Welcome back to another episode of the Multifam Collective! Today, we are talking about the impact of AI and centralization on business hierarchy. Imagine a future where the traditional business structure is entirely reimagined. This isn't just a slight shift—it's a monumental change we haven't seen in decades. AI is set to revolutionize how we govern our businesses, replacing the old command-and-control hierarchies designed for manufacturing efficiency. The new wave will favor flatter organizations, minimizing human touch where possible to cut costs and streamline processes without sacrificing the consumer or team member experience. Picture billion-dollar companies run by just a handful of people leveraging technology to its fullest potential. How do you think this shift will shape the future of your business? Let's discuss it!

Dave Bookbinder delves into the details with Jim Gitney, CEO of Group 50 Consulting and author of The Business - Hierarchy Of Needs® – Transforming Strategy Into Outcomes. Jim Gitney has accumulated more than 45 years of practical experience in the corporate world and as the CEO of Group50® Consulting. He gained his expertise working with notable companies such as GE, Stanley Black & Decker, Sunbeam, and over 200 other companies ranging from startups to large publicly traded corporations during his 18 years of consultancy. Throughout his entire career, he has held leadership positions, including serving on boards of directors and managing various functional organizations such as manufacturing, marketing, engineering, and quality. During his extensive experience, Gitney consistently observed that a lack of strategic alignment and agreement within organizations, along with poorly executed technology and business processes, were the underlying causes of failed strategies. In 2013, he developed the Business Hierarchy of Needs® as a framework for designing and implementing successful strategies. Strategy Realized – The Business Hierarchy of Needs® serves as his comprehensive guide, presenting a step-by-step process for transforming strategy into tangible results, drawing upon his key learnings from the past 45 years.  In this episode we're discussing why identifying an organizations most important goal is critical to success, how to think about organizational design, managing change and technology, developing and implementing strategy through engagement, and more! About the Host: Dave Bookbinder is the person that clients reach out to when they need to know what their most important assets are worth. He's a corporate finance executive with a focus on business and intellectual property valuation. Known as a collaborative adviser, Dave has served thousands of client companies of all sizes and industries.    Dave is the author of two #1 best-selling books about the impact of human capital (PEOPLE!) on the valuation of a business enterprise called The NEW ROI: Return On Individuals & The NEW ROI: Going Behind The Numbers.    He's on a mission to change the conversation about how the accounting world recognizes the value of people's contributions to a business enterprise, and to quantify what every CEO on the planet claims: “Our people are this company's most valuable asset.”

Mike Michalowicz delivers a powerful message that entrepreneurs and business development professionals need to hear. Learn some incredible hacks you can use right now to deepen your business relationships, identify exactly what you should be working on to make the greatest impact, and learn how to multiply your best clients and grow your book of business exponentially.   Mo asks Mike Michalowicz: Why do you have to start with sales? Sales create cash for a business. We usually start a business to create financial freedom, and to get there we need sales, but sales are not sufficient in themselves. They are the foundation to the Business Hierarchy of Needs. If you realize and feel that your offering is superior to your competitor's, then you have an obligation to sell it. If your prospect goes with the competitor, they are getting an inferior offering. Making your clients aware of your offer and putting it in front of them is the best way to serve them. Not selling your offering is doing them a disservice. Just like people, businesses have a hierarchy of needs as well. Foundationally, we need sales because it creates cash. Once we've got sales we need to extract that cash to bring about stability, also known as profit. Once you have that addressed, you need to create efficiency and order. The level above that is impact, and it's where your business goes from being about transactions to becoming about transformation. The final level is legacy, which is where the work you are doing is so important that it must continue for generations. The hierarchy functions like a pyramid, where if you want to grow, you need to expand the sales base.   