If you've worked in agriculture for long enough, you've probably heard "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" or "that's the way we've always done it". Chances are the individuals expressing those kinds of sentiments are probably not the most open-minded. They probably don't collaborate or share information with other growers very much because they might think they "know-it-all". Growers that succeed or are able to continue farming over the next couple of decades will be those of the "learn-it-all" mindset. They will be radically open-minded and willing to collaborate with their peers. Zac Riccardi of BioSafe Systems has spent much of the last decade collaborating with growers of many different crops and helping those he works with apply the knowledge he's gained through being open-minded about crop production. Zac joined the #LeadersTalkCrops series of CropTalk podcast to share his thoughts on the reasons why radical open-mindedness and collaboration in the agriculture industry is necessary. Until next time, #startcleanstayclean
What is "pesticide stewardship"? How is it used to prevent "pesticide resistance" and achieve other IPM goals? What are the different kinds of pesticide resistance? How does this fit into the IPM paradigm? What are some suggested practices and general approaches to pest management that consider pesticide stewardship? Those are just some of the questions that arose organically when Robert & Charlie decided to hit record on a Zoom call with CropWalk advisor and R&D entomologist at BioSafe Systems, Gretchen V. Pettis, PhD. What are "modes of action" and "target sites" and what does it mean to rotate between them when applying #pesticides? When you do suggest chemical control options, can you tell us about the 3-tiered approach (moderation, saturation, multiple attack)? Are #biopesticides susceptible to resistance? What's up with the 2021 #cicada emergence on the east coast? #LetsTalkCrops ...Let's talk #PesticideResistance and the informed, intentional, and reserved use of pesticides... in #agriculture and beyond. There are so many insightful nuggets in this #podcast. Stream or download via the link in the comments and on https://www.croptalkmedia.com/listen

A: You can use splenda - recipes online - ball blue book, etc Q:what is the difference between bread flour and all-purpose flour? A:Bread flour has a higher gluten content - gluten is the protein in wheat that makes it chewy, binding, and doughy Q:Can I can cherry tomatoes with the skin on and then remove when I want to use? Thanks Mike A: You cannot can cherry tomatoes with the skin on. It is not safe and also not recommended. 4. How can I lower the PH of my soil for blueberries A:Several materials available at garden centers will lower soil pH; elemental sulfur; aluminum sulfate; iron sulfate; and sulfur coated urea. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages. Generally materials should be worked into the soilafter application to be most effective.. The amount of time it takes to raise soil's pH level depends on the substance used and the starting pH level, but the process usually takes one to two years. Although you can raise soil pH faster or slower, doing so more quickly often has risks for plants. Recently I can and garlic beans and noticed when I was done with that the water level in the beans who is down quite a bit more than what was there when I started. I was wondering if there is any harm in this. Should we throw them or keep or eat? 5 I never knew this could be so invasive! When do I harvest this and then ..how do I get rid of it forever? It is invading my rhubarb garden. Hope the rhubarb doesn't taste like horseradish. In the early fall you need to dig it all up. Get every last bit. Only bring healthy plants in 2. Do your research 3. Bring them indoors while the windows are still open and the temperature indoors is about the same as outside. They'll adjust to the change in temperature and humidity more easily if the change is gradual, rather than waiting until a frost is expected and then bringing the plants into a dry, heated home. 4. Give favor to your favorite plants 5. Take cuttings instead if you lack space 6. Some tender perennials like a period of dormancy in winter. You can overwinter potted lavender and rosemary in your garage or basement. If the temperature doesn't go below 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above 40, they won't freeze but will stay dormant. Just don't let the pots dry out or stay overly wet. Water them only when the soil becomes dry a couple of inches below the surface and allow any excess to drain out. IN THE FRIDGE -Store your apples in the fridge. They soften ten times faster at room temperature. -Most fruits and veggies can be stored in the refrigerator. -A