This episode covers a lot of ground as co-hosts Keane and Heather talk with Pastor Dave Totman. Dave shares about his experience growing up on the mission field, his own calling to missions, and invaluable suggestions for anyone considering serving in missions. He also unpacks what it means for a church to “hold the ropes” for its missionaries and the blessing of having his adult daughter now serving in missions. Listen to some of our previous Third Culture Kid episodes. “When [my dad] was told no, he trusted that what God was doing in his heart and in his life, that God was going to make it happen.” “Where we are weak, where sometimes we feel like or have even been told that we don't have what it takes, God can overcome any of that stuff.” “God can use me with my interests and my gifting in a very different way than my dad.” Third Culture Kids by David Pollock and Ruth Van Reken “It was not a couple of days or couple of weeks thing; this was actually a couple of years. It took a while for me to realize what God was doing.” “Any decisions have to be saturated in prayer.” Operation World and Joshua Project “The process of praying through and considering those different things and the conversations that that led to around the dining room table - that was where God was working and shaping our hearts.” “You open up your hands to God, and you say, ‘Anywhere, anytime, anything. I just want to be obedient. I'm going to follow You. You made me in Your image, and You've designed me to bring You glory, so I want to bring You glory, and I'll do it anywhere, anytime, I'll do anything to bring You glory.'” “Looking for wise counsel around you [...] that's a really vital piece of discerning God's will.” “We are called to reach our neighbors, we are called to reach our wider community, but we are also called to be the Gospel light around the world.” “We've been the recipients of seeing a church be faithful to [holding the ropes].” “We need to know our missionaries, we need to care for our missionaries, and that's way beyond caring for just their financial needs.” “One way to support is to read the prayer updates carefully, and then we're all humans, so let's engage at a human level with compassion.” Dave's suggestions if you're considering missions: Pray! Ask others to pray with you Consider taking a short-term mission trip Read missionary biographies Serve where you are “For a boat that's tied to the dock, the rudder is worthless [...] Once you push off, the rudder can direct the boat anywhere. I don't want to be a boat tied to the dock asking God to lead me.” What's changing our lives: Keane: Lego sets Heather: Instagram feed of only those you're following (here's how!) Featured speakers: Ambassador Patrick Theros, Alia Moubayed, Dr. David Pollock, and Dr. Jean-Loup Samaan. Synopsis: As the Russian invasion of Ukraine enters its second year, the conflict has decisively shaped political and economic issues in the Gulf. The rapid increase in oil and gas prices in the aftermath of the invasion has come as a boon to the GCC states, giving some of them a sizable budget surplus for the first time in years and easing pressures for economic reform. High oil and gas prices have also increased the Gulf's strategic importance, giving its governments greater stature in international affairs. Both the United States and China have taken high-profile visits to the Gulf in the past year, encouraging GCC leaders to lower oil prices and increase strategic partnership. Each of the GCC capitals, and Riyadh and Abu Dhabi in particular, have used their newfound status to seek concessions from the two superpowers, playing them off against each other for their own interests. At the same time, Iranian assistance to Russia during the conflict—providing the Kremlin with Iranian-made missiles and drones—has dashed early hopes that the United States and Europe would attempt to renegotiate the JCPOA in order to allow Iranian oil to flow once more. Instead, Tehran's crackdown on its ongoing protest movement has made the agreement politically untenable in the West. Negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have also failed to make progress in resolving the two rivals' longstanding disputes, although further negotiations are planned for the coming year. What does 2023 hold for the Gulf? Will the region's windfall from high hydrocarbon prices decrease the odds of successful economic diversification? What role will the United States and China play in the region? Will Iran's political crisis make it less likely to engage in regional adventurism, or will it seek to fight foreign enemies to distract from its problems at home? At a time of relative prosperity, could intra-GCC tensions flare up once again?