Mo asks Mike Michalowicz: What's the number one thing people can do to get more yeses? The most powerful concept is client cloning. We need to focus on our best clients and identify what we know about them. Then you develop an avatar around those attributes and go to where those people congregate. As the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together. We have to concentrate our efforts on the areas and mediums where our best clients are so we can get in front of them. Once you begin cloning your best clients, it also brings a new level of efficiency to your business. You work with similar clients in similar situations, and the resolution becomes consistently the same, which elevates your ability to scale. People are looking to know, like, and trust you, and selling right off the bat is not the best approach. Educational marketing is the most effective method to build the rapport you need to land clients and once they are ready to make a decision on someone to do it for them they will pick you. When you have people that are intrigued and interested in what you do, have a clear, concise and reasonable next step for them to do.   Mo asks Mike Michalowicz: How can we use your framework to deepen our most important business relationships? The easiest way to connect with your client is to learn the language that they use. Ask your best clients what you are doing right, and they will tell you what they judge you on. The thing you do right is actually the thing you need to improve most to create an extraordinary relationship. Deepen your relationships by doing the right thing better. Your clients will tell you exactly what they need if you ask them. You can ask what you're doing wrong, but you're not going to get the truth if there's a potential confrontation. Instead, ask what's wrong with your industry. You'll be surprised by what you hear. Ask your clients about what other vendors they depend on too, and then go and deepen those relationships. Tap into the vendor wealth that surrounds your clients.   Mo asks Mike Michalowicz: How do we hack our habits so we keep evolving and getting better? The first thing you do in the day is the most impactful. Sadly, most people open their email first which then dictates their behavior. You need to time block the first part of your morning to focus on your most important work. Don't do anything like email which can divert you from the path. Any time you want to fix or improve a single thing, you need to focus on it exclusively each day until that one project is done. Use the momentum effect to your advantage. It's actually the discipline of not doing that will actually result in more effective action. Even a 15-minute block of time at the very beginning of your day will yield positive results and make it easier to get the momentum going. If you want to strengthen a chain, focus on the weakest link. If you fix that, the strength of the whole chain gets elevated and you can focus on the next weak link. We can be so much more efficient if we just focus on one thing at a time.   Mo shares his insights from the habits of Mike Michalowicz. There is the evolution of a business that can be broken down. You don't want to focus on the higher level elements until addressing the foundations. This is where the Business Hierarchy of Needs comes in. The foundation of any business that's service based is sales. You have to get good at business development, if you don't you will stagnate and fall back. Once you start getting money in the door, you can start thinking about profit and efficiency. Then the next step is making the biggest impact on the people you serve that you can. You can then focus on the legacy of the business so that you can leave the world in a better state than you found it in. Business development is the foundation, but it's also intertwined with each level and constantly revisited. The three questions for clients is a great framework for identifying how you can deepen your relationship with them. “What am I doing right?”, “What's wrong with our industry?”, and “What other vendors/partners do you depend on?”. By systematizing those three questions you have an excellent process for identifying where to focus on next. Focus on one project at a time, even if you have multiple projects you're working on over a given time period. It can play off your grand overarching strategy in the long term, but you have to pull those big things down to one specific task and focus on that to completion.     Mentioned in this Episode: GrowBIGPlaybook.com fixthisnext.com

On this episode of The Friday Habit, Ben summarizes the main points of one of his favorite books: “Fix This Next” by Mike Michalowicz. As we all learned in that one college psychology class, humans have needs in life that fall into 5 basic categories as defined by Maslow, from most basic to most complex: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Maslow explained that certain needs must take priority over others as we go through life and it is important to prioritize the most basic before moving up the hierarchy.Michalowicz believes that a similar concept can be applied to businesses, and while two hierarchies might seem like a lot to place into the already-full hands of entrepreneurs, hopefully you will find that understanding the different levels will simplify things for