POPULARITY
Kerala and West Bengal elections will either confirm the trend of right-ward shift in politics or underscore the CPI(M) leadership's optimism on the relevance of the Left.
Bring all CPI(M) members from across India together in one constituency, Malkajgiri in Telangana, and they can still barely manage to defeat sitting BJP MP Etela Rajender. How and why the Comrades have lost the plot, ThePrint Political Editor DK Singh explains in this episode of #PoliticallyCorrect

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 3rd of April and here are today's headlines. The Trump administration's new tariffs on global trade partners, including a 27% duty on imports from India, will affect sectors like diamonds, smartphones, solar PV modules, and apparel. While certain products like critical minerals, energy products, and pharmaceuticals may be exempt, most of India's top exports, including pharmaceuticals worth $8 billion, are not. Petroleum oils derived from bituminous minerals could benefit, but tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain unchanged. These measures could reshape trade relations with India, despite limited relief for some sectors. After nearly 12 hours of debate in the Lok Sabha, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill moved to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion. BJP MPs accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation, while TMC MP Mohammad Nadimul Islam criticized the Bill as cultural vandalism, accusing the Centre of seeking excessive control over Waqf. The Lok Sabha passed the Bill with 288 votes in favor and 232 votes against. The amendment now awaits a decision in the Rajya Sabha after being tabled by Kiren Rijiju. On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi criticized the government over the border row with China and tariffs imposed by the U.S. He claimed China had taken over 4,000 sq km of Indian territory, stating that the government's actions, including a cake-cutting ceremony with the Chinese ambassador, were inappropriate. Gandhi stressed that normalcy could not proceed without restoring status quo and recovering lost land. He emphasized that the martyrdom of 20 Indian soldiers should be honored, and their sacrifices should not be undermined by diplomatic gestures. The Supreme Court reprimanded Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy over his comments regarding bypolls in the state Assembly. The two-judge bench questioned whether they erred in letting him off last August when he made allegedly contemptuous remarks. The bench was hearing cases about the delay in disqualifying BRS MLAs who had joined the Congress. This development highlights ongoing tensions over political defections and the role of the judiciary in overseeing the actions of state lawmakers and their impact on public affairs. After the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court's decision to dismiss over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff hired illegally by West Bengal schools, Opposition parties criticized the ruling TMC. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her disagreement, suggesting political influence from the CPI(M) and BJP. She questioned the judicial process, pointing out the contrasting decisions from different Chief Justices. The dismissal followed the 2016 illegal recruitment by the School Service Commission, requiring the affected staff to return salaries with interest, marking a significant blow to the state's education sector. That's all for today. Fadnavis stated that while satire is acceptable, it shouldn't insult individuals. He emphasized that freedom of speech shouldn't be misused. Kamra's remarks, made to the tune of a song from Dil To Pagal Hai, sparked political controversy. Fadnavis affirmed that action would be taken against Kamra for crossing the line in political commentary.Shashi Tharoor on Parliament DisruptionsCongress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the BJP-led government's handling of Parliament, calling it "shocking" after both houses were adjourned shortly after the session began. He accused the ruling party of deliberately disrupting the proceedings, failing to fulfill its responsibility. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also from Congress, expressed concerns, suggesting that the government had intentionally obstructed the House's functioning, using excuses to create a ruckus and avoid legislative business. The adjournments triggered further political tensions.Surge in US Student Visa DenialsUS student visa rejections reached a decade-high in the 2023-24 fiscal year, with 41% of F-1 visa applications denied. This represents nearly double the rejection rate seen in 2014. A total of 6.79 lakh applications were processed, with 2.79 lakh refusals. This marks a rise from 2022-23 when 36% of applications were rejected. Data on country-specific refusals remains unavailable, though Indian applicants have faced significant declines, with student visa issuances falling by 38% compared to the previous year.Kannur Court Sentences Eight CPI(M) WorkersA district sessions court in Kannur sentenced eight CPI(M) workers, including the brother of Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan's press secretary, to life imprisonment for the 2005 murder of BJP worker Elambilayi Sooraj. An Indian Express investigation has revealed that the key reason is a glaring skill mismatch after an assessment process that over-promised and under-delivered when it came to workers' abilities. Israel has since taken the unprecedented step of allowing these workers to be re-deployed in unskilled or industrial jobs in non-construction sectors to avoid “damage” to “important relations” between both countries.Meanwhile, in his first visit abroad as the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi attacked the Narendra Modi led government, accusing it of trying to undermine the Constitution and standing in the way of holding a nationwide caste census, themes that defined the Opposition's campaign in the parliamentary elections. On the three-day visit to the US, Gandhi, accused the BJP government of stifling free speech; indulging in crony capitalism; attacking federalism; capturing Indian institutions, including the media; depriving the Opposition of a level playing field; and spreading communalism in an attempt to destroy India's pluralism. On the global front, what started off with a handshake turned into a fierce battle as Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faced each other on Tuesday night during the Presidential debate for the first, and possibly, the last time ahead of the November polls. Inflation, abortion, immigration and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza were some of the issues that took centrestage in the debate moderated by ABC News anchors David Me-oh and Linsey Davis. The early pleasantries set the tone for the 90-minute exchange, with Harris baiting Trump with jabs over the economy during his presidency, while the latter retorted with jibes similar to his debate with Joe Biden. