The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (06/11/2024): 3:05pm- A jury in Wilmington, Delaware has found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to lying on a background-check he submitted when acquiring a firearm in October of 2018. According to reports, the president's son could face up to 25-years in prison and a fine up to $750,000. Could President Joe Biden pardon his son—and would that potentially impact his status as the Democrat Party's 2024 presidential nominee? 3:30pm- In a new article for Politico, Ben Schreckinger documents the numerous connections between Joe Biden aides and the Biden family's business. He writes: “For years, Joe Biden shared a bookkeeper with his son, Hunter. He also shared a personal lawyer with his brother, Jim. And when Jim Biden wanted to know more about one of Hunter Biden's associates, he hired the former head of Joe Biden's Secret Service detail to investigate. Since 2019, Joe Biden has repeatedly distanced himself from his family's business dealings, saying that he has never so much as discussed them with his relatives or with anyone else. But House impeachment inquiry interviews, public records and emails reviewed by POLITICO show that members of his inner circle were regularly enmeshed in those dealings: Many of the president's closest staffers and advisers have doubled as his relatives' business associates, both during and after their stints working for the man at the center of the Biden family orbit.” You can read the full article here: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/06/08/joe-biden-aides-family-business-dealings-00161476 3:40pm- In reaction to President Joe Biden's abysmal approval ratings, statistician Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight suggested that it might be in the Democrat Party's best interest to replace Biden as their 2024 presidential candidate. According to RealClearPolitics polling averages, Biden now trails Donald Trump in all seven key swing states and is only up 2-points in Democrat strongholds like Minnesota and Virginia. 4:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap the European Parliament elections which saw right-leaning parties perform particularly well. The results led to French President Emmanuel Macron calling for a snap legislative election. Plus, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stated that there should be a universal ban on fossil fuel advertisements in order to protect “green energy” from criticism. Dr. Coates is the author of: “David's Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art.” You can find her book here: https://www.amazon.com/Davids-Sling-History-Democracy-Works/dp/1594037213. 4:30pm- Caroline Sunshine—Deputy Director of Communications for the 2024 Trump Campaign—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a jury in Wilmington, Delaware finding Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to the purchase of a firearm in October of 2018. Plus, Sunshine reacts to polling previewing the 2024 presidential election, as well as President Biden's backwards economic policies. She jokes: “Joe Biden is a few French fries short of a Happy Meal.” 4:50pm- Rich reveals that he never got to select his own show's theme tune. Matt nearly gets fired when he suggests it should be changed to “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham! He played the song yesterday and was endlessly yelled at by both Rich and the audience… 5:05pm- A jury in Wilmington, Delaware has found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to lying on a background-check he submitted when acquiring a firearm in October of 2018. According to reports, the president's son could face up to 25-years in prison and a fine up to $750,000. Could President Joe Biden pardon his son—and would that potentially impact his status as the Democrat Party's 2024 presidential nominee? 5:10pm- Prior to the 2020 presidential election, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, along with other high-ranking members of the intelligence community, signed a letter dismissing The New York Post's Hunter Biden laptop story as Russian disinformation. The laptop has since been confirmed as being authentic—but Clapper recently stated he does not regret his decision. 5:15pm- While appearing on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan, CBS News poll director Anthony Salvanto revealed that 62% of registered voters support the deportation of migrants living in the United States unlawfully. 5:20pm- Listeners react: Could the Democrat Party actually consider replacing Joe Biden at the top of their 2024 ticket? 5:40pm- According to report from Adam Reiss and Dareh Gregorian of NBC News: “The New Jersey attorney general's office is investigating the eligibility of the liquor licenses of three Trump-owned golf courses in the state following former President Donald Trump's conviction on felony charges in New York, officials confirmed Tuesday. The three properties under review by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin and the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which is a part of the AG's office, include Bedminster, Pine Hill and Colts Neck.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/new-jersey-attorney-general-reviewing-trump-golf-liquor-licenses-rcna156550 5:50pm- Speaking at a gun violence prevention conference in Washington, D.C., President Joe Biden insisted that Americans don't need guns to protect themselves from the government—because the government could simply use an F-15 fighter jet to target people. Well, that makes me feel safe… 6:05pm- Prior to his interview with a House of Representatives Subcommittee investigating the government's response to COVID-19, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo defended his actions during the pandemic—specifically his decision to send sick patients back to nursing homes. 6:15pm- During a campaign rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, former President Donald Trump posed a hilarious hypothetical question to his audience: Would you rather be electrocuted or eaten by a shark? 6:20pm- In newly released footage from January 6th, 2021, then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) can be heard saying: “I take responsibility for not having them just prepare for more,” referring to the National Guard. The video was shot by Pelosi's daughter Alexandra and provided to Congressional investigators via HBO. 6:25pm- While appearing on Fox News with Jesse Waters, billionaire David Sacks noted that Silicon Valley is suddenly backing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Although the California-based technology sector has historically been progressive in political ideology, Sacks says he believes people are starting to realize that Trump's policies benefit them. 6:30pm- A jury in Wilmington, Delaware has found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to lying on a background-check he submitted when acquiring a firearm in October of 2018. According to reports, the president's son could face up to 25-years in prison and a fine up to $750,000. Following the trial, Juror #10 spoke with CNN—explaining that he never considered that Hunter was the son of the president of the United States. 6:40pm- When asked about the Hunter Biden trial during an interview with Dana Bash on CNN, Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) claimed that her internet connection dropped and could not continue the conversation…perfect timing! 6:50pm- A progressive journalist secretly recorded a conversation she had with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. At one point Justice Alito agrees that the country is polarized and that it should return to a place of godliness. How is anything he said controversial? The left is, of course, losing its mind.