crisper drawer will help protect your produce and keep the moisture in to maintain freshness for longer. -Asparagus should be stored in the refrigerator, wrapped with a moist paper towel or you can stand them up in a glass of cold water wrapped with a damp paper towel. -Store carrots in the fridge and peel them when you’re ready to use them. -Plastic bags with tiny vents help keep produce fresh longer by releasing moisture. They are great for grapes, blueberries, cherries or strawberries. -Store berries in the fridge and wash gently before eating or using. -Fresh heads of lettuce should be washed really well with water before refrigerating. Dry the leaves and store them in a clean plastic bag with a few paper towels. -Rhubarb should be wrapped in plastic and stored in the fridge, but it also freezes well. Facts about the hemp plant Hemp is not marijuana • Hemp is thought to be the first domestically-cultivated plant, with evidence of hemp fabric dating to 8,000 years ago found in Turkey (former-day Mesopotamia). Other evidence suggests cultivation further back by two or more thousands of years. • Hemp products are now legal in the United States, although ingredients or end products are currently imported from other countries – particularly Canada. • Hemp was not always treated as the same as marijuana by the U.S. government. • Benjamin Franklin used hemp in his paper mill – one of the country’s first – and the first two copies of the Declaration of Independence were supposedly written on hemp paper. • In parts of the Americas, hemp was legal tender and could be used to pay taxes. • Hemp paper is stronger than wood-based paper, and can withstand more folding. In general, hemp has strongest natural fiber of any source. • Hemp paper hundreds of years old (found in museums) has not yellowed, and is thus a high quality paper of archival quality. • Marijuana plants cannot be hidden amongst hemp plants. The former grows wide and less tall (5-10 feet), whereas the latter is grown more densely and taller (10-15 feet), to produce maximum stalk fiber lengths. • Hemp can grow nearly anywhere in the world, in many types of soil — even in short growing seasons or in dry regions — and helps purify soil as well as kills some types of weeds • Hemp can grow without pesticides. The crop is also kills some weeds, purifies soil, and is suitable for rotation use, due not only to its short harvest cycle (120 days). • Hemp is a high-yield crop. One acre of hemp produces twice as much oil as one acre of peanuts, and nearly four times as much fiber pulp (for paper) as an acre of trees. • Hemp paper is naturally acid-free and does not yellow as quickly as tree pulp-based paper. • Hemp has the strongest (and longest) plant fiber in the world, resistant to rot and abrasion, and was in long use before DuPont patented nylon in 1937. It was used for ship rigging, military uniforms, parachute webbing, baggage and more. • Because of its strength, hemp fiber can be used for composite materials that could be used to make anything from skateboard decks to car and stealth fighter bodies. • A hemp composite material (with limestone and water) forms a type of concrete (hempcrete) that can be used for home building, at 1/9th the weight. It also acts as insulation and repels some vermin. • Levi jeans were originally made from hemp sailcloth (and rivets), for goldminers in California, who would fill their pockets with gold. • By the 1800s, the state of Kentucky produced about half of the industrial hemp in the U.S. The first hemp crop there was planted in Boyle County in 1775. • Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, created a plastic car in 1941 which ran on hemp and other plant-based fuels, and whose fenders were made of hemp and other materials. Ford had a plan to “grow automobiles from the soil.” (Note: a company in France is experimenting with a similar vehicle in current day.) • Despite the active Marijuana Tax Act and the official federal government stance on hemp and marijuana, the U.S. Army and the Dept of Agriculture jointly produced a 1942 film, “Hemp for Victory,” encouraging farmers to grow hemp for the country’s effort in World War II — particularly for textiles and rope, imports of which had been cut off by war. Over 100,000 acres of hemp was growing in the U.S., but all related permits were canceled when WW II ended. In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about the best way to store your produce The right way to store your produce IN A COOL, DRY PLACE -Keep bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, lemons, and limes in a cool, dry area, not in the fridge. -Mushrooms can be kept in a cool, dry place and should only be washed just before use. -Eggplant should be stored in a cool area -Keep potatoes out of