In today's episode of Category Visionaries, we speak with Marcelo Lebre, COO and Co-founder of Remote, a global payroll, tax and HR compliance platform that's raised nearly $500 Million in funding, about how supporting employers to recruit, hire and pay the best talent from across the world is building a better way of working for everyone. Their remote-first offering might have seemed outlandish just a few years ago, but in a post-pandemic economy it has quickly taken this young startup to unicorn status, a growth trend that sees no signs of slowing down any time soon. We also speak about what it was like growing up as a tech-obsessed kid in a small rural town, how Marcelo's family responded to his rapid success, why it's sometimes hard for him to comprehend the scale of what remote has become, why anxiety can be a superpower as much as a ‘super problem,' and why, at the end of the day, for Marcelo it all comes down to problem-solving. Topics Discussed: The origins of remote, from a small village upbringing to a chance double date, and on to become a globally recognised brand Why working remotely means Marcelo sometimes struggles to get his head around the growth Remote has experienced in recent years How the COVID-19 pandemic supercharged the remote-work revolution, and how Marcelo's vision put Remote ahead of the curve What it felt like to have friends and family recognise Remote's astounding success Why Marcelo might call anxiety both a ‘super problem' and superpower Why solving one problem after the next is still the main motivation for Marcelo to keep driving Remote forwards

Quiet quitting was the buzzword of 2022. And although 2023 has barely begun, yet another phrase has surfaced as a potential solution: quiet hiring. Essentially, quiet hiring leans more toward developing the talent already within an organization or seeking specialists in the form of external contractors — instead of hiring and training new personnel.    But in the wake of many organizations restructuring, downsizing or laying off teams — what could quiet hiring actually look like for your company? Could quiet hiring help you expand your talent pool? Or could quiet hiring negatively affect employee morale for your distributed workforce?   While the goal is to ensure psychological safety within your teams while continuing to meet business priorities, we at Inclusion in Progress want to help you examine the potential impact quiet hiring can have on your organization — and which strategy would work for your teams.   Here's what we will explore: What is quiet hiring in a distributed workforce? How can quiet hiring be of immediate benefit to your distributed workforce? How to manage the social and emotional aspects of hiring contractors to your team. How can you respectfully engage in quiet hiring practices for your organization?   In This Episode: [3:42] What is quiet hiring? [10:43] How does quiet hiring work within organizations? [12:57]  How to avoid burnout with a quiet hiring strategy. A craft circle may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about how to bring a dispersed workforce scattered across the globe together. But it might just be the answer you're seeking for the complex management challenges facing today's organizations. In this episode of Get Reworked, we talk to Molly Anglin, community manager at Valtech, and the firm's former chief strategy officer, Freek Bijl, about how and why they focused on communities of practice — what they call "craft circles" — to bring people together at the global consulting firm. After a period of rapid acquisition-fueled growth followed by a pandemic-forced move to remote work, craft circles became the way they wove a community out of separate global fabrics. "It was really important for us to have some kind of flexible system where it prioritized continuous learning support, finding people, sense making, and knowledge management without a really heavy handed kind of top-down approach," Molly said. Highlights of the conversation include: How Valtech created a community-based approach to management and knowledge sharing. Why historical approaches to knowledge management and intranet design are too static for the way work is done now. How leaders can support community development and sustainment. How to get employee buy-in when starting up a community of practice. Why a community-based approach to work is right for this moment Plus, co-hosts Siobhan Fagan and Mike Prokopeak talk with Molly and Freek about whether web3 is overrated or not and bartending as the way to understand human psychology. How Open Source Thinking Built a Cutting Edge Business

