In October 2002, a series of sniper attacks terrorized residents of Washington D.C. and the surrounding area. For three weeks, civilians were shot at random, sporadically injured, and killed while completing mundane activities in their day-to-day routine. As the shootings continued to unfold, people within the D.C. communities were paralyzed with fear, too afraid to step outside and live their lives. With virtually no actionable leads, law enforcement was tasked with the difficult mission of hunting down the Beltway Snipers. Retired U.S. Marshal Bill Sorukas was the Chief Inspector within the Investigative Operations Division at the time of the attacks. He shares how he became involved in the Beltway Sniper case, the sensitivity of the investigation, and how he was able to track down the shooters. At 3:19 in the morning on October 24, 2002, the FBI closed in on the snipers and their 1990 Chevy Caprice. During the month, 10 people had been randomly gunned down and three critically injured while going about their everyday lives—mowing the lawn, pumping gas, shopping, reading a book. Among the victims was one of our own—FBI intelligence analyst Linda Franklin, who was felled by a single bullet while leaving a home improvement store in Virginia with her husband. But now, the attacks—which had terrorized the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area—had finally come to an end. #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimepodcast #crime #murder #podcast #truecrimeaddict #serialkiller #serialkillers #truecrimejunkie #horror #unsolved #murderino #podcastersofinstagram #truecrimeobsessed #mystery #ssdgm #truecrimefan #killer #truecrimememes #creepy #unsolvedmysteries #paranormal #podcasts #tedbundy #history #criminal #podcasting #scary #murdermystery #dahmer #jeffreydahmer #DC SNIPERS #beltway #beltway snipers

In October of 2002, the DC Snipers terrorized residents of Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland for three weeks. During that time, people lived in constant fear that they'd be killed - shot down - while in the midst of doing normally safe and benign daily activities like pumping gas, waiting for the bus, or even just walking across a parking lot to do some shopping. In total, ten people would be murdered, three people were critically injured, and others would be randomly shot at. Hundreds of FBI agents and local police officers would work this case before it was over. They were desperate to catch the man who was dubbed the DC Sniper or Beltway Sniper by the media. Except it wasn't one man. Investigators were looking for a lone, white, male gunman. They had no idea how wrong their profile was. When it was all over, 41-year-old John Muhammad and 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo - both black - would be arrested. And now the authorities had to unravel the strange father-son relationship between the two, and uncover their motive for their shootings. And that is a lot of what we look into today. Their relationship, more akin to cult leader and cult follower than it was to the normal killing duo dynamic. Hope you find this story as interesting as I do! For three weeks in the year 2002, an Army vet and a seventeen-year-old kid crisscrossed the Washington DC area doing one thing: murdering innocent people chosen at random. Did they do it to extort ten million dollars from the government to start a utopian society? Or was it to murder a wife, and take back custody of children? And why would a young man follow so aimlessly the orders of another, ultimately becoming the man responsible for weeks of shootings? This is the story of John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo. The DC Snipers.

We all have routines. It's likely that when we go to work, run daily errands and simply go out for the day, everything will continue as usual. However, this was not the case in the DC Beltway back in 2002. Between October 2-22 of that year, John Allen Muhammed and his companion Lee Boyd Malvo executed violent attacks by using sniper tactics against local citizens in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas. For three weeks, people were terrified that they, too, would be shot at as they went about their day.Join Deb and Beth as they discuss prior violence leading up to these events, and how the community came together to catch a killer.Find us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest @Dying2BFound.Subscribe, rate, and share our podcasts on Spotify, Apple & Google Podcast, Stitcher, Pandora, and iHeart Radio. If you are interested in sponsoring this podcast or have a storyline you would like us to record, please email us at dying2bfound@gmail.com.If you like what you hear, please visit us at www.dyingtobefound.com to learn more about your hosts and our podcast, or consider buying us a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dyingtobefoundReferences:ABC News AustraliaThe Associated PressFederal Bureau of Investigations: Beltway SnipersiNews: Washington Beltway SnipersWUSA9: ATF Investigator

