The 1990s was a particularly exciting time in Australian rock music. The musical movements that started in the US and the UK in the 90s have been well documented (particularly in reference to certain bands), but not so much has been written about the purple patch of creativity that took place in Australia over that decade. Over the last few years, my guest for this episode has taken it upon himself to rectify that, showing particular dedication to his favourite band....that just happens to be of that decade. Welcome to episode 185 of Love That Album. I'll make a confession here.....my 90s musical choices were probably different to many of the artists that were part of that purple patch, but it is undeniable how new and innovative bands were becoming – partly influenced by what happened in Seattle, but so much was independent of what was happening overseas. The Whitlams, Regurgitator, The Cruel Sea, The Fauves, Something For Kate and some kids from Newcastle were amongst many that were a huge part of the landscape. One band in particular, though, had the knack of combining 90s with the 60s and the 70s. You Am I fronted by the extremely charismatic Tim Rogers started out grunge. In short order, though, they moved away from that to write and perform songs that combined rock aggression with melodicism, and could also write a “tear in your beer” ballad. (Big Star mixed with Hellacopters and The Replacements.....my opinion and I'm sticking with it). You Am I released 3 albums in a row that went to number 1 on the charts.....no other Australian band had ever done that. Yet, in the US and Europe, they remained a cult act. Danny Yau is the host of Just Ace, a podcast dedicated to documenting the 90s Australian alternative music scene – whatever the hell that means (IYKYK). He's also You Am I's number 1 fan, and accidental archivist. I invited Danny to join me to discuss You Am I's 6th album (and their second one after the 90s) Deliverance. The band always made the music they wanted, but with no support from their major label forthcoming, they decided to make an album with no consideration to label requirements. It would have been easy to chat about the albums they're most associated with HiFi Way and Hourly Daily (both 10 out of 10 records), but we do things differently on this little show. Danny and I discuss a myriad of things including the Melbourne–Sydney rivalry, the difference between how Australians and Americans define “rooting”, songs of sadness and joy, and what the 90s meant in terms of Australian music.....and we do a hell of a lot of You Am I talk.....some of it in relation to our focus album, Deliverance. We ran out of time towards the end, but I had a ton of fun chatting with Danny, and we've even agreed on a future episode of See Hear Podcast he's going to join Tim, Kerry and myself on – discussing a film about a fictional 90s band....of course. Australian icon Tex Perkins takes us through his legendary career, from The Cruel Sea & The Beasts recent works, to wild ARIA award nights, his atrocious habits with vinyl records, reissuing his works on vinyl and lots more.  Topics Include: Tex Perkins rehearsing with The Cruel Sea for upcoming gigs. Bringing back "deep cuts" from 30 years ago. Band already prepared the songs before his arrival. Feels like "personal karaoke" returning to old material. Gains fresh perspective on older songs with time. Sometimes writes songs instinctively, not from personal experience. Song "Hard For You" channeled rage he hadn't experienced. Recorded with Kid Congo Powers from Bad Seeds. ARIA Awards incident clarified - didn't stab anyone. Hit someone with a glass at an after-party. Molly Meldrum was present during the altercation. Lived with Jules Normington of Phantom Records. Paid rent by washing Jules' dishes. Had access to Jules' extensive record collection. Especially enjoyed 60s punk and garage rock records. Met John Foy, who was pedantic about record handling. Music scattered across many different record labels. Controls some albums, but not all. Universal owns The Cruel Sea and some Beasts albums. Axeman's Jazz recorded and mixed in six hours. Recent album "Ultimo" recorded differently - basic tracks then laptop. Modern recording allows more experimentation without studio costs. Prefers vinyl album lengths around 18-20 minutes per side. Three Legged Dog being released on three vinyl sides. Spanish reissues were "handshake deals" with unclear accounting. Appreciates unashamedly Australian content in newer bands. Newer bands don't hide their Australian accents. Never experienced censorship of his music. Had releases in different regions without his knowledge. No accounting from Big Time label after bankruptcy. Performed with The Legendary Stardust Cowboy in 1985. "Ledge" known for having "world's worst record" - Paralyzed. Backed Ledge with James Baker, Spencer Jones, Lachlan McLeod. Ledge progressively stripped during his performance. Threw Frisbee paper plates with drawings into the audience. Eric Ambler (1909-1998) was a distinguished English writer renowned for his gripping spy and thriller novels. Born on June 28, 1909, in London, England, Ambler hailed from a family with a background in entertainment; his father was a music hall comedian, while his mother worked as a dressmaker. His early education took place at University College School in London, and later he pursued engineering studies at London University, although he opted to abandon his academic pursuits to embark on a career in