The Hidden Power of Jazz: "Jazz music, I think it's important to say, (Jazz) has a significant number of benefits, neurologically, physiologically, even passive listening."A Tribe For Jazz is a nonprofit organization founded with a mission to preserve and advance jazz through visual storytelling, performances, education, and community engagement. Founded three years ago, with an anniversary approaching in April 2025, the organization has already left a notable mark in the jazz community.Stephanie Matthews' Journey and RoleStephanie Matthews, the executive director of A Tribe For Jazz, shares her personal journey and the roots of her passion for jazz. Growing up surrounded by jazz music, influenced by her family, and learning the trumpet out of admiration for Louis Armstrong, Stephanie's connection to jazz runs deep. She joined the organization bringing her expertise in visual storytelling, which has become a crucial part of their mission.Visual Storytelling and AchievementsOne of the standout achievements of A Tribe For Jazz is the creation of "Legacy Jon Irabagon, A Solo Tenor Odyssey" a cinematic performance film showcased at film festivals worldwide. This project exemplifies the organization's innovative approach to preserving jazz in a visual and immersive way. Additionally, the organization hosts the Combs International Jazz Series, featuring top-tier national and international jazz musicians, in partnership with CCAD and Columbus Dance Theatre.Educational and Community InitiativesStephanie emphasizes the organization's commitment to education and community engagement. They use jazz as a tool in educational contexts such as STEM and social-emotional learning. By forming dynamic partnerships, A Tribe For Jazz provides young children, especially from marginalized communities, with opportunities to think differently and develop essential skills like collaboration, adaptability, resilience, and improvisation.Jazz as a Way of ThinkingStephanie Matthews elaborates on how jazz is more than just music for her organization; it's a way of thinking and collaborating, similar to interactions in a jazz ensemble. She shares insights on how jazz fosters inclusivity, access, dialogue, and listening, making it applicable beyond the realm of art. However, she has faced skepticism from those who see jazz only as an art form and not as a broader concept with scientific connections.Neuroscience and Music's InfluenceStephanie articulates jazz's influence on the brain. She mentions how music, especially jazz, can evoke geometric patterns, mathematical equations, and colors, signifying its complexity and relation to science. Eric recommends a talk by Pat Metheny at a neuroscience conference, illustrating how music can be detected in nonmusical sounds, further emphasizing music's pervasive presence in our lives. The Challenge of Thinking Over JudgingEric discusses the notion that judgment is easy and thinking is hard, particularly in businesses and educational institutions. He encourages analytical individuals like engineers or accountants to explore and utilize different parts of their brain to enhance their existing processes. JazzLab and Creative ProcessesStephanie sheds light on the JazzLab approach, where a catalyst idea is built upon with inputs from others, allowing room for evolution and feedback. Adapting to Change and Embracing PossibilitiesEric and Stephanie discuss the inevitability of change and how jazz can be used as a metaphor to navigate it. Stephanie introduces "jazz...

Visit http://www.ivpn-network.com for more information. Originally, it was an email group focused on the topic of intravenous parenteral nutrition. IVPN is growing and includes other specialties now. Members are fondly nicknamed, “IVPNeers.” Mariam pitched the idea of adding a podcast to IVPN, and they loved it! IVPN founder, Osama Tabbara, saw something in Mariam and let her take the lead. She launched IVPN Voice Podcast in 2020. Mariam is learning a lot and having fun. IVPN Voice Podcast has a global audience with Ambassadors in other countries. Visit IVPN on Instagram for more information about Ambassadors and the countries they represent. IVPN wants to promote the profession of pharmacy among all countries and empower pharmacists to practice at the top of their licenses. Many listeners are people around Mariam’s age. They may be students, fresh grads, or pharmacists trying to find jobs and their passion for the profession of pharmacy. Mariam hopes to inspire them or push them to do what they want to do. She is a working pharmacist and a podcaster. She’s a role model to her listeners! Mariam has several co-hosts, including Ahmad El Ouweini, PharmD, Sirine Shoukair, PharmD, Leen Agha, and others. She appreciates her team and enjoys working with them. We discussed differences between the role of the pharmacist in the UAE vs the US. Private practice and entrepreneurship are more common in the US. Two US women pharmacists who help other pharmacists launch businesses are Dr. Blair Thielemier and Dr. Asha Pai Bohannon. Blair’s Pharmapreneur Academy helps pharmacists leverage their skills through consulting services. Dr. Asha works with her husband Eric to help pharmacists launch their own businesses. IVPN Founder Osama Tabbara and current APhA President Scott Knoer know one another from Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic has a presence in the UAE, specifically in Abu Dhabi. According to Mariam, Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi (CCAD) has set the bar high for medicine. She did her internship at CCAD and credits them with helping her find her passion for pharmacy during her internship. Currently, Mariam works full-time as a pharmacist in a hospital in the UAE. Her focus is insurance and pre-authorization issues, but she