Have you ever tried to build a new habit? Ever find yourself reaching for your phone even when it's not in your pocket? Ever thought about whether free will actually exists? Yeah, that last one got deep, but that's just how we roll here at This Was A Thing. Because this week, we're talking all about a man who devoted his life to studying whether or not humans have a say in how they behave. His conclusion? We're all pretty much rats pressing levers. Daniel teaches Ray and Rob about B.F. Skinner, the psychologist, writer, and inventor whose ideas about free will and shaping behaviors made him famous and infamous; how Skinner bucked the trend of Pavlov and Freud to try to take a quantitative and objective approach to sudying human behavior; Skinner's belief that pigeons could be the next big thing in missile technology; why Skinner's book Beyond Freedom and Dignity earned him a spot on Noam Chomsky's sh*& list; the real origin story of Splinter from TMNT; and how B.F. Skinner continues to influence everything from modern psychology to teaching technologies. If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. I'm thrilled to be joined by none other than Dr. Tim Vollmer. In this podcast, we talk about a wide variety of research and practice topics, as well as some funny stories from his long and prolific career. Specifically, talk about how his dog ate his copy of Strategies and Tactics, how he and his colleagues analyzed 2 and 3-point shot patterns in basketball games, his line of research that examined The Good Behavior Game, Behavior Analysis and the game of Poker, and his take on why he and his students have such an affinity for one another.  That's not all. We probably spent the most amount of time discussing the topic of ignoring in the context of Behavioral Intervention Plans, and its potential problems.  I really hope you stick around until the end of the podcast, because we close the show in a slightly different format. Instead of asking Tim my normal closing question (advice for the newly minted), I ask him to share his thoughts on the future direction of Behavior Analysis, including both risks and opportunities. Here are the links to the resources we mentioned: Beyond Freedom and Dignity (note: Amazon Associates Link). Vollmer and Bourret (2013). An application of the Matching Law to evaluate two and three-point shots by college basketball players.  Football Behavior (BA-driven sports analytics from Brett Yarris). Chris Bosh on the Tim Ferriss show (wherein Chris discusses the evolution 3-point shooting strategy in the NBA). Strategies and Tactics for Behavioral Research and Practice, 4th edition (note: Amazon Associates Link). (Lloveras et al., 2023). Recommendations Regarding Use of the Term “Ignore” in Applied Behavior Analysis. Good Behavior Game episode with Dr. Jeanne Donaldson. Lambert et al., (2006). Effects of response cards on disruptive behavior and academic responding during math lessons by fourth-grade urban students. (this is the paper I mentioned from Bill Heward's research group, and I mistakenly noted that it was published in 1996, when in fact it was published in 2006).  Follow Tim's lab on Instagram! This podcast is brought to you by: HRIC Recruiting. Barb Voss has been placing BCBAs in permanent positions throughout the US for just about a decade, and has been in the business more generally for 30 years. When you work with HRIC, you work directly with Barb, thereby accessing highly personalized service. The behaviorism of B.F. Skinner took the psychology world by storm.  His 1971 book "Beyond Freedom and Dignity" was hailed as the most important psychological publication of the 20th century.  And this was from someone who denied mind and free will. It was an attempt to dignify psychology as a hard science, based on experiments and what can be observed, rather than what people think or feel, a direct contradiction to the root meaning of word psychology - "a study of mind."  He claimed that reason, values, concepts,  judgment, and purpose simply do not exist.  To him, all actions are based on conditioning. Hegel laid the groundwork for the unconscious, calling it soul, and saying it is from what consciousness itself comes.  Famed psychologists Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung built on this with their brilliant conceptions - the reality of the unconscious mind on Freud's part and the collective unconscious from Jung.  This episode discusses all this as well as Novak's personal interactions with Skinnerism in the university setting of the early 1970s. Support the show

