Jennifer and Pumps missed this guest so much they had to bring him back a second time. Jared Freid joins the girls for a full on sh*t-talking session, from long-winded Instagram captions to CYA photo sessions on bachelor parties. Jennifer does a dramatic reading of a fantastic one star review and Pumps claims that while she *is* receiving mail from AARP (because she's much much older than Jennifer) she is standing strong and refusing to give in to it. I think we can all agree that marriage is hard. It is also awesome. But it does not come without intentional work. It’s easy to glorify other people's' marriages and assume they “have it all” when that is never actually the case. I recently read Michelle Obama’s book, Becoming. Then I went as saw her speak here in Seattle. In both instances, I was touched by the way she talks about marriage and essentially the “secrets” of her marriage. She is married to a dreamer, while she is admittedly much more pragmatic. She is married to someone who wants to serve all the people, while she wants to prioritize serving her family and those closest to her. She is married to someone who can’t manage his time to save his life, while she loves structure and schedules and routine (and being on time for it all)! In reading Michelle’s book and hearing her talk, I was able to curate four secrets to a successful marriage that I think will help all the rest of us: Set clear boundaries and expectations Assume your partners have the best intentions Assume your partner can actually do the things they say they can Shamelessly build, own, and grow your own identity Listen in for a deep dive on these concepts around marriage (and to learn how to see your partners' most annoying characteristics as gifts)! AND make sure to stick around for the end when we talk about asking for support rather than permission. This is a game changer in how you can maintain your identity as well as a high level of respect and equity in your marriage. When I first started taking yoga classes from Jason many years ago, I was struck by his voice. He has a voice that draws you in. It's soothing and encouraging. He speaks in a measured, comfortable pace. And he's a clear, succinct communicator. In essence, he's a natural when it comes to verbal communication. This week, I ask Jason to share how he's developed this skill set. And, although this episode is specifically geared toward yoga teachers, the ideas we here apply to everyone. We all have times when clear verbal communication is vital -- in client meetings, with our loved ones, during presentations -- and some of us struggle with it more than others. My hope is that you'll gain confidence and clarity from this episode. We talk about:* Why verbal communication might be the most important skill for yoga teachers* Using each class you teach as a practice for personal growth in the area of verbal communication* The struggles we (Jason and Andrea) have when it comes to speaking in front of a group* How choosing one or two takeaways for your students can dramatically improve your teachingShow notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcasts/episode100SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORS1. For two years, Craig Elbert was the Vice President of Marketing at Bonobos, and now he runs a vitamin company. So, what's the connection between great trousers and daily vitamins? Besides Craig, it's the category of Vertical Commerce Brand. Craig experienced first hand the overwhelming lack of clarity in vitamin and supplement stores. With his background at Bonobos, he saw this as an opportunity to use the direct-to-consumer, VCB model to build a brand that people loved. In this episode of Well Made, Stephan talks to Craig about and the first few months of launching of Care/Of and how he's brought his marketing experience to the world of vitamins.