the fridge in a cool, dry place with plenty of ventilation. AT ROOM TEMPERATURE =Garlic and onions should be kept at room temperature (or cooler) in a well-ventilated area. -Tomatoes should be stored at room temperature and washed just before using. -Mangoes, plums, peaches, and pears can be ripened at room temperature in a brown paper bag and should then be refrigerated for longer storage. -Store pineapple upside down for a day or two at room temperature or in the fridge to allow the sweetness to spread throughout the fruit. -Keep whole melons at room temperature. Cantaloupe can be stored at room temperature, but it will ripen quickly. Does this mean that the bulb is at a point where I can cut the tops off and storge the bulbs? A: yes once the tops of the plants have dried then you can cut the tops off and store the bulb in a cool dry place out of sunlight not in the frige and not in closed container in need to breath or it will mold and rot Power Planter of www.powerplanter.com IV Organics of www.ivorganics.com Dr. Earth of www.drearth.com organic Root maker of www.rootmaker.com Flame Engineering Inc. of www.flameengineering.com Use coupon code WVG19 to get free shipping. A: Keep the soil moist. When the soil stays to dry the calcium that is available in the soil is locked out that is the element in which is needed to correctly form the bottom of the tomato. By keeping the soil watered and damp it will not fix the current problem on the plant but will prevent the next generation of fruit development from obtaining the rotten portion on the bottom as it develops. People often say use 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt for 1 gallon of water and water it in this works because you're watering the plants Epsom salt is different than calcium Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate so keep the plants watered if you do see fruit that is rotten on the bottom remove it before it is allowed to fully develop to allow the plant to focus on fruit that is good not rotten. Q:When is the right time to plant fall bulbs A: Not all bulbs should be planted in the fall.keep this in mind Dahlias and gladiolus should be planted in the spring, while daffodils and tulips do well when planted in late summer or early autumn. the rule of thumb: If you are planting a bulb that blooms in the spring, plantit in the fall. The nitrogen found in human urine ensures lush foliage growth; hence, it is best for greens and grassy plants like corn. The high salt content may scorch the plants if you pee directly on them, so it is better to do it a little away from the base of the plant. Better still, collect the pee and dilute it with 10 times water before applying it to the root zone. For tender plants and seedlings, dilute it further. Bury your kitchen scraps Add egg shells Wood ash from wood burning stoves and fireplaces can alkalinize the soil in your asparagus patch and vegetable beds growing broccoli, beans, and beet Get rid of aphids with soap and water Neem oil Baking soda for fungal diseases Check out the following sponsors that make the radio show possible: Thank you Power Planter of www.powerplanter.com IV Organics of www.ivorganics.com Dr. Earth of www.drearth.com organic Root maker of www.rootmaker.com Flame Engineering Inc. of www.flameengineering.com Use coupon code WVG19 to get free shipping. Microbes matter in the soil Microbes are tiny!!!!!! There are more microbes in a teaspoon of soil than there are people on the earth. Soils contain about 8 to 15 tons of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms, and arthropods. Soil microorganisms exist in large numbers in the soil as long as there is a carbon source for energy. large number of bacteria in the soil exists, but because of their small size, they have a smaller biomass. Actinomycetes are a factor of 10 times smaller in number but are larger in size so they are similar in biomass to bacteria. Fungus population numbers are smaller but they dominate the soil biomass when the soil is not disturbed. Bacteria, actinomycetes, and protozoa are hardy and can tolerate more soil disturbance than fungal populations so they dominate in tilled soils while fungal and nematode populations tend to dominate in untilled or no-till soils. Organic matter decomposition serves two functions for the microorganisms, providing energy for growth and suppling carbon for the formation of new cells. Soil organic matter (SOM) is composed of the "living" (microorganisms), the "dead" (fresh residues), and the "very dead" (humus) fractions. The "very dead" or humus is the long-term SOM fraction that is thousands of years old and is resistant to decomposition. Soil organic matter has two components called the active (35 percent) and the passive (65 percent) SOM. Soil organic matter