Ever wondered what happened to Little River Band's Glenn Shorrock? Do you know which songs Glenn wrote for the band? Or how the original LRB lost their name? Listen in here to find out answers to these and a whole lot of other questions about Australia's most famous band as Glenn Shorrock joins us for an intimate chat. English born Glenn Shorrock is one of the most iconic and influential singer-songwriters to emerge from Australia's rich music scene. Best known as the founding lead vocalist of Little River Band, Glenn's career spans over six decades, marked by global chart success, critically acclaimed albums, and unforgettable live performances. His deep, resonant voice and exceptional songwriting have defined the soundtracks of generations, contributing timeless classics that have shaped the landscape of classic rock and pop. Glenn's family moved to Adelaide in the 50s, where his love for music blossomed. By the early 60s, he co-founded The Twilights, a rock band that became one of Australia's most popular groups. The Twilights achieved national fame then in 69, Glenn co-founded Axiom, often regarded as one of Australia's first ‘supergroups.' Alongside music legend Brian Cadd, Axiom crafted sophisticated, soulful rock with hits like A Little Ray of Sunshine and Arkansas Grass. The band's blend of folk, rock, and pop elements set a new standard for Australian music, earning both critical and commercial success. The mid-70s saw Glenn co-found Little River Band . Combining lush harmonies and rock-driven melodies, LRB became the first Australian band to achieve sustained international success. As the lead vocalist, Glenn was the unmistakable voice behind all of their global hits, including “Reminiscing,” “Help Is on Its Way,” “Lonesome Loser,” “Cool Change,” and “Lady.” Little River Band enjoyed unprecedented success in the US with their sophisticated sound earning them 13 American Top 40 hits between 75 and 83. Shorrock's voice became synonymous with the band's transcontinental appeal. In 82, after some infighting amongst band members, Glenn went solo and has enjoyed considerable success ever since. Throughout the 80s and beyond, Shorrock released a series of solo works, dabbled in musical theatre and collaborated with several of his musical mates. Glenn was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame as part of Little River Band in 2004. Today at 80, Glenn Shorrock still inspires generations of musicians and songwriters and his songs which are often infused with themes of nostalgia, love, and self-reflection, continue to resonate with listeners around the world. Glenn remains a vibrant force in the music scene. He still performs live, delighting fans with renditions of his classic hits while introducing new music that highlights his ever-evolving artistry. His autobiography, Now, Where Was I?, offers an intimate glimpse into his storied life and career, showcasing the ups and downs of a truly remarkable musical journey. Shorrock's longevity in the industry is a testament to his talent, passion, and connection to his fans. His voice remains as captivating as ever, and his influence on rock, pop, and the Australian music legacy is enduring. #glennshorrock #littleriverband #australianrockhistory #1970srockmusic I truly hope you enjoy this episode with Glenn. Born to parents who both worked in the entertainment industry, Dannielle Gaha grew up surrounded by singing and dancing, training and helping out at the talent school run by her mother, Janice Breen. She made her first steps into the industry herself by appearing on TV talent contest Star Search, which led to ongoing singing work with judge Glenn Shorrock and, through that, her big break — being picked to record duet "Communication" with John Farnham. Dannielle, who now goes by her married name DeAndrea, recalls those early stages of her career and what it was like performing with the biggest male singer in the country on the anti-drugs hit. She also discusses the music she released as a solo performer, Australian single "I Like It" and the three tracks through her deal with Epic Records in the UK: "Stuck In The Middle", "Do It For Love" and "Secret Love", most of which involved input from Wa Wa Nee's Paul Gray. Although that solo pop career didn't take off as she hoped, she landed on her feet in the mid-'90s with an ongoing gig as one-half of The Nissan Cedrics on Roy & HG's series, Club Buggery, and since then has carved out a diverse career in a range of musical styles.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