writing. Initially, Ambler found employment as an advertising copywriter, but his passion for storytelling soon led him to the realm of novels. In 1936, he made his literary debut with "The Dark Frontier," marking the beginning of a prolific career. Notable works from the 1930s include "Epitaph for a Spy" and "Cause for Alarm," which firmly established him as a leading figure in the genre of spy and thriller fiction. During World War II, Ambler contributed his talents to the British War Office and the Ministry of Information, leveraging his expertise in propaganda and psychological warfare to aid the war effort. Post-war, he continued his literary journey with acclaimed novels like "Journey into Fear" and "The Schirmer Inheritance," both of which were successfully adapted into films. Ambler's distinctive writing style was characterized by meticulous attention to detail and the creation of multifaceted, realistic characters. His narratives often incorporated elements of political and social commentary, earning praise for their authenticity and relevance. In addition to his novels, Ambler ventured into screenwriting, contributing to notable productions such as the 1953 film "The Cruel Sea" and the iconic 1960s TV series "The Avengers." Throughout his illustrious career, Ambler received numerous accolades, including the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1975 and the prestigious Diamond Dagger Award from the Crime Writers' Association in 1986. Even in his later years, Ambler remained dedicated to his craft, producing compelling novels well into his 80s. His final work, "The Care of Time," was published in 1981. Eric Ambler passed away on October 22, 1998, leaving behind a legacy as one of the foremost masters of spy and thriller fiction, with his captivating narratives continuing to captivate readers worldwide. New Politics: Australian Politics

Welcome to New Politics! In this episode, we explore the recent incident involving the HMAS Toowoomba in the East China Sea and its repercussions on Australian politics. While the details of the incident remain unclear, the aftermath has fueled anti-China rhetoric within the media, providing the Liberal Party with another opportunity to emphasise national security concerns. Has the Australia–China relationship been damaged again, after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have dedicated the past 18 months to repairing relations and lifting trade sanctions? We explore the delicate balance between diplomatic efforts and the persistent political tug-of-war between the Labor and Liberal parties regarding China.Turning to domestic issues, we analyse the resurfacing debate over Stage 3 tax cuts. The familiar arguments surrounding inflation, government budget constraints, and income inequality come to the forefront. Is it a matter of affordability or political strategies from different sides of politics? We discuss the potential economic and political ramifications of implementing these tax cuts and why the Labor government is likely to implement them in full.We also examine the latest opinion polls, revealing the Liberal–National Coalition's lead in the two-party preferred voting, which now seems to be a trend. We navigate through the complexities of polling data, emphasising that the only poll that truly matters is the one on election day – but still, it's a report card on how the government is travelling. We explore how populist outrage, spearheaded by figures like Peter Dutton, is shaping political discourse on issues ranging from national security to China.Song listing:‘Pretty Vacant', (cover version) Sofia Allard.‘The Honeymoon Is Over', The Cruel Sea. ‘Praise You', Fat Boy Slim.

Welcome to the second last show of Season 5, i.e. Episode 51.  It marks the 5th birthday of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  This episode went out live on 22 December 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 sharp.  Sadly the cell phone towers did not play ball and the signal was a serious killjoy.  The show however went out just perfectly on the podcast.  I used the opportunity to showcase some of the tracks that make TSORR what it is.  Some of these tracks are pretty deep and have backstories that are detailed in the book The Story of Rock and Roll.   This show gives an incredibly short reminiscence of some TSORR history and a bit of a run-through of the bands that form the foundations of The Story of Rock and Roll.   The idea was to celebrate the music and show appreciation for listeners who have supported the show for the last 5 years.  The celebration kicked off with The Boomtown Rats and the opening track off The Fine Art of Surfacing.  This album is part of the critical few albums that mark the start of my lifelong love of rock and roll. From there we moved to KISS and Judas Priest, two bands without which there wouldn't be a TSORR.  The tracks ‘Strutter' and ‘Metal Gods' did the honours.  Next, we covered two very important SA bands, Radio Rats with ZX Dan and Rabbitt with ‘Working For The People.   We checked out some of the key bands that form a big chunk of TSORR, Rainbow, Deep Purple, ACDC, and Ozzy Osbourne.  From there we covered some Punk because without a slight UK Punk detour this would not be TSORR.  We listened to The Strangler with Nice n' Sleazy, Sex Pistols with ‘Submission', and Stiff Litte Finger with ‘Alternative Ulster' off Inflammable Material.  