can be broken down into its component parts. One hundred grams (g) or 100 pounds (lbs) of dead plant material yields about 60–80 g (lbs) of carbon dioxide, which is released into the atmosphere. The remaining 20–40 g (lbs) of energy and nutrients is decomposed and turned into about 3–8 g (lbs) of microorganisms (the living), 3–8 g (lbs) of non-humic compounds (the dead), and 10–30 g (lbs) of humus (the very dead matter, resistant to decomposition). The molecular structure of SOM is mainly carbon and oxygen with some hydrogen and nitrogen and small amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. Soil organic matter is a by-product of the carbon and nitrogen cycles. Tilled or unhealthy soils release a lower percent of nitrogen due to lower microbial activity For several years, crops on the newly tilled soil will grow better than the surrounding soils, but over time the soil will be depleted of carbon and the newly tilled soil will become less fertile because the carbon is oxidized as carbon dioxide and lost to the atmosphere. In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about some odd Garden remedies that actually work The composition of urine varies from person to person, but it generally has an NPK ratio of 11-1-2. Bury your kitchen scraps Add egg shells Wood ash from wood burning stoves and fireplaces can alkalinize the soil in your asparagus patch and vegetable beds growing broccoli, beans, and beet Get rid of aphids with soap and water Neem oil Baking soda for fungal diseases In segment 3 Joey and Holly welcome their guest Author of The Farm Girl’s Guide to Preserving the Harvest Ann Accetta Scott of https://afarmgirlinthemaking.com/author/ann/ Ann Accetta Scott is an author, blogger, speaker, entrepreneur, and homesteader. A once suburban housewife turned sustainable homesteader. She is passionatr about the movement of cooking from scratch, clean eating, food ownership, preserving the harvest, natural living, and the art of living simply. 1. You did not grow up homesteading - how did you get into it and why? 2. Many people hear the word ferment and think beer, or yeast possibly, but in the world of homesteading or even gardening, fermenting is another way to preserve food. Can you expand on that and what are some ways an urban gardener could use fermenting to help preserve some of their harvest? 3. Many people dont think about using dehydration to preserve their harvest, and you can find dehydrators gently used for a good price. What are some ways you dehydrate to preserve? 4.Tell us about your book - The Farm Girl’s Guide to Preserving the Harvest - what can people expect from it and anything notable in it? 5. Tell us more about where to find you... In segment 4 Joey and Holly answer gardener's questions Q:How can I fix blossom end rot? You mean the water that I put in the jars with the string beans? A:Yes they need to be hot so their not not such and different when u put them in the canner 2. .Q: I have an issue with my beets the leaves stay and turn dark purple. If you could let me know what it is and what to do that would be great. A:When you notice a plant with purple leaves rather than the normal green color, it is most likely due to a phosphorus deficiency. All plants need phosphorus (P) 3.whats the best way to store Jerusalem Artichoke them for winter? is it ok in garage, in paper bags? The best way to store Jerusalem Artichokes over the winter is a few ways 1. cut the plants at grown level and mound leaves three to four foot on top of the area it is growing to prevent the grown from freezing . 2. Take a bucket put a 2 inches of soil from the garden in the bottom then a layer of Artichokes then cover and repeat. Keep the bucket in a cool not frozen area shed of attic stairs 3. Bag them in a zip top bag and keep in the back of the frige they will last a few months 4. How to deal with snails in the garden? 1. Introduce predators – One effective organic snail control is to introduce or encourage predators. Make your garden friendly to small snakes, like the garter snake 2.Set out traps – A common snail trap is the beer pan. Simply fill a shallow pan with beer and leave it out overnight. The snails will be attracted to the beer and will drown in it. The beer will need to replaced every few days to remain effective. Another trap is to find a flat object than can provide a dark, cool, moist location. Snails love dark, cool, moist areas. You can use a board, a piece of carpet, or thick cloth to create this environment. Water an area, then lay the object down over the damp area. Return in a few days and pick up the object. You can harvest and destroy the hiding snails. 