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
On Friday, December 16, 1960, a United Airlines Douglas DC-8, bound for Idlewild Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport) in New York City, collided in midair with a TWA Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation descending into the city's LaGuardia Airport. The Constellation crashed on Miller Field in Staten Island and the DC-8 into Park Slope, Brooklyn, killing all 128 people on the two aircraft and six people on the ground. It was the deadliest aviation disaster in the world at the time. The death toll would not be surpassed until a Lockheed C-130B Hercules was shot down in May 1968, killing 155 people. In terms of commercial aviation, the death toll would not be surpassed until the March 1969 crash of Viasa Flight 742, which crashed on takeoff and killed all 84 people on board the aircraft, as well as 71 people on the ground. The accident became known as the Park Slope plane crash or the Miller Field crash, after the crash sites of each plane respectively. The accident was also the first hull loss and first fatal accident involving a Douglas DC-8. United Airlines Flight 826, Mainliner Will Rogers, registration N8013U, was a DC-8-11 carrying 84 people from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to Idlewild Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport) in Queens. The crew was Captain Robert Sawyer (age 46), First Officer Robert Fiebing (40), Flight Engineer Richard Pruitt (30), and four stewardesses.[1] Trans World Airlines Flight 266, Star of Sicily, registration N6907C, was a Super Constellation carrying 44 people from Dayton and Columbus, Ohio, to LaGuardia Airport in Queens. The crew was Captain David Wollam (age 39), First Officer Dean Bowen (32), Flight Engineer LeRoy Rosenthal (30), and two stewardesses. Star of Sicily's sister ship N6902C, Star of the Seine, was destroyed in another mid-air collision with a United Airlines flight in 1956. At 10:21 A.M. Eastern Time, United 826 advised ARINC radio — which relayed the message to UAL maintenance — that one of its VOR receivers had stopped working. ATC, however, was not told that the aircraft had only one receiver, which made it more difficult for the pilots of flight 826 to identify the Preston intersection, beyond which it had not received clearance. At 10:25 A.M. Eastern Time, air traffic control issued a revised clearance for the flight to shorten its route to the Preston holding point (near Laurence Harbor, New Jersey) by 12 miles (19 km). That clearance included holding instructions (a standard race-track holding pattern) for UAL Flight 826 when it arrived at the Preston intersection. Flight 826 was expected to reduce its speed before reaching Preston, to a standard holding speed of 210 knots or less. However, the aircraft was estimated to be doing 301 knots when it collided with the TWA plane, several miles beyond that Preston clearance limit. During the investigation, United claimed the Colts Neck VOR was unreliable (pilots testified on both sides of the issue). ("Preston" was the point where airway V123 — the 050-radial off the Robbinsville VOR — crossed the Solberg 120-degree radial and the Colts Neck 346-degree radial.) However, the CAB final report found no problem with the Colts Neck VOR. The prevailing conditions were light rain and fog (which had been preceded by snowfall). According to the DC-8's FDR, the aircraft was 12 miles (19 km) off course and for 81 seconds, had descended at 3,600 feet per minute (18 m/s) while slowing from more than 400 knots to 301 knots at the time of the collision. One of the starboard engines on the DC-8 hit the Constellation just ahead of its wings, tearing apart that portion of the fuselage. The Constellation entered a dive, with debris continuing to fall as it disintegrated during its spiral to the ground. The initial impact tore the engine from its pylon on the DC-8. Having lost one engine and a large part of the right-wing, the DC-8 remained airborne for another minute and a half. The DC-8 crashed into the Park Slope section of Brooklyn at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Sterling Place (40°40′38″N 73°58′25″W), scattering wreckage and setting fire to ten brownstone apartment buildings, the Pillar of Fire Church, the McCaddin Funeral Home, a Chinese laundry, and a delicatessen. Six people on the ground were killed. The crash left the remains of the DC-8 pointed southeast towards a large open field at Prospect Park, blocks from its crash site. A student at the school who lived in one of the destroyed apartment buildings said his family survived because they happened to be in the only room of their apartment not destroyed. The crash left a trench covering most of the length of the middle of Sterling Place. Occupants of the school thought a bomb had gone off or that the building's boiler had exploded. The TWA plane crashed onto the northwest corner of Miller Field, at 40.57°N 74.103°W, with some sections of the aircraft landing in New York Harbor. At least one passenger fell into a tree before the wreckage hit the ground. There was no radio contact with traffic controllers from either plane after the collision, although LaGuardia had begun tracking an incoming, fast-moving, unidentified plane from Preston toward the LaGuardia "Flatbush" outer marker. The likely cause of the accident was identified in a report by the US Civil Aeronautics Board. United Flight 826 proceeded beyond its clearance limit and the confines of the airspace allocated to the flight by Air Traffic Control. A contributing factor was the high rate of speed of the United DC-8 as it approached the Preston intersection, coupled with the change of clearance which reduced the en-route distance along Victor 123 by approximately 11 miles. The only person to initially survive the crash was an 11-year-old boy from Wilmette, Illinois. He was traveling on Flight 826 unaccompanied as part of his family's plans to spend Christmas in Yonkers with relatives. He was thrown from the plane into a snowbank where his burning clothing was extinguished. Although alive and conscious, he was badly burned and had inhaled burning fuel. He died of pneumonia the next day. In 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the accident, a memorial to the 134 victims of the two crashes was unveiled in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn. The cemetery is the site of the common grave in which were placed the human remains that could not be identified. The events of the collision are documented in the 5th season, episode 1, of The Weather Channel documentary Why Planes Crash. The episode is titled "Collision Course" and was first aired in April 2013. https://youtu.be/ilFKPhgMGqM As a result of this accident, the following changes were instituted: Pilots must report malfunctions of navigation or communication equipment to ATC. All turbine-powered aircraft must be equipped with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME). Jet aircraft must slow to holding speed at least 3 minutes before reaching the holding fix. Aircraft are prohibited from exceeding 250 knots when within 30 nautical miles of a destination airport and below 10,000 feet MSL.