From an isolated and socially awkward teenager in Adelaide to an internationally renowned musician, GRAEHAM GOBLE's journey is one of perseverance and dedication. As a key member of the Little River Band, Graeham strove to compete with the world's best musicians and songwriters, weathering setbacks and challenges along the way. The band's tenacity and talent saw them quickly rise to prominence, captivating audiences with their tight live performances. For Graeham, his sole focus was always the music, eschewing the temptations of the rock and roll lifestyle in favour of honing his song writing skills. It was this unwavering commitment to his passion that allowed the Little River Band to claim the crown as the first internationally successful Australian supergroup. When Little River Band initially formed in Melbourne in 1975, the group's key band members were already well-known to many Australians. Lead singer, Glenn Shorrock had made his name first in the mid-'60s group, The Twilights  and later with Axiom, whose 1970 single "A Little Ray of Sunshine" eventually became an Australian classic rock staple. Guitarist Beeb Birtles had initially been the bass player for a group called Zoot (Rick Springfield was a later member) then later joined guitarist Graeham Goble and drummer Derekk Pellici in the popular country-rock and LRB precursor, Mississippi. Even the band's manager, Glenn Wheatley, carried a significant pedigree as the former bassist for the Masters Apprentices. Through the 70s the band released hit after hit after hit. They toured widely and their acceptance in the U.S. was mirrored and subsequently exceeded by their prominence back home. They headed confidently into the '80s with a string of hit albums and an international reputation. But things began to splinter with the departure of key founding members, singer Glenn Shorrock and guitarist Beeb Birtles and by 1985, their profile in the US began to dip with a change in both sound and membership.   After a series of albums with singer John Farnham at the helm, Shorrock reentered the picture and Little River Band managed to retain their popularity in Australia through the end of the decade. The group continued to bleed personnel and by 1998, no original members remained involved in the band and the legal rights to the name were claimed by '80s members Stephen Housden and Wayne Nelson. Housden and Nelson toured a version of LRB throughout the 2000's despite numerous legal battles with the group's founding members, who had authored all of their best-known material. Nelson continues to run LRB today with no original members. Recently, the much-loved Australian hitmakers (the original band) have released two new collections, Ultimate Hits and Masterpieces. Both commemorate the songbook and achievements of one of the most popular pop-rock bands in the world from the mid-1970s and throughout the 1980s. During that time, LRB built a catalogue of memorable signature songs and global sales of some 30 million records across 12 studio albums. Join me to hear Graeham Goble chat about Little River Band's incredible story. When looking back at the biggest bands of the mid to late 1960's in Australia, The Easybeats and The Masters Apprentices immediately spring to mind and rightly so, both these bands were absolutely massive, however, ranking right alongside them in the popularity stakes was Adelaide band, The Twilights. The Twilights had 9 singles make the charts over a 2 year period including a No.1 hit with Needle in a Haystack. As well as a No.1 hit record, they also had another 4 singles make it into the Top 5 on the National Charts. It wasn't just on the charts that the Twilights excelled either, they quickly gained a reputation for being one of finest live bands in Australia. This is further highlighted by the fact they would go onto become the national winners of the prestigious Hoadley Battle of the Sounds competition in 1966. The winners prize included a trip to London for the band and a recording session at Abbey Road Studios - and as luck would have it, The Beatles just happened to be down the hallway recording Penny Lane. Our special guests are former Twilights, Australian music icon Glenn Shorrock and Grammy Award winner, Terry Britten.

