In Week 3 of Discipleship 103 we continued our series on "How To Study The Bible" by learning about the "The Interpretive Journey," a 4-step process to biblical interpretation including: 1) Grasp The Text In Their Town; 2) Measure The Width of the River To Cross; 3) Cross The Principlizing Bridge; 4) Apply The Text In Our Town. After this, in preparation for studying the "Fruit of the Spirit," we placed the class in four groups and challenged them to study specific verses in Galatians and use the various resources (commentaries, bible handbooks, etc) to discover the CONTEXT of the verses. Finally, we provided an overview of the epistle of Galatians to help our students understand the immediate context of the discussion of "Fruits of the Spirit," in light of the larger context of Paul's writing to the Galatians. NOTE: From the 36:54 - 1:02:27 mark we are in breakout rooms so there is no recording during that time. This series is designed to help Christian disciples learn how to read and study the bible in its proper historical, cultural, geographical, linguistic and literary context. Come Follow Me New Testament Bible Galatians In Paul's most shocking epistle, he tells James, Peter, John, and the twelve apostles to cut off their private parts. He then says that he does not care who James, Peter, and John are. Next, he excoriates Peter in front of the whole congregation in Antioch for being a hypocrite. On the positive side, Paul continues to teach the death, resurrection, and atonement of Jesus Christ. He also continues his assault on the false forms of Christianity that we today call "protestantism" and "evangelicalism." Come increase your testimony of Jesus Christ through the expository preaching of Dr. D. Todd Harrison- A Witness of Jesus Christ. The Bible. It's weird. It's hard. It's confusing. Many people try to claim they have an understanding or interpretation that will make your life better. I've have a complicated relationship with it myself, and over the last ten years I've haven't been able to engage with it at all. About 6 months ago I started to read it. I started to listen to what's behind the words. I'm starting a new series call Secrets of the Bible. No I'm not going to teach you how to decode the bible so you know exactly when Jesus is coming back or some other weird stuff. I want to share my heart in what I read. So I invite you to listen, like really listen and see if there is something inspired within you from these ancient texts. Please understand I'm not trying to "teach" anything. Galatians will rock your world. Pastor Nathaniel Wall leads our conversation today, dispelling any myth that your good performance before God will get you to Heaven. And the key word today isn't "performance," isn't "good deeds," and isn't even "be nice." The word is FREEDOM! Can you say, "Awesome!"

Catechism Lesson #10 - The Virtues and Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Today we continue our lessons about the teachings of the Catholic Church. In our last lesson we talked about the Holy Spirit and the grace that we receive from prayer, the Sacraments, and from the Holy Eucharist. Today, we're going to talk about the Virtues and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. We all have problems or challenges that we have to deal with. We may have issues with school, homework, friends, family, and many other things in this world. The Holy Spirit is there to give you strength and to help you carry your cross. Here are the questions that I would like you to think about during this lesson. 1. Who sends the Holy Spirit into our hearts? 2. What does He fill us with? 3. How does He teach us to love the Father? 4. How does the Holy Spirit change us? 5. What do we have to be willing to do in order for Him to be able to change you? The Catholic Church leaders put together all the books of the Old Testament and the New Testament around 300 a.d.. They were guided by the Holy Spirit to choose all the books and only the books that make up the Holy Bible. Some people actually think the Bible fell from the sky. It was actually the Catholic Church, with the help of the Holy Spirit, that gave us the Holy Bible. First Reading: Romans chapter 8: 14-17. In our last lesson, I told you that one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit was wind or the Breath of God. God has breathed his life into each one of us to make us his children. I think it's great to be one of God's children. That means that his home in heaven is now open to be our home. Thankfully, we get to enjoy many of the great things here on Earth during our life. There are many beautiful and wonderful things in this life. There are also things that give us hurt and heartache. Those things that are hard for us to deal with are called our crosses. Just like Jesus had to carry that very heavy cross in Jerusalem, you and I have to carry our own crosses every day. I know, your crosses can be very heavy to carry at times. The holy spirit is right there to help you deal with your cross and to help you carry your cross. If you carry your cross and are having a hard time with one of your crosses, take a minute to pray to the Holy Spirit for some extra strength and more faith. He will give you extra strength. When Jesus carried his cross, it was the most beautiful act of love anyone could ever do for you or me. We can also carry our crosses with love for those in our life. The powers of the Holy Spirit will make your soul stronger. They are like muscles in your soul. The main three powers that we get from the Holy Spirit are faith, hope, and charity. These are called the Three Virtues. God also gave us seven special gifts that we call the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts are indeed very special. We were given the three virtues and the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit when we were baptized. That's also when we received sanctifying Grace. Faith is the virtue that we are given that allows us to believe the word of God and everything that he has revealed to us directly, through scripture, and through the Church. Hope is the second virtue. Hope simply means that you can always trust God to care for you and all your needs. Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed, but hope is always with you. You just have to remember to call on it to help you. Please always keep hope. Charity is the third virtue. Charity is the love of God that you give from your heart to another person, especially when they really need your help. The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit will help you live a better life, and a more holy life. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Continuing from last week, we dive further into this issue of how to think about who's in and who's out. And this week, we see Paul going ballistic on his church that didn't go in the direction he wanted. How do we modern Christians make any sense of this book of the Bible?