“It's not personal, it's business.” How many times have you heard that phrase throughout your career? For the longest time, business success has gone hand in hand with a certain degree of toughness and ambition. After all, you've got competition to worry about, revenue goals to hit, and in many cases, investors to answer to. On the turn of a dime, business can become cutthroat. You need to build walls to keep your company secrets safe — because if you don't, you lose and your competitors win. Even within organizations, there is a tendency to separate processes and people and silo data and keep people in one lane or another. But what if there was an alternative? Elastic believes in that different way, and Kim Huffman, the VP of Global IT at Elastic, is helping the team to lean into the idea that an open, supportive, distributed system is the way forward. While most businesses keep a tight lid on their business by employing an aggressive and impersonal approach, at Elastic, everything is out in the open. With a distributed workforce and an open-source mentality, Elastic is giving everyone access to the most precious resource currently available.  But scarcity creates value, so when everyone has access to something valuable, is it still worth as much as we think? When everyone can win, does anyone really win? And with so much out in the open, how is Elastic continuing to innovate in new ways and stay ahead of the curve? Find out on this episode. Main Takeaways: A Share of the Pie: With big world problems to solve, open-source and open innovation has proven to have huge potential, especially in a crisis. Embracing a collaborative approach does not only help to solve problems externally, a seed change from the us-vs-them mindset to a collaborative and open approach could promote similar behavior within companies and ultimately end in happier customers.Honesty Rules: Most people in senior leadership do not have people who hold a mirror up to them and tell them the truth. If you want the leadership team to grow and work toward the same goals, honesty with no repercussions is the route to building trust. Leaders should encourage openness and honesty and open themselves for feedback.Embed Empathy: The dog-eat-dog corporate narrative of the past has given way to the concept of empathy as the secret of business success. It is no longer being regarded as a soft skill.  Human-centric strategies that focus on people first and sharing experiences have become more important.People-Centered Resilience: Building a resilient organization or company that can adapt to a crisis is all about the people. Give people the technology tools, information and support to feel engaged and communicate openly and transparently to build trust. With that kind of culture, employees will buy in, feel personally connected, and work hard when the company sees challenging times.---Business X factors is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by Hyland. For over a decade, Hyland has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms, leading the way to help people get the information they need when and where they need it. If there is one thing 2020 made abundantly clear, it’s that the way in which workers operate will never be the same. As employees rushed to set up monitors and home offices in their new environments, businesses across the world were recognizing an inevitable reality:: that this new lifestyle was here to stay.“As this progresses, the next normal is going to be about mobility and flexibility. We've got a taste of this working from home thing that [we’ve] never had before, and they're going to want to do both, which is going to bring on new challenges.”Welcome to the “Next Normal,” where new remote working demands are establishing a host of lifestyle changes for employees, and concurrently creating a larger list of challenges for their employers. On this episode of IT Visionaries, Kim Huffman, the VP of Global IT at Elastic, opens up about distributed workforces and why Elastic believes strongly in them. But she is honest about the obstacles that work from anywhere creates when it comes to managing the endpoints of your fleet, and she discusses how IT leaders can handle the transition.Main TakeawaysKnow Your Fleet: For distributed teams, having an understanding of your endpoints is critically important. You need to always be thinking about where you are most vulnerable at those endpoints, and the points of attack they may be opening themselves up to to understand how they can be as secure as possible. Managing your endpointDrink Your Own Champagne: One of the more important operating principals  at Elastic is its ability and willingness to test its own products in-house. When you beta test your apps with your own team, it affords you the opportunity to fix bugs or breakdowns within the system prior to that product ever reaching the customer. Is This Secure? Just because you are operating on a VPN network, does not necessarily mean your network is secure. Even when you are on VPN, the user is still subjected to various forms of cyberattacks. As IT leaders, it’s important to constantly be evaluating the incoming information from your devices and managing them at their endpoints.---IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. It is only fitting that Sylvie Veilleux’s current adventure finds her wandering the backroads of the continental United States, cruising across America’s highways in search of her next stop. It’s an odyssey that’s reminiscent of her career path: From a start-up, to Apple, with a pitstop in financial services in between, before finally landing at the powerhouse that is Dropbox as its CIO, Sylvie’s career has been anything but linear.