The Lexington Legends baseball team has seen its share of ups and downs – including a head-scratching name change (anybody remember the Counter Clocks?) But now as the city gets ready to celebrate 25 seasons of professional baseball, WUKY's Saving Stories has this look back at how it all began. Nunn Center for Oral History director Dr. Doug Boyd shares audio from a 2019 interview with Alan Stein, who along with other prominent members of the community, led an effort to bring minor league baseball to Lexington. In this portion of the conversation Stein recalls a literal 11th hour curveball his group had to handle before presenting its best case to an MLB franchise expansion committee. It's a story you have to hear to believe.

Eric Harshman has one of the most diverse resumes in the turf industry. He spent 12 years in the National Guard, then earned degrees in both graphic design and sports marketing, until finally marrying into a family golf course where he got bit by the turf bug. He went on to work for Walter Pritchett at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville, KY. Eric then found his way to LSU as an assistant sports turf manager. Being an avid baseball fan, with a sport marketing degree, he wanted to try a stint with the Lexington Legends, a professional minor league team. The work was great, but the hours were not very accommodating for a family man with children. Eric has now found a home as the Head Grounds Manager at Transylvania University in Lexington KY. The life of a grounds manager at a major university is not an easy one, especially with a small staff, but it has been a very enjoyable one for Eric. The University no longer has a football team, but he is responsible for the entire campus and all the sports they do have. He shares with us what it takes to manage such a large operation and how the transition has been from golf to sports turf and finally to the manager of a large university. Eric has a great reputation in the industry and his story is enjoyable for anyone who loves the turf industry.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

Emma Tiedemann, the Voice of the Portland Sea Dogs (Class AA; Eastern League), joins Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard to preview the 2022 MiLB season, discuss rule experiments and discuss Texas Leaguers and marlins.Today marks the beginning of the 2022 Minor League Baseball season, as the industry takes another major step toward normalcy. While there are COVID-19 protocols in place still in place throughout the industry, ballparks will be operating at full capacity. Topics discussed in this podcast:· Those outside the baseball world may take for granted the working conditions in 2021, when broadcasters began the season working remotely off a video feed due to COVID-19 concerns, eventually making their way back to broadcast booths and road trips. Emma and Jesse discuss MiLB play in April, dealing with snow, nor'easters and frozen tarps.· A continuing issue in Minor League ball: rule experiments mandated by Major League Baseball. Some of the rule experiments are good (larger bases and pitch clocks), some up for debate (a ban on shifts). Jesse tells of players moving from the Single-A Cal League—where the clock was used—to the High-A Midwest League—where the clock was not mandated—and playing at the same pace, leading to quicker games. No one likes the idea of banning the infield shift, and the three agree that potentially mandating positioning for outfielders is a very bad idea.· Original league names are back, causing great rejoicing in the chat. MiLB history Is restored!· Other innovations discussed: robo-mowers, cashless ballparks, additional rule experiments at the MLB Partner Leagues, the evolution of ballpark tech (including facial recognition and videoboards everywhere), in-seat ordering for food/drink and concessions, ballpark upgrades mandated by MLB (including upgraded clubhouses and dedicated changing spaces for female coaches and umpires), better ballpark lighting (including underrated up-lighting), and wireless communications on the defensive side of the game.· Today's baseball lingo from Emma: Texas Leaguer, a looping fly ball that lands between infielders and outfielders for a hit. That leads to a discussion of a 1959 promotional book from Phillies Blunts covering baseball terms, including variations of Texas Leaguer like seagulls (leading to Dave Winfield references), dying swans, bleeders and banjo hits.· Today's baseball lingo by Jesse: marlin. In scouting circles, a marlin is a story told when the inevitable gabfest begins in the scouts seating at the ballpark. Emma's marlin: When calling a game in Alaska, a moose strolled by, past the outfield fence—something you'd only see in Alaska.Emma Tiedemann has been a broadcaster since she was 15, launching her career as the Voice of the Mat-Su Miners in the summer-collegiate Alaska Baseball League and making stops at broadcast booths for the Medford Rogues, St. Paul Saints and Lexington Legends before debuting in 2021 with the Sea Dogs. Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is editor of Ballpark Digest and founder/publisher at August Publications.