Jennelle Gordon touches on turning past traumas into triumphs, detailing her life today after enduring a decade of human sex trafficking. Exploited by predators in her early adult life at just 19, Jennelle was trapped in a system with no end in sight. Upon facing certain death, she faked her own death to finally escape her traffickers. Jennelle had a choice: fall to victimhood and not live a full life due to lack of education and a degree...or bring a positive message to women everywhere as well as help those who have also escaped human sex trafficking. Jennelle is now the founder of Beyond Freedom, survivor-run nonprofit dedicated to the education of the community, empowering survivors with holistic healing modalities and the enlightenment of survivors through education. She has also launched The “O” Factors , a holistic system of spiritual and sensual empowerment whereby she merges all her passions and teachings into one powerful modality, which was motivated in part by Jennelle's mentor, Tony Robbins! Jennelle Gordon speaks about leaving her traumatic past behind for a brighter future. Having been the product of rape and then the system, her fate would have been sealed by statistics to either death or a life of addiction. But rather than sit in the passenger seat of her own life and live in compliance with societal programming, she took the wheel and created her own destiny. Born from violence to a troubled single mother in Pittsburgh, she quickly became a ward of the state and placed in a foster home of religious extremists. Her new family brought her on a missionary trip to Thailand where she was kept from receiving a proper education or medical treatment for her most critical formative years. They continued neglecting her health long after their return to America, and as she grew they would also keep her in isolation and secluded from the outside world in an effort to control her body and mind. However, her strength of self overcame their attempts at brainwashing and she left home on her eighteenth birthday. Unfortunately, at a period of extreme vulnerability, she attracted predators who would sexually exploit her over the course of a decade through coercion and manipulation. She fell into the same cycle of victimization from her childhood and finally broke free when she faked her death in order to escape certain death. It was then that she would return to Thailand and study tantra; fully liberating her body, mind, and spirit. Through her spiritual studies and yogic practices, she healed herself holistically from unresolved trauma and developed Dance Om; an integrative form of dance therapy designed to relinquish women from societal constraints on their sexuality and sense of self. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/intuitive-intelligence/message

Please welcome Jennelle Gordon to the BINGEnetworks Gratitude UnFiltered sponsored by Joy’s Organics CBD products (https://joy-organics.sjv.io/gratitudeunfiltered). In 2002 Jennelle Gordon was honorably discharged from the United States Army. This medical discharge is what fueled her yoga journey. Jennelle first met Dharma Mittra in 2011, at the time not realizing how influential this man was in bringing traditional hatha yoga to the west, she reluctantly began her first yoga training. It was not until many years later she learned what a privilege it was to learn from this guru. She received her 200 Yoga Alliance hours certification and went on to do several more internships after her initial training with Dharma. Working with at risk intercity men in the Dallas Fort Worth area was her main focus, in implementing her new found yoga techniques. When Jennelle met Sumit, she knew instantly this style of yoga was for her. A Bikram yoga practitioner for a decade this set the foundation for all the other trainings she would receive in the future. After learning that Sumit was Bikram’s nephew, a deeper desire to learn and grow in her yoga path was fostered. Jennelle received her second 200 hours Yoga Alliance certification in 2011 as well. Jennelle taught all over the United States, as Sumits Yoga and studios began to multiply. Today she is proud to call Sumit a dear friend and is thankful for his guidance along her way. Jennelle graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in 2011, as a holistic health coach and nutritionist. After nearly ten years of irritable bowel syndrome she healed herself with conscious food choices and an integrative holistic approach. Her speciality is reversing gastrointestinal issues, as well as implementing detoxification. She then did an internship with an Ayurvedic doctor in Thailand, learning a more east meet west approach, which is her health philosophy with her clients. Since then Jennelle has completed three extended business programs from the school, helping her to further understand the health and wellness market. In 2013 Jennelle landed at Agama Yoga, a traditional Tantric hatha yoga school, on an island in Thailand. After struggling to truly attain liberation from her sex traffickers and the exotic dance industry of which she was held captive to for nearly ten years, this was the most effective healing remedy. It also became a safe haven as she truly feared one of her traffickers and this safe experience allowed her to heal and began to integrate back into herself and her body. Jennelle received her 400 hours of Tantra Yoga Training from Agama school recognized by the Yoga Alliance Association. Jennelle spent a year on the island, learning, student teaching under her mentors and then finally teaching Tantra on the island and