Nicole Perlroth (@nicoleperlroth) is an award-winning cybersecurity journalist for The New York Times and bestselling author of This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends: The Cyberweapons Arms Race. What We Discuss with Nicole Perlroth: The startlingly simple reasons why most nation-states now resort to using cyberwarfare tactics before conventional weaponry in acts of aggression -- to increasingly devastating effect. How industries are so interconnected that there's almost no way for a cyberattack to target one victim without endangering countless others on all sides of a conflict (which is why you may have Putin to blame if there's a Cadbury chocolate egg shortage next Easter). Why leaving the security of 85 percent of its critical infrastructure up to privatization makes the United States especially vulnerable to cyberwarfare attacks. The massive amount of intellectual property that's been lost to hackers -- from the formula for Coca-Cola to information that would allow China and other rival nations to catch up with the United States in the nuclear arms race. What Nicole believes the US should do to push back against these threats and the governments that perpetrate them -- and ensure that it's not inadvertently one of them. And much more... In today's episode, I'm sharing my morning coffee with Nicole Caruso. Well, let's be honest, it's more like cup of coffee #3 because life with a two year old and a two month old involves very little sleep for me. Today's episode is the first episode I've recorded since welcoming our daughter, Ada Caeli, on March 30, and friends, it's so good to be back! I can't wait for even more conversations on the feminine genius with you this summer and beyond. You might remember that Nicole was a guest on the Letters to Women podcast last July when she was still in the book-writing trenches and the Worthy of Wearing movement was just starting. We're sitting down again because Nicole's new book, “Worthy of Wearing” was just published with Sophia Institute Press. Today, we're talking about why it's important that this new book features photos of real women wearing their own clothes, how it celebrates the beautiful diversity found in the feminine genius, and what modesty means for our daily lives as Catholic women. Yep, we're tackling that ‘m' word, and I think you're going to love what Nicole has to share about the topic. If you're tired of one-size-fits-all advice when it comes to our wardrobes and modesty and you're ready for a refreshing conversation and a mindset shift around the way we dress daily, sister, this letter is for you. Topics we talked about in this episode: What “Worthy of Wearing” means Why it was important for Nicole to create a book that featured photos of real women wearing their own clothing What Nicole's journey of self-worth has looked like How Nicole's daughter inspired her to dress in a way that honors her own dignity and belovedness What modesty means in our daily lives as Catholic women Resources you should check out after listening to this episode: Get your own copy of “Worthy of Wearing” Follow Nicole and Worthy of Wearing on Instagram Check out Nicole's website and the Worthy of Wearing website, too! What You Will Learn in This Episode: Host Nicole Mahoney’s experience with the challenges of equity, diversity, and inclusion What Nicole’s team is doing to live out the ‘equitable’ core value within their company What we can do to explore, understand, and act on the topic of diversity in the travel and tourism industry The lessons Nicole learned about diversity in applicant pools during the hiring process How Nicole’s team took a proactive approach to diversity in their company and industry How the team was living out their core values, and where they were falling short Why addressing systemic racism in your organization will impact existing employees, future employees, and clients alike Addressing the Topic of Diversity in our industry In Destination on the Left’s 200th episode, we kick off October’s theme of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Nicole Mahoney shares experience with these issues, and she talks about the different ways her team is working together to live out the ‘equitable’ core value within their company. Learn what we can do to explore, understand, and act on the topic of diversity in the travel and tourism industry. In light of recent events in the United States that sparked severe racial unrest, the opportunity to have this conversation could not have come at a better time. Looking into the Mirror With racial injustice sweeping the country right now, it is hard to focus on more than race. In the travel and tourism industry alone, racial diversity is a major issue, and it goes all the way to the leadership level of top organizations. As Nicole started to think about this, she realized that even her own company is guilty of homogeneity. Nicole didn’t build a team of white women on purpose, and there was no discrimination in the hiring process—she just didn’t receive a diverse applicant pool. But that is how she and her team *used* to think. After the death of George Floyd, they decided to take a proactive approach to diversity instead of leaving it to circumstance. A Deep Dive into the Unknown At first, Nicole and her team weren’t quite sure how to address the issue of diversity in their company and industry. But after exhausting every resource and contact they could pull from their network, a plan started to materialize. They used their ‘equitable’ core value as a framework and starting point in their exploration