El ciclista francés, Axel Carion, que lleva explorando el mundo pedaleando desde el 2011, acaba de publicar el libro 'Le Monde à vélo. Voyages extraordinaires en bikepacking' (Ediciones Casa, 2024), donde relata sus aventuras por todos los continentes, desde las áridas montañas del desierto marroquí hasta las vertiginosas cumbres de Sudamérica. Lleva recorridos casi 200.000 kilómetros. En este programa, nos explica también su último viaje por los salares bolivianos.  Los chaskis eran mensajeros del imperio Inca que, a pie, hacían kilómetros para transportar paquetes y mensajes por todo el territorio bajo la protección del emperador. Carion dice, que comparado con las gestas de los chaskis, "su bicicleta parece más una limusina". "Las condiciones de los pueblos de allá desde hace milenios son muy duras, y para mí es una forma de respeto y privilegio seguir el camino de los Incas", nos cuenta.  Carion acaba de regresar de Bolivia donde ha recorrido mil kilómetros de sal y arena durante diez días. Es su cuarta vez en el altiplano, pero es la primera vez que conecta La Paz, el Parque Natural de Sajama, a 6.500 metros de altura y el volcán de Licancabur, en la frontera con Chile. Un recorrido muy duro en el que hay que tener en cuenta la falta de oxígeno y un terreno inhóspito. "Es como tener una camioneta que anda con el 40% o el 50% de potencia menos, es muy duro tanto físico como mental, hay que prepararse, yo lo hice en los Alpes franceses, y también haciendo tests en laboratorios para ver si uno tiene el soroche, que es el mal de altura", nos explica.El recorrido es básicamente desierto, sal, arena y barro y esto ralentiza forzosamente la bicicleta, todo un reto para una expedición que ha hecho con su compañero Greg, que no es ciclista profesional. "Lo hicimos con una bicicleta de montaña, con llantas muy largas y con mucho peso, mucho material, para poder sobrevivir", cuenta. Todo un desafío al que se ha unido un cambio de temperatura que ha variado de -10 a 40 grados centígrados. Pero para Axel Carion, no hay límites ni fronteras. A pesar de haber sido papá hace poco, Carion no renuncia a explorar y descubrir nuevos lugares en bicicleta. "Es como mi droga personal", confiesa. "Es una droga muy humana porque se producen encuentros inolvidables", agrega. Unos encuentros que acaba de plasmar en el libro 'Le Monde à vélo. Voyages extraordinaires en bikepacking', que se podría traducir en español como 'El Mundo en bicicleta. Viajes extraordinarios en bikepacking'. Expediciones a diez países en 14 años con fotografías de David Styv y relatos del propio Carion. "Tenemos fotos increíbles de cada uno de los viajes y yo suelo escribir cada vez que me voy a una exploración", afirma. Elle remporte le championnat du monde d'ultracyclisme BikingMan en dominant les hommes au classement général. Sur près de 1 000 participants, Laurianne Plaçais remporte le titre du BikingMan devant les hommes, après avoir terminé 4 épreuves en 2023 : - Portugal (4ᵉ place) - France (1ʳᵉ place) - Euskadi (2ᵉplace) - Maroc (2ᵉplace) Elle devient Elle devient la première femme à s'emparer du titre du BikingMan depuis la création du championnat d'ultracyclisme grâce à son podium sur l'étape finale qui s'est terminée aujourd'hui au Maroc.

Dans cet épisode 70, Matthieu reçoit Axel Carion, l'organisateur du circuit d'épreuves longue distance Bikingman. Axel Carion est un jeune homme très occupé qui possède plusieurs casquettes. Il est avant tout un cycliste amoureux d'aventures et de longues distances à vélo, mais aussi un explorateur français qui arpente à vélo les tracés les plus vertigineux du globe depuis 2011.  En 2015, il avait notamment traversé la Cordillère des Andes, en reliant Ushuaïa (Argentine) depuis Carthagène (Colombie), soit 13.500 km et 154.000 m de dénivelé positif, en 249 jours. En 2016, il crée le premier championnat de courses d'ultracyclisme, appelé BikingMan.  Au fur et à mesure des années, son approche passionnée et professionnelle lui a permis de créer un calendrier de 9 épreuves situées dans le monde entier, sur des distances variant entre 500 et 1 000 kms, en route et en gravel. Le 1er mai, le Bikingman Portugal donnera le coup d'envoi de la saison 2023. Axel Carion nous présente cette 5ème édition et nous dévoile aussi ses dernières aventures à vélo.

