Today we continue our Language Spotlight series. PHP is the most-used server-side web development language in the world, and it's also one of the few to be purely open source. We speak with two PHP 8.0 Release Managers, Sara Golemon and Gabriel Caruso, about the current status of PHP and the PHP 8.0 release.Exciting PHP features and benefitsIt's hard to understate how important PHP is for the Internet. It has been in constant, evolving use online for 26 years — the Internet itself has only existed for 38.  Some of its most popular benefits are that it's easy to get started and easy to use (plus, its stellar documentation). But it also has exciting features and improvements that many people may not know about. Sara Golemon lists several of them for us. The type system:“Strict types really brought the type system to the forefront of people's minds, because they can actually use types that they pass around on a daily basis much better than they could before.”Composer:“Composer is a dependency management system at its core that allows you to pull in packages from other places. Composer makes code sharing and reuse across the Ruby / PHP ecosystem so much more solid and so much better.”Attributes: “Attributes are going to allow us to do much more interesting things in the future with user space classes and code, even internal code.”PHP has other, more abstract characteristics that our guests enjoy, such as its flexibility. As Sara puts it, “PHP allows you to shoot yourself in the foot. PHP is not built on guide rails. PHP is designed to say, ‘Here are a bunch of tools, do something with those tools, and build something with these tools.'”For Gabriel, he enjoys PHP's ability to wrangle complex projects. “I think that one of the advantages of PHP for the web is it's very easy to structure a large project, even if there are multiple different paradigms in each part of it.” Sara sums up PHP's importance and influence on the web well. “You should learn PHP if you're going to work on the web, period. PHP was born on the web, it was built for the web, it literally grew up with the web. It is part of the web's DNA, and it does the web really, really, really, really well.”To experience how PHP does the web, try PHP on Platform.shPlatform.shLearn more about us.Get started with a free trial.Have a question? In 2012, my guest, Sara Olsher, packed up her 18-month old daughter, left her marriage, and after four years of intense personal growth, founded a company that sells amazing resources for co-parents and their children. Whether it’s divorce, cancer, death, or any other uncertainty, Sara has worked hard to be comfortable with the profoundly uncomfortable through her company Mighty + Bright. Much of what we discuss in this episode is about how to help our children through a hard situation and ease their anxiety. Because honestly, most kids simply want to know that you’re going to be okay, and want to know how divorce is going to affect them. As  Sara reminds us, “You’re raising resilient kids. This [divorce] is a really hard thing to go through, but every challenge that we have makes us more resilient and that’s true for your kids too. They have your support through it and you’re helping them to be stronger people.” Show Highlights Sara shares the story of her path towards healing after divorce led her into the world of child psychology and into the way that kids’ brains work. (7:45) The inspiration for her first product, a magnetic co-parenting calendar for separation + divorce. (9:58) Sara’s breast cancer diagnosis and the creation of a book about talking to children about cancer. (11:01) How her calendars and books help children get answers to unresolved questions, ease tension, and help them with executive functioning. (17:18)   Learn More About Sara: As a writer, illustrator, and speaker, Sara spends her life creating products to help kids through really hard things at Mighty + Bright, and talking about stuff that makes many people want to crawl into a deep, dark hole. Whether it is divorce, cancer, death, or uncertainty, she has worked hard to be comfortable with the profoundly uncomfortable. Her work has been featured in POPSUGAR, Reader’s Digest, the Mighty, and Good Housekeeping, to name a few, and she has spoken in front of audiences large and small about her experience making major life changes after divorce and cancer. She truly believes that everyone has the strength and resilience to overcome unimaginable hardship and use those lessons to make this world a much better place. Happy #SeekTheJoy Tuesday! I’m so excited to share the next episode in our series, “Lessons In” featuring Sara McCormick!   Sara McCormick joins us to share a lesson she’s learned about using astrology to frame our self-care practices, especially in times of honoring our grief, why self-care is really soul-care, and how it opens up the door to a greater relationship with yourself. Through sharing her own experience with grief, Sara sheds light on why paying attention to the Moon is incredibly healing, the importance of allowing ourselves to feel our emotions without being overwhelmed by them, the growth that she’s experienced as a result of her practices, and the joy she’s found. Sara’s reflections, honesty, and vulnerability will leave you feeling inspired, and remind you that when we give ourselves permission to sit with our emotions, we’re able to expand in ways we never imagined. As Sara so beautifully shares, allowing ourselves to feel our grief lets us feel and experience our joy too. Sara McCormick is the astrologer behind Bella de Luna. Perfectionism. What comes to mind when you hear that word? For many people, trying to attain “perfection” here