Conference began. Visitors toured the Crabapple Garden during the conference, which featured many new American cultivars of crabapples like Brandywine, Cinderella, Molten Lava, Lollipop, and Madonna - all of which were created by the respected and admired nurseryman from Lake County, Ohio, Jim Zampini. During the conference, attendees were sad to learn that Jim had passed away at the age of 85. Today, Jim’s legacy lives on in his fantastic crabapple varieties like Centurion, Harvest Gold, Lancelot Dwarf, Sugar Tyme, and the Weeping Candied Apple. Crabapples are small, deciduous trees with densely woven branches that feature fragrant and beautiful white, pink, or red petals when they bloom in the spring. Self-sterile crabapples rely on bees and other insects for pollination. The trees rarely grow taller than 25 feet high. Generally speaking, it takes two to five years for a crabapple tree to bear fruit. Crabapples differ from standard apple trees in that they offer smaller fruit. Apples that are less than 2 inches in diameter are considered crabapples. If you want to plant a mini-orchard of Crabapple trees, space the saplings 6 to 15 feet apart. Group them on the closer end of the range if you are planting dwarf or more upright varieties. Crabapple trees are just beginning to come into bloom in our 2021 gardens. When they are in flower, few flowering trees can rival their charm. In Polish folklore, apple trees were considered dream trees. Sleeping under apple trees was thought to create a dream-filled sleep. And, placing an apple under a maiden’s pillow could induce a dream of her future husband. In English folklore, crabapple seeds or pips were thrown into the fire on Valentine’s Eve while chanting the name of your true love. If the pips explode, your love will be true and will last forever. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
In this conversation, Henry Kaminski Jr. dives into the importance of crafting your offer and understanding your ideal client (and why branding plays a huge role in that). We also talk about when he made the shift to become an expert. He hit a point when he decided that he would no longer be the guy to make a $50 logo for clients. As Henry mentions, if you solve bigger problems, people will cut you bigger paychecks. One of my favorite lines in this episode is as follows, and it really opens your eyes to the importance of branding in monetizing your skills or online business: “The quality of your brand will determine the quality of your clients, and the quality of your clients will determine the quality of your life.” CONNECT WITH HENRY Website: https://uniquedesignz.net/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebranddr/ CONNECT WITH CHRIS Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisbello_ Download my free guide on Productivity Hacks I recommend by visiting https://chrisbello.com/free
In a village of the Bavarian Alps, a young scientist named Henry Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz, a hunchback, piece together a human body. Frankenstein desires to create a human, giving this body life through electrical devices he has perfected. But he still needs a brain for his creation. Henry's fiancée Elizabeth speaks with their friend Victor Moritz about the scientist's increasingly peculiar actions and how he secludes himself. Elizabeth and Victor ask Dr. Waldman for help in understanding Henry's new behavior and Waldman reveals he is aware Dr. Frankenstein wishes to create life. Concerned for Henry, they arrive at the lab just as the scientist makes his final preparations. With a pulley system, Frankenstein and Fritz raise the operating table high in the room, moving it toward an opening at the top of the tower. The creature and Frankenstein's equipment are exposed to the lightning storm and empowered. The hand of Frankenstein's creature begins to move. The scientist triumphantly shouts, 'It's alive!'Frankenstein's Monster, despite its grotesque form, seems to be an innocent, childlike creation. Dr. Frankenstein welcomes it into his laboratory and asks his creation to sit, which it does. Thinking that it is not fit for society and will wreak havoc at any chance, they leave the Monster locked up, where Fritz antagonizes it with a torch. As Henry and Waldman consider the Monster's fate, they hear a shriek from the dungeon. Frankenstein and Waldman run down and find that the Monster has strangled Fritz. The Monster lunges at the two but they escape, locking the Monster inside. Realizing that the Monster must be destroyed, Henry prepares an injection of a powerful drug and the two conspire to release the Monster and inject it as it attacks. When the door is unlocked the Monster lunges at Frankenstein as Waldman injects the drug into the Monster's back. The Monster falls to the floor unconscious.Henry collapses from exhaustion, and Elizabeth and Henry's father arrive and take him home. Henry is worried about the Monster but Waldman reassures him that he will destroy it.With preparations for the wedding completed, Henry is serenely happy with Elizabeth. They are to marry as soon as Waldman arrives. However, Victor rushes in, saying that Doctor Waldman has been found strangled. Henry suspects the Monster. Meanwhile, the Monster enters Elizabeth's room, causing her to scream. When the searchers arrive, they find Elizabeth unconscious on the bed. The Monster has escaped.Maria's father arrives, carrying his drowned daughter's body. He says she was murdered, and the villagers form a search party to capture the Monster and bring it to justice, dead or alive. In order to search the whole country for the Monster, they split into three groups: Ludwig leads the first group into the woods, Henry leads the second group into the mountains, and the Burgomaster leads the third group by the lake. During the search, Henry becomes separated from the group and is discovered by the Monster, who attacks him. The Monster knocks Henry unconscious and carries him off to an old mill. The peasants hear his cries and they regroup to follow. They find the Monster has climbed to the top, dragging Henry with him. The Monster hurls the scientist to the ground. His fall is broken by the vanes of the windmill, saving his life. Some of the villagers hurry him to his home while the rest of the mob set the windmill ablaze, with the Monster trapped inside. At Castle Frankenstein, Frankenstein's father, Baron Frankenstein, celebrates the wedding of his recovered son with a toast to a future grandchild.