Tuesday is Marcus Freeman's birthday, so we talk about what presents we would get him. We also discuss plenty of other topics, including: *JD Bertrand comparing Notre Dame linebacker Jaylen Sneed to for former Irish linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah *Will college football national championship games be more competitive when the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams in two years? *ESPN's David Pollock throwing shade at Nick Saban with Saban sitting next to him at halftime of Monday's championship game *Would we trade the Dallas Cowboys losing to Tom Brady and Tampa Bay in the first round of the NFL playoffs if it means they fire Mike McCarthy and hire Sean Peyton? *Thoughts on the Dan Campbell-led Detroit Lions Learn more about your ad choices.

Featured speakers: Ambassador Patrick Theros, Dr. David Pollock, Dr. Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, and Dr. Banafseh Keynoush. Synopsis: As the Middle East awaits the outcome of the Vienna talks on reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and the P5+1, Gulf states and other powers in the Middle East engage in multi-party consultations on the future of the region. All are preparing for a new geopolitical stage to be set when, or if, Iran rejoins the regional economy and any changed stipulations of a new JCPOA. Should these talks succeed, Iran will likely seek to maintain (or even grow) its influence in the region, while enhancing its trade and economic relations. Various GCC states have anticipated this shift in the geopolitical conditions by opening talks with Tehran. In late 2021, the UAE's national security adviser, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, visited Tehran while the Saudis and Iranians have had an ongoing direct dialogue for a year in Baghdad. The United States has played a role in improving cross-regional talks as well. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently visited Morocco, Algeria, Bahrain, UAE, and Israel. Blinken sequentially met with the foreign ministers of the UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, and Israel in Tel Aviv, and leaders of Iraq, UAE, Jordan, and Egypt met in Aqaba a day before. The war in Ukraine has also introduced new possibilities for improved regional relations, as it disrupts energy, trade, and economies in general. Should these JCPOA talks prove unsuccessful, however, the Gulf states may be more hesitant to continue their de-escalation efforts with Iran. Growing normalization with Israel could also impact some GCC relations with Iran, regardless of whether a new JCPOA is agreed or not. The UAE, Morocco, and Bahrain signed normalization agreements with Israel in 2020 and 2021, and other Arab countries have seemingly warmed to the idea of opening channels of communication as well. Ongoing proxy conflicts between Iran, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, especially in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, have left the geopolitics of the region in an even more complicated position, with a strong potential for change in historic alignments and rivalry in the region. Whether the new JCPOA is signed or not, the Gulf states will see a direct impact on the geopolitics of the region, with the balance of power potentially shifting, and creating a potential for increased conflict. How will the new geopolitical scene impact seemingly strong bilateral Gulf ties? Will it create new relationships? How do the GCC states see their relationships with Israel and Iran playing out? Will the U.S. continue to play the major security role in the Gulf in a post-JCPOA situation? How do other international parties see the situation evolving?

It pays to keep the boss relaxed and on their game, just ask NZ golf caddy Sam Pinfold, who's hit the jackpot at the British Open in Scotland. Wellington-born Pinfold caddied for Australian Cameron Smith in what was a come-from-behind victory over local favourite Rory McIlroy at Saint Andrews. The Queenslander, who sports a mullet, broke Tiger Woods' scoring record in the historic victory. One of Sam Pinfold's buddies, David Pollock from the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, tells Lisa Owen it's Sam's easy going approach that makes all the difference. And he had such a good feeling the pair might win, he set his alarm especially for the occasion.