Like many baseball fans growing up in Northern Kentucky, Andrew was influenced by Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall calling Cincinnati Reds games on the radio. Andrew got his start working in baseball at the tender age of 14 in the summer of 2005 when he started to cover the Florence Freedom of the independent Frontier League for the OurSports Central (https://www.oursportscentral.com) website. Andrew gives credit and thanks to Freedom manager at the time Jamie Keefe along with his staff especially pitching coach Chris Hook (http://m.mlb.com/mil/roster/coach/116123/chris-hook) and bench coach John Christman for allowing him the opportunity to come into the coach’s office and learn about the game. Brady helped mentor Andrew in the Freedom press box but not without some good-natured ribbing that sometimes might have bordered on hazing. Brady along with play-by-play announcer Jeff Johnson and press box workers Mitch Morrison, Aaron Zupka and Rob Ellington took Andrew under their wing thought the course of that summer and beyond. In 2006, Andrew becomes part of the game day staff for the Freedom while also still writing for OurSports Central. As time goes on, Andrew is finally getting a chance to do some broadcasting, in small dosages, working with both the radio voice of the Freedom Roger Redmon. Though the relationships made working with the Freedom, Andrew is hired by Mike Anderson to work in the sports information department at Northern Kentucky University (https://nkunorse.com) upon enrolling into college. This gives Andrew the opportunity to call soccer games for NKU as a freshman. This is also where Andrew begins to work with John Asalon calling NKU baseball games. Andrew starts doing middle innings for Norse games all the while being critiqued by “Johnny A.” Andrew also recalls his first solo broadcast job was calling high school basketball games for his alma matter Bishop Brossart. Local legend Dave Schabell who founded the website bmustangs.com (http://bmustangs.com) gives Andrew a chance to call games for the Mustangs. As a recent college graduate Andrew begins to work as the radio play-by-play announcer and later on the TV side for the NKU women’s basketball program. He credits head coach Dawn Plitzuweit (@CoachDawnP) and her assistant coach Lynn Plett (https://gomountainlions.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/lynn-plett/485) for being instrumental in his development during this time. His professional baseball career is starting to get off the ground as well and he begins that journey as an intern for two seasons with the Lexington Legends (https://www.milb.com/lexington/). The Legends were at the time Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros and Andrew is working under local broadcasting legend Keith Elkins. Also, during this process Andrew begins to shadow Louisville Bats (https://www.milb.com/louisville/) lead play-by-play announcer Jim Kelch (@KelchJim). This spawned a mentorship that was very instrumental in Andrew’s development as a young up-an-coming broadcaster. Andrew’s first full-time job in broadcasting was with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barrie RailRaiders (https://www.milb.com/scranton-wb/) in 2013. The RailRaiders are the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. Andrew talks about the tough love he received from his boss John Sadak (@johnsadak). Both Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter spent a significant amount of time in Scranton doing injury-rehab assignments and both were very good to Andrew. He has some great stories about each one proving they were big stars but still were also nice to the people that were still working their way up the ladder. After a brief stop in Bowling Green, Kentucky working for the Hot Rods (https://www.milb.com/bowling-green) of the Tampa Bay organization, Andrew moves on to his current location. For the last six years he has worked for the Indianapolis Indians (https://www.milb.com/indianapolis) in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Andrew talks about working under the dean of International League broadcasters Howard Kellman (@HowardKellman). We wrap up the conversation talking about Andrew having the call for NKU men’s basketball qualifying for its first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament by virtue of winning the Horizon League tournament. Our second Canadian guest comes aboard the podcast this week as Chris Creamer, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of SportsLogos.net joined the the show to tell the story of one of the most influential sports logo and uniform sites on the Internet. The site was started in 1999 when Chris was only 14 years old and has survived throughout his high school, college years, attacks from hackers and even the Web 2.0 era. Chris and I nerd out about being some of the older tech guys on the web in our 30s and mixing that with our love of both tech and sports. Chris tells a few stories about the growth of the website, its early rebellious nature, the infamous forums and the sites move from archiving sports logos to daily content and news. We also discuss breaking new logo stories and Chris has been able to develop relationships within the media and sports executive community to get first-hand access to new logo information. Lastly, what kind of episode would it be if we didn't discuss a few favorite logos, uniforms and team branding.