of systemic racism and diversity in the United States. The team figured out where they were living that core value, and where they were falling short. And as a result, the discoveries they made will shape the policies and actions of the organization as a whole, impacting existing team members, future team members, and clients alike. Transgender actress Nicole Maines plays a superhero on her hit TV show “Supergirl,” but she’s also a superhero in her everyday life. As young as 3 years of age, Nicole knew that the biological sex she was assigned at birth was not right, and struggled with anger, anxiety, and sadness. With the support of her parents, Nicole started transitioning genders in the 1st grade, and the thoughtful and gradual changes were generally accepted by her peers. However, in middle school, after a run-in with a boy who took issue with her use of the female bathroom, the school staff barred her from using the female bathroom, and increasingly isolated her from normal experiences on- and off-campus. Nicole and her family sued the school district for discrimination and after a five-year court battle she was victorious when the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the school violated the Human Rights Act. Her landmark win prohibited barring transgender students access to bathrooms, paving the way for transgender justice and inclusivity. Her activism continues to this day and people regularly call on Nicole to guide them on how they can promote equality and inclusivity in their own communities. Nicole’s stories are so incredible relatable, no matter how you identify yourself on the gender and sexual preferences spectrums. As a young woman, Nicole is wise beyond her years and the lessons she has learned are ones all human beings can benefit from, as we ponder what it truly means to be authentic, joyful, and purposeful in our lives. Nicole reminds us to self-reflect in a way that is constructive rather than destructive and how to embrace each other’s differences. She calls on each person to dig deeply and determine what fears are holding us back, and why gossip holds such allure and offers temporary satisfaction, but ultimately steals a piece of our individual integrity. Dr. Judy reveals five actionable tips to be your own superhero which include letting moments of adversity be catalysts for personal growth, stopping blame, and gaining strength by avoiding your personal kryptonite. This lit conversation is going to help you to accomplish the extraordinary every day and to uncover incredible moments in the ordinary. In this episode, we discuss: 1. Setting the bar at superhero level (2:05) 2. Being the first transgender superhero on TV (2:50) 3. Exploring power and control in Nicole’s film bit (5:30) 4. The common misconceptions about transgender individuals (14:20) 5. The state of the science about the gender spectrum (19:45) 6. Nicole’s struggles as a child and how her parents and peers responded (22:15) 7. Nicole’s dating life and getting back into the game (27:35) 8. It seems as if everyone is always chasing this idea of “balance”. If you ask me, I’d say that balance isn’t real. Balance is one of those things that so many people are striving to reach but can never quite get there. In this episode, I am chatting about why I think balance is BS and what you might actually be looking for if you’ve been seeking balance. I talk about being able to adapt to changes and how social media creates a false perception of balance. I also talk about giving up the idea of balance and my advice for making it through the day and giving 100% to everything that you do instead of attempting to have balance. What’s in this episode: What Nicole thinks of when she hears the word “balance” Why she doesn’t think balance is real Setting yourself up for disappointment with high expectations of balance How comparison (and social media highlight reels) will make you feel pressured to find balance What you may be looking for that’s not actually “balance” such as productivity How everybody’s idea of balance is different How getting through the day and giving 100% is enough Being able to adapt to change and accept that not everything is going to get done Links:018: Give 100% Every Day I am so glad you decided to tune in today. Nicole Martinez has been a serial entrepreneur since the age of 7. She kind of bypassed the whole lemonade stand idea and catapulted right to door-to-door sales of her own handmade products! Living in southern California, while attending high school, Nicole was really lucky to be able to take part in film production as well as take summer acting classes at Pepperdine University. These were her most significant formative years, because she felt right at home in the world of film…not just in front of the camera, but also behind it. She soaked in everything from editing and design to directing and photography. All her interests culminated into an intuitive knack for computers—auto cad, web design, coding, programming, and more. Her inner nerd met up with her creative alter ego and her head became filled with ideas. However, just as most do, she followed the traditional pattern of life, and got herself a job out of high school, since her 7-year-old entrepreneurial spirit wasn't quite burgeoning anymore. Before too long, and just like in the movies, a loss became a life-changing opportunity. She was laid off from her job and, rather than jump back into the rat race, she jumped head first into her first business. Would you believe a Wedding Stationery business? What's more, it was an outstanding success! She