Before the name Angry Anderson was etched into the annals of Australian rock music history, before the explosive energy of Rose Tattoo dominated stages, and before the emotional hit single “Suddenly” melted hearts across the world, there was just a working-class kid from Melbourne with a lot of grit and one hell of a voice.Born Gary Stephen Anderson in 1947, in Melbourne, Angry's early years were shaped by a rough-and-tumble environment that would later fuel his gritty, growling vocal style and hard-edged lyrics. Growing up in a tough household and navigating the chaos of suburban Australia during the 50s and 60s, Angry developed a rebellious spirit early on. He wasn't just angry in name—it was an energy, a rawness, a defiance that became his brand.Angry's first brush with the music world came in the late 60s when he joined the psychedelic band Peace Power and Purity, but it wasn't long before he migrated toward something heavier, something louder, something that matched the fury he carried inside. He soon found himself fronting the Buster Brown band—a raw, blues-rock outfit that blended searing guitar riffs with Angry's sandpaper vocals.Buster Brown became known in the Australian pub rock circuit, with Anderson's stage presence quickly earning him a reputation as a firecracker performer who gave everything on stage. In 76, Angry joined a new band called Rose Tattoo. It was ferocious and unapologetically Aussie. Rose Tattoo wasn't just a rock band. They were a statement. With their bald heads, tattooed bodies, and denim-stained bravado, they embodied working-class rebellion, pub rock pride, and that dangerous edge of Aussie outlaw culture. Their debut self-titled album in 78, featuring hits like “Bad Boy for Love” and “Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw,” exploded onto the Australian charts and gained attention in Europe.Rose Tattoo were frequent support acts for AC/DC, and they earned massive respect from international bands like Guns N' Roses, who cited them as a major influence. But just when everyone thought they had Angry figured out—tattooed tough guy, snarling rock dog—he flipped the script. In 87, Angry released “Suddenly”, an emotional power ballad that no one saw coming. The song became a global phenomenon when it was used in Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan's wedding episode on the soap Neighbours, watched by millions. As the 90s rolled around, Angry became more than just a rock singer. He emerged as a tv personality. His charisma, honesty, and at times fiery opinions made him a household name in Australian media. In 92, he showed off his acting chops in the post-apocalyptic classic Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, starring alongside Mel Gibson and Tina Turner. But Angry also channeled his influence into causes he cared about. He became a passionate youth advocate, speaking out against domestic violence and drug abuse, drawing on his own difficult upbringing to connect with vulnerable communities. He even flirted with politics—running as a Senate candidate in later years.Despite countless lineup changes, personal tragedies—including the loss of many original Rose Tattoo members to cancer—and the ever-changing music landscape, Angry has kept the Rose Tattoo flame burning. He's the longest-tenured member and has fronted the band through decades of Australian and international tours. In recent years, Rose Tattoo have toured extensively across Australia and Europe, proving the band's enduring legacy. Angry, now in his 70s, continues to perform with the same raw energy that made him a legend in the first place.Angry Anderson isn't just an Australian rock icon—he's a survivor, a storyteller, and a symbol of the grit and soul that defines Australian hard rock.Discover all that makes Angry Anderson tick in this compelling episode. Guitarist Ronnie Simmons has spread his talents far and wide over the span of his playing career, travelling as far away as LA to play with Faster Pussycat and Richie Ramone before settling on a permanent gig with Australian rock royalty Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo. While travelling the world doing the thing you love may seem like the pinnacle of musical achievement, Simmons had one more peak to conquer.Fronting his own band. And what better way to launch into that next phase of your career than to record a collection of tunes, utilising the help of former bandmates and good friends to herald your arrival?Rather than jumping the gun with a product that has obvious potential but nothing by which to test that mettle, Simmons decided to commit a bunch of tracks to disk for future release before making his Australian assault, recording what would become his debut EP Bite! Part 1 at One More Time Recording in Los Angeles with the backing of Richie Ramone (The Ramones) and the late Chris Moye on drums, Johnny Martin (LA Guns) on bass, backing vocals by Danny Nordahl (Faster Pussycat) and Scott Churilla (Reverend Horton Heat). With this assortment of punk-fuelled rock numbers safely recorded, Simmons returned to Australia to start gigging