Hydration 101 Everyone has probably heard that a human being can live for more than 3 weeks without food but only 3-4 days without water. Even with this knowledge, water is the most common nutritional deficiency in the American population. It may surprise you to know that water is a nutrient but it is actually the most important nutrient in our body and makes up 55-60% of our body mass. Some of water’s many roles include: Improving oxygen delivery Transport of nutrients Cushions bones and joints Absorbs shocks to joints and organs Enables cellular hydration Regulates body temperature Removes wastes Flushes toxins Prevents tissues from sticking Maintains normal electrical properties of cells (electrolytes) Empowers the body’s natural healing process Moistens oxygen The ideal amount of water is bio-individual but the general recommendation is to drink half of your weight in ounces of water. For example, a 140-pound individual would aim for about 70 ounces of water per day. Those who are more active may need more water and very sedentary individuals less. If you consume a large amount of diuretic beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, soft drinks, and alcohol, you will need to drink more water As a functional nutritionist in Colts Neck, NJ, when someone tells me that they are having issues with constipation, headaches, joint problems or fatigue, the first questions I ask is how much water they are drinking. We don’t normally make the association of being dehydrated to any physical issues but many symptoms we have on a daily basis can be related to just that. What are some signs of dehydration? Some early signs of dehydration are: Fatigue Anxiety Irritability Depression Cravings Cramps Headache Mature signs of dehydration are: Heartburn Joint pain Back pain Migraines Fibromyalgia Constipation Colitis About 8% of water is produced when the body processes (metabolizes) certain nutrients. The body loses water primarily by excreting it in urine from the kidneys. The remaining 92% must be ingested through the foods we eat and the beverages we drink. Also, water cannot be stored in the body - we are not camels! In order to absorb water, we need to have appropriate electrolytes, such as: potassium sodium calcium bicarbonate magnesium chloride phosphate Electrolytes are chemicals that form ions in body fluids. They help make sure specific bodily functions run smoothly. The electrical energy that is carried by these ions is necessary for many functions, including muscle contractions and transmission of nerve impulses. For example, muscle cramping can be an indication of low electrolytes. Sports drinks that claim to replace electrolytes are not the best choice for hydration because most of them contain an abundance of sugar or artificial sweeteners plus artificial colors and flavors. Your best bet is filtered, spring water or coconut water with a pinch of unrefined sea salt or Himalayan pink sea salt. It is best to drink filtered or spring water. If you drink bottled water make sure the bottle is BPA free. Distilled Water, which is free of dissolved minerals and other particles has the ability to absorb toxic substances but pulls minerals from the body and can be dehydrating. It can be used for short term detoxifying of heavy metals if indicated but should not be consumed as drinking water. How much water loss causes dehydration? If the body’s water content drops by as little as 2%, it will cause fatigue. A drop of 10% will cause significant digestive, cardiovascular, immune and musculoskeletal problems. Losses of greater than 10% can cause death. There is something else to keep in mind regarding hydration and age. There has been research that seems to indicate that as we age there is a change in the way our body regulates thirst. Due to this, elderly people may need to drink regularly even when they do not feel thirsty. So, other than feeling thirsty, how do you know if you are dehydrated? A good indicator of proper hydration is the color of urine. Use the following as a general indicator of hydration: Clear urine (no color at all) - you may be drinking too much water Pale yellow - this color indicates adequate hydration Bright yellow - if you are taking vitamin B2 (riboflavin) which is in most multi-vitamins your urine will be a fluorescent yellow Dark amber - this is a sign of dehydration If your urine is scant or if you haven't urinated in several hours, that too is an indication that you're not drinking enough. Based on the results from a few different studies, a healthy person urinates on average about seven or eight times a day What if you don’t like the taste of water or the lack of taste? There are a few ways to make drinking water or other hydrating drinks more palatable. Try adding a squeeze of lemon juice, lime juice or grapefruit juice to your water and add a pinch of sea salt. Or buy an infuser water bottle that has a separate compartment at the bottom that crushes your choice of fruits and infuses the water. Unsweetened herbal teas, iced or hot, are also a good choice for hydration with more flavor. If you're a fan of coconut water, this can be a hydrating drink as long as it is not sweetened. There are natural sugars in coconut water but they do not have a big impact on blood sugar and it is a good source of electrolytes. If you have any questions at all about hydration or other health concerns, please contact me at Functionised, Colts Neck, New Jersey. There are many well known and accepted small things each of us can do everyday to help our overall health in significant ways, and for the most part, the basic understanding of each is well understood. We all know that moderate exercise, keeping hydrated, and eating a variety of fresh unprocessed food is simply smart decisions for our long term well being. Getting into the habit of practicing each regularly is often a major barrier for most of us. This all holds true for stretching as well. We all know its something that we should do, but that alone hasn’t helped the majority of the population achieve accountability to do it. Why should we stretch, and what are the benefits? What is the best way to stretch? How long should we stretch for? Are there methods and times that we should avoid it? Let’s first get to the why of stretching. Aside from the obvious factor of it helping us become more flexible by increasing our range of motion, it also helps prevent injury for both the avid exerciser and sedentary individual alike. When a muscle gets tight or knotted, it becomes shorter. A shortened muscle doesn’t have the same amount of power, strength, and endurance as a fully elastic and pliable muscle. So keeping with a strict stretch regiment will help full athletic performance. Even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete, or aren’t currently competing, you want to be able to activate a muscle through its entire ROM. If you look at the exercise of a squat, the goal is to come down to where the knees and hips are at least 90 degrees and then blast upward using predominately your quadriceps. If you don’t use the full ROM, the muscle fibers that are activated in the lower position will never get the strength increase and activation, which will lead to muscle imbalances and may cause it’s own slew of issues and injuries. One of the biggest questions which is frequently argued in the medical and performance cultures is how long should we be stretching