you. He defines the business hierarchy of needs, from most basic to most complex as: sales – creation of cash, profit – creation of stability, order – creation of efficiency, impact – creation of transformation, and legacy – creation of permanence. In “Fix This Next”, Michalowicz outlines 5 questions for entrepreneurs to ask themselves about their businesses pertaining to each level of the hierarchy, providing a framework for areas to focus on before moving on to the next level. By asking yourself these 25 questions, you should be able to easily identify gaps and problems that need to be addressed and establish principles that will guide your actions moving forward. This is a great read for anyone who has built their own business or brand and anyone who wants to in the future, but this book does not fully serve its purpose if you don't take action after reading it. Links:“Fix This Next” book: https://www.amazon.com/Fix-This-Next-Change-Business/dp/0593084411“Fix This Next” Book Website: https://fixthisnext.com/Free Resources mentioned: https://s3.amazonaws.com/MikeMichalowicz/FTN/FTN-Graphics-Charts.pdf Connect with us:https://www.thefridayhabit.com/thefridayhabit@knapsackcreative.com https://www.instagram.com/benjaminmanleyhttp://www.benjaminmanley.com/ https://www.brandvivamedia.com/https://www.facebook.com/Marklab2https://www.linkedin.com/in/marklab2/

We have the great pleasure of interviewing another amazing guest on today's podcast! We're having a conversation with Mike Michalowicz, and he is very well-known everywhere! Mike started three different million-dollar businesses before he turned thirty-five, and he has written several books, including Profit First, Clockwork, The Pumpkin Plan, and his most recent book, Fix This Next: Make the Vital Change That Will Level Up Your Business. He is joining us today talk about his journey, and to discuss what he has learned along the way, including his successes and his failures, the principles of Profit First, his Business Hierarchy of Needs, what it takes to be an entrepreneur and the one thing that all business owners need to bear in mind when testing out a new idea.  How Mike became an entrepreneur At first, Mike never really wanted to be an entrepreneur. He graduated from college with the idea of landing his one dream job, but unfortunately, that didn't work out. After failing the interview, he returned home and started working at a computer store. It was while working there that he decided that he wanted to be the guy sitting in the back of the business, counting all the money and smoking cigars. And that motivated him to start a business of his own. The reality of business He started a business, only to discover that business owners are mostly stressed and panicked with everything that is going on. He had committed himself to entrepreneurship, however, and even though it all seemed terrifying in the beginning, he persevered. Leveraging and amplifying his successes  Due to his commitment to becoming an entrepreneur, Mike started appreciating the journey, and he began leveraging all his business successes. Selling his business  As a result of all his success, he was able to build his company and sell it. He started another company soon after that, which he later sold to a Fortune 500 company. His darkest journey In his early thirties, Mike was arrogant and ignorant and thought he knew everything. And he spent lots of money on beautiful houses and expensive cars.  The darkest part of his journey occurred when he became an angel investor, and when he realized that he was no good at it. He was advised by his accountant to declare bankruptcy, but he did not do that because he felt that it was his responsibility, and not that of his creditors, to dig himself out of all the mistakes he had made. As a result, he ended up losing everything. The turning point Mike went home to tell his family that he had lost everything, including their house. Upon hearing what had happened, his nine-year-old daughter stood up, ran to her bedroom, and returned with her piggy-bank in her hands. She told Mike that since he was no longer able to provide for the family, she would become the provider.  Mike will never forget that moment because it was the turning point for him. It took him about a year-and-a-half to two years after that to get back into the swing of things.  Why people become entrepreneurs That experience was a wake-up call for Mike, and it humbled him. It also made him realize that he had shirked the most important responsibilities of entrepreneurship, which are to gain financial and personal freedom and to be a provider. Re-learning entrepreneurship Mike committed to becoming a provider for his family. To do that, he realized that he needed to figure out a viable solution, and he also had to re-learn entrepreneurship.  Mike initially started writing for himself Mike got advised to keep a journal to vent the painful emotions he was feeling. That brought him clarity, so he continued doing it for some time. Then he started writing books.  