“As an individual, I can get pretty bored easily. And if there was ever a moment that I felt bored, that's when opportunities came to me. I love adventure. I love being challenged. I love being busy. And if I can combine all those things together, then why not? It's been quite fun. This last experience, where I've been working virtually in an RV, is just another place that I've done something so new and different that's kept me going.”While Dropbox is known for its file-sharing prowess, the company, like Sylvie, has expanded its horizons and its footprint in order to aid distributed workforces. On this episode of IT Visionaries, Sylvie discusses her personal journey, the work she’s doing now at Dropbox, and why Dropbox is proving that remote work is here to stay.Main TakeawaysA Remote Worker, Living in A Virtual World: The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed companies to be more agile with their workforces. Just because your team is distributed, doesn’t mean simple company values like culture and team building don’t matter. Time to Unplug: Remote workers shouldn’t be accessible 24/7. Sure, an employee has the ability to be connected to their device at all times, but that does not mean the company should exploit that. When utilizing a remote workforce, find ways to allow employees to disconnect from the company on their days off so they don’t feel required to check things such as emails, or answer calls.Ready, Player One: The ways employees and teams meet in the future will change from the way they are meeting today. CIO’s and technology leaders need to constantly be evaluating the technology they use amongst their teams. This includes taking a hard look at it if it makes the overall experience better for the employee and if it’s not, finding a better solution.---IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. There is no doubt that the way businesses operate has changed significantly throughout 2020 and while many of us had plans for and technology in place to deal with a distributed workforce, not many of us have the plans, technology or processes in place to deal with all of our workforce been distributed. Now then, is the time for us to take a step back and rethink our distributed workforce, how we approach it? To help me to explore this is this week’s podcast guest Doug Miller, CEO of Brightworks Group, a company specialising in helping enterprises of all sizes to modernise their approach to IT and help to service a distributed workforce. Join us as we discuss. • Doug’s props! • The demands of our changing world • The opportunity of distributed workforces • The power user problem! • Big issues are not necessarily technical • The digital transformation “lag” • The data portability problem • When the leadership does not embrace technology • The importance of working with specialists who can help you • Tips on rethinking your distributed workforce. Doug brought a fabulous insight to the topic and shared it with not only great enthusiasm but also with a sword! You cannot ask for more than that! His knowledge and experience shone through as he shared some fantastic tips on how to re-tool your business to not only support but to take advantage of the opportunities presented by a distributed workforce. Topics discussed in this episode: There are two defining terms to describe how MSPs can handle crises brought by the pandemic: survival and change. 06:43 We are seeing years of transformation such as cloud migration, distributed work, happen in a matter of months. 07:25 There's nothing like it when both the opportunity to do something right and make some money show up in the same place. 09:35 Working with data is crucial because being realistic about a given situation is better than blinded by optimism. 10:11 The way MSPs are making money has changed and will continue to do so in the following years. MSPs need to constantly reinvent themselves. 11:40 The assembler-builder analogy puts the prospect of AI in the MSP industry in perspective. 15:50 With the right kind of implementation, AI can bring value. It's sure to change a lot of lives. 19:27 Resources mentioned in this episode:Virtualization: Defined, A Primer for the SMB Consultant by Dave SobelCredits:The team that made this episode possible: Praveen Ramesh, who leads product marketing and growth Monica Maria, who leads the content marketing and editorial efforts Karthikeyan Ganesh, who designs everything you see on our website Kanagaraj Subramaniam, who built everything on this podcast page

In a matter of weeks, organizations that had decided to not embrace a remote workforce model, and many others that had never planned a migration, have had to move entire workforces to their homes. However, the wrong technology can represent a barrier to adoption. At the same time, working at home also includes a mix of changes for individuals, big and small. In this podcast, Fredrik Hörnkvist, Sales Director for Americas at Konftel, outlines both ideas and technological solutions that can make working at home a productive and engaging experience. Hörnkvist outlines Konftel’s five tips for working at home and then we hear about the role of technology. Clearing clutter, creating a pleasant and ordered workspace, creating an agenda, structuring one’s day are a part of the picture. Having devices that plug and play, that deliver clean and clear audio, means being able to deliver a level of professionalism to every meeting. Hörnkvist believes that our work habits may forever be changed, and that work, as a multiple venue activity might be here to stay. Ideas and strategies are offered for IT managers and the MSP communities. Visit www.konftel.com