5. Q: jameson on twitter ask Love your show, listen every week. Any truth that watering hot peppers more often makes them hotter? A:Thank you for listening to the show each week to get hotter Peppers it's quite the opposite less water less nitrogen and leave them on the vine longer the heat will intensify in the pepper Check out the following sponsors that make the radio show possible: Thank you Power Planter of www.powerplanter.com IV Organics of www.ivorganics.com Dr. Earth of www.drearth.com organic Root maker of www.rootmaker.com Flame Engineering Inc. of www.flameengineering.com Use coupon code WVG19 to get free shipping. One experiment showed good results by applying a weekly dose of one part milk to two parts water. In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about how to build cold frames Building cold frames Extend your growing season on both parts of the year - spring and fall Can use old windows, wood, straw bales, etc Create mini greenhouse effect Can also use plastic drop cloth - poly sheeting In the spring you can use it to keep the ground warm to plant sooner In the fall into winter you can harvest year round Grow hardy vegetables, carrots, greens, radishes, etc In the fall plants need to be established before any chance of freeze May need to vent during the day In segment 3 Joey and Holly welcome their guest Jessica Walliser Jessica Walliser of http://www.jessicawalliser.com/ is an author, garden radio show host, blogger, columnist, and all around horticultural and botanical enthusiast. She lives in Pittsburgh, PA with her family. As a gardener, you deal with weeds, as an organic gardener, how do you deal with them best? For people growing in small spaces, such as urban gardening, especially vegetables, what is some advice you can give for one new to gardening in small spaces? Many people dont realize you can grow fruit in small spaces, what are some great fruits to grow in containers and why do they work well? Are there any advantages to small space gardening? What are they? Your new book is the Gardener’s Guide to Compact Plants, can you tell us more about it and what to expect when read? How can we find out more about you? In segment 4 Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions Garden questions 1.Q: What temp should the water be? Do you know how long they will take to grow them? Also do you know how tall they will get? If we planted them now would they be ready in time? It is very late in the season.Just lookin for an idea. A help is greatly appreciated. A, Thank you for your question Yukon Gold potatoes take between 85 and 90 days to mature you certainly can plant these that you have gotten from the store. If they are sprouting then that would indicate they have not been treated with any growth inhibitors. Potatoes will typically grow 2 and 1/2 sometimes 3 ft tall based on the nutrient availability in the soil so you should have no problem with these if you're growing them in a container my suggestion would be putting a tomato cage around them to add some extra support to allow more leaves to be exposed to the Sun to grow better. t would be closed as it would be October 20th for 90 days if it was I and I had the space available I would go ahead and put them in even if they do not fully mature you can still Harvest them as small potatoes no matter what stage they are in after the flowers occur 10 weeks after you planted 2. Q How to get rid of Creeping Charlie variety of weed. I have been having a constant battle with this invasive weed years ever since it was sold as a ground cover some 20 years ago! Gerry Michigan A. Pull the Weeds Out from the Ground - pull as many as you can Use the Soil Solarization Process If the lawn is covered end-to-end with creeping Charlie weeds then you may need to employ the soil solarization method. This method uses the heat from the sun to kill the weeds.Cover the weed-invaded area with plastic wrap. Make sure the wrap is firmly rooted to the ground by burying the sides in mini trenches. Leave the plastic wrap for a few weeks. The creeping Charlie will eventually die due to the heat that gets trapped underneath the plastic wrap. Apply an organic Weed Preventer. Weed preventers, like from biosafe, contain natural ingredients such as corn gluten meal. It can prevent creeping Charlie (and other garden weeds) from spreading by reducing the seed germination process. 3.Q What can I put on tomatoes and cucumbers to get rid of spiders? A: do not put anything on the plants to kill them. Spiders eat pests.Spiders feed on common indoor pests, such as Roaches, Earwigs, Mosquitoes, Flies and Clothes Moths. If left alone, Spiders will consume most of the insects in your home, providing effective home pest control. 