in this broken world leads to despair, extreme frustration, debilitating doubt, never feeling good enough, and constant comparison with others which leads to a deep discontentment that permeates the soul. It can feel almost maddening. Like carrying a weight around that is absolutely crushing. Yet, our culture can tend to glamorize it - think of the Lexus car commercial promoting the “pursuit of perfection”. Sometimes we wonder if our life would be better if we had MORE perfectionist tendencies. And to be honest, many perfectionists DO accomplish a lot…but at what cost?!? That’s the question that my guest today ended up asking herself after years of trying to accept nothing less than “perfection” in her life. Today I’m joined by Sara Waddel, my cousin and dear friend. On this episode we talk about how harmful and damaging these tendencies can be when they take over. How quickly perfectionism can rob us of peace, freedom, contentment, and JOY. As Sara shares her story, you’ll be encouraged by her fight for joy in the struggle. God has been teaching her a lot and I’m grateful for her willingness to share so openly and honestly. I think you’ll especially be helped by some of the practical things that she implements into her daily life to fight against perfectionism. There is so much joy to be found when we rest in Christ’s work, not our own…knowing that we are not accepted and loved by God because we do everything “perfectly” and never fail, but because as believers, Christ’s righteousness counts for us! And, we know that the Holy Spirit is producing good fruit in us that delights God. We don’t have to earn his love or our salvation. We don’t have to seek the love and approval of others - or find our value in doing things “better” than those around us. This is freeing and joy-producing! *The Fighting for Joy Podcast is sponsored by Faithful Counseling, an online Christian counseling service that pairs you with a professional licensed therapist who will combine Biblical wisdom with their clinical expertise in mental health to help you address your unique situation. What is it like to live with Bipolar? If you are struggling with a mental illness it can feel incredibly isolating because of the stigma attached to your diagnosis. Today we have an incredible guest, Sara Benbassat, who generously shares her story in order to break the shame around Bipolar and humanize the experience that many people face. One of the goals of Hope to Recharge is to break the stigma around mental illness. As Sara mentions in today’s episode, mental struggles are more common than we may like to admit and it is likely that if you do not struggle personally, there is someone in your family that does. One of the ways that we can break the stigma is to hold space for the experiences and stories of others. Sara shares about the mental health climate in London where she lives and what it was like when she first started experiencing signs of her illness. She walks us through her journey of having psychotic episodes, being admitted into a hospital, and the pain of being taken away from her daughter. We walk through navigating relationships and discovering your identity after experiencing trauma. Sara also talks about the process of forgiving and giving yourself grace during difficult times. As she says, “everything is a process” and although the journey can be long, you do not have to suffer in silence. We hope this story brings you clarity about the diagnosis of Bipolar whether you are walking through it yourself or you have a loved one who is. The journey does not have to be walked through alone. She is a Certified Yoga Instructor, Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and shares her knowledge as a regular contributor to MindBodyGreen, Manduka, and theYogaOutlet. Further, Sara is a proud ambassador for Manduka Yoga, PUMA, GoMacro, YogaOutlet, and LVE! Swimwear, and affiliations with The North Face and Zico Coconut Water, and is represented by the Vegan-based modeling agency, JSW Model Management. Key Points from the Interview with Sara Quiriconi, The Live Free Warrior Sara, who just released her first book, Living {Cancer} Free, shared her journey to get to the knowledge in the book, including battles with Cancer literally and cancers figuratively. She aims to help people live free from both. Sara’s story started with the kind of identity crisis many suffer from during their teenage years. She had a sense of who she was inside, who she was turning into, and the person she needed to pretend to be to be liked. That battle and disconnect had a toll on her, and lead to the start of her eating disorder issues, including Anorexia and Bulimia. This was one way she was able to exert control over at least one area of her life. As Sara got older, those battles expanded into problems with alcohol, which is almost the opposite issue from the eating disorders because this was about losing control and being reckless whereas the eating issues were about controlling her life. Sara enrolled in college in Boston, and struggled there, deciding to leave the school and return home after a year. This ended up being a potentially-life-saving decision as it was at home that her mother pushed her to get a strange lump on her neck looked at. It was found to be a cancerous tumor, and Sara was quickly diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She began a 10-month program or radiation and chemotherapy. While her drinking during treatment stopped for the most part, she still battled with her eating disorders, including going to the gym as much as she could to purge through excessive exercise. Interestingly, during her battle with Cancer and