each muscle or muscle group? This applies mostly to static ischemic stretches which are held for “x” amount of time, and is the gold standard so to speak for stretching. There are multiple types of stretches, which a few will be discussed shortly. Firstly, one needs to make sure that they are physically prepared to stretch. Though this may sound odd, warming up to some degree for any style of stretch is quite important to allow the muscles to engorge with blood and become more pliable. Think about our muscles in this context as taffy. Taffy candy is very hard and brittle while cold, but warm it up slightly and it can stretch and flex nearly ten fold. Our muscles work in a similar fashion. So whether it be a hot shower, a light jog, some low level jump rope, a dynamic warm-up, or some other means of mild aerobic activity, having blood flow moving into the area will help prevent strains and sprains from the stretch. Static held stretches is what we are most accustomed to, such as the hamstring stretch where we are standing and flex forward as if reaching to touch the floor. As with any stretch the goal is to keep it held at a minor discomfort but without causing any pain. There’s no debate on the fact that this works in terms of helping general flexibility, but the questions arise for when it should be performed and for how long. Growing up participating in sports like many of us, I was accustomed to doing a few static stretches for 10 to 30 seconds prior to engaging in a sport’s practice or competition. Recent literature suggests that this may not be best, and could in turn actually increase the risk of injury. When we hold a stretch, even for a few seconds, we aren’t just stretching the muscle, but also everything that is surrounding it as well such as the blood supply in arteries and veins. During a stretch, our muscle begins to have a limited blood supply and “cools” off by becoming ischemic (lacking of oxygen). The last thing we want is to perform a good stretch, and then get up right away to activate muscles that hasn’t had a blood/oxygen/nutrient supply which will predispose yourself to a sprain or strain. Back to the taffy analogy from earlier, we don’t want to deprive the muscle of oxygen and blood flow prior to doing any sort of activity, which is going to require soft and maneuverable muscle tissue such as exercise. So in this case, it may be recommended to stretch at a time of rest, meaning not just prior to doing physical activity, or at the very least, do another dynamic warm-up post stretch. Now comes the matter of time, which like most things, is partially dictated on what the exact goal is of the stretch. If one is just looking for a quick short-term increase in flexibility, 10 to 30 seconds is usually enough to help. If you are looking for a more permanent change to the muscle fibers for prolonged flexibility, 2 to 5 minutes appears to be more of the answer and is where most of the literature recommends. There has been a study done where a static stretch was performed for 30 minutes and it caused a change in the cellular DNA of the muscle fiber. This was re-tested here at Functionised, and we had a 4 to 6inch increase in flexibility that lasted over 1 month with no farther stretching. This is not recommended for stretch beginners, and not without medical supervision. Another well-known style of stretching, though controversial one due to it’s known habits of causing injury, is known as ballistic stretching. This method is not recommended for most, and is more often seen with elite athletes but still requires caution if being performed. . Ballistic stretching includes a fast, jerking motion, which causes the stretch to go beyond its normal ROM. In terms of explanation, if you take the standing hamstring stretch where we lightly and slowly press towards the floor to induce a minor stretch in a static hold, the ballistic method would be to start standing upright, and quickly bend over and forcing your hands to go towards the floor when your body is adapted and fully capable of doing so. Though this way of stretching will help increase flexibility, the ratio at which it can cause injury, even after properly warming up, makes it difficult for most to recommend. A good alternative to ballistic stretching is PNF, or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation. This technique is frequently performed by somebody else, such as a chiropractor, physical therapist, athletic trainer, etc. The most common way of doing this is by following a sequence of stretch-contract-stretch to help inhibit the stretch reflex and make a significant flexibility change rather rapidly. This is done with somebody beginning a stretch for you; such as raising one of your legs upward while the person being stretched is laying on their back to target the hamstrings. Once the stretch is beginning, the patient will perform a strong contraction of the muscle in the opposite direction of the stretch; in this example it would be pushing the leg downward. After 10 seconds, the patient will fully relax as the practitioner impulses the leg into a deeper stretch than first began. Do you feel like your whole body is tight, sore, and need to learn more about stretching? Have you been trying to stretch but haven’t seen the results you desire? If so, schedule an appointment with Functionised today for your musculoskeletal examination to help put you back on track for a happier, healthier, and more flexible you. One of the most frequently asked questions I hear from clients, family and friends is, “What should I eat?”, whether it is for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks. We are surrounded by so many food choices, yet so many of us are confused about what to eat whether it is to be healthier, lose weight or feel better. This question came up the other day when I received a phone call from my 21-year-old son. He is a college student living on his own with a busy school and work schedule. He called me to say that lately, he has been feeling very hungry, tired and irritable between meals so he asked me what he should be eating to avoid this. The first question I ask anyone who is having this same issue is, “How much water are you drinking?” Since thirst is very often mistaken for hunger, this is the first question you need to ask yourself when you are feeling hungry. Try drinking more water, see if you feel better and, if not, then have a snack. The next question I ask is, “What current food choices are you making when you are feeling hungry and irritable?” The snack you decide to have makes a big impact on how you will feel until you eat again. My son was grabbing Cliff bars on the go or an apple but this was not helping him feel better for very long. The reason these snacks will not satiate you for long is that Cliff bars have a high amount of sugar and other high glycemic ingredients, and an apple, while it is a fruit and has other nutrients, is still packing a higher glycemic punch when eaten alone on an empty stomach. You will have an initial feeling of satiation from the spike in your blood sugar from the refined sugar and carbs but when your blood sugar drops too low within half an hour of eating a high glycemic food, you will again crave something to eat to provide more energy and usually what you choose will be a high glycemic food because it provides a quick burst of energy. So you are on this roller coaster