4. Q: Hi I have been canning for about 6 years. This year I am having problems one jar seems to break in each canner on the bottom of the jar. I do not tighten the top too tight. I am not over stuffing the jars. I use room temp water in my jars. Dharmaceuticals of www.dharmaceuticals.com creates therapeutic essential oils to increase healing, inspiration, ambience, mood Rosemary Essential Oil This oil has a wonderful, woodsy scent and works wonderfully to help repel many pests in the garden. It has been shown to even repel the larvae itself. Place a few drops right on a pot to keep the bugs from chewing up the leaves of your plants. Rosemary essential oil is also a butterfly attractor. They love it, so if you have a butterfly garden it can benefit you in this way as well. Peppermint Essential Oil This oil has a sweeter scent and repels several garden pests like aphids, flies and beetles and even spiders can’t stand it! You can place peppermint oil around baseboards or in cupboards in your home to keep spiders away. I use it for ants too (more essential oils for repelling pests)! Melaleuca Essential Oil This oil is great for dealing with anything that has to do with getting rid of fungus on your plants. You can make a spray with it to mist your plants and soil. Use melaleuca essential oil on the stems more so than the leaves though, as it does cause the plants to be more sun-sensitive. So keep in mind that a thick application could cause burn on the leaves. Lavender Essential Oil Lavender’s scent is another one butterflies love, so if you spray lavender oil near the plants to attract them. It will draw them in even more! Lavender essential oil also attracts bees, which we need for pollination. Place a drop or two on a cotton ball and place in pots or in the garden to attract them too. Orange Essential Oil Orange oil has a really clean and sweet aroma that draws both bees and butterflies. You can make a blend of rosemary oil, lavender oil, orange oil in a spray bottle or combine a few drops of each on cotton balls to help attract them both. Cinnamon Essential Oil Cinnamon oil is one of the best essential oils for getting rid of weeds. Make a spray bottle with water and several drops of cinnamon essential oil and get to spraying those weeds in a safe and effective way! Here is a list of recipes you can use in your garden: Garden Insect Deterrent Add 10 drops of the following essential oils to a 4-ounce glass spray bottle: Rosemary oil, peppermint oil, clove oil and thyme oil. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake to mix. Apply anywhere you would like to get rid of insects. Plant Fungus Suppressant In a 4-ounce glass spray bottle, combine water with 25 drops melaleuca essential oil. Spray on plants and soil to help keep away the fungal growth. Veggie and Fruit Wash Fill up a large bowl with cold water and add in ½ cup vinegar and 6 to 8 drops of lemon essential oil or orange essential oil. Place your fruits and veggies in it to soak for a few minutes and then rinse well. Pollinator Attractor Spray In a 4-ounce glass spray bottle, add 6 to 8 drops orange oil and top off with water. Shake to blend and spray on flower and buds to attract bees for pollination. Want to keep bugs off you while you’re gardening? Make a DIY Bug Repellent with essential oils. Creeping charlie is truly a pain. Hope that works out for you! How to get rid of Creeping Charlie variety of weed. The first stage is typically only a couple of days long during which mesophilic microorganisms, or microorganisms that thrive in temperatures of about 68 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 45 degrees Celsius), begin physically breaking down the biodegradable compounds. Heat is a natural byproduct of this initial process and temperatures quickly rise to over 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). Mesophilic microorganisms are replaced by thermophilic microorganisms (microorganisms that thrive in the increased temperatures) during the second stage, which can last from a few days to several months. The thermophilic microbes work to break down the organic materials into finer pieces. The higher temperatures are more conducive to breaking down proteins, fats and complex carbohydrates. Also, during the second stage, temperatures continue to rise and if not closely watched, the compost pile can get so hot that it can eventually kill off all the helpful microorganisms. Techniques such as aeration and turning over the compost pile help keep temperatures below about 149 degrees F (65 degrees C), as well as provide additional oxygen and new sources for the thermophilic microorganisms to break down. The third stage, which typically lasts for several months, begins when the thermophilic microorganisms use up the available supply of the compounds. At this stage, temperatures begin to drop enough for mesophilic microorganisms to resume control of the compost pile and finish breaking down the remaining organic matter