TRIGGER WARNING for non-fatal violence against a child at 33:00 to 35:00 or so. From February of 2002 and until October of that year, two men tore across America on a reckless and seemingly motivation-less crime spree resulting in the murder of over a dozen people and leaving nearly as many critically wounded.
Randy describes his friendship -- and subsequent falling out -- with Lee Boyd Malvo, one of the two notorious "Beltway Snipers" who terrorized Washington DC for three weeks in 2002.
#043 - For three weeks in October 2002, the areas of Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia were terrorized by a series of coordinated shootings. Innocent people were being gunned down at gas stations, bus stops, and while just walking down the street. At the end of the rampage, 17 people would be murdered and 10 people would be seriously injured. The killers became known in the media as the D.C. Snipers, and their attacks would forever be remembered as the Beltway Sniper Attacks.Support My Work:If you enjoy my podcast and would like to get early access to new episodes, have access to exclusive bonus content, or just want to support what I'm doing, please visit our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/forensictalesOther ways you can support the show are telling your family and friends about it and leaving a rating with a review.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/forensictales)

Peter Vronsky documents the psychological, investigative, and cultural aspects of serial murder, beginning with its first recorded instance in Ancient Rome through fifteenth-century France on to such notorious contemporary cases as cannibal/necrophile Ed Kemper, the BTK killer, Henry Lee Lucas, Monte Ralph Rissell, Jerry Brudos, Richard Ramirez, “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and the emergence of what he classifies as the “serial rampage killer” such as Andrew Cunanan, who murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace.Vronsky not only offers sound theories on what makes a serial killer but also makes concrete suggestions on how to survive an encounter with one—from recognizing verbal warning signs to physical confrontational resistance. Exhaustively researched with transcripts of interviews with killers, and featuring up-to-date information on the apprehension and conviction of the Green River killer and the Beltway Snipers, Vronsky’s one-of-a-kind book covers every conceivable aspect of an endlessly riveting true crime phenomenon. We interview David Reichenbaugh and discuss his book. October 2, 2002. A bullet pierced the window of a crafts store in Maryland, just missing the cashier. But other bullets hit their targets. In Pursuit follows the hunt for the Beltway snipers during the twenty-three-day shooting spree that terrorized Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. David Reichenbaugh—the criminal intelligence operations commander for the Maryland State Police, and commanding officer at the scene during the snipers’ capture in Myersville, Maryland—played a major role in the investigation from the first day of the killing spree through its final act, as the snipers were cornered in a rest area in western Maryland. He is one of very few people who know the complete details of the investigation and capture of the snipers. Working against the clock with few clues and little evidence, hundreds of investigators from federal, state, county, and city law enforcement agencies struggled to find answers to the questions: Who were the killers? Was their choice of victims random? And most of all, Why did they kill? When the killers began leaving notes to taunt the police, investigators were finally able to begin assembling a picture, piercing the fog of uncertainty and terror that filled the region. We also highlight two books. First Gary Allan Ruse's Murder in Deer Park Join President Grover Cleveland and his young bride as their resort honeymoon is interrupted by murder and intrigue, forcing the appealing couple to become detectives and solve the crime! The year is 1886 and Grover Cleveland, 22nd President of the United States, has at age 49 taken a bride, the lovely 21 year old Frances Folsom. Married in the White House itself they have raced by swift carriage, with meddlesome reporters trailing their every move, to take a private train to the isolated Victorian mountain resort in Deer Park, Maryland, where they hope to share a wonderful honeymoon. But, unbeknownst to them, besides the annoying presence of the press, there are dastardly schemes afoot and the suspicious death of one of the reporters complicates things for the happy couple, forcing them to investigate the mystery with the help of the police and others guarding them.Written by Gary Alan Ruse, author of 5 published novels ("Houndstooth" and "A Game of Titans," published in hardcover by Prentice-Hall, "The Gods of Cerus Major," published in hardcover by Doubleday, and "Morlac: The Quest of the Green Magician" and "Death Hunt on a Dying Planet," paperback originals by NAL/Signet Books) and numerous stories in magazines and anthologies, as well as hundreds of newspaper stories for Miami's Community Newspapers and the old Miami News.Second Staging is Murder by Grace Topping- Laura Bishop just nabbed her first decorating commission—staging for sale a 19th-century mansion that hasn’t been updated for decades. But when a body falls from a laundry chute and lands at Laura’s feet, replacing flowered wallpaper becomes the least of her duties. To clear her young assistant of the murder and save her fledgling business, Laura’s determined to find the killer. Turns out it’s not as easy as renovating a manor home, especially with two handsome men complicating her mission: the police detective assigned to the case and the real estate agent trying to save the manse from foreclosure. Worse still, the meddling of a horoscope-guided friend, a determined grandmother, and the local funeral director could get them all killed before Laura props the first pillow.