ride of energy highs and lows from spikes and drops of your insulin. Snacking on higher protein foods with a healthful fat will slow down the absorption of food and provide a longer burning source of energy. Think of fat as a log on the fire and carbohydrates as kindling. You will avoid blood sugar spikes and drops which take a toll on your endocrine system and exhaust your pancreas, liver and adrenal glands which all have a role in blood sugar regulation. I gave my son examples of higher protein snacks with some good fats. For example, raw nuts, almond butter with the apple or on a slice of sprouted bread, organic beef/chicken/turkey jerky or a roasted chicken leg. Of course, these snacks need to be packed with you for the day and this is where prep comes in. I wish I had a quick fix answer but the only way you can eat healthfully is by planning ahead. Grabbing foods on the run does not usually equal a nutrient dense choice of food. Some more examples of food that can be made or purchased for your weekly meals are: Whole organic rotisserie chicken - organic costs more (about $10) but you are going to save money and eat more healthfully because you will get a few meals out of one chicken. Chicken salad (with mayo such as Primal Kitchen, Sir Kensingtons), a green salad with apples, walnuts, chicken and homemade dressing (or Primal Kitchen dressings made with Avocado Oil - there are many great flavors!) Sweet Potatoes - every Sunday I bake 10 sweet potato halves for the week. Just slice them lengthwise rub with some avocado oil, place face down on a parchment lined pan, bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, depending on the thickness of potatoes. That’s it! Super easy and quick and you have sweet potatoes for the week. Roasted Spaghetti Squash - this is another very versatile vegetable which can be eaten alone or with turkey chili on top for example. A decent size spaghetti squash can make enough for 3-4 days. Just split it lengthwise, scoop out seeds, brush some avocado oil and unrefined sea salt and roast face down in a 400-degree oven for about 40-60 minutes depending on the size. When done and cooled, scrape out the “spaghetti”. Roasted Vegetables - This can be a combination of your favorite vegetables. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and place assortment of vegetables with olive oil, unrefined sea salt and your favorite dried herbs on a roasting pan for about 20-30 minutes. (my favorites are cauliflower, asparagus, brussell sprouts, broccoli). Just make sure the vegetables are relatively similar in size so they cook evenly. Again, very easy and you have vegetables for the week. Homemade Trail Mix - store-bought trail mixes are filled with candy, refined, inflammatory vegetable oils such as canola, soybean, and cottonseed oils and usually a large number of dried fruits which are high in sugar naturally. A better choice would be making your own trail mix with an assortment of raw nuts, freeze-dried low glycemic blueberries or strawberries (can be found at Trader Joe’s), unsweetened toasted coconut and unsweetened cacao nibs. Yes, this will taste very different but when you adjust your palate to less sweetened foods you will start to appreciate the taste of the natural sweetness in foods. My son reported back to me less than a week after eating my suggested food choices and he said he was feeling much better. If your energy level is not optimal during your workday, try prepping some of your meals and snacks with my suggestions and see what a difference it can make in your energy levels. If you would like additional information and guidance, please contact Functionised to set up an appointment with me. I will be back next week with another podcast, have a great day everyone! This is when there is damage of some degree to one or more nerves which may cause a mix of numbness and tingling, sharp or burning pain, specific muscle weakness with the feeling of a joint “giving out”, or lack of sensation as if a limb such as a foot “fell asleep”.; this frequently goes by more common names such as a pinched nerve or nerve entrapment. There are also many that are known for specific nerves and locations such as: Sciatica – Sciatic Nerve in the back of the leg Piriformis Syndrome- Sciatic nerve trapped by the piriformis muscle Thoracic Outlet Syndrome- Multiple nerves in the neck and shoulder Carpal Tunnel – Median nerve in the wrist Ulnar Nerve palsy – Ulnar nerve in the elbow, neck, or shoulder The exact type of pain or sensation is dependant on what part of the nerve, and to what degree its being damaged. These symptoms may arise from many different causes which all may have a different method of treatment, including but not limited to: Diabetes Alcoholism Direct Trauma Various nutrient deficiencies Herniated discs Muscular or boney impingments Medications Heavy Metal posioning Various neurological disorders Here, we are going to focus on a few of the more common causes that Chiropractors see, starting with diabetic neuropathies. Diabetic Neurpathies as the name suggests, comes with diabetes, typically in the mid to later stage, but may appear quite gradually. It typically presents with a “glove and stocking” pattern, meaning it affects mainly the hands and feet. This is thought to be because chronic high blood sugar levels begin to deterioate and damage the small blood vessles, and with damaged arteries and veins, nutrients aren’t able to reach the nerves well and they too start to become damaged. Other than an annoyance of having tingling or painful extremities, it can become more disastrous when dealing with numbness in the feet. If one cant feel their foot well, its hard to tell where in space that foot is and can cause unsteadiness, balance issues, increased risk of falls, and even lead to more serious conditions such as gangrene; lack of blood flow which causes an infection. The best way to treat and prevent this issue is by controlling one’s diabetes and blood sugar levels. However, depending on the severity and diabetic stage, full removal of symptoms may not be attainable. Something important to note, along with the next topic of herniated discs, just because one has diabetes or MRI imaging shows a bulging disc, it doesn’t mean for sure that that is the cause of the neurapathy. Unfortunately, all of us are able to have more than 1 issue at a time, and routinely do, so diagnosing the specific cause to each symptom is a very important task. Sciatica is potentially the most commonly known type of mononeuropathy (damage to one nerve), and is usually assumed to be from a herniated disc in the lumbar spine. However, studies have shown that a great deal of them are asymptomatic, meaning that they don’t cause any symptoms what-so-ever! In fact, a recent MRI study showed that 37% of 20 year olds and a whopping 96% of those over 75yrs have bulging discs that cause no pain or numbness! However, nerve impingment is very common in all populations, and they are frequently caused by muscles being taught and having a myofacial trigger point , or a “knot”, that is pressing on the nerve causing pain or odd sensations. More often than not, when one presents with sciatica, if it is not coming directly from the spine, the nerve is typically trapped by the piriformis or gluteas musculature. Stretching, depending on how its done may make the issue worse. If the nerve is already taught from being pressed, stretching