En esta edición les proponemos descubrir las aventuras de un explorador, un explorador del siglo XXI que acaba de recorrer 1.000 kilómetros en bicicleta donde nace la cordillera de los Andes, en Venezuela. Se trata del ciclista francés Axel Carion, fundador del campeonato de ultraciclismo Bikingman. Originario de Chartres, a unos 100 kilómetros de París, hace más de una década que Axel Carion practica el ciclismo de larga distancia y de exploración. Lo que le ha llevado a recorrer miles y miles de kilómetros por Europa Central, los Balcanes o el Atlas marroquí. Su encuentro con los Andes se produjo en 2015 cuando recorrió en bicicleta 13.500 kilómetros desde Cartagena (Colombia) hasta Ushuaia (Argentina). “El ultraciclismo es un modo de andar en bicicleta larga distancia, al menos 200 km al día y el bikepacking es traer maletas livianas en la bicicleta con comida, bebida y ropa para andar sin asistencia”, nos explica Carion. A partir de la experiencia andina, el ciclista creó en 2016 el Bikingman, el primer campeonato de carrera de ultraciclismo en autonomía total. Un campeonato que se ha llevado a cabo en Omán, Francia, Brasil, Perú, Portugal, Laos y Taiwán.  “Desde su creación hasta hoy tenemos más de 2.000 atletas y ahora cada año tenemos 1.000 atletas que se unen al campeonato”, nos dice. Gracias a un amigo venezolano, Daniel, que participó en el Bikingman de 2021, por fin pudo aprobar su asignatura pendiente: los andes venezolanos. 1.000 kilómetros en cinco días con salida desde Acarigua. Para realizar el trayecto contó con la ayuda de su amigo y también de la gente local porque los andes en Venezuela tienen una particularidad. “Hay una variación muy importante de temperatura que tienes que manejar con la ropa que cargamos sobre la bicicleta y para el cuerpo es un desafío. En los Andes venezolanos pasamos de una temperatura de 40 grados por los llanos hasta los 0 grados del Collado del Cóndor”, aclara Carion. La experiencia fue tan buena que el ciclista ya está trabajando para llevar una etapa del campeonato mundial a Venezuela. “Bikingman nació en los Andes de Perú y ahora no podemos ir a Perú por el tema político, pero es un sueño volver a los Andes y tal vez sea en Venezuela”, explica Carion que volvió a Europa enamorado de la experiencia venezolana.“La comunidad de ultraciclistas en América del Sur está creciendo, hay un terreno espectacular, en Colombia, Chile, también en Brasil y ahora trabajamos con la comunidad venezolana. J’ai vraiment découvert le vélo cet été. Vous allez m’entendre en parler pas mal dans ce podcast. C’est aussi ça Gonzo, une conversation où je parle de mes expériences en lien avec l’épisode. Et c’est cette incursion dans le vélo longue distance qui m’a fait découvrir Axel. J’ai tout bêtement cherché des infos sur cette discipline qui m’était totalement inconnue. Un des premiers résultats a été la chaîne Youtube d’Axel. Il y prodiguait des conseils précieux pour aborder l’ultra à vélo. Je l’ai donc suivi, sur les réseaux, comme toujours, et j’ai découvert son histoire et ce qui en découle: l’organisation d’événements sportifs. Il avait déjà enregistré quelques podcasts que j’avais écoutés avec attention. C’était forcément axé vélo et il résumait rapidement et efficacement sa découverte de la discipline. J’avais noté son nom dans ma longue liste d’invités potentiels. Puis j’ai appris qu’il venait à Annecy, et je l’ai contacté pour enregistrer un épisode. À ma grande surprise, il n’a pas tergiversé et a dit oui directement. Et cela reflète bien la philosophie d’Axel. Dire oui, s’ouvrir aux autres, ne fermer aucune porte. Notre discussion me permettra de découvrir la personnalité étonnante d’Axel. Car Axel sait où il va, et tant mieux, car il organise des explorations à vélo. Axel a une vision, et il veut la partager. Je trouve ça bien, car sa passion il veut la transmettre, ne pas la garder pour lui. Il veut en vivre aussi et cela lui donne une énergie folle. Quand on s’est retrouvé pour enregistrer, il m’a dit «  on en a pour quoi? 40 minutes? » Ce à quoi j’ai répondu que ça dépendait de ce qu’il avait à dire. Nous avons lancé la plateforme en mode proto il y a 1 au moment du Roc d’Azur et depuis, nous avons recueilli une centaine de récits, allant des épreuves les plus folles à des aventures individuelles.