David Pollock is one of Australia's most prominent regenerative pastoralists. He and wife Frances have featured a few times on the award-winning ABC TV series Australian Story. But I'm more fond of telling people these days they've featured a few times on this podcast! David's also known for his brilliant book, ‘The Wooleen Way: Renewing an Australian Resource'. That was aptly described as ‘The astonishing story of reviving the oldest land on Earth'. When the book was published a few years ago, the Western Australian State Minister for Regional Development, Agriculture and Food (& now Hydrogen) paid David and Frances a visit to talk about it. A few years on, just last week, the Minister returned with a big announcement. This was going to be a shorter episode about just that – that was big enough. But when David and I were talking about that, we ended up talking about some other big changes – in himself. So you'll find the first half hour of our conversation is on the significant array of developments afoot right now. And the rest, the personal transformations at the heart of them all. This conversation was recorded online on Thursday 3 March 2022. Central Station - Stories from Outback Australian Cattle Stations
Wooleen Station is not your typical cattle station. And, it's not so much Wooleen itself that's different, but the way in which it's managed.Within months of taking over management of Wooleen, David began implementing a plan to completely destock the station. It was a move he believed was critical to ensure the long-term sustainability of the station.Over the past 15 years David has implemented a number of management techniques which have drawn both praise and criticism, been featured on two episodes of the television show Australian Story, and resulted in a book.In part 1 of my chat with David, he takes us along the journey as to how and why he made these decisions. This episode is brought to you by Boarding Schools Expo Australia. The Boarding Schools Expo takes the time and stress out of finding the right school to meet your family's needs, by bringing schools to major centres where they are all under one roof the Boarding School Expo gives your family the chance to discuss your educational needs directly with representatives of the school. In 2022 they're launching Boarding Expo 365, a virtual Expo reaching families across Australia- whether you're up in the Kimberley, flying choppers east of Normanton or making brie on King Island - Boarding Expo 365 will showcase schools right from your kitchen table ! In this week's episode we have a change to the usual format. Here we have three TCK experts in the discussion: Amanda Bates and Michael V Pollock and me, Jen Mohindra. We address the things that TCKs want to know most about resolving their issues. Is therapy the right route or is coaching a better option? And what's the difference between the two? Jen Mohindra, the host of People Like Us, is a TCK who grew up between the UK, Australia and Kenya (with a bit of backwards and forwards thrown in there for good measure!). After a career that included hospitality and banking, and another move from Sydney to London in her 30s, Jen found that she was struggling with feelings of restlessness and rootlessness. The work she did with a coach was so profoundly successful in enabling her to settle and find peace that she retrained to become a coach herself. Jen works with adult TCKs, to help them leverage their TCK journey and find their place in the world. For almost two decades, Amanda Bates has provided clients with a solution-focused approach to design, develop and execute their professional goals. As a career counselor and consultant, she utilises her creative blend of experience and skills to help clients intentionally design the careers of their choice. Amanda is also the founder of The Black Expat, where she leads and creates content focused on the Black and Brown experience abroad. She is a frequent speaker on expat topics related to diversity & inclusion, third culture kids and career development. Michael Pollock, son of the late Dr. David Pollock, is an ATCK educator, speaker, author, trainer and coach who grew up mobile in the US and Kenya. With a Masters in education he and his family relocated from the US to China where he served as a principal and then created Odyssey, a TCK development organization, for the ISC schools. Michael returned to the US in 2012 to create Daraja, an adult TCK (ATCK) focused non-profit and for two and a half years brought it under Interaction International which he directed. He continues to direct Daraja, which separated from Interaction in 2021, to focus on training, coaching and consulting collaborations with local and global TCK care initiatives. Co-author of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds 3rd Ed., Michael envisions a world where TCKs thrive, discovering unlimited potential.