it farther may just damage the nerve more. IASTM (instrament assisted soft tissue mobilization)is a common procedure done at Functionised where a small beveled tool is used to clear out the adhesions that are keeping the muscle knotted. TOS or thoracic outlet syndrome is another common neuropathy, but instead of the back of the leg, either a muscle or upper rib in the neck or under arm in the culprit. This can cause the pain or tingling sensation to go down any aspect of the arm and even into the hands and parts of the fingers, all depending on how many and which nerves are being involved. Alcohol intake and nutrient deficenices are also quite common. Not only is alcohol a neuro toxin, meaning it can directly damage nerves, it also slows and can even stop the absorption of many vitamins and minerals that are required for nerve health such as magnesium, folate, B12, B6, and niacin. If one has a poor diet, eats a lot of processed foods, and limits fresh produce and properly cooked meats, even if not a routine drinker, if a few cocktails are drank the night before, acute neuropathies may ensue. So if you wake up with sharp shooting pain, or a pins and needles type sensation, go to your trusted medical professional, and if in the Colts Neck NJ area, make an appointment here at functionised and you’ll be examined for your exact cause of your troubles to get you on your way to a better and healthier you. I started my career in Title Insurance long before I even knew it... My mom, Liz, was a title searcher and used to bring me into the Hall of Records when I was five years old (she says it was because no one could watch me during the day but I think it was just to help her pull books..no computers back then). What she didn't know back then was that she would later become my office manager! My Uncle and mentor, Nick Beres (rest in peace Uncle Nick), was a title searcher, genealogist, title perfectionist (among many other talents) and took me under his wing when I was young. He had me coloring his many-layered Deed plottings before I hit 3rd grade. He took me all over the United States searching for heirs of New Jersey property owners to clear title. He taught me how to search titles (the right way). He served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines and taught me how to run a business like a tight ship. He taught me honesty and integrity and for that, I couldn't thank him enough. I founded Meridian Title Agency Inc. in 1989 with those same values and have helped thousands and thousands of homeowners purchase and refinance their homes and businesses. It was based on strong relationships, word of mouth referrals and doing the right things the right way. Quite simply, honesty, communication and trust are the foundation of any relationship and those values will never change. I chose to give up the administrative end of the business and found a new home at All Ahead Title as they have the same values I was brought up on and have an amazing team. I am a guest lecturer at Brookdale Community College and Fairleigh Dickinson as well as lecturing for the Academy of Continuing Education for the Professions and the New Jersey Legal Training Academy and a proud member of Coastal LeTip of Colts Neck.

Chlorophyll The Miracle Cure All Mike Brandon People take many supplements for many reasons, sometimes they are justified, and sometimes they are just well marketed. Even with supplements that I know have been proven to work, I like asking people why exactly they are taking something. The answers I get range from highly educated to head scratchingly confusing. I was with a friend at a local supplement store, and she reached for “Liquid Chlorophyll”, so I tossed the question at her and she rattled off a few dozen homeopathic reasons for taking it. I must have zoned out because she starred at me and asked if I think she is wasting her money, and I told her that I'm not sure, but I have a better answer for her now. First of all, what is it that we are talking about? Chlorophyll is a natural pigment in plants that allows them to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis. It is jam packed full of vitamins and minerals/antioxidants like vitamins a,c,e,k, beta carotene, mg, iron, k+ ca+ and some omega 3's. Naturally we get it in our diet mostly through dark leafy greens and algae; It is fat soluble. However it is “unstable”, meaning that it degrades easily. Cooking it destroys most of the chlorophyll, as well as freezing produce (destroys about 50% and 30% respectively). So in supplements, it is slightly modified into a water soluble form called chlorophyllin. At the time of this writing, there was no found sources stating if chlorophyllin still has the same mineral content as chlorophyll. An interesting and potentially clinically relevant note, is that the chlorophyll structure is very similar to our body's heme, which is what carries our O2 throughout our body in our blood cells. The major difference is that chlorophyll has magnesium in the center of the molecule whereas heme has iron. So just like most homeopathic remedies, there is a laundry list of conditions and ailments that chlorophyll/chlorophyllin has been used for, but lets hit some of the research to see what they say. Though it has been heavily researched, it's only been done on a few of the proposed benefits, but lets get the disproven ones out of the way first. One of the major things it is advertised for is a natural deodorant. It supposedly lowers body odor, bad breath, and “fecal odor” by taking supplements orally. For those of you that hope to take plant blood to make you smell better, Im sorry to inform you that it doesn't appear to work. Granted, these studies were all done using the supplement form and not natural chlorophyll, so with food sources there is still hope because some studies have shown high produce eaters to have less body odor, but they also tend to be smaller, more slender individuals which could also play a factor. Supplementation may also help suppress hunger. When on a high carb diet, chlorophyill can affect satiety hormones like cholecytokinin, ghrelin, and insulin. This hasn't been shown effective on low carb, high fat diets however which already give major satiety benefits. Onto the brighter side, both forms appear to help with cheleating; that is they bind to some heavy metals, toxins, and maybe even some pesticides. It's possible that chlorophyll doesn't even get absorbed, that it just releases the vitamins and minerals, then binds to toxins and the body discards it, but this is yet to be known. A big difference between the two forms is in their potential for cancer prevention. Chlorophyll appears to change tumor DNA to make it more susceptible to chemotherapeutic agents and drugs like hydroxyurea, where chlorophyllin does not. This may be a reason as to why studies that look at high meat diets (that are low in produce) have greatly increased risks for cancer, but that has yet to be fully tested. It is a great anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and may alone give a lot of vegetables their nutritional power. IV chlorophyll helps with chronic pancreatitis, as well as systemic edema, and potentially for joint swelling as well. It has also been spoken of as a great skin health supplement, and this seems to hold up well. Ointments with chlorophyllin do appear to help with some types of acne, as well as oral