Bible Reading: Isaiah 40:27-31; Habakkuk 3:16-19"Henry!" Sally shrieked. "Come quick! He did it again!"Henry ran to the backyard where Sally was and saw his new fainting goat Sour Cream lying upside down in the grass--all four hooves sticking straight up in the air like popsicle sticks.Sally looked worried. "Do you think we should help him?""Nah," Henry told her. "Remember what Dad said? He'll get up in a minute. Something must have spooked him." As Henry and Sally watched, Sour Cream rolled over and struggled to his feet. Just then, their younger brother, Ezra, tiptoed up behind the goat and yelled, "BOO!" Down went Sour Cream.Ezra laughed and called out to Henry and Sally, "He painted again!"Henry grinned. "Not painted, Ezra. Fainted--like this." He demonstrated by falling over and sticking his feet up in the air.Sally giggled and fell onto the grass, copying Henry.Ezra tumbled after them and stuck his little feet straight up."What's this?" their dad asked as he stood over them. "I thought we only had one fainting goat, and now I have four! I guess I'll need toTICKLE them!""Nooo!" Henry, Sally, and Ezra laughed and squealed. When the tickle game was over, Dad said, "You know, Sour Cream makes me think of a Bible verse.""What verse?" Henry asked."In Isaiah 40:31, it says that if we put our hope and trust in God, He'll help us be strong and not fall down. Just like Sour Cream, you probably feel like lying down and giving up sometimes rather than face something that scares you. When that happens, remember that Jesus is always there to pick you back up. We all face hard and scary things in life, but we can trust Jesus to give us strength and help us through them. We can stand strong knowing that we have eternal life with Him and that He's always with us."The family looked over at Sour Cream calmly munching on grass."He looks fine now," Sally observed."No more painting!" Ezra added. Then he fell over and stuck his feet up in the air. Kelly HopeHow About You?Do you sometimes feel like giving up when you face difficult things? What's in this episode:Henry ball recently published his debut novel, Sister of Sorrows. It’s set in Louisiana and tells the story of woman’s struggle to provide for her family. In our conversation together, Henry shares that he always wanted to write a book about his challenging upbringing, influenced strongly by his indomitable mother, Delores. Henry explains the backdrop to Sister Of Sorrows, and as he says, "there was a story there I needed to know". Henry Ball didn't intend for it to be, but writing this novel was a very cathartic experience and helped him process some very difficult memories. The road to publication began with writing coach Lisa Tener, who then recommended he take it to editor Stuart Horwitz of Book Architecture.Stuart is credited with shaping the book into the great story it is today, and Henry Ball shares how he found the editing process to be a period of growth and learning, as it should be with all talented editors. For book design and formatting he went to 1106 Design, who took Henrys vision for the book and created a beautiful cover, which Henry talks about in our conversation. Henrys love and respect for his mother, Dolores, is evident in how he talks about her, and I hope my children talk about me this way when they are adults! Whilst Henry's father was on the scene, he was not a great example of fatherhood. As Henry says, his father exemplified the kind of father he didn’t want to be. We talk about balancing work, family and writing. Henry acknowledges how hard this is and that while things move slowly, but they do move. Not only is Henry writing sons of sorrows, the sequel to sister of sorrows, these also writing a non-fiction book with his business partner and co-owner of their publishing press, Storey press. As a result, he writes what he can when he can, rather than fulfilling our daily target. Whilst originally working as a discovery rights are, Henry ball has gravitated towards a more structured approach without lining, and he explains why he made this transition. At the time of our conversation, sister of sorrows hadn't been published. I'm pleased to say the book launched on 23rd December 2020 and you can find it on