A wonderful conversation about life through rowing with Havilah Hawkins: schooner captain, boat designer and builder, youth sailing educator, master shipwright, and zen bottom paint scraper extraordinaire. Second in our multi-part series from Brooklin Boat Yard in Brooklin, Maine. This conversation happened spontaneously in the midst of John Maxwell's amazing tour. We came around the stern of a shapely classic daysailer in the shop and Havilah was kind enough to pause his work and chat. Thank you for listening!

Douglas Brooks has spent his career as an apprentice, researcher, and teacher of traditional Japanese wooden boats. Doug's home base is in Vermont, USA, but he has been to Japan over 25 times and has been to all 47 prefectures of Japan to research, build and even teach at various Japanese boatmaking projects. #japan #boatbuilding #woodenboats #craft #japaneseculture We catch up with Doug here while he is finishing a set of boats in Kagawa, Japan this month- so this is a fantastic chance to catch up with him in the same time zone and talk about his apprenticeships, book, work, passion, and insights for the traditional art of Japanese boatbuilding.Douglas Brooks Links:https://linktr.ee/douglasbrooksFrom his website: Douglas has many years of experience training with masters of traditional Japanese boatbuilding, building boats himself, running workshops and seminars for students and is the author of the book "Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding". About the book: "This is the story of my apprenticeships with Japanese masters to build five unique and endangered traditional boats. It is part ethnography, part instruction, and part my personal reflections on preserving a craft tradition on the brink of extinction. Over the course of 17 trips to Japan, I have travelled over 30,000 miles to seek out and interview Japan's elderly master boat builders; I built boats with five of them, all in their seventies and eighties, between 1996 and 2010. For most of them, I was their sole and last apprentice." I met Maikel in Bocas del Toro when he sold me a dinghy that he built. He invited me into his shop, where he had built an aluminum dinghy from scratch. Also in the shop was a dismantled 34' aluminum sailboat, which he was rebuilding. In this episode, we discuss this project, which includes building a lifting keel, as well as how he finances his nomadic life working on other boats.
Today we bring on two boat builders, one who does it for pleasure and built his dream boat and one who's been doing it professionally his entire life. Chris van Grieken, who hadn't built a 40' express boat picks John Floyd (F&S Boatworks) brain on the processes and technicalities to build the best sport fishing boats on the planet.

You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Aquidneck Island is home to the International Yacht Restoration School of Technology and Trades? Currently, four accredited programs are offered including Digital Modeling & Fabrication, Composites Technology, Boatbuilding & Restoration, and Marine Systems. Now, for our feature story: A University of Rhode Island graduate student will be scouring lakes, ponds and wetlands throughout Rhode Island over the next three years to search for signs of three semi-aquatic mammals to document their distribution in the state. Traveling via kayak, John Crockett will search for evidence of muskrats, beavers and river otters in waterways of southwestern Rhode Island this winter before expanding his search to other areas of the state in the coming years. Crockett, a native of Fort Collins, CO is collaborating with URI Assistant Professor Brian Gerber. “The main goal of the study is to get a good sense of the distribution of each species across the state. To do that, we're conducting an occupancy analysis, which means we're going out looking for signs of tracks, scat, chewed sticks, lodges and sightings of the animals.” All three species have been the target of trappers in Rhode Island for many years — though the state legislature banned the trapping of river otters in the 1970s — and most of what state wildlife officials know about the animals is derived from trapping data. But since trapping has been decreasing in popularity in recent years, less and less data about the animals is being collected. Gerber said: “We want to make sure we have a good assessment of where these mammals are found. It's been 10 or 15 years since anyone has spent much time looking for them, and we want to see if we find any changes in their distribution since those earlier surveys.” According to Crockett, Muskrats are in decline across much of their range in the United States, and now they are difficult to find. The decrease in trapping activity has made it difficult to tell whether the animals are in decline in Rhode Island or if the lack of trapping just makes it appear that way. “Ever since the '70s, we've been mostly in the dark about where these animals live and how many there might be,” Crockett expects to conduct his surveys from December through March for the next three years, as well as periodic summer surveys. He eventually hopes to be able to estimate the probability that any of the three species will be found in a given habitat. The URI scientists are working closely on the project with wildlife biologists at the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management so the data can be used to help prioritize habitat for protection and inform management decisions on trapping limits. Athena Aicher is a boat builder on Martha’s Vineyard, but she wasn’t always. Seven years ago, Athena moved to Woods Hole to work in a lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Athena gave up life in the lab to work in a boat yard. Today, she hears sea birds while she works and can smell the salt air. Her dog, Clio, runs on the beach. The work is hard – bending straight planks of wood into a new, curved life is not easy -but that’s part of the appeal.
O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen!

BOATBUILDING -- WHICH KIND? After doing several interview capers, we have here the results of some interesting comparisons, resulting from hurricane damage, between good old sheet plywood construction, and "cold molded" or Constant Camber (CC) construction. Design differences between the Searunner 34 and the CC 35 are discussed, as are the challenges of getting good wood for these boats today. And, oh yes, the virtues of epoxy! In the end, if you want to go NOW, buy a good, used monohull. There are lots of them around begging to go cruising.

THE 300-NUT CANOE (And Other Considerations) This Caper takes us to a salvaged 57-foot catamaran, upside down and abandoned in the Caribbean last November, but recently discovered adrift off North Carolina, still habitable and salvageable. This is then compared to a small aluminum skiff drifting for months with crew aboard who are “returned “from the dead.” Also, issues of demographic centralization and global sea level rise, are related to good times and bad luck. Tell us what you think.
Expert sailor and master woodworker, Nat Benjamin, shares his story on episode 10
SPACE-AGE BOATBUILDING This caper features Jim sharing about his trip to New England this week, where he got a glimpse of the most cutting-edge boatbuilding technology on display from his hosts. It's a far cry from backyard boatbuilding, and Jim offers many details on how what is going on at the building shop he visited will likely reach many in the sailing world sooner rather than later. Jim finishes off this podcast by also talking about his encounter with Amaryllis, the catamaran designed by Nathanael Herreshoff that, which launched in 1876. So there you have it ... a Jim Brown capercast that touches the 19th century on into the 21st.
We talk with Andrew Randell about a sail boat building project his father started in 1963 that came to a standstill when tragedy struck his family while on holiday in 1966. 36 years later Andrew rescues the partly built sailing yacht that had steadily deteriorated over almost 4 decades and he starts a 7 year mission to complete what his father had started. For a guy that had never built a boat before, let alone sailed one, its a great story of what can be achieved when you are determined and focused. As a result of Andrews fine craftsmanship he was awarded the Hal Harper Award by the New South Wales Wooden Boat Association in 2011 for his demonstration of wooden boat building skills and the preservation of historical wooden sailing boats.