despite her continuing to make destructive decisions around food, Sara enrolled in a local community college to keep learning and growing, which I found to be such a beautiful break from the turmoil in the rest of her life. Knowledge has always been an important part of her life, and she decided it was important to keep that going. Sara pointed out a really interesting fact about Cancer. Only 5-10% is genetically-driven. That means 90-95% of Cancer could potentially be avoided. While this simplifies things a bit (you could still avoid a genetically-driven Cancer if you find a way to keep a gene from expressing itself, for example), it’s a really powerful statistic to keep in mind and to think about what you are doing in your life that may be bringing cancers into your situation. This is about being 100% responsible for our lives, being the CEO of our lives, which is what Living Free is really all about. After beating Cancer, Sara returned to school full-time, pursuing a degree in design, and went into the advertising world doing design. She also returned to drinking and kept making dealing with her eating disorders. She described it as a calm after the storm where she was left suddenly having to face all the emotions she had to push past during treatment. It was sort of a trade off between the control of the eating disorder and the loss of control of drinking, alternating one one day and the other the next. When it all hit her during the pause after treatment in this limbo of “what do you do now,” she realized she needed to do something different with her life. This was another point of the conflict between who she is, and she was meant to be. Sara shared a quote she’s been using in her email signature about being the CEO of your life, which we mentioned before. She stresses the importance of how this puts responsibility for your actions squarely on your shoulders. And how you should not feel guilty about that or scared of it. If you fall down, it’s up to you to get back up and learn from it so you can keep getting up in the future. Those choices are yours to make. Having that freedom to choose is empowering if you own it. Sara lost her job in the Great Recession, which forced her to seek a less expensive workout option to purge with, which is how she was introduced to Yoga, which she initially did not like but noticed was the first time she allowed herself to feel. Part of that was not having the metrics to show her how much she had burned off like she would on a piece of cardio equipment at the gym, and partially because she didn’t take the first instructor she had. This was a good chance to learn that you should follow your sense of fit with anyone you turn to as an expert, and so she tried other instructors until she found someone who really clicked for her. After that, she discovered a real love for Yoga, the control it brings and the way breathing and opening the body worked her in a way she had never been challenged before. After several years as a student, she began teaching Yoga, and eventually left her day job to do it full-time. As Yoga played a bigger role in her life, she started to get a clearer sense of what Living Free was really about, culminating in her 14-point Live Free Manifesto. A few of them are: Never Settle, Quality of Quantity, You Have the Power to Choose Any Life That You Desire. We got into the strong influence the fear of the past and future have over our present moment. The only thing we ever have is right here and right now (obviously this is something that’s right up my alley with Do a Day) The way Sara finally cut out drinking was to discover the Why behind her drinking, face that, and then she was able to just stop drinking in an instant. We talked about the importance of Play - having a space where we allow our light to shine through, especially as adults. We should let the child in us come out occasionally and just play. It can make space for creativity, rejuvenation and levity - all things we need in life. Sara shared a really important initiative she’s doing to provide healthy care baskets for people battling Cancer called the Cancer Care Package. We talked about how people get gifts, which is great, but they’re unhealthy things that would actually feed a tumor’s growth (like candy). You can get the smalland largeversions of the baskets from Sara’s site. Sara Plumstead and Amy Haenick are friends who met through their shared passion for running and living healthy. And in recent time, they've become business partners -- the Detroit-area moms are behind Run Strong Project, which offers coaching and run-specific strength training. They join Heather on the show to talk about becoming friends (Sara also coaches Amy) and their interest in helping other athletes take their running and strength training to the next level. They also share solid tips for incorporating strength training into our routines and improving our running performance. "Sara began coaching me as a runner about a year ago," Amy says. "We became fast friends and started Run Strong Project in January 2017. I absolutely love being a strength coach and helping others to become stronger and faster!"  "I started running at the age of 30," Sara says, "after the birth of my second daughter. It was a wonderful stress relief as I adjusted to life as the parent of a special needs child who has a rare chromosome deletion. I ran my first half marathon in 2007, and my first marathon a year later, finishing in 3:31. Since then I have completed at least 20 marathons." As Sara "embarks on my 40s," she is attempting to lower her marathon PR from 3:04 to sub 3:00. She's also an ACE certified group fitness instructor and a VDOT O2 certified distance running coach.  