Writing books to simplify entrepreneurship It was through his experiences of the highs and the lows of running a business that Mike came to understand that he needed to simplify entrepreneurship. He initially wrote books for himself because he needed the kind of information that he was writing about. He also wanted to take the opportunity to help others by simplifying the entrepreneurial journey and supporting people in their business endeavors.   Links and resources: You can get free chapter downloads for all of Mike's books. We Warriors often try to fix everything that's going awry in our business all at once. But we often don't notice that there's one specific thing that we keep banging our heads up against. Most of the time there is one particular core issue that needs to be fixed before anything else can and should be addressed. And everyone knows, I love a good system.   So, rather than bouncing around trying to fix things based on emotions, what we need is a reliable system to help us figure out what it is that truly needs to be fixed next in our business. Entrepreneurs might fear the term “going under” but sometimes all that is is taking a deep dive into your business' pyramid of needs and tightening up those base levels before resurfacing at the top.  To help identify our most vital needs I've brought back my good friend and one of my favorite authors, Mike Michalowicz.  Mike is the author of Profit First, Clockwork, Surge, The Pumpkin Plan, and his newest release Fix This Next. By his 35th birthday, Mike had founded and sold two companies - one to private equity and another to a Fortune 500. Today he is running his third multi-million dollar venture, Profit First Professionals. Mike is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal and the former business makeover specialist on MSNBC. Over the years, Mike has traveled the globe speaking with thousands of entrepreneurs, and is here today to share the best of what he has learned. THE JOKING WARRIOR “The biggest problem entrepreneurs have is that they don't know what their biggest problem is.” - Mike Michalowicz Highlights - If we want to lead, we have to differentiate. In times of crisis, many entrepreneurs fall into a “survival trap.”  The Business Hierarchy of Needs are: Sales, Profit, Order, Impact, Legacy. We are not biologically wired into our business but we act like we are. In times of crisis it is imperative to look forward rather than backwards.  Lifestyle Congruence: figure out the lifestyle of the shareholders and then figure out what the sales need to be to fit that lifestyle.  It's not the age of the business; it's the stage of the business. Entrepre-jones' lifestyle is when you think you have to be performing at the level of everybody else all the time.  We often overlook the exact thing we keep banging our heads up against. Mike Michalowicz is a best-selling author, speaker, multi-millionaire business owner and the man that Simon Sinek calls “the top contender for the patron saint of entrepreneurs”  However, his work today came as a result of learning some crucial business and life lessons after losing everything he'd made from selling two companies. Since then Mike has devoted his life to finding better ways for himself and other entrepreneurs to grow healthy, strong companies.  He is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal and business makeover specialist on MSNBC. Mike is a popular main stage keynote speaker on innovative entrepreneurial topics.  One of his most popular books and systems is Profit First, which is used by hundreds of thousands of companies across the globe to drive profit. He has written many others and his latest book, ‘Fix This Next', is accidentally, but perfectly timed to help many business owners suffering as a result of the crisis.  In this show, I'm getting the low down from Mike on many things that will help you as a speaker and business owner to move forward despite the challenges that you are facing on the journey.  I hope you enjoy the show. What we talk about:     Why Mike has dedicated his life to investigating the journey of successful entrepreneurship.      The origin of Profit First as a way of managing cash in your business.     Why traditional accounting methods don't work for entrepreneurs.      How ‘Profit First' works.      The amazing results it has had for entrepreneurs and businesses in sustaining profitability.     The ‘Survival Trap' exercise that you can run for your business.     Why Mike developed the ‘Business Hierarchy of Needs' to identify the right actions for your business if you're feeling overwhelmed or facing a crisis in your business.     The story of Cottonwood Coffee and how they used the business hierarchy of needs.     How speaking fits into what Mike does.     Why you should give people actionable content when you're speaking.     The ‘One Step Back' technique and how you can use it to pivot.     Why you shouldn't give until it hurts and what you do should always have a sales foundation.     How and why Mike uses stories and humour in his talks.     The way that Mike overcame his public speaking anxiety.     Why you should listen to people's wallets, rather than their words.