This is our third episode in an arc on Spiritual Development. We look closer at Stages II and III of M. Scott Peck's Stages of Faith, and how we can navigate tensions to this journey moving towards union with God.  It's important to evaluate what part of Christianity we try to protect out of fear. Our goal: "Life in the Spirit" (see Romans 8) meaning to move into union with God.  Our guest music today is: Feel Your Love, by Still Spoken You can find it on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/3wWxnAjCikcl6Ug9Fymr09 Reminder of the M. Scott Peck's Stages of Faith: Stage I: Chaotic, Antisocial Stage II: Formal, Institutional, Fundamental Stage III: Skeptic, Individual, Questioner Stage IV: Mystic, Communal Part of the dark side of stage 2 is high boundaries, but because of fear, there's no openness to tension. Sermon on the Mount reference re: murder, adultery and divorce: Matthew 5:21 Jesus is moving the focus of spirituality out of the rules into the center of our heart, where we need God to be transformed. If faith is not marked with compassion, and is not moving you towards openness in God, then it'll become religious and legalistic. The point of healthy boundaries is to lead you into LIFE. Recommended podcast on Jewish & Hebrew culture: "Stuff Jews Should Know." Examples of Stage II to Stage III transitions in the Bible: -Galatians 6: Paul reframing the importance of circumcision vs. being transformed into a new creation through Jesus Christ. -Peter having a vision about allowing "unclean" foods to be eaten. (Acts 10:9-16) -Jesus breaking sabbath laws with healing, eating grain, etc. This transition is usually a result of suffering. These "rules" or the way that God and the world make sense based on religion until suffering happens in life, and the rules stop making sense. Matthew 12:1 A Discussion about the Sabbath 12 At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them. 2 But some Pharisees saw them do it and protested, “Look, your disciples are breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.” 3 Jesus said to them, “Haven't you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. 5 And haven't you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath? 6 I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple! 7 But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.'[a] 8 For the Son of Man[b] is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” Development is a process of maturing over time, through life stages. We can get stuck in different development stages, and never move past them. From the therapeutic perspective: Looking at the amygdala + limbic system, the amygdala triggers "fight or flight" in our reactions. Even though in our current culture, our lives are rarely threatened day to day, we'll continue to experience life day to day as "threatening." "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." Viktor E. This calm Christian meditation with Biblical Affirmations is from the Free Christian Guided Meditations Library at https://onlinediscipleshipforwomen.com/christian-guided-meditation/ and will guide you through the journey of realizing how special and precious you are to God. You need to know that you are powerful, valuable, special, chosen, and unique on purpose. You are loved and accepted. Your life matters. Your ideas count. You are perfect just the way you are. All affirmations are original. 1. You Are A Child Of God. Bible: Galatians 3:26 says “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith” Think about this for a moment. How precious you are to God, your Heavenly Father. He loves you so much that He made you new through Jesus, so you can have a life of joy, freedom, and honor. 2. You Are A Princess. Bible: Psalm 136:26 says “Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.‘ God's love for you endures forever. You are loved, forever. Romans 15:7 says “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you” Jesus accepted you. You are accepted. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says “...you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” You are justified. You are sanctified. You are a daughter of the King, our Sovereign God. Think about how significant it is to know that your sin and your faults have all been washed away. You are new. You are sanctified. How do you feel knowing that you are a daughter of the King? You are a Princess. Royalty. King's heir. Your inheritance is God's Kingdom. Nothing can take away your confidence in this truth: you are a Princess. Nothing can separate you from the everlasting love of God. You are loved. You are accepted. You are worthy. You are a child of God. 3. You Are Fearfully And Wonderfully Made. Bible: Psalm 139:14 says “I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful‘ Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus” You are wonderful. You are made in the image of God Himself. Everything about you He created. Every aspect of you is a masterpiece. You are whole. You are God's perfect creation. Think about how special you are to God. How perfectly He made you. There's no one like you. You are one of a kind. A masterpiece. You are perfect. 4. You Are God's Glory On Display. Bible: John 13:31-32 says “... Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.” Think about how much God is pleased with you. Your life is for His glory and honor. God is glorified because of who you are. 5. You Are Worthy. Bible: Galatians 2:20 says “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Think about how worthy you are that now Christ Himself lives in you. There's no need to feel guilt, shame, self-condemnation, or self-hatred. You are a new creation in Christ. You are blameless. You are pure. All your debt has been paid by Jesus. You are holy. 6. You Are Valuable. Bible: Luke 12:7 says “Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not - you are of more value than many sparrows.” Think about how much God must appreciate and value you to count all your hair. This message shows how God dedicates His undivided personal attention to you. He takes time to learn every little detail about you. You are that valuable to God. Romans 8:2 says “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Think about how sin is no longer your master. The Holy Spirit who lives in you after you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior gives you all the power you need to declare complete freedom from sin. You are free. Matthew 5:16 says “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.