around Southeast Asia. In 2017 Jennelle made history by founding the first ever sex trafficking awareness club at Orange Coast College, called Beyond Freedom. She now has turned this club into a non profit geared to education, empowering and enlightening her campus, community and finally funding survivors of sex trafficking education and business expenses. In 2018, Jennelle received her Reiki training certificate this energy healing modality has been apart of other aspects of her work for years. Finally adding this certification to her arsenal of trainings allows her to offer deeper energy work to her clients. In 2018 Jennelle graduated with numerous honors, receiving her associates degree in Liberal Arts from Orange Coast Community College. In 2018 Jennelle won several first place titles on the speech and debate team at Orange Coast College. Her advocacy speaking against sex trafficking has landed her numerous speaking engagements and has now become her passion in serving others. In 2019 Jennelle formed Beyond Freedom Non Profit and is currently finishing her Bachelors degree in Communications Studies at California State Fullerton. She is writing her first book on and is preparing for her first Ted Talk in 2020. I am your host, Joshua T Berglan! Renowned behavioral psychologist BF Skinner codified much of the science behind positive reinforcement-based animal training, and is a hero to many dog trainers. But for over half a century, his reputation has been tarnished by rumors that his daughter went crazy and killed herself because he raised her in a box. Annie interviews said daughter, Deborah Buzan, who is alive and sane. She was in fact raised in a box... sort of. Buzan discussed the "Air Crib," aka the "Baby Box," and growing up with a genius father who was devoted to engineering ways to make life easier and happier for his wife and daughters. She is a woman in her seventies. The story of her babyhood has become something of an urban legend. The misunderstandings about her youth I think actually dovetail with a lot of misunderstandings about dog training. Deborah Buzan is an artist who lives in England and we spoke via Skype, and, unfortunately, we didn’t have a great connection. So, this recording isn’t wonderful but I did my best to clean it up. But even if it is not the most easy listening I hope you’ll make it through this episode because we had a really interesting conversation. She is the daughter of B.F. Skinner and if you’ve listened to this podcast before, you’ve probably heard me talk about Skinner. He is one of my heroes and a hero to many good dog trainers out there. Skinner, who sadly passed away in the early 1990s, is considered to be one of the founders of the science of behavior. He codified a lot of what we know about the science and philosophy of behaviorism. If you’re not familiar with Skinner, I suggest going out and getting all of his books, or at least one of them. About Behaviorism a good one to start with, or Beyond Freedom and Dignity. He also wrote a novel called Walden Two which is kind of about how you could create a utopia creating positive reinforcement. Anyway, I thought the best way to introduce Deborah would be with this clip of her father discussing some of the misunderstandings about how she was raised. “I’d like to correct some rumors that go around. I am sure that some of you have heard them. A distinguished psychiatrist whose name you all know, I won’t mention it, told a distinguished person whose name you also would know, that the child that we raised in the so called box, the air crib, became psychotic. I wrote to him that we’ve heard this before and I’ve often heard this, would you mind telling me where you heard this rumor? Our daughter is very intelligent and talented, married, her husband teaches international studies at the Univ. Of Warwick, they live in London. My daughter is an artist, she does large color etching and sells all she can produce and so on. I don’t see any ill effects of the air crib on her. Well, he sent me a very apologetic letter, I must say that. But he didn’t tell me where he heard it." Full Transcript available at SchoolfortheDogs.com/Podcasts

February 17, 2016 at the Boston Athenæum. In this talk, Adam Rothman will share excerpts from Beyond Freedom’s Reach, the true story of one woman’s quest to rescue her children from bondage. In the gripping, meticulously researched account, Adam Rothman lays bare the mayhem of emancipation during and after the Civil War. After Union forces captured New Orleans in 1862, the slave-owning De Harts fled to Havana, taking Rose Herera’s three children with them. When Mary De Hart returned to New Orleans in 1865, she was surprised to find herself taken into custody as a kidnapper. As Rothman will share, the case of Rose Herera’s abducted children reveals to the reader the prospects and limits of justice that existed during Reconstruction. In his book and during the talk, Rothman will offer a poignant reflection on the tangled politics of slavery and the hazards that were faced by so many Americans on the hard road to freedom.