with his new band Ronnie Simmons & The Redback Spiders, confident in the knowledge he had a viable product to sell. With the EP set for release on November 22, HEAVY sat down with Simmons for a chat about the new band plus anything else that seemed relevant."I'm excited," he enthused when we asked how the nerves were. "I was listening over the masters this morning and I'm really psyched to release this into the world."We point out that Ronnie is used to releasing music with other bands, but with this being his first out the front of a project, the pressure is on possibly more than usual."Yeah, this is the first time in a long, long time I'm out the front doing my own thing," he affirmed. "It's a very new experience for me, putting myself out there like that. A lot of these songs are straight from the heart, so it's very different to slotting into an already existing band. I'm enjoying it. It's a lot to think about, and it's a new experience, but I think I've got enough gigs and experience under my belt to give it a solid crack (laughs)."In the full interview, we discussed Bite! Part 1, with Ronnie explaining the sound is a mix of his various musical influences, including punk, ska, and rock. We spoke about the two singles released so far and how they represent the EP, as well as the decision to record in LA. He ran through his musical journey from LA back to Australia and the advantage of playing in bands of differing styles and genres.Talk turned to the band's upcoming run of shows, with Ronnie telling us what to expect from the band live and who is in the outfit full time plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

There is definitely something special about Australian rock.No matter how many bands around the world try to emulate that spirit, few actually get close to the sound that has shaped a nation. What many people outside of this country can't comprehend is that Aussie rock can't be just learnt or played. It has to exist inside you, gnawing away at your bones until it reaches the surface and manifests itself into something much more.Bands like Rose Tattoo, The Poor and the Screaming Jets have that rock swagger in abundance but most of the new or emerging generation can't quite seem to grasp the concept. So, then, it is refreshing and exciting when a new band comes on the scene that taps straight into that invisible well of talent and moves backwards to go forwards on a musical plain.Usually – as is the case with Truck – the band members have some pedigree in the old school of rock, for this is something difficult to learn and even harder to master. With an engine room that involves Baby Animals guitarist Dave Leslie and the vocal prowess of Andy McLean from Horsehead there was never any doubt what trajectory Truck's music would follow. It is exactly what you would expect.Pure Aussie rock. Front to back. Side to side. In and out. After releasing their third single in eight months, the raw and rock drenched number Unconventionally Rising, Truck drove straight out to the highway for a string of shows with Baby Animals and Rose Tattoo, proving the old adage that music is in the blood. Yes, it can be taught, but lessons can only ever teach you so much.HEAVY caught up with Dave for a chat and to find out how he has managed to keep the rock flame burning successfully for so long."This is kind of the stuff we grew up on, you know,” he agreed. “As far as that aesthetic goes, we wanted to be old school, heavy like Deep Purple and the Faces, that sort of thing. Just unapologetically classic rock. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel or anything like that, but we definitely wear our influences on our sleeves."While I have him on a roll, I ask Dave what it is that he thinks defines the spirit of Aussie rock."I think Angry Anderson put it well one time when he said no-one attacks a guitar like an Australian,” he laughed. “There's a certain sort of... you play from the front foot, you know what I mean? It's like there's a bit of a kill aspect going, and we have that as well. One time we supported Rose Tattoo down here in Melbourne and they did their soundcheck then we jumped up and they let us use their drum kit and everything like that, and all the foldback levels were set from where their sound check was, and man, it was the loudest gig we have ever played. The crew were like phwar. There was guitar screaming at me through wedges and I thought wow, this is so loud, and the crew were saying do you want us to turn it down and we said no, no (laughs). It was blistering, but we had a really good night that night as a result of that."In the full interview, Dave talks about finding like minded musicians to play in Truck with, the new single Unconventionally Rising, their limited edition physical EP, plans to extend that into an album, being on the road with Rose Tattoo and Baby Animals, playing two shows some nights with different bands and how he focusses, their upcoming single launch party at Melbourne's Cherry Bar and more. Rose Tattoo are part of Australian history.Their rock and blues swagger has deliver hits such as