EPISODE 684 - Cyndi Brec - THE THERANS SERIES, hidden truths, the weight of untold legends, and the power of preserving the past while daring to shape the futureMy name is Cyndi Brec. I love writing my heroine into dangerous webs of deception while I sip French vanilla iced coffee. I'm an avid reader turned YA fantasy romance writer with a strong background in Recreational Therapy who has penned The Therans Series. I have never thought of myself as an author, more of a storyteller. During my downtime, I started writing while caring for my husband, kids, and extended family. I'm a creative wordsmith who weaves tales that transcend the boundaries of reality—pure storytelling magic enriched by the unique lens of a dyslexic novelist. Ahead of publication, I've snagged several endorsements from notable authors and influencers: Jonas Saul, the bestselling author of the Sarah Roberts Series; Alan Warren, NBC Radio Host/Producer/Author; and Suzy Vadori, Author and critic of the Fountain Series and three-time Aurora Awards Finalist. I have also secured a 5-star rating from Readers' Favorite for The Therans: Secrets Beneath Scars and the second novel in the series, The Therans: Legends Never Die.I'm just a regular gal—storyteller, speaker, and co-host of the P English Literature podcast. I joke around, saying, "I'm a sidekick podcaster interviewing authors and serving book banter." I also speak on ‘Time Management Strategies for Authors Success: Managing Your Minutes,' aiming to inspire fellow authors to live their dreams. I champion pursuing dreams and embracing challenges, refusing to let disabilities hold me back. My faith has grown through resilience and determination. After marrying, I traveled to Europe and many of the States. However, Ohio is my home, where my husband and I have raised two great kids and several energetic dogs. My love of history was enriched by co-owning a 200-year-old historic watermill with Rich for over 20 years, which has fostered an appreciation of historical knowledge and cultivation of The Therans Series. The Watermill is the backdrop to the Theran story world and the creation of fictional creatures.Currently, I am working on an anthology and co-authoring a historical nonfiction book. This book will detail a historic Water Mill, its historical accounts, and the restoration process.Stay epic, write wild, read like it's your superpower, and never stop causing chaos with your words!Air hugs!https://www.inkerspen.com/cyndi-brechttps://cyndibrecauthor.wordpress.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Meet Livie Puranen, a current student pursuing a bachelor's degree in recreational therapy at the University of South Alabama College of Education and Professional Studies. Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. Puranen's academic journey began with interest in occupational therapy, but later gravitated to the fun and creative aspects of recreational therapy. Susan Montgomery, an instructor in the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Sport, also joins Puranen in this episode. Puranen completed an an independent study at the Mulherin Home, a residential facility for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Fresh from working as a makeup artist on a locally produced horror film, Livie took her love for filmmaking into her work with Mulherin Home residents and committed to working with residents to compose, film and screen their own movie. The use of film and video in recreational therapy is not a well-developed practice, but this did not deter Puranen. She began with screening and discussing the art of filmmaking with her residents and moved into working with residents to brainstorm, script and film their own movie. This project helped Puranen learn how to refine her skills to develop recreational therapy programs and better understand the research literature in her field. Puranen is interested in pursuing graduate education in recreational therapy and hopes to further explore the integration of film and video into recreational therapy practice. This episode is a celebration and those who accept the autism spectrum are invited. At this party we have a special guest his name is Adam Wheeler. Adam Wheeler has resided in Bloomington his entire life and is a B.S. in Recreational Therapy and M.A. in Speech and Language Sciences graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington. Currently, he works as a speech-language pathologist (SLP) at Clear Creek Elementary School and works as the foundation's treasurer (MCAF). Adam developed an early and natural awareness of autism as a result of growing up in a family that was neurodiverse in every way. After years of misconceptions and incorrect diagnoses, his late father, Philip, received an adult autism diagnosis. Adam's comprehension and awareness of autistic persons and their needs were greatly influenced by Phil's experience and advice. Since Adam's older brother has autism as well, they have had to develop special routines and methods of communication. Adam even frequently plans playgroups for the families he served, a talent he has continued to hone. An adult just serves as a connection point, skill model, and mediator to foster empathy and understanding in these entirely kid-led gatherings. Even while some other STEM activities and board games are employed, current groups tend to focus on LEGO activities . Adam established his own LLC, Celebrating the Spectrum, to further his goal of providing satisfying, effective, and profoundly respectful care for people with autism throughout their lives.

When you think of belonging, what does it mean to you at work? Do you feel you belong where you work? Why? Today on Conflict Managed, Kristin Dunn, Director of Systems Advancement at AIMHiTN, talks to us about her remote job, which she joined a year before the pandemic hit. Kristin discusses the benefits of a remote workforce, crafting caring policies, the importance of reflective practices, and being creative to stay connected. Kristen also shares with us how she has (and is) dealing with recent health issues and being a working mother. She tells us what it's like to work for an organization who has come along side her, supporting her with resources and assistance, to continue to work through her difficult health challenges. Kristin Dunn received her bachelor's degree in Child and Families Studies with a minor in Political Science from the University of Tennessee at Martin and her master's degree in Recreational Therapy from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Upon graduation, she spent time in Washington DC with the Children Rights Council advocating for children to have access to both parents. Kristin then went onto providing Recreational Therapy for Adolescents in Residential Treatment in Chattanooga, TN. She later served 10 years of her career in Prevention and Early Intervention Services in Knoxville, TN, including Healthy Families Home Visiting Program and the Regional Intervention Program. She joined AIMHiTN in 2019.  Kristin enjoys sharing with others about Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health and learning about all the great work Tennessee is doing.  During her time off she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling with her husband, cheering on the Volunteers, and being outdoors. Her professional and personal motto is "Every child (person) should know a little joy every day." You can find Kristin Dunn online at https://aimhitn.org/about-us/staff-board. The Work of a Recreational Therapist: A Conversation with Candace Rebuck Brain injuries are invisible, silent and often lifelong. Our guest today on the Brain Injury Connector is Candace Rebuck, a Recreational Therapist. Candace focuses on helping individuals transition back to their previous lifestyle after a brain injury and regain the ability to participate in the things they love doing. Recreational Therapy is a process that involves activity-based interventions to address the specific needs of individuals suffering from injury or disability. Recreational Therapy combines aspects of Physical therapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy, utilizing balance, fine motor skills, mental and cognitive exercises, and engaging patients in the things they are most passionate about. One of the core focuses of Recreational Therapy is having fun! Masking the hard work of recovery in leisure and recreational activities, Cadence says, “If you're having a good time with it, you're going to do more!” Candace also works closely with the patients entire recovery team - physicians, nursing and therapy staff, rehab aids, neuropsychologist, and most importantly, the individuals family members. Providing knowledge, resources, and tools to the family as the patient recovers, helps to make sure they're on board and understand the process. Candace says as a Recreational Therapist, it's important to leave your outside world outside, being totally available to help people cope with their new reality. Candace is a jack of all trades when it comes to therapy, but she's most proud of the work she does as a certified instructor in Non Violent Crisis Prevention and her specialty certifications in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Brain Injury.