into usable humus. balance of "greens" and "browns" is needed to create the proper environment for composting to occur. Greens are nitrogen-rich, and include items such as grass clippings, fruit and vegetable waste, and coffee grounds. Browns are the carbon-rich yard clippings, such as dead leaves, branches and twigs. A carbon-to-nitrogen ratio between 25 to 1 and 30 to 1 is ideal for rapid composting There are two main classes of composting microorganisms, known as aerobes and anaerobes, according to Planet Natural. The aerobes are bacteria that require oxygen levels of at least 5 percent to survive and are the most important and efficient composting microorganisms, according to the University of Illinois. The aerobes consume the organic waste and excrete chemicals such as nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium, which are nutrients plants need to thrive. Anaerobic microorganisms are bacteria that don't require oxygen. They also don't process the organic waste as efficiently as aerobic bacteria. Anaeorbs produce chemicals that are occasionally toxic to plants, and they cause composting piles to stink because they release hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. About 80 to 90 percent of all microorganisms found in compost piles are bacteria, according to Cornell University. The remaining percentage of microorganisms are species of fungi, including molds and yeasts. Alan asks What are some ideas for getting rid of mugwort (artemisia spp.) without resorting to inorganic means? A:Use organic weed killer as soon as it comes up like Bio safe. Same for weeding it out. Its best to eradicate it asap 2. Q Dear Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener, : I saw one of your YouTube videos about saving onion/shallot seeds and I have a question about shallot seeds. I have a small bed where last year I planted about 20 shallot bulbs. This spring the shallots are doing great and i've left two plants go to seed. The flowers have formed this globe-like flower but if I open one of the flowers I don't see any black seeds. In each of the tiny flowers I see several tiny seeds. Also, some of those tiny flowers have opened up. Those tiny, tiny seeds inside the flower, are those that I need to save? Should I wait a little longer before checking for the black seeds? Evan from New york A: yes the flowers will have seeds in them. You will need to wait till the plant dies the seeds need that time to develop that is where the black seed will be. The flower opening up is normal for the plant to grow the seed. 3 Q: Hi there I have a question about the slime mold (had to google it to name it) It grew in yellow hard foam piles on the sides of my raised bed I left it alone & looks like it died but it continues to be so rainy that it popped up elsewhere. Now I have mold on the stalks of radishes & beets beneath the greens. Is that affecting the veggies & do I have to pull & toss them? Very intimidating in spite of Prof Google saying it’s harmless. Thanks in advance! -Teresa in Saint Francis A: Thank you for the question Correct it is not harmful to humans. Some cultures eat slime mold as well. As for it being on the stalks of your plants it is not hurting them at all. If it was to grow on the leaves then if can kill the plant. when on the ground it will appear and the disappear with in a few days. Also you can remove any much and weeds from around the plant to get to bare soil and to let more air and light get to it and dry it up. At the time of harvest just clean the edible parts with white vinegar and that will kill any spores that remain. If you want to kill it, Spray it well with 1 tablespoon of baking soda mixed with 1 gallon of water 4: Q No matter how hard I try Holly my peaches float in the jar. I pack tightly any suggestions? A: Thank you for the question, Floating is normal no matter how tight you are able to pack items in a jar there will be some floating that happen. some reasons it happens are, Overripe fruit - the acid and pectin content is lower. Air can remain in the tissues of the fruit after processing. 5. Great leaves nobulbs A:If this was early on in the season early spring I would suggest it was a nutrient deficiency in the soil but as we have crossed Into Summer radishes are a cool season short day Cropper day light sensitive crop so as it's warm and the days are long the plant is going to go into a reproductive State not a bulb development State however. You are the founder of Plant a Row for the Hungry? What does that organization do? Or encourage others to do? 3. What are some common macro and micro nutrients in our soil? How do we know if there is a deficiency? 5. What are some good ways to build up the fungi and decomposers on your soil? 6. Can you tell us more about where to find you?
