In this episode, host Ambur C. Smith, Esq., elevates and explores the contradictions that define America's social, political and legal status quo. To do so more consistently, she introduces the #MakeitMakeSense segment, inspired by the lyrics of "Gone" by Alex Isley and Jack Dine, and the perfect rhetorical refrain when grappling with the police killing of Casey Goodson Jr. in Columbus, Ohio, the execution of Brandon Bernard 20 years after he was sentenced to death, Tiffany Haddish's decision to decline the Grammy's half-baked invitation for her to host this year's award show and Electoral College. In the usual My Two Cents segment, Ambur will read and respond to excerpts of Biden's plans for Black America, the African Diaspora and Women. In doing so, she hopes to provide a legitimate rubric by which to judge the incoming Administration. Follow Ambur on Instagram @burspeaks for announcements regarding the next episode.

The recent execution of Brandon Bernard has re-sparked an age-old conversation on the validity of capital punishment in America. The US is one of the only remaining developed countries that has not abolished the death penalty as a form of punishment. Should the government be allowed to execute its own people within the justice system in place today? Thank you Miriam for joining us on this episode! We love you! Content warning: suicidal ideation and death.Isaac's out for surgery this week (don't worry, he's fine), but we brought in a great friend to sub for him: Chris Hoke, a gang pastor, jail chaplain, and the founder of Underground Ministries. He's also an incredibly engaging writer, and Bryan gives a glowing endorsement for his book “Wanted.” We talk about how Chris learned about the bible and his community in some rough Oakland neighborhoods; going to jail to learn how to read the bible in context; how modern Christianity has largely forgotten the oppressed and marginalized folks that Jesus helped; Carrie fighting the good fight down in Texas; butting up against evangelical hypocrisy; (almost) getting cussed out by a nun; and we get INTO a conversation about the existential morality and theology surround the death penalty and mass incarceration, a conversation that has had renewed fervor after the murders of Brandon Bernard and Alfred Bourgeois.Resources:Chris-hoke.comUnderground MinistriesFacebook: facebook.com/chris.hoke.988Twitter: @ChrisHoker"The Fall of the Prison: Biblical Perspectives on Prison Abolition" by Lee GriffithUntil We Get Canceled is a Crate Original from Crate Media

The people of the state of Georgia think elections are so nice they want to do them twice. So on January 5th, there will be a runoff election for 2 US Senate seats. These two elections determine who will control the Senate. The work that led to this moment can not be understated. Organizations have been registering voters since at least 2016 for a possible outcome such as this. Here at Unlearn Relearn, we are not fans of any of the candidates on either side. The two Democrats don't stand for our values and won't fight for real change. We still must vote them in because the alternative is a Senate, led by the truly awful Mitch McConnell, that does nothing but harm. In this episode we talk about the history of Georgia Elections, the significance of this race, and what we can do to affect positive change going forward. We also say the names of our fallen this week, Brandon Bernard and William Howard Green AND we highlight two activists doing great work in the space of electoral politics, Nina Turner and Sonia Renee Taylor, A teacher, poet and writer dedicated to promoting the ideas of radical self-love and liberation. The holiday season brings so many different challenges. Please take time to take care of yourself. Be gentle and kind. Support our activists in any way you see fit.
