In this powerful and deeply important episode, we shed light on an often overlooked issue: eating disorders in men. While conditions like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are frequently associated with women, men suffer too — often in silence, hidden by stigma and misunderstanding. We dive into the real experiences behind these struggles, emphasizing that there is a person behind every illness, battling serious physical and mental health challenges that, in severe cases, can lead to suicidal thoughts.Joining us first is Conor Nolan, a mental health advocate from Blacklion and former student of St Clare's Comprehensive School, Manorhamilton. Conor shares his personal story of developing anorexia at just 12 years old.Conor opens up about how the illness “crept” into his life during early secondary school years. He reflects on feeling "helpless" and "possessed" by his disorder and the long, private road to recovery while trying to maintain a "normal" appearance to the outside world. His book, "Normal", offers personal insights and advice for teenagers, parents, siblings, and friends to better understand and recognize eating disorders early.Today, Conor co-runs the Normal - Mental Wellbeing Project, proudly co-funded by the European Commission, helping young people across Ireland. You can find Conor's book "Normal" on Amazon and in local Irish bookstores. We then welcome Sean Blake, a married father of four from Dublin, who bravely shares his journey of mental health struggles from childhood into adulthood, culminating in his diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa coming into his 30s.Sean discusses the challenges of facing an eating disorder later in life and how being open about his story is helping him heal while hopefully inspiring others.Sean is actively involved in mental health advocacy through Shine, Bodywhys, and St Patrick's Mental Health Services, and he featured in the RTE documentary "Anorexia: My Family & Me."Closing Thoughts:Eating disorders are not just physical illnesses — they are deeply rooted in mental health. They do not discriminate by gender, age, or background. We hope today's conversations with Conor and Sean shine a light on the hidden struggles many endure and encourage listeners to seek help if they need it or to better support those around them.If you or someone you know is affected, please reach out for help:www.shine.ie – Confidential support for mental health recovery. Content Advisory - this podcast episode covers eating disorders Sene Naoupu is a former Irish Women's Rugby Union International who earned 48 caps for Ireland before her retirement in 2022. She was a member of the team that won the 2015 Women's Six Nations Championship, she represented Ireland at the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup and she was also part of the Irish women's national rugby sevens team. Sene is a Samoan New Zealander whose mother taught her to embrace the different cultures she was part of growing up and after emigrating to Ireland in 2009, she felt a strong connection with the people of Ireland and was proud to be accepted as one of their own when she became eligible to play for Ireland and made her debut in 2015. This was something of a second chance for Sene who developed an eating disorder in her twenties which might have ended her dreams of a sporting career but she has bravely spoken about her recovery and is now a member of the board of Bodywhys, a nationwide Irish charity supporting people with eating disorders. Sene has always felt a keen sense of service to others and giving back and along with her dedication to rugby on the pitch, she has worked just as hard off the pitch to promote equal opportunities in sport and she is frustrated to see the situation for the current Women's International Irish rugby team. Sene hopes that changes in leadership strategies and attitudes will allow the winning potential of the Irish Women's team to shine through. On Episode 61 I am delighted to be joined by former Dublin Minor hurling goalkeeper Cormac Ryan. Weeks after playing in an All Ireland Final Cormac was diagnosed with a heart condition and had a pacemaker inserted at 18 years of age which turned his life upside down. Cormac took a year out of college and returned to the U21 County Set up as the substitute goalkeeper however had begun to suffer with his mental health. This went on for many years under the surface and Cormac describes how the GAA culture negatively attributed to this. Cormac had plans to cycle across the United States in 2020 in aid of Pieta House and BodyWhys, while the cycle was postponed due to the pandemic Cormac's mental health deteriorated and he sought help in the Summer of 2021. Cormac agreed to take part in the RTE documentary Unspoken to help others in his situation. Cormac attended a private clinic and over 8 weeks and following his treatment he began cycling from to Athens with two friends, just under 5000km raising €48,015. Cormac has now raised over €100,000 for charity. The RTE documentary, Unspoken, detailed the eating disorder crisis in Irish men and the lack of public health services opened the nation's eyes to the issues that currently persist for the nation's health services and the lack of resources allocated to the mental health sector. This week Ranae speaks with Harriet Parsons. She is a psychotherapist and the Training and Development manager with BodyWhys, the national charity for Eating Disorders in Ireland. Their mission is to ensure support, awareness and understanding of eating disorders amongst the wider community as well as advocating for the rights and healthcare needs of people affected by eating disorders.
In this week's episode, Ranae speaks to Amanda from Dublin who has battled with anorexia for most of her adult life. She has been treated as an inpatient multiple times. Amanda is in a place of active illness and her bravery in speaking to Ranae for this episode was astounding. This must have been very difficult for Amanda, but it is important for people to see the reality of what an Eating Disorder does. Perhaps even saying these things out loud, will lessen their power? If you need medical advice, please speak to a professional or contact BodyWhys, the national charity for eating disorders in Ireland on 01 210 7906

In our first podcast, we welcome Barry Murphy, communication officer from Bodywhys - The Eating Disorder Association of Ireland. We examine/define the various presentations of eating disorders and address the existing social stigmas and common misconceptions, while also advising on the various kind of services provided by Bodywhys and the Irish health services for patients and families affected by eating disorders. We also consider current research and how the Covid-19 pandemic has fuelled mental health issues particularly affecting people with a vulnerability towards developing eating disorders. We address all of this and more with the hope of raising awareness on disordered eating as an illness and help to better understand those affected by such disorders.