Why should somebody who is interested in education be interested in behaviourism? Because it's had a huge impact on educational theory and practice over the past more than 100 years. When I started reading books on education, the I was astounded at the frequency with which behaviourist arguments were put forward to support ideas. I felt like I could hardly budge without bumping into another reference to it. And it's no surprise - behaviourist educationalists include figures such as Edward Thorndike, sometimes referred to as "the father of educational psychology". The first book I read about educational psychology said that there were three chief paradigms of teaching, one of which was "behavioural". Understanding behaviourism helped me to better understand what these books were talking about, and to know when they didn't know what they were talking about. Because it says some pretty crazy stuff, which is nonetheless hard to refute. Burrhus Frederic Skinner, the behaviourist who made the greatest contribution to the field, had some pretty scary ideas. He denied the existence of choice, will, or freedom. He considered dignity to be an empty and worthless idea. (Hence the title of one of his books, Beyond Freedom and Dignity.) He thought that people could be perfectly controlled with the right external conditioning, and he even hoped that the future would be this way, as expounded in his apparently utopian novel Walden Two. The non-existence or at least unimportance of internal states (thoughts, emotions) is at the very core of the philosophy of behaviourism. Outraged yet? And yet the theory has a lot of evidence going for it. Because, a lot of the time, it works. Behaviourist principles have proven very effective in a range of situations and applications. Their greatest successes have been in animal training, but they've also been effective in various human domains, including making games and gambling machines more addictive. (Hooray?) There have also been some applications in sports coaching (more on this in another of Karen Pryor's books, Reaching the Animal Mind). Don't Shoot the Dog! serves as an introduction to behaviourism. Karen Pryor takes us through both the basic theory and applications in behaviour modification. She uses a combination of examples from both animal and human subjects in everyday situations. Want your dog to stop barking all night? Need your roommate to start doing the laundry for once? Can't wait to teach your cat to give you a high-five? Karen Pryor tackles all these tricky situations and more. Behaviourism claims to be a complete model of learning and behaviour - a very ambitious claim indeed. How does it do on this score? Without giving the game away too much, let's just say that the results are mixed. In some situations, behaviourist approaches and ideas work incredibly well. In certain cases, however, particularly to do with motivation, it is clear that it hasn't got all the answers. The fact that it's partially true and partially false makes it all the more intriguing - why does it sometimes work, but sometimes not? This is a question that will take a lot longer than one episode to answer, but it is worth thinking on. Even if you're not behaviourism's biggest fan, or you don't think you'll be using it much, it is an important thing to have a grasp of to provide context for other theories and ideas. It's like Newtonian physics, which does a good job prior to the arrival of other theories (relativity theory and quantum mechanics), and we can then ask why Newtonian physics works so well in most situations even though it's "wrong" as it has been superseded by other theories. Enjoy the episode.

Jennelle Gordon is an inspiration for women as a speaker and educator. She studied tantra and yoga extensively with masters in Thailand after leaving her traumatic past behind for a brighter future. Having been the product of rape and then the system, her fate would have been sealed by statistics to either death or a life of addiction. But rather than sit in the passenger seat of her own life and live in compliance with societal programming, she took the wheel and created her own destiny. Beyond Freedom International is a nonprofit in Orange County founded by Jennelle. Beyond Freedom's mission focuses on bringing awareness, providing aid to survivors, and creating practical solutions to ending sex trafficking. Jennelle shares her experiences and steps to freedom with other women who were victims. She also shares her knowledge with communities so they can be a part of the solution. Jennelle's book The 8 Faces of Freedom can help change lives of these victims. She will bring light to how victims are seduced and manipulated into the industry. This book will share Jennelle's true inspirational story about how she went from being sold into sex trafficking to TEDx talk speaker with the help of Tony Robbins. Today she empowers women to heal and grow from the trauma. She is an entrepreneur, author and a role model to women.