David Pollock is the Executive Chairman at Chess, a company he founded in 1993 that is named after his two eldest children — Charlie and Jessie. Chess was #1 in The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2018, and has been high up in the top 100 rankings for the last 12 years. David has also been awarded 'Best Leader' by The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2017 and 2018 and won the 'Innovation in Business' for his unique happiness training in 2016, along with many other national and regional awards. Today, Chess employs over 300 people throughout the UK, serving over 27,000 business customers in the Information Communications Technology sector and has completed over 100 acquisitions. I was fascinated by the level of focus that David has consistently Put upon the people, culture, and their wellbeing. And at the same time, how they expect incredibly high standards of performance from everyone in the organisation and hold people firmly accountable to them. Outside of work, David is an active supporter of the Prince's Trust and has been Chairman of the Northwest Development Committee since 2010. He's a Vice President of East Cheshire Hospice and was a Trustee of Active Cheshire, a charity that encourages health and wellbeing from 2012 to 2017. Before we get into the episode, let me talk to you about The CEO SleepOut which is a charity I'm proudly supporting right now. CEO Sleepout UK is a national movement and a registered charity that aims to unite business leaders – those with the influence and power to do things differently – behind a call to end homelessness. They hold CEO Sleepout events in cities across the UK, from Alnwick to Portsmouth, and everywhere in between, unlocking understanding, empathy and raising big money, the majority of which is ploughed back to charities working tirelessly on the front line of homelessness in each host city. So far more than 3,800 executives have raised £2,900,000, providing over 100 charities with the funds to change countless lives. If you want to get involved there are a number of ways to do so: Listen to episode 55 where I speak with their CEO, Bianca Robinson. Visit their website via the link below. In recent years, public support for the two-state solution has continued to erode on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian divide. Each party suspects that the other has completely given up on the idea, further weakening the political will and public trust needed to preserve it. Can leaders lead the public on this issue, or does the public lead them? Will Israel's new government attempt to narrow these points of difference, and are the Palestinians still open to such gradualism? In this episode, David Makovsky hosts Khalil Shikaki, David Pollock, and Tamar Hermann for a discussion on what polling can tell us about these issues. Where does current Israeli and Palestinian public opinion fall on the two-state question, and what deeper insights does the data hold? Khalil Shikaki is the director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah and a senior fellow with the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University. David Pollock is the Bernstein Fellow at The Washington Institute and director of Project Fikra. Previously, he served as senior advisor for the broader Middle East at the U.S. State Department. This month, the Kurdistan in America podcast is honored to have Dr. David Pollock as its guest. Dr. Pollock is the Bernstein Fellow and Director of the Fikra Forum at The Washington Institute. He sheds light on his experience working as a regional expert on the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff during Operation Provide Comfort, his visit to Baghdad at the height of the conflict in December 2006, and his first visit to the Kurdistan Region. Additionally, Dr. Pollock shares his insight on the evolution of the US Kurdish policy throughout the years and across administrations, including the current one under President Biden. He also gives his views on the US-Iraq Strategic Dialogue and the situation in Sinjar.
A decade after a series of uprisings swept across the Arab world, what do citizens in these countries think about prospects for democracy, reform, and change? How come the Arab monarchies emerged from the regional upheaval in more stable condition than their republican counterparts, and to what extent did public opinion play a role? How do citizens in Arab countries view Israel? Dr. Sarah Feuer, INSS research fellow, sat down to discuss these and related questions with Dr. David Pollock, senior fellow at the Washington Institute and the author of “The Arab Spring Turns 10, Through the Prism of Public Opinion,” featured in the current volume of INSS' flagship journal, Strategic Assessment.

The Jones brothers, inspired by Col Stanton, are introducing erosion control, land interventions at Boogardie Station, out of Mt Magnet, WA. As Henry gets serious about documenting their work, Amanda finds synergies between the Jones' and the Pollocks' efforts on Wooleen Station. She voices the conviction that coming generations in the Southern Rangelands will be able to run livestock businesses that are successful on economic and ecological grounds - if the Government holds its nerve and opens up the public purse to support landscape repair.