The Engine Room Guest: Laurie Kennedy, has been mentioned in many of my previous interviews due to him having been an in-demand drum teacher and player in South Australia for 40 years. His playing career began in NSW when families gathered together and listened to music shows, drama serials, light entertainment and quiz programs on the radio, Rock 'n' roll was popular in dance halls, and Jazz and Coffee Lounges were The Scene! He has worked with the 'who's who' of the entertainment industry, working in Television, Radio, Musical Theatre, Cabaret, Jazz, Rock, and Orchestral. He has had a truly remarkable musical journey and it was an honour to have him share his story with me. If you enjoy historical stories about the Australian Music Industry, then this episode is definitely for you! The first professional band that he joined was the 'Warren LeRoy Trio', playing at the El Rocco followed by the 'Macambo Quartet' who were very popular at the Macambo Coffee Lounge, where they had a stint of around 4 years during the early 1960s. Late in 1965 he joined his one and only Pop Group called The Grape Escape with Brian Godden, Chris Bonett, and singer/songwriter Norma Stoneman. The Grape Escape signed to RCA Records and released a couple of singles with ''The Easy Life'' (Feb 25th 1967) being the most successful, he returned to NSW when the band called it a day. Laurie worked as a studio drummer at TCN-9 on the Desmond Tester Children's Television show the 'Channel 9- Pins', prior to moving to Adelaide in 1968. In Adelaide he played with the Borodin Quartet at the Paprika Nightclub for 5 years, the band worked 6 nights a week, 7 hours a night! His first teaching job was at Pulteney Grammar School, followed by Blackfriars Priory School, and St Peter's College. In addition, Laurie was an in-demand lecturer in drum, percussion, and rhythm at the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide for 32 years, and lecturer at Noarlunga TAFE for 10 years. He wrote ‘A Guide to Exploring Rhythm - All Instruments and Voice', among other teaching materials. Laurie lived, played and taught in Adelaide for half his lifetime, returning to live in NSW to be closer to his sons when he retired. He has accompanied international Jazz and Variety Artists, did many concerts tours and recordings with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, as well as concerts with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Recorded with Don Burroughs, James Morrison, George Golla, Errol Buddle, Ted Nettelbeck, Schmoe (Sylvan Elhay), Andy Sugg, and many others. Backing for local variety acts such as Barry Crocker, Julie Anthony, Ricky May, Glenn Shorrock, Kamal, Judith Durham, and many more. International variety artists include Harry Secombe, Platters, Eartha Kitt, Dick Emery, Cilla Black, Ronnie Corbett, Danny La Rue, and so many more that It is impossible for me to list them all. Music: Intro "Band It About" theme written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro: "Sol Fuego" - Australian Jazz Quintet, Errol Buddle - flute, Bruce Hancock - piano, Ed Gaston - bass and Laurie Kennedy - drums. Recorded at Adelaide Town Hall.   The Association was a pretty popular late-'60s singing group. Think Three Dog Night. Like that. Pretty similar arc. You know "Cherish", "Along Comes Mary", "Windy", etc. After the hits dried up, members like Jerry Yester fought the inevitable slide into oldies tours with the odd single, tour, and always in a state of flux. In 1975, a cobbled-together version of the band recorded what would be known to fans as "The Association Bites Back". While RCA was the record company of...record...they do not have tapes that they can remaster for a waiting public. But replacement member Larry Brown did put some of the songs on YouTube. Cassette quality, but a nice historical curio of a once-thriving concern. Here are 4.  And oldies tours are exactly where they ended up. Think Three Dog Night.    Travelin' Boy That's What She Said Time to Get High Cherish (a disco remake with a strangely funkified coda.)   The Pullice - Can't Get Enough (1966) As seen on the lower right, this is how they spelled their name.  McDonald's Commercial (1969) Grady Tate - Multiplication Rock “6” (1973) Nostalgia for POACA. Born in Durham, NC, in a district called “Hayti”, the historic African-American community that is now part of the city of Durham, North Carolina. It was founded as an independent black community shortly after the American Civil War on the southern edge of Durham by freedmen coming to work in tobacco warehouses and related jobs in the city. By the early decades of the 20th century, African Americans owned and operated more than 200 businesses, which were located along Fayetteville, Pettigrew, and Pine Streets, the boundaries of Hayti. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the neighborhood continued to develop through years of racial segregation imposed by white Democrats in the state legislature, following the Reconstruction era in the South. With black-owned businesses and services, a library, a hotel, a theatre, and a hospital, the community became self-sufficient. It declined in the late 20th century, due to suburbanization, which drew some residents to newer housing outside the area. A 1958 urban renewal and freeway project took down houses and businesses in 200 acres of the community and split it with a freeway. St. Joseph's African Methodist Episcopal Church (1891) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; its congregation was founded in 1868. The church has been used since 1975 as a community and cultural center. Hayti's residents have included African Americans who achieved national reputations for their successes. Friends of mine say they can't find much that's left.  21 Years of Rock n Roll (1977)  "The record that launched the Rock 'n' Roll era became a hit in Australia in July 1956. It proved to be one of the most fantastic hits of all time with collective sales estimated at over 22 million. 