Bad Boy For Love, Rock N Roll Outlaw, Nice Boys Don't Play Rock N Roll and more, but it is the enduring majesty that is frontman Angry Anderson that has seen the band passed down musically from generation to generation, their tales of Aussie living and respect local folklore. After a successful recent run of shows as part of Under The Southern Stars, Rose Tattoo return for an all Australian line-up of classic rock dubbed Fistful Of Rock, featuring themselves, The Angels, The Poor and Baby Animals. It is a line-up sure to make the mouths of rock fans salivate intensely, but also one which once again showcases the strength of Australian music. With the first show of the brief tour set down for April 29 at Brisbane's Eatons Hill Hotel – and the second for Sydney's Enmore Theatre on September 2 – Angry sat down with HEAVY to talk about the shows and more of the life and times of Rose Tattoo."There's only a few shows in the festival around the country but it's a terrific idea,” he enthused. “It gives the punters bang for buck. It was always a great idea... I mean these days, when was the last time you bought a schooner? I couldn't believe how much it was, and then you think to yourself why does a schooner cost so much money? Basically it's because of the money the government makes out of it... but let's not get into that! It's giving people value for money is always a good idea, particularly with rock and roll because they're the people who buy your albums, buy your merch and support you year after year. We've got supporters that go right back that drag their kids along to see the Tatts. They've been with us for 40 years."Rose Tattoo have played with all three of the other bands countless times over the years, but we put Angry on the spot a touch when we ask him to recall the first time he saw each band and what he thought of them."I remember the first time (seeing The Angels) - and I think it might have been Adelaide,” he mused. “It might have even been the late years of Buster, or more than likely the early years of the Rosey Tatts. It was so far back that they all had quite a bit of hair (laughs). Doc was playing bass and they were a four piece. They had just recently stopped being a Jug band and they were playing the early version of the style of music that made them famous. Until Doc took over as a singer, I can't remember exactly because it was so long ago, and the next time I saw them Doc was out front and I was like Wow, this is something that is going to work. He was so... the songs have always been good and you can have good songs but unless you have someone to sell the song itself, the visual, and it can be a whole band like KISS where everyone participates. With The Angels they had really cool songs but what made them was Doc. He was electrifying on every level. Baby Animals, first time I saw them I had only heard them a bit on the radio and I thought cool songs. I love successful music – most musos do - but no matter what genre it is, even if it's not your personal taste. I remember seeing them and you fall in love with Suzie's stage presence, but also with her voice. Her voice is magnificent. I remember the first time I saw The Poor and again, really cool band. Skenie is just... he's an old school frontman. He is a force to be reckoned with. They are a powerful line-up and again, the great thing about it is bang for buck. You're gonna get four of the best across the genre of rock and roll and heavy rock, you're getting the best there is.”In the full interview Angry runs us through the longevity of the Tatts and why he thinks they resonate after all these years, the early days of Rose Tattoo and where they fit in, refining their rock and blues sound and how it came into being, the moment he realized Rose Tattoo might be onto something as a band, keeping that connection with the fans, when he thinks the curtain could be drawn on the Tatts, his top 3 Commandments of Rock and more.

Lockdown and gig cancellations presented challenges to all in the music industry. Many worked on new music, took up a day-job and some sat back on their millions and waited for covid to be over. Mark Gable and Choirboys started doing weekly live streams, to thousands of fans also locked down in their homes. After forming in 1978, and playing hundreds of gigs in (pretty much) every pub in Australia, this was a game changer for the band. They released a 9 track album from those covid performances, with a brand new song (first in 15 years). You'll hear the story on the origins of that song too. Mark is always a great chat, he'll explain where 'they went wrong' at Alberts Music in the early years of the band. Some great stories of pub riders from around the country, and what happened when he first met Angry Anderson!! This is Mark Gable from Choirboys, on The Rider with Becko