David Pollock reminds you that basic skincare is not seasonal. Wash and moisturize your face every day to reduce breakouts and prevent pores from enlarging. Cleanse your face every morning to clear away the dead skin cells and perspiration. Proper nutrition and fitness improve skin health. The skin is your largest organ. The care you give your body shows on your skin. Find a skincare brand that works for you and stick to it. David joins Lisa to discuss the importance of caring for your skin. Think about all of the personal care and beauty products you use every day, starting from brushing your teeth in the morning to applying your moisturizer at night. You could easily be applying 100 or more throughout the day. But, how often do you pay attention to the ingredients in those products? How often do you read the label of your favorite shampoo or night cream? The toxic ingredients in personal care products can have hugely negative effects and create a toxic overload. The top 10 to look for include the following:Parabens: there are many different types of parabens, so look for any variation of this word.PEGs and Glycols: shampoos, antiperspirants, body wash, and can even be found in toothpaste.Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates: extremely irritating to the body.1,4 Dioxane: cancer-causing ingredient that is also found in sulfates and glycols.Triethanolamine (TEA): respiratory toxin/allergen. Phthalates: endocrine disrupting properties.Synthetic Fragrence: becomes a catch-all, so even if a product doesn't list "glycol" or "sulfate" it may still contain it under the guise of frangrence.Synthetic Dyes: look for companies that use natural color options like beets. Triclosan: U.S. FDA just changed ruling and no longer allows these in anti-bacterial soaps.Polyethylene Beads (plastic beads): the U.S. has finally banned these.Men also need to pay attention, even if they may not think of products as "beauty" related. Body wash, shampoo, conditioner, antiperspirant, hair gel/spray, toothpaste, and cologne all may contain dangerous ingredients. Fortunately, there are products with clinically-proven results but without all the harsh ingredients. You need to be responsible for your own health, so make sure you take a very close look at what your products contain.Listen in as David Pollock, an expert in the cosmetics industry, joins hosts Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis to explain why these ingredients are so harmful.

David Pollock is one of Australia's most prominent regenerative pastoralists. You may have seen David and his wife Frances on ABC TV's Australian Story. You may also have heard my previous conversations with them on this podcast. The most recent of those was when David's brilliant book was released, almost a year ago. It's called ‘The Wooleen Way: Renewing an Australian Resource', and it's been described as ‘The astonishing story of reviving the oldest land on Earth'. Well, a lot has happened in a year, so I'm back at Wooleen Station to see how David and Frances have been experiencing it. David's book has been shortlisted for the Premier's Prize for an Emerging Writer, carbon trading has been formally introduced on pastoral lands in Western Australia, and of course COVID-19 has happened. We also talk about one of David's key proposals in his book, that we didn't cover last time – how mining could be harnessed towards the regeneration of country. There are a few other updates on our chat from last year too. And while it's barely rained here in the last year, unfortunately, this meant we got a look at how the enduring health of the landscape was holding up. David and I took a walk around the Station museum and workshop on a cool afternoon a little over a week ago, for this conversation. Title slide: The Wooleen Station Homestead. Josh, Jude, and Brad sit down to preview the upcoming game between the #10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and #18 Virginia Cavaliers. What actually happens is maybe not exactly that. Among the many things we talked about that had nothing (or very little) to do with the game: *More Georgia talk. *David Pollock. *Fake injury myths and the bullshit artists that spin them. *Cable TV delay. *Brady Quinn in the booth but actually in a studio. *The Boston College game. *Michigan analysis. *Jim Harbaugh's crutch. *SkyCam. *NBC as a puppet of Jack Swarbrick. *Probably more? I mean of course we talked about the upcoming game, like: *The offensive line. *Running the football. *What Chris Finke and Michael Young mean this week. *Probably not a word about Notre Dame's defense. *Virginia's linebackers. *Predictions. *And we went an hour without bringing up something that is probably important (and then Jude got mad). It was a different show - which is really saying something. Maybe don't rate and review this show. GO IRISH! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