Amazon. He was the son of pious parents, and his mother converted to Christianitythrough the example and teachings of his father. From his early youth, Thomas was educated in religion and holiness. After his childhood, Thomas was then taught at a monastery and later at a school in London. After the death of both his parents, Thomas decided to finish his schooling by studying canon law. He was successful in his studies and was made secretary to one of the courts of London. After working for a while at law, Thomas decided todedicate the rest of his life to God, and began to work towards ordination. In all that he did, Thomas diligently applied himself and became well known as a holy and honest worker. His work came under the scrutiny of his friend King Henry II and, in 1157, Thomas was asked to serve as Lord Chancellor to the king. After the bishop of Canterbury died, Henry sought to elect Thomas to the position, and in 1162 this suggestion was accepted by a synod. Thomas warned the king that it might cause friction and conflict of interests, but accepted the position.Thomas served as bishop by seeking to help the people and develop his own holiness. He practiced many penances and was very generous to the poor with both his time and his money. As Henry's reign continued, he began more and more to exercise his hand in Church affairs. This caused many disagreements with Thomas, and after one especially trying affair, he retired for a while to France. When Thomas returned to England, he again became involved in a dispute with the king. Some of the king's knights saw this as treason, and as a result theykilled Thomas in his own Church. From St. Thomas, the modern Catholic can find inspiration to be courageous in their steadfastness with what they know to be right and holy. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency
The recent dispute between Greece and Turkey has again raised questions around the sustainability of the NATO Alliance. However, one of the Alliance's loudest critics in recent years has been US President Donald Trump, despite the United States' critical role within it. But are such criticisms political rhetoric or are they part of a wider strategic recalculation by the US as its national security concerns outside of Europe multiply?Meia Nouwens discusses this question with IISS–Americas Executive Director EJ Herold and Research Fellow Henry Boyd in this episode of Sounds Strategic. As Henry and EJ explain, there is increasing evidence that the US Department of Defense considers China, rather than a resurgent Russia, as its greatest strategic challenge for the foreseeable future. They also discuss how this rebalancing of US strategic priorities towards the Asia-Pacific will adversely affect the European member states of NATO, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Henry gets serious about documenting their work, Amanda finds synergies between the Jones' and the Pollocks' efforts on Wooleen Station. She voices the conviction that coming generations in the Southern Rangelands will be able to run livestock businesses that are successful on economic and ecological grounds - if the Government holds its nerve and opens up the public purse to support landscape repair.
As Henry says: during these times we are torn between Security and Freedom. Are we willing to pull together to keep everyone safe during these dark times, or are we more concerned about our freedoms and our right not to wear masks?
As Henry made his way through years of various foreign alliances and diplomatic efforts, it was his marital merry-go-round that really shaped his reign. Various family members and wives filled the court and sounded the opposition. In addition to a succession of wives through his reign, Henry VIII also had a wide variety of in-laws. From Kings and Queens to rising courtiers, Henry's in-laws provided him with eager supporters and unwelcome resisters, depending on his relationship with a particular wife.According to the rhyme, just one of Henry's wives survived the big guy: Katherine Parr. But actually there was another: Anne of Cleves. She turned out to be the most successful of all his ex-wives, turning her post-marriage life into a time of wealth and extravagance.