got write ups in magazines, accolades over social media and built a solid clientele and was pretty blown away. Well, as the saying goes, success begets success. Her itchy feet and inner nerd called on her to move on to something new. That is when she started up A Brand New Beauty. Here she is today, not yet 30 and running another successful, and rapidly growing enterprise dedicated to helping lady beauty professionals and wedding planners start and grow their own businesses. Her passion is sharing all the tips and knowledge she garnered while starting and growing her own brands and businesses. She understands the importance of knowing, and growing, your audience. She has an ingrained spidey-sense about branding strategy, social media is her wheelhouse, and search engine optimization as just one of the many languages she speaks. If you are a woman in business, whether starting out, starting over, or looking to grow, she can help. She'll work with you to build a unique brand, develop a wicked social media strategy, engage your ideal clients and nail sales. She's about Women In Business. It is her credo, passion, drive, and her own pay it forward way to share what comes most naturally to her so that it becomes a fluid, seamless process for her clients. Empowering women who empower others. How much more flawless can it get? Here's what we covered on the episode: How Nicole wanted to be an actress when she grew up What her experience was like when she spent the summer in acting classes at Pepperdine when she was a kid What it was like when she started her wedding stationery business Why you are your own club promoter when you own a business Why using social media helped her audience taking her seriously How she asked for shout outs for the people that she worked with early on How she got a lot of sales on Etsy early on in her business, and why it's a great platform for designers who work on wedding stationery Why she decided to stop focusing on wedding stationery, and shifted her focus to helping women in business The type of design work that she did when she first started her business How giving away free information helped her How she learned that she can't be offering everything under the kitchen sink to her clients The 3 main services that she offers now in her business How she creates custom packages for her clients after meeting with them on sales calls - and how she works within their budget How she gets her clients today from Facebook and Instagram, but her main focus going forward will be on Instagram How Nicole gets clients to pick a start date, even though she has a waitlist for working with her What Nicole charges for her websites and logos, and why she chose to price her services the way that she does The online workshops she hosts for female entrepreneurs Why she thinks designers should start to use FB ads to stand out on Instagram Why she recommends teaching on social media instead of trying to sell to your followers and fans Her tips for other working moms who run businesses Why Nicole ended up getting a business phone, and how she manages that without getting distracted Links mentioned: Connect with Nicole on Instagram Nicole's website Abu, the FB ads trainer that Nicole mentions Like what you heard? It Can't Be That Friggin Hard?!? | Your Health IS My Business.
Hello everyone and welcome!! I have my dear friend Nicole Brown back again on the podcast. I had the pleasure of interviewing her for episode 6 which was all about burn out and adrenal fatigue. On that episode, Nicole shared how she used natural medicine to heal herself after years of heavy training and dieting in competitive body sculpting where her health had taken a huge nose dive which lead her to have adrenal exhaustion, an underactive thyroid and many digestive issues. What we didn't talk about in that episode was that Nicole had also been battling an eating disorder since her early 30's after she had suffered a significant emotional trauma. Eating disorders I believe is a really important issue that definitely needs more airtime. Roughly 900, 000 people in Australia are estimated to have an eating disorder at any given time and 64% of them are female. Nicole was able to heal herself through Natural therapies and emotional work, which is why I am really grateful to have her on the today. Some of the things you'll discover in this week's episodes are: + Nicole shares candidly her story and what lead her to have an eating disorder in her 30s + The definition of an eating disorder + The different types of eating disorders and how they differ + When Nicole knew she needed to get help + Why Nicole believes so many people suffer from eating disorders + Who is most at risk of developing eating disorders + The link between body image and eating disorders + How Nicole healed herself from having an eating disorder + The roadblocks that Nicole had come along the way + The warning signs and symptoms of eating disorders + What Nicole would have liked to have been told at that point in time in that part of her life that would have made a positive impact + Early red flags to keep an eye out for + The impact an eating disorder has on the body + The medical risks and complications of eating disorders + What Nicole recommends the first step for these people to take who are also suffering from eating disorders + How to keep on track and not fall back into unhealthy patterns + How Nicole cured her eating disorder + Whether it's possible as a concerning family or friend to say the wrong thing and make it worse + What someone should do if they think someone they know