We went back to the Metal with Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Accept, W.A.S.P., and Metallica. From there we moved on to the Radio Show and the Mix FM days and how Leon Ekonomides offered me my own show in 2017.  I played the track Leon and I bonded over when he interviewed me about the book.  The track was ‘Gunfire' by Blue Cheer.  We also celebrated the first-ever TSORR podcast (No 12, check it out if you haven't heard it) by starting with Jack Hammer and Mr. Midnight.  It felt right to follow up with a track I played on the show when Piet Botha passed away in 2019 called Highway To The Sun by Johnathan Martin.  We also remembered some other losses that we marked in time on TSORR, Eddie Van Halen in 2020 and Charlie Watts in 2021.  With the signal so bad and so many people struggling with the signal the only way I could do this justice was to add another hour to the show.  What the hell you only turn 5 once.  The last hour was a tribute to some amazing people who have supported the show and just as we were reaching the high point the whole fucking thing ended abruptly with a systems crash that prevented me from saying thanks and goodnight.  Such is life, we will have another bash at getting this right next year  Artists featured:  Sophie Lloyd (feat Nathan James), The Boomtown Rats, Kiss, Judas Priest, Rabbit, Radio Rats, Rainbow, Deep Purple, ACDC. Ozzy Osbourne, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden,, Accept, W.A.S.P., Metallica, Blue Cheer, Rush, Jack Hammer, Johnathan Martin, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher, Cold Chisel, ACDC, Seether, Buckcherry, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, The Clash, The Distillers, Massive Wagons, Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Thin Lizzy, Rose Tattoo, Guns ‘n' Roses, Tom Petty, Neil Young, The Uninvited, The Cruel Sea, Social Distortion, My Chemical Romance, Fokofpolisiekar  The Story of Rock and Roll. Tex Perkins is one of the finest and fiercest frontmen ever to stalk a stage, and the very definition of an artist who follows his instincts wherever they take him. He first made his name in Sydney in the '80s when he formed the primal rock band The Beasts Of Bourbon, but he had his greatest commercial success with The Cruel Sea, who for a while in the early to mid-'90s were one of Australia's biggest bands. Since then he's released many great albums with multiple projects, the latest being The Fat Rubber Band. This interview is a lot of fun and contains stories of rioting crowds, police run-ins, and the conclusion of a decades-long saga involving an ARIA Award, a bin, and a man named Ernie.

Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. The Cruel Sea (1953) Despite his guilt over a recent harrowing sea battle in which many of his men were lost, Lt. Cmdr. George Ericson (Jack Hawkins) is assigned to helm the new H.M.S. Compass Rose with the help of steadfast seaman Lt. Lockhart (Donald Sinden). When the small vessel is sent to escort convoys of ships fighting German U-boats in the North Atlantic, the mettle of the novice crew is tested by the weather, the turbulent sea and enemy attacks -- one of which nearly destroys the Compass Rose.   This is a story of the Battle of the Atlantic, the story of the ocean, two ships, and a handful of men. The men are the heroes; the heroines the ships. The only villain is the sea, the cruel sea that man has made more cruel. Despite the failed attempt to create a myth of a Pacific Ocean "Bermuda Triangle" near Taiwan, the seas around this island are indeed cruel... ships sometimes disappear without a trace. It's little wonder the majority of temples here are devoted to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, who watches over fishermen. We tell of shipping and transport vessels encountering tragedy, but two of this episode's most surprising stories involve unlikely victims: a dashing French baron crossing the Taiwan Strait, and sightseers on a lake cruise.

Episode 43 of Season 4 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 28 Oct 2021.  It was politically charged, I had no choice.  In the midst of load-shedding 4 times a day, labour unrest and trucks being burnt on the  N3, South Africa is on its knees due to the disastrous ANC government.  A rot started by Jacob Zum and perpetuated by Cyril Ramaposa is destroying the country.  Municipal elections are taking place on 1 November, this show is inextricably linked to this point in time.  We kicked off in party mode with My Chemical Romance and 'Vampire Money' off Danger Days.  next up Massive Wagons off their 2020 release House of Noise.  Then it was time for ACDC and it flowed from there.  There were plenty of classic bands.  We heard from the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Alice Cooper with 'Elected' (what else?).  New stuff came from Joe Bonamassa off his new Time Clocks album, and from KK's Priest with 'Metal Through and Through'.  Note that AA Milne is not in the band :-). As shows go it was pretty well balanced.  We had Venom, the godfathers of today's metal, with a track called 'Don't Burn the Witch'.  We had punk courtesy of The Stranglers and UK Subs, we had the blues with Joe Bonamassa and Rory Gallagher, we had amazing guitarists in Mr Big, Winery Dogs and with Gary Moore.  Reference was made to the situation with the songs.  For example, We had The Cruel Sea with 'Anybody But You',  Adrenaline Mob with 'Judgement Day',  'Race to Extinction' from Accept,  and, another track possibly written about the SA government titled 'Straight From Hell' by Helloween,  In the end, we had some good positivity with Little Steven and 'Out of the Darkness' which I sincerely hope I will be able to report on favourably next week.  We shall see. Artists featured:  My Chemical Romance, Massive Wagons, ACDC, The Rolling Stones, The Cruel Sea, Seether, Accept, Helloween, Anthrax, Ratt, Bad Company, Billy Talent, Soundgarden, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, KK's Priest, Adrenaline Mob, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Great White, Venom, The Stranglers, UK Subs, Anti-Flag, The Donnas, The Cult, Rush, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Mr Big, The Winery Dogs, Gary Moore, Judas Priest, Metallica, Little Steven, Richard O'Brien, The Uninvited