This is a segment of episode #214 of Last Born In The Wilderness “The Unforeseen: Neoliberal Ideology & Paving The Road Towards Fascism w/ Henry Giroux.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWgiroux Read Stephen Rohde’s review of Henry’s book ‘The Terror of the Unforeseen’ and purchase a copy: http://bit.ly/2LSXjzn In this segment of my discussion with Henry A. Giroux, McMaster University Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest and the Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy, and author of ‘The Terror of the Unforeseen,’ Henry explains how neoliberalism paved the way for the rise of far right ideologies and populists around the world. As demonstrated in the elections of, and policies enacted by, such leaders as Donald Trump in the United States, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, and Viktor Orbán in Hungary, a “neoliberal fascism” is emerging globally. As Henry elaborates in his book ‘The Terror of the Unforeseen,’ “neoliberalism creates an all-encompassing market guided by the principles of privatization, deregulation, commodification, and the free flow of capital. Advancing these agendas, it weakens unions, radically downsizes the welfare state, and wages an assault on public services such as education, libraries, parks, energy, water, prisons, and public transportation. As the state is hollowed out, big corporations take on the functions of government, imposing severe austerity measures, redistributing wealth upward to the rich and powerful, and reinforcing a notion of society as one of winners and losers.” (http://bit.ly/2LSXjzn) To further this point more succinctly, Henry states “neoliberalism became an incubator for a growing authoritarian populism fed largely by economic inequality.” (http://bit.ly/2Om8oL8) As societies become subsumed politically, economically, and culturally by the logic of a neoliberal ideology, the outcome is widespread social fragmentation and disintegration. This in turn has manifested into a groundswell of authoritarian and fascist politics in nations that have been traditionally defined as “open and free democratic societies.” As Henry challenges us in this interview, unless we critically address neoliberal capitalism and the impact this ideology has played in lives of countless human beings across the world, we cannot even begin to adequately understand and effectively resist this trend of rising of far right populist movements globally. Professor Henry Giroux is a regular contributor to a number of online journals including Truthout, Truthdig, and CounterPunch. He has published in journals including Social Text, Third Text, Cultural Studies, Harvard Educational Review, Theory, Culture, & Society, and Monthly Review. To celebrate National Poetry Day’s 25th anniversary, join writer, producer and comedian Henry Normal as he reads and discusses his favourite poems, and the lines of poetry that speak truth to him. Comedy writer behind hit shows The Royle Family and the Mrs Merton Show, Henry founded the production company Baby Cow with Steve Coogan in 1999, going on to produce BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated hits including Gavin and Stacey, Red Dwarf, The Mighty Boosh and Philomena. Sharing and discussing poems including Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley, Wait for Me by Konstantin Simonov and his own poems The House is Not the Same Since You Left, A Prayer for the Hesitant and Photos with My Son, he speaks about the ever-growing popularity of poetry in allowing us to share universal feelings such as loss, and how writing poems allows him to express his inner life with his family. As Henry’s writing and performing poetry led to a career in comedy, he talks about how becoming a father changed him, and how important it is for men to communicate their emotions. Tell Me The Truth About Life: A National Poetry Day Anthology, curated by Cerys Matthews, is published by Michael O’Mara Books. Madam Blanca (Fortune Teller) – Dani Rock Garrett (PI) – Neil Henry Livingston (Professor) – John Keeper of Arcane Lore – Kevin Rock heads out to do surveillance on the downtown salon. When he arrives he sees a woman leaving and decides not to follow her. Instead he sneaks up to investigate the house, which by some strange twist of fate is left unlocked. The house is sparsely furnished with paintings of woodland scenes covering the walls as well as Venus style statues. Meanwhile Madam Blanca and Henry head over to the library to investigate cults. They make a little bit of headway and Madam Blanca tells Henry to grab today’s paper. As Henry is grabbing the paper Rock comes in. Rock tells them about the house and Madam Blanca explains that she thinks Jennifer is the priestess of an earth goddess cult. She shows them the paper and says there seems to be a confluence tonight between the lunar cycle and the season. With that they head back to Henry’s house to gear up and grab snacks before heading out into the woods. They are able top find the clearing from Rock’s dreams and as they get closer they hear a woman chanting. When she sees them the woman disappears as a Dark Young takes shape. There’s lots of shooting and san checks. Are our investigators victorious? Today we're talking about how to Plan, Prepare and Refuse to Give Up with podcast host, branding expert, and author Henry Kaminski, Jr. Henry is the founder of Unique