is suffering from an eating disorder + AND SO MUCH MORE!! Episode Spotlights: Nicole used to have a 9 to 5 job with a nonprofit organization, but she went to graduate school and had a ton of student loans She was working as a social worker and loved it, but she wasn’t making the money that she needed (2:00) To give herself more flexibility, Nicole decided to create her own office – but soon found that she recreated the 9 to 5 that she didn’t like (4:40) Nicole then found herself recreating 1 - 1 services, which have limits because of time constraints, she wanted something more Nicole found herself in coaching because it was flexible and she was still helping people solve their problems She was noticing that, as a service based entrepreneur, she was getting burnt out so easily (9:00) That is when she decided she needed multiple streams of income – this could be group coaching, courses, affiliate income, etc (10:00) Nicole focused more on her group coaching, letting her 1 - 1 services naturally ended The #1 mistake people make when adding extra income is that they try to service a different audience (13:05) Pros & Cons of 1 - 1 Services: You can give your clients a lot of time because they pay money for it, but you only have so many hours in a week (14:15) Pros and Cons of Group Services: You can create a community, but you have to have a bigger following to start. When Nicole created her first group coaching program, she called 50 people and 10 signed up – she spent six weeks not making money to achieve that (15:35) If you don’t have a big audience, you don’t want to do a course right away – focus on 1 - 1 clients. Then ask your audience questions to find what you should do next (17:30) Make sure what you do is something your audience would connect with (18:20) Affiliate Income: One of Nicole’s only really good income sources before she created her own content – it is a great way to test if your audience is interested in a certain topic (20:25) Affiliate income is the biggest type passive income, but it isn’t consistent income because you’re depending on people who may decide get rid of or change their course What Nicole’s Income Model Looks Like: 1 - 1 clients, mastermind & group program, course, affiliate income, investments & savings (24:15) Entrepreneur Obsessed Community is Nicole’s Facebook group - she loves it because it allows her to communicate with her audience (25:40) If you don’t want a roller coaster, if you want a steady flow of income without 1 - 1 services, you need more streams of income (28:10) Multiple streams of income allow you to not burn out Connect with your audience and ask what struggles they are having - ask what they want you to create next (32:30 Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Nicole’s Website – explore her programs and offers Nicole’s List of 10 Multiple Income Streams – stop relying on 1 - 1 services Join Nicole’s Entrepreneur Obsessed Community Facebook Group! I LOVE the episodes where we focus on the mental side of running, and this one, my friends is absolutely PACKED with information about how to be mentally stronger. This episode is a little unique to other mental training episodes as Nicole Detling (Sport Psychologist for many Olympians) and I look at the three biggest areas we tend to struggle; nerves before a race, giving up mentally during, and beating ourselves up for not doing enough after. Nicole explains about the two things runners worry about more than anything else; confidence and pre-performance anxiety. These work together, but at the same time against each other, which makes it hard for us to feel completely ready when it matters. We break down two scenarios; when training has gone well, and you fear you will mss everything up; and when training has had a lot of ups and downs, and you are not sure how to approach the race itself. We talk about why we often look for reasons to fail, without looking for the reasons we should be having success, and the change in perspective can make all the difference. Anxiety is not a bad thing, it could be excitement! Your body doesn't know any different. As runner we forget that we always have anxiety, even before good races, and if we ran well there, that means anxiety is always part of performance, so why is it bad? We learn how to treat anxiety like an old friend, and remember that we have never done anything great without them Nicole goes step by step goes through how to get a big goal you want, and what to do if you feel like you are not mentally tough. We learn advice for how to turn yourself back around if you feel like no way going to make it during a race. We know we are our own worst critic, and we compare worst days to everyone else highlight reel, but there is advice in here for how to stop, or at least limit that. Remember, mental toughness is pushing past barriers, every time you do that, you are building mental toughness. When most runners push through something hard, they feel like they got lucky, but you need to remember you did that, and you are getting tougher, reward yourself for it! Finally, learn how to asses a bad race/Injury (anything you consider a failure). It is okay to allow yourself to embrace the suck, but then important to make a plan to make sure it doesn't happen again. What are you going to do about your mindset? Today's episode is for you if you feel you are not mentally tough (you probably are tougher than you think!) and if you feel like the mental side of things is what lets you down in races and training over and over again. Today's Guest Nicole Detling Owner of Headstrong