Season 3 Episode 10 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show was broadcast on 23 October 2020 at 7 pm.  There was a quick recovery from a botched intro and we were off and running with Guns ‘n' Roses' controversial masterpiece ‘One in a Million'.  That was followed up with some Deep Purple and then, into the lesser-known with Fozzy and Catalano.  I reckon this was the most diverse TSORR ever aired, I even played The Smith's for the first time ever, and I took flak on the Discord server for that J.  I made amends with the brand new Heathen called Empire of the Blind towards the end of the show. We took a listen to Bruce Springsteen's new track ‘Ghosts' for the second time in 3 weeks just because it is so good.  It's definitely my song of the year, impossible to be in a bad mood when listening to that little bit of upliftment.  The Punk was taken care of by The Damned and The Exploited with a bit of Billy Bragg and The Boomtown Rats thrown in for good measure.  The Grunge part was really cool with ‘Put You Down' off Alice in Chains' debut album Facelift.  We followed with yet another track off Redux, The Brendon O'Brien remix of Pearl Jam's masterpiece Ten.  A highlight for me was Temple of the Dog ‘s ‘Wooden Jesus' Chris Cornell was amazing on that. We checked out the brand new Blue Öyster Cult which is great and the new Heathen and then we slapped in some Francois Van Coke and finished off with Kid Rocks' Trucker Anthem.   I'd had a hell of a week as I mentioned a few times and I invented 'Bungle Time and gave it a theme song, see if you can relate :-)  Go to The Story of Rock and Roll on Facebook for any comments about that.   Artists featured:  Kid Rock, Temple of the Dog, Joe Bonamassa, Thin Lizzy, The Killers, ACDC, Heathen, Catalano, Guns ‘n' Roses, Francois Van Coke, Five Finger Death Punch, Buckcherry, Poison, Pearl Jam, The Raven Age, The Exploited, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen, Texas Hippie Coalition, The Damned, Blue Öyster Cult, The Gaslight Anthem, Fozzy, Autograph, Ozzy Osbourne, Chickenfoot, The Cruel Sea, The Smiths, Def Leppard, The Burning, Alice in Chains, The Boomtown Rats, Tom Petty, Deadline, Tesla, Van Halen, Billy Bragg, Skid Row, Deep Purple.

What if Nick Cave or Mark Lanegan decided to record an album of Bob Marley, ZZ Top, War, and Slim Harpo covers? That's the question posed by the 1993 album The Honeymoon Is Over by The Cruel Sea, an instrumental blues and surf band from Australia that added Beasts of Bourbon frontman Tex Perkins to create a weird and oddly compelling album. Somehow, that combination managers to come together better than we could have ever expected, as the players involved completely buy into the swampy grooves with organ stabs, lurching bass lines and more. It may not be for everyone, and we may not even agree on it completely, but it's definitely worth a spin to reorient your understanding that the 90s weren't just grunge, pop-punk, industrial rock, etc.   Songs In This Episode:   Intro - Delivery Man 5:27 - Black Stick 14:36 - Naked Flame 21:48 - Woman With Soul Outro - Better Than Love   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. She enrolled at the Central School of Drama but left after two years when offered six months in Repertory at Dundee. Classics such as the Cruel Sea, Carve Her Name with Pride and A Town Like Alice, for which she won a British Academy Award for Best Actress, have been highlights in a long and successful career. However her most remembered and best loved roles have been in Born Free and Ring of Bright Water, starring opposite her actor husband the late Bill Travers. For Born Free, she won the Variety Club Best Actress Award . Making Born Free in 1964, which told the true story of George and Joy Adamson as they returned Elsa the lioness to the wild, profoundly affected Bill and Virginia and it was a key influence in their lives. They realised that wild animals belong in the wild and should be protected there, not imprisoned in captivity. But the premature death in London Zoo of Pole Pole, a young elephant, who had featured in their film, An Elephant Called Slowly, led to the founding of Zoo Check in 1984. The Trust was dedicated to preventing the abuse of captive wild animals and strove to protect and conserve them in the wild. Zoo Check grew to become a major force in the animal welfare movement and was renamed The Born Free Foundation in 1991. She was awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List in 2004 for services to wildlife and the arts.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: We Are The Music Makers by Edward Elgar Book: Animal - the Definitive Visual Guide to the World's Wildlife by David Burnie Luxury: Language tapes to learn Italian and Swahali