supplementation of both chlorophyll and chlorophyllin help with sun protection. Only caveat is that though they were well done studies, there aren't many and they were all on darker skin tone subjects, so its unsure how well it will help different complexions, but it still good news. But to wrap up and answer the original question of is it a waste of money on this supplement, I have a wish washy response. Though the supplement form does seem to help with a few of the projected benefits, food form, as almost always, is proven here to be far better, with the highest sources being spinach, sprouts, and parsley. Especially on a specific case note of this individual being vegan, there is the built in assumption that she is probably eating enough produce. However, dosages and bioavailability/absorption hasn't been effectively studied, and side effects at very high doses are minimal, so it shouldn't hurt much. To note, there has been no shown side effects from high amounts of chlorophyll, but water soluble chlorophyllin may cause gastric distress, discoloration of the tongue, urine, and feces. So as long as you are okay with potential stomach cramps and funny color excretions, it appears fine. Gum Prevents Cavities Jim Goetz I have been extremely fortunate to have zero cavities in my mouth. I attest this to having chewed gum all my life and not just until the sweet is gone. I began chewing Bazooka gum when I was young and I would chew the same piece for days, taking it out only to eat. Chewing increases saliva production, reducing oral bacteria, removing plaque and improving muscles of mastication, which has nothing to do with anti- cavity but aids in complete digestion of food. Added benefits of chewing gum include: decreased anxiety increased alertness decreased appetite Side effects of long term gum chewing are headaches and TMJ pain. However, in the years I have been a chronic gum chewer, I have yet to experience any of these symptoms. Happy #cellhacking (This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by, or associated with Instagram) A post shared by BioHackerNation (@biohackhumans) on Jul 5, 2018 at 2:57am PDT Are Eggs Healthy or Dangerous? Jim Goetz There has been a debate for quite some time on the fact of eggs being healthy or not. Some say eggs have high amounts of cholesterol in the yolk and therefore negatively affects your cholesterol levels. However, a plethora of research has shown dietary cholesterol does not significantly effect your total cholesterol levels. Furthermore, increasing research has shown cholesterol levels do not cause heart disease. Those on statins live shorter than those who are not on statins. Those with low cholesterol levels may have an increased incidence of Alzheimers disease and other degenerative neurological and hormonal disorders. The thing about cholesterol is that is forms hormones in the body such as pregnenalone, which converts to cortisol, DHEA, testosterone and a plethora of other hormones. When individuals go on fat free diets and get their cholesterol super low, hormone function is decreased and activities of daily living may change. The egg can be broken down to the egg white and the yolk. The egg white is mostly protein with some B- vitamins. There's also another substance in it called, alvidin. This protein binds the B vitamins, decreasing their bioavailability. The biohack to increase absorption of the B- vitamins (if you are looking for B- vitamins from your egg, is to heat (cook) the egg. The egg yolk (that yellow stuff so many discard), is chock filled with nutrients. The egg yolk contains far less protein than the whites but does in fact have a higher ratio of leucine, the amino acid responsible for protein synthesis in the body and is an essential amino acid. 46% of the yolk is oleic acid (omega- 9 found in olive oil), 38% saturated fat and 16% polyunsaturated fat. The polyunsaturated fat ratios depend greatly on how the chicken was raised. If a chicken is fed grains, the ratio of omega-6 will be far higher. This is pro-inflammatory. If the chicken was pasture fed, the amount of omega-6 will be reduced. Egg yolks also contain catotenoids (lutein and zeaxanthin) (improves vision) and they are a huge source of choline (numerous benefits). Some believe that eating eggs causes heart disease. There have been numerous studies finding zero correlation between egg consumption and heart disease. Some observational studies may refute this but randomized controlled trials back this up. Let's go with RCT's based on the heiarchy of good information. It should also be noted that egg consumption does not increase weight gain. That's right! Eating fat does not make you fat!!! It may be prudent to have an ALCAT test done to see if one may have any food sensitivities to eggs or any other food or environmental characteristic that may cause an inflammatory state. If there's no increased white blood cell count with eggs (or any other food), then enjoy as they appear healthy. Ambidexterity Dr. Mike Brandon Being ambidextrous, that is being able to use both hands with equal mastery, is something many strive for, especially in the world of sports and athletics. Only about 1% of the population is ambidextrous, with right handers dominating the population with about 90% and lefties at about 10% Most people who believe they are ambidextrous, especially if done through training, is actually ambisinistral. These individuals can do many or most tasks proficiently with both hands, but one side is better than the other, and it may switch from right to left depending on the activity. With a quick internet search for why to become ambidextrous, it was surprising to see many sources done showing that there are some notable disadvantages, and there are plenty of professionals who claim its neurologically poor and potentially dangerous to do so, though there's a major catch. It's been shown many times that those who are BORN ambidextrous have much higher risk of showing signs of disorders like ADHD, dyslexia, perform lower by academic standards, have poorer emotional control/anger management, increased risk for schizophrenia, and other cognitive/social disorders. There have been no studies found checking for those who trained for ambidexterity and correlations to cognitive changes. It is believed that these complications may occur due to the way our brains process information. Right or left handed individuals tend to have one side more dominant, and the two halves appear to split “brain duties” more. For example, its believed the right side leads with creativity and the left with language and writing. Those born ambidextrous appear to share these responsibilities more between their left and right brain by bypassing the center structure, the corpus collusum. So its thought that information for many tasks have to switch back and forth from the right and left which leaves room for, let's call it a processing error, which could lead to the signs listed above. Our species and early ancestors appear to have been more ambidextrous than the roughly 1% today. This suggests an evolutionary change to allow our brains to subjugate tasks more efficiently, but probably was involved with the overall growth of our cortex and higher executive centers. This would give the advantage of having the same tasks done in 1 side of the brain so there is less back and forth of information, and less neurons used to create a