Did you know? The expression 'Boot-up' originated in 1834 and this is long before anyone knew what the computer was. We often use the term boot up to start the computer. Originally, the expression was meant to mean 'lift oneself up from their bootstraps'.In this episode of #TheHabitCoach, Ashdin Doctor talks about 'restarting your habits'. He shares an interesting correlation between the computer boot-up system with our consumption habits of food and beverages. Further, Ashdin shares a few healthy eating habits during festivities and how to practically implement them in our lives. The goal of this blog and podcast series is to bring CS education research into the K-8 classroom. In this episode, I take a deep dive into the paper Measuring the effect of continuous professional development on elementary teachers' self-efficacy to teach coding and computational thinking with one it's authors Jared O'Leary. Jared is the Director of Education and Research at BootUp. BootUp is a non-profit that provides professional development (PD) to K-8 educators at a district level. They take a continuous PD approach which means their goal is to work with teachers several times throughout the year, over a 2-3 year span. Find resources here.
Click here for this episode’s show notes.Hey everyone, Jared O'Leary here with the #CSK8 Podcast. I wanted to interrupt the regular schedule for this podcast to ask for some recommendations. In particular, I'm asking for recommendations in three areas: 1) guests to interview, 2) topics and publications to unpack, and 3) recommending the podcast to other CS educators. Although I have a variety of guests scheduled for upcoming interviews and have already released nearly 40 interviews at the time of this recording, I'm always looking for more people to chat with and would really appreciate recommendations for people to interview on the show. I'm also interested in hearing more about what topics and papers you'd like me to unpack or discuss in an upcoming episode. For these first two recommendations you can email me by using the "contact me" button on my website, which I'll include a link to in the description. And by the way, please feel free to recommend yourself if you'd like to share what you're exploring in CS education. For the final recommendation I just ask that you share this with someone else to help spread the word. Most of the time when you hear people make this request it's so they can increase their income through monetizing content; however, that's not why I'm asking for this. For context, BootUp has been able to monetize our YouTube channel for well over a year now and has had a couple thousand hours of watch time just in the last 90 days alone; however, we chose to not monetize our free resources and don't have any plans to change that. The same goes for this podcast. I'm asking for these three recommendations because I genuinely want to learn from awesome people and share content with the community. If you'd be so kind, please consider recommending a guest, a topic or paper, or recommending this podcast to a friend. Thank you so much for listening to this short request. I hope you're all having a wonderful week and are staying safe.
Is there a particular program that you want to run automatically, every time you turn on your computer? Here's how to make that happen. We've asked to be a 'radically different' Church but already that possibility of mission is retracting as buildings close and movements are restricted. Daniel explores how radical difference means that mainline progressive theology is now falling off a cliff - we have to regain a supernatural faith.
Simon Rego explains fear of the unknown, Clark Merkley discusses coding for kids, Rebecca Hershberg talks about parents posting their kids, Judith Orloff teaches about self-care for empaths, Lindsey Wimmer discusses losing a baby, Rod Griffin gives financial tips for young people.
Fear of the Unknown (0:00:00) A dark hallway, an empty closet, an echoing abyss that seems to fall down through the earth itself. These all have one thing in common: the unknown. Many people are afraid of what they don't know, including some of our team here at The Lisa Show. The fear of the unknown is something that many are familiar with, and some have even deemed “the fundamental fear”. So how do we deal with the unknown? Today we are joined by Chief Psychologist and Director of Psychology Training at Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Simon Rego, as he helps us understand this phobia. BootUp PD (0:15:51) Every time our kids play their favorite phone or computer game they're using code. It's a huge part of our modern world, so you'd think thatevery kid would be learning coding in school. But what does ‘coding' even mean? It sounds like some ambiguous skill that only geniuses use to navigate the depths of technology. But, in reality, most kids would be able to pick it up in no time, but the teachers don't know how to teach it because they didn't grow up with it. That's why BootUp Professional Development is working to help teachers provide a high quality coding education for their students. Clark Merkley, BootUp's Executive Director, joins us today to talk about the non-profit's goals and how they are helping kids learn to code. Posting Tantrums (0:31:31) Instead of falling into a panic as your child throws a temper tantrum while, a common and often relaxing response to the highly stressful situation is to laugh or even film the meltdown. However, what are we teaching our kids as we ignore their emotions and mock their moodiness on our social media? Dr. Rebecca Hershberg, founder of Little House Calls Psychological Services, joins us today to discuss why posting about your child's meltdown in a poor responseto the situation, and how we can help our toddlers learn empathy through our example. Self-Care for Empaths (0:51:02) Now I'm sure I won't be alone when I say it can be exhausting to pay attention to the news. Especially in our political climate, it seemslike something new and terrible happens every day. It weighs on me—I'm sure it weighs on you too! So what can we do to make sure that we're protecting our health from the effects of the turbulent news cycles? Here with a couple answers for us is Dr. Judith Orloff, psychiatrist & author of the upcoming book, "Thriving As An Empath: 365 Days of Self-Care for Sensitive People." Pregnancy and Infant Loss (1:04:42) We've all witnessed the tragedy of a still-birthor infant loss. Whether it was our own loss or the loss of a friend or loved one, this experience is devastating. This month is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and we wanted to take some time to talk about this incredible trial that so many of us go through. Lindsey J. Wimmer is the Executive Director of Star Legacy Foundation–a non-profit organization dedicated to prevention and care for stillbirth and neonatal death. We thought she would be the perfect person to have this conversation with. Finances for Young People (1:25:45) Unfortunately, personal finance isn't a required subject in most high schools. This leaves young adults feeling uncertain and nervous about managing money on their own, applying for credit, and staying out of debt. As parents, teachers, or role models, we need to make sure that we can guide these adolescents to making good financial decisions. Rod Griffin is the Director of Consumer Education for Experian. He's with us to tell us everything we need to know about teaching younger generations to be financially responsible.

The nation's capital is swept up in the #BootUp movement. We start today's show with a quick sitdown with the most famous person to ever appear on the podcast. After that very serious conversation, we dive deep into Michigan State. We talk personnel, offensive and defensive tendencies, and maybe some areas LSU can try to take advantage of, as they prepare to face perhaps the best team they've faced all season.
LSU tops Yale 79-74 for the program's first NCAA Tournament win in a decade, and we storm the locker room after to talk about all the relevant topics as the Tigers prepare to take their shot at the Sweet 16. - Skylar Mays on keeping the team connected - Tremont Waters on the emotions of his NCAA Tournament debut - Assistant coach Greg Heiar on game planning against the Bulldogs - Marlon Taylor on shutting down a future pro and the Ivy League Player of the Year - Heiar on flipping the page to the next opponent on just two days turnaround Lots of audio from postgame, and plenty of breakdown on how the Tigers started fast and finished not so fast to beat Yale. I also throw out a theory as to why the Tigers' shooting fell off from a torrid first half to a tepid second half. Share/subscribe/review/#BootUp.
On today's episode, we take a look back at LSU's 94-63 win over Southeastern. Cody gets Emmitt Williams' perspective on his first start, Skylar Mays talks about Marlon Taylor's athleticism and Naz Reid's jelly, and Will Wade talks about Steady Eddie and preview a tough matchup with UNC-Greensboro on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the PMAC.