Angry Anderson has rocked and entertained us all for decades as the unequivocal front man of Rose Tattoo. He has torn up world stages with the voice of a working man's Rod Stewart and one of Australia's most abiding rock icons! Also known for his generous charity work, journalism, a stint at public office and having received numerous Awards including ARIA Hall of Fame (2006), Advance Australia Award (1986), Australian A.M. (1993) and the Special Merit Advance Australia Award (1995), he is very well versed on a number of different levels! Now, his new project the Angry Anderson Band releases a first recorded offering, ‘Realise Legalise' on November 19. Before you start thinking ‘what the' there is a strong positive message Angry wants to portray with this rock track! With an eye towards the future and a product, we should all be supporting ‘Realise Legalise' stands firmly on this terra firma. “Brothers and Sisters, we are living in strange and therefore exciting times, as to this, there can be no doubt! Depression, anxiety, and the fear of the future go hand in hand with the promise of a better world that we can all play a part in creating. We are constantly bombarded with talk of sustainability, conservation, preservation, and a growing acceptance of a dependency on renewables! Renewables! Just what are renewables? I hear voices asking. Some would call them gifts from God. Some would quite rightly refer to them as gifts from nature, the creational process, the provider, they are, put simply, that which comes from the natural realm. From Mother Nature herself! They are Earth, Wind, Water, and Sunshine! Truly gifts, from the Divine! It is with this spirit of embracing that which is natural to further the comfort and well-being of humanity and in the spirit of true debate that I want to play a small part in opening the conversation around the utilization of one of Nature's gifts, the genus Cannabis. Launching a new solo project/band, l was energized to revisit and then continue a personal journey, crusade if you like, that started many years ago. ln recent years I have been inspired by personal relationships with people from all around our homeland as they struggled to gain access to medicinal cannabis to relieve their own suffering or that of a loved one, also I came across a book written by a doctor, Dr. Teresa Towpik, which I urge all interested to seek out and read, her book, 'introduction to Medicinal Cannabis, An Easy Guide For Doctors and Patients', enlightened and educated me to the amazing contribution medicinal cannabis does and can make when medically provided. There are many more worthwhile uses for genus cannabis in the manufacturing sector which would gift us with products that are sustainable and therefore renewable, prime example it could, I'm advised, revolutionize the manufacture of paper, cardboard and, building materials and even replace plastic. Why then are we afraid to open honest debate into Cannabis? A gift from the past that can benefit our future. l, for one, am not afraid.” - Angry Anderson. ‘Realise Legalise' is available on your favourite digital platforms on November 19. https://www.facebook.com/Gary4Angry7Anderson --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shawn-ratches/support

Angry Anderson is a dead set Aussie legend.Since 1976 he has fronted iconic rock outfit Rose Tattoo with a defiant swagger and parochial sense of belonging that has endeared him to audiences the world over.He has always said what he means and, more importantly, backed his views and opinions. If Angry is ever angry, believe me, you would know about it, and after nearly five decades in the music industry Anderson is channeling that viewpoint into a new solo/collaboration project with one of Australia's fastest rising rock bands. The AA Band – as it is known for now – will release their debut single Realise, Legalise on November 19, allowing Anderson to voice his opinion on one of the many causes he fights openly for, medicinal marijuana. The track is not quite what you would expect from Anderson, with strong lashings of funk and a touch of electronica proving that when it comes to musical creativity, the only impediment to change and progress is the limitations you place on yourself."You've gotta understand, this isn't Rosey Tarts (Rose Tattoo),” Anderson said. “It's the AA Band, and let me tell you folks, it doesn't stand for Alcoholics Anonymous (laughs). AA stands for Angry Anderson Band. We haven't got a name yet, but maybe that's gonna stick, I don't know. The point is, this is my band. They're a wonderful band within their own right, they're a band that we share a manager with, a band called Palace Of The King. They have done many, many opening spots for the Tatts and I think it's a marriage made in heaven. They've got a different musicality approach to the Tatts and I couldn't be happier about that. And it's no more evident than in this single. It is funky. It is different, and it's something that we as a band… we've got an album that we're working on now coming out, which is a collection of previously released Angry Anderson tracks re-recorded and reworked in the same way that this song has.”In the full interview, Angry talks in greater detail about the message behind the new song, the political obstacles placed in front of the push, his new band, upcoming music, the state of the Australian music industry and more.