'Rock around the Clock' has been waxed in thirty-five different languages with over 140 versions globally. 2SM/3XY/4IP with the ANZ Bank commissioned the cream of Australian rock talent to record this limited-edition tribute to 21 years of Rock 'n' Roll. After the band broke up in late 1969, Radle went on to play in Delaney & Bonnie and, shortly afterward, Derek & the Dominoes and J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton. In the midst of the British Invasion and the surge of Motown Records, Bethea took on the persona of “The Maskman", first donning the mask in 1968. Steve Todd became a professional musician when he was 19, and has worked in the industry ever since. Born in to a family of entertainers Steve's profession was predestined, his father John Todd was a drummer, his mother a founding member of the 'Ethelton Entertainers' theatre group, and his grandfather a vaudevillian, it was a given that both he and his brother Larry would work in the industry. Steve was taught by Reg Bassett who not only taught him how to play, he taught him how to secure ongoing opportunities within the music industry. Steve first began playing while in Primary School, both he and Larry played the snare drum that was used to march the students into class everyday. He joined his first (out of school band) 'Bennie & The Jets' while attending High School, and his first major band was 'Centaur' (Adelaide Australia), this band saw him leave Adelaide for the first time, they toured up and down the East Coast. After leaving this band he returned to Adelaide and studied music to gain the reading skills required that would enable him to work as a freelance musician. In 1985 Steve began working for Banksia Productions, this is where he started to work in television and radio. Adelaide had one of the best music scenes in Australia, every TV Station had a House Band, and Steve had regular work during the day in children's television shows, recording and touring with 'Here's Humphrey', 'The Music Shop', 'The Book Place', and 'The Fairies' to name a few. Steve has recorded and toured with children's entertainer Peter Coombe for the past 30 years. He was the House Drummer for 'Pepper Studios', has worked with both the State Theatre Company and the Australian Dance Theatre, and spent 16 years playing with the 'South Australian Police Band'. Steve performed with various bands including 'Goose', and had a 7 year residency at the Grenfell Tavern with 'Mixed Bag'. In 2017 he was invited to join a group of Adelaide musicians who are collectively known as the 'Hindley Street Country Club' (HSCC), they release a cover of an 80s hit song every week, and have become so popular that they have had over 100 million views on YouTube! Major highlight's of Steve's career include playing percussion with his idols Jon English and Peter Cupples (Stylus), when they toured performing unplugged versions of their hits, and performing "A Little Ray Of Sunshine" with Glenn Shorrock and Brian Cadd. Personal highlight's performing onstage with his dad, brother, son and nephew, and every time that he gets to perform or record with his son Ben, Ben Todd was the (S2 E15) Engine Room Guest. It's the 26th of January and amid much reflection on Australia's history and South Australia's history, it became clear that we've had one omission throughout this community project known as The Adelaide Show. Even though our full theme song about Adelaide acknowledges the Kaurna people, we have never done an acknowledgement of country at the start of our episodes. That changes today. Caitlin Davis, one of our voiceover angels, has recorded it for us and all future episodes will begin with it. In today's episode, we have slice of what a South Australia Day looks like. In the SA Drink Of The Week, we taste Green Ant Gin produced by Something Wild, an Indigenous-owned company supplying Indigenous produce. With the Adelaide Fringe upon us, we hear Steve Davis interviewed by local media legend, Mark Aiston, about Steve's upcoming one-man show, A Lunchtime MBA. Please do something different this Fringe; take a slightly extended lunch break and hop into Treasury 1860 for an hour of laughter based on business principles. Oh, and you'll leave with an MBA certificate! Then we'll hear a little about the story of the Prairie Hotel, right up in the Flinders Ranges at Parachilna. Steve had a chance to sit down with Jane Fargher to get the story of the pub that stretches decades in a landscape that reflects millions of years of change. We also had an interview with Glenn Shorrock, no, not that one, the one from Sterlows Sheds and Structures at Stirling North, Port Augusta. Glenn's a dynamic bloke who's creating a new construction initiative in the region, as well as in Adelaide. However, dust got in the way. More details in the show. And thanks to fellow podcaster, John Murch of the Radionotes Podcast, we've been introduced to Matt Cahill from local band, Evoletah, and we get to hear a new song from them.