Designz, a full-service design, branding and digital marketing agency dedicated to helping authority brands; coaches, consultants, influencers, speakers and authors to scale their expertise and personal brands into profitable business models. Henry started twelve years ago as a freelance graphic designer, eventually growing his business into a mature, boutique brand development agency. His average client is typically worth $50-100K over a calendar year. But Henry remembers not so long ago when he was working for Fiverr. As sales reps, we know how it feels to want to get to the top as quickly as possible. We think it will be easy but then it is not long before we hit the hiccups. PLAN AND PREPARE Henry says it all comes down to preparation. He credits himself with once being the worst salesman on the planet. These days, Henry follows a very specific, tried and true script that he practices on a weekly basis. He does not deviate from that script and, as such, he is closing more and more sales. People perceive our value based on the questions we ask so planning ahead of time what to say is key. As Henry says “asking stupid questions only gets you stupid answers.” You will be perceived as an amateur. As a brand strategist and brand developer, Henry wants to position his clients to become subject matter experts. He wants people to be on the edge of their seats whenever one of his clients is speaking. It is all about positioning and that comes with preparation. Do your research on your client. Know as much about them before you make the call. This is a lesson Henry learned the hard way. You have to know the answers to the questions but you will want to challenge the person that you are speaking to. There is no value in telling the client what they already know. Let your client know that you may ask them some tough questions – questions they maybe haven't about thought before. Be sure they understand that your intent is not to pry but to get to the root of the issues in order to be the most helpful. BE INTENTIONAL Henry became intentional with his desire to start his own business after Hurricane Sandy blew through New Jersey and wiped out two of his biggest clients. Henry tried to continue living the lifestyle to which he had become accustomed but with a revenue loss of a quarter of a million dollars, it just wasn't possible. At the same time, Fiverr entered the design world and disrupted the entire industry. Henry couldn't beat them so he joined them. But it wasn't a sustainable position. He remembers a $120 paycheck for over 90 hours of work and he remembers earning $5 for six hours of revisions on a business card. And he remembers telling his wife that they needed to make a change. She got out the laptop and said, “Let's get to work.” Henry started working with a mentor, Russell Brunson. He couldn't afford to pay for the coaching program but he couldn't afford not to, either. So he maxed out his credit card and got on the phone with Russell. At the end of the one-hour call, they were both crying hysterically as Henry was hired on the spot to help with Russell's first book launch. That gave Henry the confidence boost he needed. It was the biggest sale he ever made and it led to another job with Russell a few months later. More importantly, Henry received the most important tidbit of insight from Russell. Despite all his fancy websites and great designs, Henry himself was nowhere to be found on any of it. His big personality was hiding behind the logo. That has all changed now and Henry doesn't regret it for a minute. He has found his lane. Content creation and working one-on-one with the clients is where he wants to stay. GET SEEN As a podcast host, myself, I can relate. People came to my webpage and listened to my podcast, but if they wanted to see me, they couldn't. It was all stock photographs. I had to put myself out there. I had to make myself available for my audience. We shouldn't diminish ourselves. We need to put ourselves first and refuse to give up. I used to be intimidated and afraid that maybe I didn't look good on camera or that seeing my brand was better than seeing the real me. Rather, your personal brand is just an offset of your business. If you are shy and timid, it will show in your messaging. Don't be afraid of yourself. Even the bigger brands, according to Henry, are coming out of their shells. The only difference between you and everybody else is you! You have to invest in your personal brand. It's critical. REFUSE TO GIVE UP Henry credits his unwillingness to give up to his parents who tried for 16 years to become pregnant with Henry. His Mom would call him her ‘miracle baby.' Henry believes that hearing that story while growing up – that his parents refused to give up for over 16 years – is what fuels his drive now. There are so many times when we try something once or twice and quit when it doesn't go our way. His parent relentlessly pursued their goal for 16 years. If you are feeling uncertain or hesitant when looking forward because of past difficulties, Henry recommends you remember that it is all a numbers game. He once went three months without one single sale. He kept looking back and beating himself up over what he might have done differently. His mentor reminded him that a rearview window is smaller than a windshield for a reason – because you are not going that way. Any setback is temporary. It's like a storm