This week, your friends Count Vardulon and DM watch two fake documentaries, both of which are really good. Noroi: The Curse does a great job making the viewer believe in its world, and Horror in the High Desert is a master class in pacing. Tune in for an embarrassing correction, and stay for a twist on horror trivia.
J-Horror was hugely popular here in the States in the early 2000s, and arguably one of the best of that time was also arguably one of the best found footage movies we've seen - 2005's NOROI: THE CURSE. This is a great example of what works best in found footage, from the mysteries intertwining as the story progresses, the ramping-up of creepy occurrences, to the legitimate reasons for the cameras to be rolling. It's a 10/10 and surprisingly scary even after all these years! Listen to us wax poetic about fetus demons this week on Horror Movie Night! Learn more about your ad choices. This week we talked about one of the unsung pillars of the Found Footage genre, Noroi: The Curse! A favorite of some hosts, a neutral experience for others, we hope you enjoy! No official critic's review this week. It used to be very difficult to watch this film in America and as such there's not a lot of coverage. On this episode, Aaron and Derek tackle 2005's Japanese found footage horror movie "Noroi: The Curse" directed and co-written by Kōji Shiraishi. They discuss how the pseudo-documentary presentation compliments found footage, the foreboding dread and methodical pacing, and Japanese culture and folklore inspiring the curse's lore within the movie. They also talk about the limited distribution outside of Japan, the reasoning for cameras being present in every scene making sense, and many other aspects of the film. Aaron and Derek want the truth. No matter how terrifying, they want the truth. Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve are proud to welcome back special guest and friend of the show,Ricky Ticky Randew from the Straight Chilling podcast, a man of profound insights and fellow found footage aficionado, to discuss the dread soaked manifestation of generational guilt and supernatural foreboding, Lake Mungo from 2008. Join us as we discuss sleepwalking and night terrors, the deeply unsettling creep factor the film espouses via themes of depression, dread, and the inevitability of death and meander through some of our other greatest hits in the found footage subgenre such as the likes of Blair Witch, Noroi: The Curse and Creep - 1 and 2. The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, soak in the cold and unforgiving waters of existential dread whilst traversing an outback setting with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at. No rules, just right. Let's wax this down under porpoise. https://linktr.ee/waxtheporpoise #lakemungo #dread #oz #downunder #haunting #waxit Huge thanks to the one and only Randeezy for joining us to discuss this one, the pleasure was all ours.

Vi pratar också om: Johan Theorin, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Jurtjyrkogården, Whitley Strieber, Närkontakt, Noroi: The Curse, Nocturnal Animals, Cannibal Ferox, Mortal Kombat 2, Silencer, Death. Pierce Me, Andreas Roman, Cannibal Holocaust, Human Centipede 2, Hostel-sviten, A Serbian Film, Mats Strandberg, The Babadook, Pestens tid, Magnus Blomdahl, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Gates of Hell-trilogin, Phenomena, Suspiria, Herman Geijer, Walking Dead, Last of Us, World War Z, Hanteringen av odöda, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Fredagen den 13e, Crispin Glover, 28 dagar senare, Atterados, Gabrielle de Bourg, Host, Rörelsen, The Vigil, Saint Maud, Pandemic, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Sara Bergmark Elfgren, Stuart Gordon, H.P. Lovecraft, Stanley Kubrick, The Great God Pan, Arthur Machen, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, The Shing, Stephen King, J.S. Stef (@witchxpudding) & L (@nocturnical) discuss the 2005 Japanese documentary-style found footage horror Noroi the Curse. This is a favorite of L's & since she pretty much just gushed about the pacing, character work, & lore consistency of the movie, we don't have a ton of weird, jokey things to put in this description. We do call the entity Mr. Tuba though out of respect for Stef's demon rules. This episode was edited by L (video) & Stef (audio). Most episodes are now available on YouTube, youtube.com/@GITMPodcast. Kicking off our found footage month, we're starting with a movie neither of us had seen: Noroi: The Curse. Unfortunately, we weren't digging this one. We get into some of the really great ideas including old rituals and psychic children, but all in all it we felt like this was a movie that squandered any initial tension and atmosphere it had built up. Tangents include: Lipstick colors and the differences between porches, patios, and decks. If you have seen Noroi: The Curse we would love to know what you thought about it! Halloween is in full swing here on I Know That Face and this week, we are doing something a little different. Instead of talking about the career of a character actor, we're talking about an entire genre, well sub-genre, of horror movies. Beginning with The Blair Witch Project, Stephen and Andrew dive into found footage. Listen in for debates about more popular fare like Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity to unanimous agreement on Asian horrors like Noroi: The Curse, The Medium and Incantation.
