LAO projects the state budget deficit has grown to $73 billion. Plus, the Placer County Registrar of Voters joins us ahead of the primary. Finally, the Matthew Shepard inspired-play “The Laramie Project.” State Budget Shortfall Grows If you go by the latest projections from the Legislative Analyst Office, California's budget deficit is getting worse. The LAO, which provides nonpartisan fiscal advice to California lawmakers, revised its forecast from a $58 billion gap to a now $73 billion gap. The numbers follow Gov. Newsom's different budget analysis from the Dept. of Finance - which last month projected a lesser shortfall of $38 billion. No matter who is right, lawmakers and the Governor are going to need to make some serious decisions ahead of the May Revise. Joining us to discuss are H.D. Palmer, Deputy Director for External Affairs with the Department of Finance, and CapRadio State Politics Reporter Nicole Nixon. Placer County Registrar of Voters With the primary election just two weeks away, voters in Placer County have more opportunities to cast their ballot, thanks to the recent adoption of the state's Voter's Choice Act. Placer County Registrar of Voters Ryan Ronco explains what some of the major changes are, and how his office is preparing to make sure elections are both well-staffed and safe. Matthew Shepard Inspired-Play ‘The Laramie Project' In 1998 the body of Matthew Shepard was found severely beaten and tied to a fence post in the Wyoming town of Laramie. The 21-year-old college student's murder became one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in American history and spawned a wave of activism that continues today. Activism that also includes art. The Laramie Project is a play written by Moisés Kaufman and chronicles the reaction to Shepard's murder by the rural American community. The play draws on hundreds of interviews with Laramie residents and news reports. The latest production is directed by Scott Ebersold which will be presented by the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance from Feb. 22 to March 2. Warning: This play includes strong language and mature content that some may find upsetting.

Agriculture is BIG business in California; More than half the fruits, nuts and vegetables sold in the US come from the Golden State. This summer, the legislature passed AB616, the Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act, a bill to expand options for organizing agricultural workers. Modeled on the 2016 Voter's Choice Act, the bill sailed through the legislature, despite being labeled a "job killer" by agribusiness interests. To the surprise of many - including bill sponsors the United Farm Workers - Gov. Newsom vetoed the bill on September 22. Undaunted, the UFW immediately rerouted an in-progress march on Sacramento to Napa's French Laundry, a dig at the Governor they had supported against Recall just the week before. The defeat is the second major blow to the UFW this year: In June, the Supreme Court reversed decades of precedent in a ruling in Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid, finding that union organizers have no right of access to the premises of an agricultural employer for the purpose of meeting and talking with employees and soliciting their support. We are joined this episode by Giev Kashkooli, the political and legislative director for the UFW. Kashkooli spoke with John Howard and Tim Foster about these setbacks, and about the UFW's plans for the future. And, as always, we tell you who had the Worst Week in California Pollitics. Nico Boesten, musician, producer, coach, father and so much more, describes the tender lessons and influences provided by the brilliant light and wounded darkness contained in the very human depths of his own father. He shares a pivotal moment of a line crossed, an apology sincerely tendered, and a determination to do better – touching on generational healing. Then there was a trip to Maui and the Divine delivery of a six-string in, of all places, an airport terminal. o whom is the Federal Reserve accountable? Does the Fed's insistence on its "independence" mean it thinks the answer is: To no one? Who should oversee the results, successful or unsuccessful, of the Fed's actions? One answer was given by a former president of the New York Fed years ago: "The Congress which set us up has the authority and should review our actions at any time they want to, and in any way they want to." The CHOICE Act, recently passed by the House Financial Services Committee would in its Title X., "Fed Oversight Reform," create greater Fed accountability to the Congress. This Federalist Society Teleforum explored the bill's provisions and the issues involved. -- Featuring: Alex Pollock, Senior Fellow, R Street Institute and Norbert Michel, Senior Research Fellow, Financial Regulations and Monetary Policy, The Heritage Foundation.

Just this last week, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on the Community Choice Act. It was great to see the Senate Finance Committee leaders, both Democrat and Republican speak in support of the Community Choice Act. This legislation is not without its opposition. It has been 10 years since MiCASSA (now the Community Choice Act) was first introduced seeking the right of individuals with disabilities to live in their communities. In addition to looking at support for legislation it is just as important to be aware of what is preventing a bill from passage.