“ Think about how you can shine more light in the world. You are light. 7. You Are Special And Chosen. Bible: Genesis 2:7 says “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” 1 Thessalonians 1:4 says “For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you” 1 Peter 2:9 says “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Think about how much God wanted you that He made you so unique. God created you out of nothingness - to be. You are that special. God chose you. He has a purpose for you. He made you so precious. He made you His child, a Princess, with a royal privilege of having a purpose. You matter. You make a difference. You are important. 8. You Are A Difference-Maker. Bible: Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Think about the purpose of your life, your mission here, your ministry in the community, your impact on people, and what positive difference you make. You make a difference. The world is a better place because of you. You are here for a good reason. God has a mission for you. 9. You Are Gifted. Bible: Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Think about the special gift of eternal life you received from God. Your life will go on and on. You will be forever. Allow yourself to experience gratitude right now. 10. You Are Creative. Bible: Exodus 35:31 says “and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills” Think about your special skills, talents, and abilities. Your ideas are very creative. Your ideas are great. Your ideas matter. You have wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to make an impact. Your ideas are effective. Your ideas are powerful. 11. You Are Wise. Bible: Isaiah 11:2 says “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord.” Think about the wisdom of God available to you at all times. You have good discernment. The Holy Spirit in you gives you wisdom. In any situation, you just ask, and you shall receive wisdom from your counsel who is God Himself. All-knowing. With infinite intelligence. Romans 5:3-5 says “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance - character, and character - hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Think about how much pain you're persevered through in life. That perseverance produced your character. Your character is what gives hope to others around you. When people see what you've been through and whom you've become, the child of God, His glory, it gives them hope. 12. You Are Powerful. Bible: Acts 1:8 says “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.“ Think about the power you have through Christ. Never doubt yourself. You want to go to the best school to study for your dream career? You can. You want to be a CEO on a global enterprise? You can. You want to speak in front of thousands of people with your special message? You can. You want to learn new skills? You can. You want to be kind and patient? You can. You want to be loving and compassionate? You an. 13. You Are Strong And Courageous. Bible: Joshua 1:9 says “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Think about this truth about you. God commands you to be courageous. In every situation, you can declare this truth: God will be with you wherever you go. You are strong and courageous in Christ. 14. You Are Blessed. Bible: Psalm 32:1 says “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” | Think about the new identity you have in Christ. Your debt is paid. Your sin is forgiven. You are new, redeemed, holy, and God calls you blessed. Ephesians 1:3 says “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Think about being consistently called “blessed” throughout the Bible. Count your blessings. Make it a habit to intentionally feel blessed daily. Start a ‘gratitude journal“ and write just a few things there regularly. The things you consider blessings, like health, clean drinking water, plenty of food, close friendships, and even this device you're listening the mediation on right now. You have so many blessings. Count them. Don't let the day go by without pausing to realize how blessed you are. The biggest blessing of all is your eternal life with Jesus in Heaven. What a blessing to have such certainty about your future. You never have to wonder. You never have to guess. You know for sure about your future. 15. You Are Loved. Bible: John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Think about how loved you are that God sent Jesus to redeem you from any sin, fault, debt, and to set you free. You are loved. Unconditionally. Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Think about God's unconditional love toward you. He doesn't require you to change. He asks you: come as you are. He sent Christ to show His love for you, with no conditions. God's love is yours. Nothing you need to do to deserve this love, to earn it, to win it. You are loved already. Just the way you are. Right now. You are fully loved already by your Heavenly Father, forever, for eternity.    All affirmations are original from https://onlinediscipleshipforwomen.com/god

About this episode Out in theaters right now is Fifty Shades Darker, the second film based on Fifty Shades series. These novels have spurred a lot of conversation and questions about erotica. And we’re going to address that topic head-on. 1. Why do you think so many wives have been drawn to erotic romance stories? What about this genre appeals to them? 2. I've had wives tell me that reading these novels awakened their sexual desire. What’s wrong with that? Isn't that ultimately good for the sexual intimacy in their marriage? 3. Some say that these erotic stories are no different from porn, and others say they’re no different from romance novels. What do you think about either or both of those charges? How are they the same or different? 4. Let’s get practical: What is okay and what’s not okay in the world of BDSM? 5. What are your own greatest concerns about the Fifty Shades phenomenon? From the Bible Galatians 5:22-23: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." Colossians 3:19: "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them." 1 Corinthians 10:23: "'Everything is permissible,' but not everything is helpful.  'Everything is permissible,' but not everything builds up."