task, in theory making it faster and easier for us to perform. Interestingly enough, left handers (about 80% of them) have less single sided brain activity, but not to the extend of congenital ambidextrous individuals, and this is a partial theory as to why more creative persons, like musicians, artists, etc, are more likely to be left handed. The big question here is does training yourself to use both sides of your body with equality cause any of the disadvantages that appear with congenital double handiness? Though some people worry about the possibility of it, there were no studies found that attempted to follow someone's brain patterns through ambidextrous training. The larger question is, would it even be possible for us to do so? If you are 30 years old, and have been right hand dominate the whole time, can your left side catch up? Would it take another 30 years? The potential for cognitive symptoms certainly is a reason for concern on this topic, but from what was researched, I see minimal merit in it at this time. Potentially if children went through ambidextrous training we would know more, since their brains develop and adapt monumentally more and faster than adults and they have had far less time to create neural habits and connections, but then doing a study this way could be deemed unethical if it did result in neurological/cognitive side effects. There are a few simple suggestions to try if you are interested in becoming more abisinistral. Most people suggest simply changing your desk around with the mouse on the other side, begin writing with your off hand, open doors off handed, and really just switching your common movement patterns to increase neuoplasticity for that action. My favorite/most frustrating attempt was trying to cook and eat left handed. Athletes everywhere from boxers to hockey players learn to use both hands very well at many tasks to improve their game, and I know of a few people who have learned to write exceptionally well with both hands. Is this going to create a problem? I don't think so based off of results I have seen and what I know about the brain, but perhaps Ill be proven wrong once research is pushed more on this topic. But until then, perhaps I'll rebel by making my breakfast left handed only, even if it ends up with my omelet turning into scrambled eggs the first several times. Fish Oil Jim Goetz Fish oils have long been touted as a fix for cardiovascular heart disease. Take your omega-3's and stave off a heart attack, is what we have been told. Pharmaceutical companies are now trying their best to get a handle on what he general public has been doing now for decades. But good research studies have failed to show any benefit whatsoever in reducing a cardiovascular event when taking fish oils. Why is this? Perhaps it is due to the fact that serving sizes used in research and supplement bottles is only 500mg to 1g. Perhaps the quality of the fish oil is poor. New studies being looked at are going to have 4g to 7g as the serving size for the fish oil servings. World renown strength and conditioning coach Charles Poliquin did a case study on himself using a whopping 40g of fish oils daily. No known negative side effects were found. However, blood work shows indicators of reduced cardiovascular event markers. So perhaps it may very well be the amount of fish oil being consumed that is the kicker here. biohackhumans.com Find us: Instagram (@biohackhumans) Facebook (@biohackhumans) Twitter (@biohackhumans) Tumblr (@biohackhumans) Contact Us: support@biohackhumans.com
Jim Goetz Michael Brandon Chantea Goetz This episode was recorded from our brand new studio at Functionised Integrative Therapeutics (FIT) (Get #functionised) in Colts Neck, New Jersey. We want to thank FIT for allowing us to use their facility for this and future podcasts. We look forward to a very healthy and productive relationship with their world class staff. Gyms are often though to be a place to achieve prime health. With the proper goals, plan and accountability, this is quite possible. Unfortunately, 95% of people will fail at their goals and 100% of the 95% believe that they are different than others. They will assuradely achieve their goals without having any actual goals or any aclue in what they are doing. What is even crazier, is the dangrous conditions that exist int he first place. Flooring and equipment often have PCB's emitted that is a high toxin. Combine that with excedd carbon dioxide emitted from heavier breathing and the air becomes quite unhealthy. Many gyms do not have proper ventalation causing severe respiratory problems for members. Solutions are large fans, HEPA filters and plants. Many gyms now have smothie bars, which is seen as a healthy thing. The amounts of protein and sugar often added to these smoothies is no better than having a banana split from Baskin Robins after ones workout. Even the protein bars are often no better than glorified candy bars with added protein. It is counter productive to put in such an effort at the gym only to pour sludge back into your body. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is being touted at the most efficient way to train due to the shortened duration of exercise. The unfortunate part of this is that most novice fitness enthusiasts are in no condition to put forth such a hard effort that often utilizes ballistic movements. To truly adhere to HIIT, one must raise their heart rate to 90% of their max for a short period and then allow it to go back to resting. The efforts one must put forth in order to do this should be monitored (which most do not) and adhered to (which most do not). HIIT training has indeed been shown to be of benefit to many. One must understand what they are doing though to not only train optimally but to avoid injury. Classes such as spin abuse equipment leading to injury. Push ups on a bike for instance put a strain on the equipment, which can beak and cause injury to the participant. I have seen it happen and it coudl be avoidable. Controversey often exists over machines as the novice flocks to machines. This is due to the fact that machiens appear simple to use. There are picutres and the machines move in only one plane of motion Unfortunately they move in only one plane of motion. Repeated movements such as this lead to a decreased range of motion, a build up of fibrotic tissue and ultimately injury. Proprioception is in no way developed and an individual ultimately will decline in their potential. Some may say that machines are better than using nothing. That is like the idea that eating crisco and drinking motor oil is better than eating nothing. I am not saying never to use machines. What I am saying is that there is a time and place for everything and relying on only one thing is most likely going to lead to burnout, injury, and failure. One does not need to only workout in the gym. The human body can move in places such as the beach, parks, etc. The quality of air should be better, and full body calisthenics (weight can be added by means such as a vest or bringing some weights with you), have been used for centuries to create the most fiece and dominant of humans. Gyms were designed to help individuals discover better health. If done properly, they may do just this. On the flip side, if one goes into a gym with blind ignorance, money and time will be lost and frustration and the bad kind of pain will be gained.