Amy says she's always loved fitness. "I grew up playing sports. In high school, I was a three-sport athlete participating in swimming, volleyball and softball." She was named Female Athlete of the Year of her high school and went on to Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Recreational Therapy.  Amy talks about how during her freshman year of college she became anorexic. "It was a tough transition from high school to college and I felt a loss of control. Once I became healthy and recovered (still an ongoing struggle sometimes), I started running. Running helped me so much in my recovery," she says. She ran her first marathon in 1996 and qualified for Boston on her first try. She has since run 10 marathons, including Boston and holds a PR of 3:35. This week, we join the Legends in 1942, the year in which they were doomed to die as they team-up with the Justice Society of America. But before they join forces, the JSA captures the Legends in a battle where they show off their coordination and super powers. Our "team" just cannot keep up! The JSA deliberate how to best deal with the Legends, who at best belong in a mental institution according to their assessment, and refuse to believe their time travel story. Dr. Heywood reveals intimate details about Commander Steel, details only a very close family member would know, and we learn Dr. Heywood has met his own grandfather who died before he was born. The JSA release the Legends from their prison and they explain how and when they have met Rex Tyler. In flashback, Rex Tyler informs the team they will all die in 1942 and proceeds to vanish right before their eyes. Tyler has no recollection of this encounter because for him, in 1942, it hasn't happened yet.  We cut to Paris 1942 and see Eobard Thawne meeting with Herr Krieger to give him a super serum. His goal is to destroy the JSA and deliver America to Hitler on a silver platter. He is also searching for an amulet with mysterious powers. In a less then democratic fashion, Dr. Stein is named captain of the Legends and the team decide how best to continue on their mission of preventing aberrations. Sara tries to kick Dr. Heywood off the team, but they discover his dog tags have disappeared and the JSA is in mortal danger. They return to 1942 to save the JSA. Dr. Stein goes undercover as Max Lorenz, a famous Austrian singer, and treats us to a rendition of Edelweiss. Meanwhile, the team is working to procure intel on the whereabouts of the amulet. After Ray refuses to salute Hitler, a brawl ensues and the rest of the JSA come to the rescue.  After convincing the JSA they need their help, our Legends track down the convoy carrying the amulet. During the battle, Ray and Vixen are captured by Herr Krieger. As Sara and Rex deliberate on the best way to complete the mission, Ray comes up with a plan to free himself and Vixen with a microscope. The JSA and the Legends work together to recover Ray and Vixen and return to the Waverider. As they are heading back, Dr. Heywood and Commander Steel encounter a bomb and Dr. Heywood is critically injured. Ray saves the day when he injects Dr. Heywood with an improved version of the super serum, saving his life. The JSA and the Legends say their goodbyes and our team leaves 1942.  In the closing scene, we see Rex Tyler stowing the amulet for safekeeping. Eobard Thawne speeds into their lair and kills Rex Tyler to prevent him from warning the Legends not to return to 1942. He takes the amulet and Vixen finds Rex Tyler, dying, who tells her a time traveler has killed him.  Join in the discussion by sending feedback to sibercastfan@gmail.com. Follow us on Twitter @sibercast and join our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/tomorrowslegends. As the show opens, we witness Cronos boarding the Waverider and find out the reason Ray, Kendra and Sara were left behind in 1958. For reasons yet to be determined, Cronos has sent the remainder of the team into a free fall through time and kidnapped Snart. When our stranded heroes are not rescued within 10 hours of the Waverider's mysterious disappearance, Kendra and Sara begin to lose hope and decide to leave Harmony Falls. After 10 months, Sara has lost all hope of being rescued and leaves Ray and Kendra to find a place where she belongs. Meanwhile, Rip manages to reboot Gideon and return to the closest point in time after Cronos sabotaged the navigation system: 1960. Just before Ray can propose to Kendra, the beacon he built to signal the Waverider comes online and hails the Waverider. Cronos and Snart are getting to know one another when a UFO sighting in 1960 announces the presence of the rest of the team. It seems everyone is now off to Nanda Parbat to "rescue" Sara while Cronos follows with the intention of taking down the rest of the team. In an unexpected turn of events, Sara takes the entire team prisoner to await their death for trespassing at the hands of R'as al Ghul, but Rip requests a trial by combat in an effort to save the team from their almost certain death. When R'as nominates Sara to take his place, Rip does the same, leaving Kendra to face Sara and appeal to whatever humanity she may have left. As Sara hesitates to kill Kendra, Cronos storms in, R'as releases the team, and an epic fight sequence ensues. Snart reappears in the nick of time to prevent the team from killing Cronos and reveals to the team he is really Mick Rory. The team returns to the Waverider with all team members accounted for and tries to decide Rory's fate. He remains alive and a prisoner, for now, and Rip announces there is one place in time where he knows they can find Vandal Savage for certain: 2147.