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, April 3, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Indian equity markets remained largely flat on Wednesday. Both Sensex and Nifty fell marginally around 0.1 percent each. Director Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur became a cult classic because of its realistic depiction of 1980s gang wars in eastern India's coal belt. However, reality is stranger than fiction – an adage that journalists strive to prove. We invited Romita Datta, a West Bengal-based journalist, to write about Sheikh Shahjahan, a revolver-toting goon who came to rule over the village of Sandeshkhali. As his power and popularity grew, Shahjahan aligned himself with the various political forces in West Bengal, including the Left, CPI (M), and the Trinamool Congress. But before becoming an elected official, Shahjahan got caught up in allegations of extortion, land grabbing, sexual abuse and money laundering. He was finally arrested in February. Romita's exhilarating story of this powerful shrimp-farming thug captures his rise to prominence and how he then ended up behind bars. The pandemic, social distancing, inflation and unseasonal rains all got in the way of the alco-bev industry's success over the last few years. But an unusual Indian Summer seems to be just what it needs for a revival of its spirits. In this weather, a cold beer can turn around a hot, sweaty day. Beer makers hope so too: they are gearing up for increased sales in 2024. Last year, sales dropped 10 percent as unseasonal rains dented demand. However, officials from these companies expect some uncertainty stemming from election dates. A long election cycle will result in sporadic dry days, lowering sales, writes Mint's lifestyle and hospitality correspondent Varuni Khosla, in this seasonal industry forecast. The devil works hard, but political parties in India work harder. After the Supreme Court struck down Electoral Bonds as "unconstitutional", the Ministry of Finance is now working towards a new scheme for campaign financing or the funding of political parties. Mint's economy reporter Gireesh Chandra Prasad reports that the new scheme will directly address the apex court's concerns around transparency and extent of financing. This scheme, however, is only likely to come into place once the general elections are over, Gireesh adds. For years now, electric two-wheelers have enjoyed generous subsidies by the central government. The government recently introduced another subsidy, but this is capped at 10,000 rupees per vehicle. Mint's national editor and auto expert Sumant Banerji writes that this move will hike prices by anywhere between 5 to 10,000 rupees per scooter — an increase of about 7 to 10% for automakers. The industry, for its part, hasn't passed on this hike to the consumer yet. With electric scooters already more expensive than their petrol counterparts, any further increase in prices might put potential customers off, writes Sumant. Last week, some Axis Bank customers got a huge shock when they received messages of money being randomly deducted from their account. To make matters worse, the money was deducted in a foreign currency. A series of international fraudulent transactions hit dozens of Axis Bank customers across India. Some others received OTPs to carry out the same transaction. Axis reversed these transactions in a few days, but the damage was done. Mint Money's Shipra Singh spoke to some victims of this scam. Some of these customers had already blocked their cards and requested a new one — only to find these fraudulent transactions taking place in the new card as well. Axis hasn't provided an explanation to its customers as to why this happened. Shipra also provides a helpful list of actions one should take if they are affected by this scam or know someone who is. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. You may send us feedback, tips or anything that you feel we should be covering from your vantage point in the world of business and finance. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 23rd of February and here are the top stories of the week. The farmers' protest that resumed on Wednesday, was suspended for two days after a protester, 21-years-old Subhkaran Singh of Bathinda district, died due to a head injury. In the view of this, farmer leaders demanded registration of a murder case against those responsible for the death. Several farmers were also injured as the Haryana Police dropped tear gas shells at the Shambhu and Khanauri border. The leaders will review the situation and announce the next course of agitation this evening.Sandeshkhali has been at the centre of a political firestorm ever since protests broke out in the area earlier this month. On Monday, a journalist was arrested for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman and trespassing into the complainant's house and was later granted bail by the Calcutta High Court. The police also booked a talk show host of a Bengali news channel for promoting enmity and "conducting public mischief". Moreover, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) were stopped by the police from visiting Sandeshkhali on Tuesday. West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar visited the violence-hit area for the first time on Thursday and said the police will listen to the complaints of every individual and strict action will be taken against those found guilty. The Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a Bill granting 10 per cent reservation in education and jobs to the Maratha community. In this episode, Justin and Marcus continue to demystify supply chain buzzwords. This episode's focus is on Resilience. Too frequently the term resilience is summarized into inventory - companies with more inventory are more resilient and companies with less inventory are less resilient. Justin and Marcus think that this is a fallacy and an oversimplification of a very important concept. The podcast welcomes a special guest expert, Dr. Richard Ham, to discuss the topic of risk & resilience and provide some practical takeaways.