David Pollock is one of Australia's most prominent regenerative pastoralists, and he's now the author of a new book that's been described as ‘The astonishing story of reviving the oldest land on Earth'. It's called ‘The Wooleen Way: Renewing an Australian Resource'. Many Aussies will have seen David and his wife Frances on ABC TV's Australian Story. They've appeared four times so far, such is the way their story has captivated the country. They've also been guests twice on this podcast. This time, though, is the first time in extended conversation with David, book in hand and on location at Wooleen Station. ‘The Wooleen Way' is hard-hitting, expertly researched, and a great tale, with a compelling and holistic outlook. On the back of Charles Massy's book ‘Call of the Reed Warbler', this may just prove to be the next critical milestone in the shift towards a regenerative culture of caring for country, and the communities that comprise it. Western Australia's Minister for Regional Development, Alannah MacTiernan, has already visited Wooleen in the wake of the book, and distributed numerous copies among departmental staff. Which is all the more fitting, given pastoral leases operate on public land, and on so much of it (nearly half of WA alone). This is arguably our most vital renewable resource - the effective functioning of the vast majority of this country, and other regions like it. And we're losing it. But it doesn't have to be this way. ‘The Wooleen Way' is, on the one hand, the story of David's life and the remarkable regeneration happening at Wooleen Station. And it is about so much more than that. As David sees it, “If we can only get regeneration on Wooleen, then we'll have failed.” Join David as he shows Anthony around the Station to talk about the book, his story, and some of the how and why behind the regeneration of a country. Where do you call home? In this episode, we speak to Alice Wu, an intercultural consultant at Cornell University. Alice is the creator of a series of films about Global Nomads and Third Culture Kids: people who have spent their developmental years living in multiple countries, building relationships to many cultures “while not having full ownership in any” (David Pollock). Alice discusses the challenges and benefits of growing up this way, and what people of transcultural backgrounds have to offer our increasingly interconnected world. Alice’s films are available at https://sales.lrc.cornell.edu/collections/intercultural-materials “Global Nomads in the Age of Technology is a fascinating series of interviews with today’s university students who come from a wide range of internationally mobile childhood experiences. It not only showcases the increasing cultural complexity of those called Global Nomads/Third Culture Kids, but also helps us answer the question: “Has technology changed the GN/TCK experience?” It is intriguing to hear fresh insights into how they perceive and use the wealth of their individual stories.I highly recommend this for all who want to know more about how it is for today’s youth who are growing up among many different cultures.”– Ruth E Van Reken, co-author, Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds, 3rd edition

“Cattle, sheep, prosperity, first Australians, land on a knife edge, the politics of food and a struggle for future sustainability. An outback eco-tourism experiment that challenges a hundred years of European orthodoxy.” That's from the flyer at the remote Wooleen Station, where David Pollock and Frances Jones have radically destocked the land to regenerate it, after more than a century of degradation. Despite a moving story of nearly going broke, dealing with out-dated laws, and the politics around re-introducing a natural predator, they're finding ways to continue their vital project, and producing some really incredible outcomes. So it was great to visit them, learn more about what they're up to, and what it means not just for them, but for the broader transition to sustainable, flourishing societies. Joining Anthony for a chat in the garden of the beautiful Wooleen Homestead, here's Station Co-Manager, Frances Jones. The stinging exchanges appeared to end with the conference, but when Pollock he returned home he realized he'd been targeted for what he called "harassment."

How often do you read the label of your favorite shampoo or night cream?Think about all of the personal care and beauty products you use every day, starting from brushing your teeth in the morning to applying your moisturizer at night.

For centuries it's been widely accepted that the composer Daniel Purcell was the younger brother of the more celebrated Henry. Now, though, it's thought that they may actually have been cousins rather than brothers. Apart from a much loved Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis, Daniel Purcell's music has remained largely in the shadow of his older relative, but thanks to a handful of recent recordings, it's now being considered much more on its own merits. Lucie Skeaping looks at the life and music of Daniel Purcell, with performances from the Parnassian Ensemble, Chichester Cathedral Chor, and violinist Hazel Brooks and harpsichordist David Pollock, who have recently released some of Purcell's previously unrecorded chamber music.