Consulting and Assistant Professor at the University of Utah. Nicole has worked with athletes of all levels, from high school teams to Olympic athletes. Nicole has co-authored psychology books and been featured in journal publications, and regularly travels the world giving talks and trainings on mental toughness to athletes, coaches, and businesses. What You Will Learn About How to be aware of your anxiety pre race, and how you can make it help you (or make your butterflies fly in formation as Nicole puts it!) Why focusing on a specific goal at a specific race (the outcome) is NOT productive and actually often hindering you, but how you can get that race goal time you do want REALLY bad How to handle things going wrong in the race, when you mentally break down, you CAN turn it around How to find your "why" and how to use it during moments of doubt and fear What Nicole would like to tell you if you think you are not mentally tough How to not beat yourself up after a bad race and how a mental break will work wonders for your running future Inspirational Quotes I really enjoyed the performance side. That has always been my love and my passion, performance and how do we get the most out of people, maximize potential. The basic principles of mental toughness are the same, regardless of what that performance may be...we all have to perform every day. The number one source of confidence is the one thing that we can't deny and the one thing that we can always hang our hats on, is preparation. If you feel, when you get to any competition, that you have prepared the best you possibly can given the circumstances you have had, that is the best source of confidence you can have. I don't care who you are, what sport you do, how good you are, if you look for reasons to fail, you will find them...but, if you look for reasons to succeed, you will find those too. Butterflies (nervousness) are good, you just want them flying in formation. The best athletes in the world do have some pre race performance anxiety and it goes away once the performance starts. When you have that number in your mind, that goal in your mind, and you want it a lot and try really hard to get it, typically what that results in is a lot of body tension, you end up hitting the wall a lot sooner, your run stride are less efficient, you are less effective, your re not getting as much push, and typically for most people that results in a lot slower times than anticipated. If you take care of whats important now all along the way, thats keeping your mind in the process of the race, and before you know it, that outcome takes care of itself. If you feel like things are falling apart, typically what you are doing is connecting what is happening now to the outcome. When you recognize that you have pushed through a little bit, you release some more endorphins in that moment which is going to help you feel better, feel happier, and help mitigate some of the pain. When you know your why, you can bear almost any how. Most people are more mentally tough than they think they are. Just because you quit in a race, doesn't mean you are a quitter, doesn't mean you are a loser, it just means in that moment in time, it wasn't working out the way you wanted it to. That doesn't mean you can't go back and tackle that race the following year or something similar. You should celebrate your success just as much as you beat yourself up for your failures. If something really did not go well, embrace the suck! Acknowledge it, recognize it, value it, it is okay to say that didn't go the way I wanted it to... ...But don't get stuck in the suck, and thats what happens with a lot of people. Allow yourself to feel the suck, acknowledge it, but then what are you going to do about it? How are you going to come back better? Nicole Mericle on Mental Game of Racing, Balance in Life and Diet 3 Alternative source: This week's podcast with Nicole miracle, ehm Mericle. Why miracle? Because many commented on her sudden appearance to Spartan Race accompanied by reaping the podium finishes one by one. But the truth is that she has been racing since childhood and has put a lot of work into her performance physically and mentally. During our lovely chat, we delve into topics like how she overcomes suffering, her mental preparation (and in the end of the episode I add more useful information about how to change your emotional state for better performance), her vision and nutrition. Let me know what you think and enjoy! Show-notes: The most important part we spoke about that really stood out to me was how Nicole overcomes suffering and pre-race nervousness. As she said, nervousness equals ready to race in her mind. That frame of mind allows her to calm down and reduce it. You can start using that method too! Our emotions are created by three different things: our focus, the meaning, and our physiology. By changing any part of the triad, you can change your emotion (after you get aware of it). What Nicole does is that she changes the meaning of the experience she has, therefore interrupting it. You can also change it by changing your physiology as it is deeply rooted in our brain - when we are happy we might jump, when we are sad we are slumpy and sloppy when tired. When it comes to running, a tired runner can be spotted by having a bad form. Here is an experiment for you. Next time you run and you get tired, focus on your form and posture. When you start getting sloppy notice how you feel. Then correct it to the proper form and compare the results. You can find Nicole here: Facebook: Nicole Mericle Instagram: @nickeldm