John Swan OAM, better known as Swanee, was born John Archibold Dixon Swan in Glasgow, Scotland in 1952, and migrated to Australia with his family in 1961. John is an Australian rock singer who started his musical career as a Drummer when he was 11, when he joined the Elizabeth Caledonian Pipe Band. When his mother remarried in the mid-1960s, he was the only child to keep the surname of his biological father. John left school aged 13 and joined his first professional band Happiness, as a drummer when he was fourteen. When he was seventeen, he enlisted in the Australian Army, and was discharged after two years of service. In early 1974 he was the drummer with The James Wright Band, moving on to Jim Keays' Southern Cross for a short time. In 1975 he joined Adelaide band Fraternity MK II replacing Bon Scott on vocals for two years. In 1977 he became the vocalist with Feather. This band had been known as Blackfeather in the early 1970s, but by 1977 no original members were left so the name was shortened. Feather recorded one single with John, "Girl Trouble", before he left in 1978 to establish himself as a solo artist. Under the name Swanee by which he was already known, he released his debut solo single "Crazy Dreams" in 1979. An album, Into the Night, and several other singles followed. In late 1981, his version of "If I Were a Carpenter" became a national hit, peaking at number 5. The single was followed by the 1982 studio album This Time It's Different that spawned another two hits, "Temporary Heartache" and "Lady What's Your Name". In 1987, he replaced Angry Anderson as lead singer of The Party Boys. John's time with the band proved to be the group's most successful period. A cover of the John Kongos song "He's Gonna Step On You Again" peaked at number 1 on the Australian charts. The band's self-titled album made the Australian top 20. He remained with the band until 1989 before going solo again. In 2015, John was announced as South Australia's Senior Australian of the Year, and in 2017, recognised for his work with various charitable organizations, he was appointed an Order of Australia Medal (OAM). A former SAS soldier, many people would now know Wayne Jones as the co-founder, CEO and Director of the Indoor Skydive Australia Group, an ASX listed company operating wind tunnels throughout Australia and the near region.  However, prior to his success in business, Wayne honed his freefall skills within the SAS Regiment, including leading the first operational military freefall mission in the history of the Australian Army. In this special double episode, Wayne talks to Ben and Tim about his experiences inside and outside of uniform.  In this first installment, Wayne shares a little about his background in rural South Australia and his early years in the Army, including his harrowing deployment to Rwanda during which his section witnessed the atrocities of the infamous Kibeho massacre.  Wayne then reveals his SAS Selection Course secrets and describes his time within the Unit, and his multiple operational deployments, including to Iraq with the UK Special Forces in 2006.  Finally, Wayne share some insights into his career as a rock god, including what it's like to have Angry Anderson sing backup for you! Intelligence Summary (INTSUM) 03:35   Wayne's childhood – and why growing up in small town in rural South Australia can serve as a great incentive to join the Army! 06:30   Recruit training at Kapooka, then infantry training at Singleton, graduating on his 18th birthday and posting up to the 2nd Battalion…. 08:15   …and into Rwanda, on his first deployment 10:30   The threat – and how confused the landscape was at that time in Rwanda.  Simmering tension, hugely outnumbered – and no real chance of back-up 12:45   Wayne's experiences at the Kibeho IDP (internally displaced personnel) camp – one of the worst massacres in recent history 16:45   The confusion of being witness to a full-scale infantry battalion assault….onto an unarmed crowd 21:50   Going back in the next day…and the importance of mateship in getting you through a situation like that 23:00   Processing atrocity – how Wayne has dealt with everything he saw at Kibeho 26:00   Musical Interlude!  Ben and Wayne murdering the classic James song Laid in a B-hut in Afghanistan, circa 2008.  It's amazing the sound quality you can get recording Afghan-made nylon string guitars in a bomb-proof shipping container on an iPhone… 27:00   Back from Rwanda….and onto SAS selection.  Fun Fact:  Wayne was on the same selection course as F18 pilot Tim Robertson – the chronic overachiever we interviewed way back in season one! 31:00   Extrinsic motivators – after all we've said in previous episodes, turns out they work! 32:30   Wayne's rules for himself during selection 35:00   Musical Interlude – Kelly's Last Dance, a Tongue Charge tune that Wayne wrote about Ned Kelly.  Or an ex-girlfriend.  Or an ex-girlfriend that looked like Ned Kelly – we were never sure 35:40   Wayne's first impression of the SAS regiment 39:00   Leadership in the SAS – and how to broker the distinction between leadership and ‘likership' 43:50   Wayne's experience on exchange with UK Special Forces in Iraq, 2006 47:50   The genesis of Tongue Charge – SAS band, and The External's lesser-known (and far less tuneful) little brother.  50:45   Tongue Charge's first gig – ‘you suck!' 52:45   …and their best gig, with Angry Anderson on backing vocals 54:30   The significance of Getting Away With It, the awesome James song that Tongue Charge would end every show with 56:00   The devastating loss of Craig ‘Crackers' Linacre – an absolute legend, and the original Tongue Charge lead singer   External Links Wayne's company iFLY Australia – get involved with some indoor freefall!   Music Tongue Charge!  Recorded in various locations from Cottesloe Beach to Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan