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we look at the mass killings committed by (and the conspiracy theories about) the two people known as the Beltway Snipers in Washington DC. The year was 2002, and the nation was still reeling from the horrors of 9/11 when two men named John Muhammad (41) and Lee Malvo (17) started a reign of terror in the DC area, killing 17 people out of the back of their 1990 Chevrolet Caprice. Though many people think they were just serving up a bowl full of crazy, others think it was a false flag event, and you know what, even William Shatner gets involved! So, to get to the Beltway Sniper killings, it’s important to start with the killers themselves. John Muhamad (formerly John Williams) was an army veteran with high marksman skills. He’d been married a couple times and once out of the army, ended up getting a divorce. His wife filed a restraining order based on his threats, and he went a little nutso and kidnapped their shared children. He ran to Antiqua, like you do, and he met the young Lee Malvo. Malvo was born in Jamaica and spent some years in the Caribbean with various family members. Eventually, he came to the US illegally, and after getting detained and set free, he and his mom lived in a homeless shelter where Muhammed eventually moved as well. The two Beltway Snipers became fast friends, forming a father-son bond and training for what became their killing spree. Their killings didn’t start in DC, though. They started in Washington state and cut a path of death across the nation, from Arizona to Louisiana before they got to the DC area. Once there, they started to randomly kill people who were targets of opportunity, typically people coming in or out of a store or people at a gas station. The entire area was freaked out and didn’t even want to be on the streets (Dave included—he was there researching!). Eventually, they slipped up by taunting the cops on their tip line and gave them a clue that led to their identities being revealed. From there, it was a matter of time before the cops cornered them. But there is also where the conspiracy theorists take hold. When they were arrested, some people think there was a trigger word in a hypnotic suggestion to bring the two killers in. There are connections between the head investigator and Muhammad, and the ex-wife worked for the government. So, were the Beltway Snipers two sick puppies who got off on murder and wanted revenge for a wife who left, or were they part of a false flag event that led them across the nation killing people? Listen, laugh, learn. Conspiracy Theory Break Down: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=27984 One Word--Shatner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pQ0ZR5Jkuc

The Beltway Snipers. Washington, D.C. October, 2002. Fear grips the beltway as random people are shot dead in public by a hidden shooter. Parking lots and gas stations were no longer safe. A single gunshot would be heard and then someone would fall. Five were shot dead on October 3rd alone. The threat caused people to look around and to be on guard. Men, women, and even kids were targets for whoever was behind the attacks. For more than 20 days the attacks and even taunts from the killer continued until a call from a man alerted authorities to the location of the two responsible for the crimes. But the Beltway attacks were not the whole story. The pair had shot others before October and the reason behind the spree killings seemed to be rage. John Allen Muhammad and his teenage co-conspirator Lee Boyd Malvo wanted to terrorize the public and bring the system down. For Muhammad, losing his children in a custody battle with his ex-wife may have been the last straw.

The vastly underreported phenomenon of African-American serial killers is discussed at length in this two part series. Today's murderers: the Cleveland Strangler, the Grim Sleeper (including the other four serial killers operating in South Los Angeles at the time), and the Beltway Snipers.
Still more serial killers. Arnie's guests Louie Saunders, Ellen Haeg and Molly Willbanks are back to talk about serial killers yet again. This time we talk about the Beltway Snipers, the ten year old killer Mary Bell, the BTK Killer and get the latest updates on the Zodiac.