also dispenses meds, counsels patients on therapy, and does first fill reviews. She records 1-2 podcasts per month. Mariam may be the only woman pharmacist podcaster in UAE as of this recording (April 10, 2021). Way to go Mariam!! Check out IVPN Voice Podcast, and connect with Mariam on LinkedIn. Dr. Melanie Corn, President of the Columbus College of Art & Design, shares the story of breaking the mold in your family, your community, your society, and yourself. We explore how our childhood experiences shape us — the good and the bad — and what schools can do to better support children today, especially when it comes to mental health. What Brett asks: [9:10] It sounds like you had an almost idealistic childhood. Is that fair? [17:10] Did the end-of-the-world nuclear war messaging seep in and shape you as a child? [18:30] Can you tell us about what it was “supposed to be like” growing up as a girl and the societal limitations you experienced? How did that play out for you? [23:20] Can you connect the dots between the positive and negative messaging you get from both your family and society growing up? How does that play out as you move through high school and college? [27:30] How did the creative part of you start to emerge and take shape? [38:00] It may not sound like that big a deal today, but it sounds like you’re breaking a mold in your community, in your family, in your society, and in yourself — and it sounds like the girl dragging the keg is the thing that really gets you to break that mold! [43:00] Tell us about why you came back to the Midwest and what you’re creating now. What is your vision for CCAD and how are you using all of this life experience to create it? [51:25] Are we all born creative? And how are you honoring this new way of being creative? [1:01:20] What are you doing to tackle the mental health aspect of the college experience? Kenny Sipes started the Roosevelt Coffeehouse in 2013 to make a social impact. He knew from the start that he wanted to build the coffee shop without any loans so that they would be able to make the biggest impact. Before starting the Roosevelt Coffeehouse, Kenny worked as a pastor for youth services. He imagined it must be a bit creepy for youths to meet in a pastors office, so he often met kids in coffee shops, where the atmosphere was more conducive. And he was always reflecting on the long-term view - what effect could he have now that would impact these kids 10 years down the road. How did compassion develop through his work? Through his work, Kenny organized missions for the youths he helped -- first in the US, and then abroad, to Africa and south-east Asia. On one trip to St Louis, after spending the day helping paint a house, they discovered a nearby house had caught fire -- a family with very little now had nothing and was out on the streets. Instead of taking their leave to enjoy their free day, the kids unanimously put in their travel money and went to Walmart to buy essential supplies for the family to help them rebuild. That’s the moment that Kenny realized these kids understood their privilege and compassion. As they continued their work abroad, he developed insight into cultural and issues people face around the world. In Africa, he realized the significance of clean water - something we take for granted in the US, (unless more examples like Flint start rising up!) Without latrines, or even basic understanding of how to keep clean, or access to clean running water -- disease spreads so easily -- even though we know how to prevent this with the proper infrastructure. So how did this lead to a coffeehouse? When Kenny left the church, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. But a trip to dream about the possibilities took him to Nashville, where he spent time hopping from one coffeehouse to the next. This led him to The Well, a coffeehouse with a mission to make a social impact. The idea was simple: build a coffeehouse where the profits can support causes where they could make a difference: Water, hunger, and human trafficking. What's it like at the Roosevelt? What really strikes me about Roosevelt is that it has a strong community feel. They make everyone feel welcome. They’re just a block away from CCAD, the Columbus College of Art & Design, so it attracts designers. With their social mission, they bring in lots of social entrepreneurs... as well as people trying to get back on their feet. There is an uplifting energy in the coffeehouse that you can feel when you walk in the door. Kenny sets the example for how to foster this community, but he told me, “Adam, it is critical that you don’t get carried away by your social missions, to the point that you neglect the quality of the product or service you are delivering”. With social entrepreneurship, I keep hearing this time and again. As with any business, develop a quality product, and produce a solid business that stands on it own. Only with a strong business can you tie in a strong a mission to serve. But a mission without a strong business behind it won’t be able to make its potential impact in the long term. What about trafficking? Learning about trafficking has been an eye-opening experience for me. I never expected it to exist in my own backyard, or for it to be such a prevalent issue. Something Kenny said struck out -- that we really need to change the story around prostitution -- the truth is that women are usually victims of the John’s who are pimping them out. It’s a complex issue, sometimes involving kidnapping, sometimes drugs and co-dependency. But we need to make it easier to talk about so that we can develop the awareness to address some of the issues that fuel it. Kenny shared so much in the podcast - here are some resources that we touched on: The Roosevelt Coffeehouse and their mission
