Jeff Blair is joined by Kansas City Royals TV analyst Rex Hudler (2:55) to get his thoughts on the benefits of being able to play multiple position like Andrés Giménez filling in for Bo Bichette at shortstop, previews the weekend series against the Blue Jays, the lack of consistency from the Royals' offence, and optimism for the team's pitching staff after this season. Then, Blue Jays radio analyst and former MLB pitcher Chris Leroux stops by in-studio (29:55) to chat about his top concerns as we near the last week of the regular season, trust in Braydon Fisher, and Max Scherzer post-season projections. The Phillies could not sweep the Dodgers out in Los Angeles but after the week they've had no one seemed to mind. But also the playoff rotation for the Phillies seems to have been released and with Walker Buehler not listed as a potential starter could he make an impact out the bullpen?
Sal dove into the Yankees' recent wins, focusing on their Jekyll-and-Hyde offensive performance and the glaring issues with their pitching staff. He expressed frustration with the team's inconsistency, noting how they scored 20 runs in two games after being shut out the night before. While giving credit to the bullpen for bailing out a shaky start from Luis Gil, Sal emphasized that one bad pitching performance can sink an entire postseason run. He warned that despite the offensive outburst, the Yankees' starting pitching problems and the looming wild card matchup against dangerous teams like Seattle and Boston are serious concerns as they head toward the playoffs.
Blake Snell continued the Los Angeles Dodgers' stretch of dominant starting pitching, hurling seven scoreless innings after convincing manager Dave Roberts to let him get one last out. The LA offense showed up again, putting up four runs against a tough Jesus Luzardo and tacking on another insurance run against the Philly bullpen, and the Dodgers salvage a game in the series with the Phillies. Oh yeah, and Shohei Ohtani homered again, giving him 51 on on the season. Oh yeah, and Alex Vesia and Tanner Scott both threw scoreless innings in relief. Just an overall, all-around, good team win. Tube in all season long! Leave a voicemail or text the Friend of the Show hotline!
Tyler Wells has looked great in his first few outings of 2025, but is he better suited for the back end of the Orioles bullpen? Mike Bordick explained why he would lean on Wells as a reliever moving forward.
In the second hour, Mike Mulligan and David Haugh pondered how the Cubs will use rookie right-hander Cade Horton in a wild-card series. Which game should he start? Is there any chance he pitches out of the bullpen? After that, Dan Wiederer of The Athletic joined the show to share his takeaways from the Bears' 52-21 loss to the Lions and to look ahead to their matchup against the Cowboys this Sunday.
Ben & Woods kick off the 7am hour talking about the upcoming MLB playoffs, and if the Padres should employ a bullpen game for one of their 3 potential wildcard games? Then we get to "Don't (And DO) Do This" before Benny lists his top 2 concerns, at least offensively, when it comes to the Padres. Does Woodsy agree with him? Listen here!

Bill Krueger joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about the Mariners bullpen of late, Josh Naylor’s future contract plus offseason decision ahead, and the home record.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mitch Keller had the Nats on lockdown—five scoreless through 5 on just 62 pitches—before he was lifted and the bullpen let it slip, turning a 3–0 lead into a 6–5 loss. Doug and DiNardo break down the decision to pull Keller, the ensuing relief carousel (and why “just get outs” wasn't the plan), and a bizarre base-running gaffe at the plate that erased the tying run. We hit the late push too: Nick Yorke's pinch-hit AB, Joey Bart's RBI knock for Henry Davis, and how a passed ball + non-competitive pitch compounded the damage. Offensively, there were real positives—Jared Triolo (2 hits), Spencer Horowitz (2 hits with a homer), Nick Gonzales (2-for-4), Bryan Reynolds RBI—while Andrew McCutchen's 0-for-4 and apparent back issue are something to monitor. Plus: what this says about Don Kelly's in-game leash, the bullpen's volatility (Sisk/Nicolas, etc.), and the bigger roster-building conversation. They take your calls and texts, and get right to the start from Chris Bassitt - was he dealing with something after coming out of the game following five innings of one-run ball? They also discuss the terrific work from the bullpen - how much more do you need to see from the bullpen before entirely coming around on them as a group? Plus, they get into the offence putting up six runs, including a three-for-three night for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with two walks.