passing through town. It might be a struggle but it will pass. Have confidence in your preparations and see them through. “PLAN, PREPARE AND REFUSE TO GIVE UP” EPISODE RESOURCES Henry is very active on Instagram and can be found at thebranddr and on his website Unique Designz. On this inaugural episode, Andrew T. Walker introduces the ERLC’s latest podcast Countermoves: A Christian Review of Ideas Shaping Church and Culture. Countermoves is taken from the title of a volume by Carl F. H. Henry, one of the most influential 20th century theologians—a man who devoted much of his work to analyzing contemporary culture and the church’s place in it. Christian Countermoves in a Decadent Culture was published in 1986 and as the title suggests, reflects Henry’s call for the church to be both active and reactive, offensive and defensive, in how the church interacts with culture. Countermoves—both the book and the podcast—is about public theology and the church’s social witness in the culture that God has providentially placed it. And that’s what we want to do on this podcast. We want to look at the ideas shaping the culture and the church and to do so Christianly—meaning with an explicit reference to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. On this podcast, I’ll interview voices from all around culture—lawyers, theologians, historians, ethicists, public intellectuals, journalists, religious leaders, medical doctors, think tank employees, elected officials, you name it, and more. One of our guiding questions will be: What ideas are influencing the culture that Christians need to be aware of, and how do we anticipate and respond appropriately so that Christ is glorified, the gospel is made clear, and the church is strengthened? This will be a conversational podcast where I’ll be asking questions of leading thinkers. It’ll also be a monthly podcast, ranging anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Our goal is simple: We want to inform, challenge, and equip Christians to think critically about the ideas that are competing for culture’s affections and show why a commitment to Christ is always the true path. I hope you’ll stick around and be a regular listener of Countermoves as we explore ideas impacting Christians and seek to interpret them in light of Christ. As Henry famously wrote “If the church fails to apply the central truth of Christianity to social problems correctly, someone else will do so incorrectly.”
In this episode of Filmmaking Times we talk to Henry Martens about his amazing work producing wedding films. Henry shares detailed tips on filmmaking techniques, as well as business advice. Henry’s videos are so good, that they easily merit being called films. As Henry mentions in the video, all of his clients have a story to tell, and conveying that story is Henry’s main task. Henry interviews Margaret Cook, a serial entrepreneur, about making the most out of life. Margaret started her married life in an RV! And she's not afraid of learning either. Her zest for it gave her the opportunity to learn what she needed to know in order to build a coffee shop in her hometown. This is a fascinating story of someone not afraid to follow her own path, and not afraid to put in the time to learn. Henry learned how Margaret is making the most out of her current life. Margaret did a lot of things. She worked as a nurse when she was young. This woman even taught herself how to upholster furniture. She purchased and ran a shop to showcase her furniture. And she's been a hairdresser. Not only that, but she's also been a massage therapist. This woman has done it all! In her current life of setting up and running the coffee shop, she's had to learn a host of new things. This includes the legal aspects in her area. It includes deciding on what to add to the menu. Additionally, she needed to figure out her niche, or what type of clients she wanted. And…what about the competition? The cool thing is that she created this “room within a room”. The shop is called “Antiques and Coffee” and is located in Lismore, Australia. Margaret has a list of ongoing projects including her “Stage Two” which will be taking an extra lot that is next to her family's farm into another eating place. You can learn all about it by listening to the episode. Just click the play button and you can listen now. Margaret received inspiration the book ’The Life You Are Born To Live’ by Dan Millman. She really liked the advice in the book to “make good of bad” and that's what she did. Margaret's motto: Make the most out of it. We only live once. You should go out and seize the day. Hosts Phil Svitek (@PDSvitek) & Stephen Lemieux (@StephenLemieux) discuss the 2016 Movie, Hardcore Henry. A first-person action film from the eyes of Henry, who's resurrected from death with no memory. He must discover his identity and save his wife from a warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers. A man wakes up in a Moscow laboratory to learn that he's been brought back from the dead as a half-human, half-robotic hybrid. With no memory of his former life, a woman who claims to be his wife tells him that his name is Henry. Before she can activate his voice, armed thugs storm in and kidnap her. As Henry starts to understand his new abilities, he embarks on a bloody rampage through the city to save his spouse from a psychopath (Danila Kozlovsky) who plans to destroy the world.
