Life is full of sweet highs and terrible merlots on today's Script Apart as Alexander Payne – director of movies like Election, The Holdovers, Nebraska and About Schmidt – joins us to raise a glass to an indie drama that has aged like a fine wine. The brilliant Sideways was released in 2004 and soon earned four Academy Award nominations, taking home Best Adapted Screenplay. It won six Independent Spirit Awards, was picked up for Japanese remake and instigated a huge tourism boom in the California wine country that forms the film's backdrop. Co-written with frequent collaborator Jim Taylor, it told the tale of two friends on a wine tasting expedition, each struggling to break out of a certain middle-aged, middle-class male malaise (one of Alexander's screenwriting specialties). The result? A dramedy widely regarded as one of the best of its decade. The film saw Paul Giamatti play Miles – an aspiring author whose dreams of literary stardom are misfiring, much like his love life. Recently divorced, he and his old college friend Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church, hop in the car to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. But Jack – a washed-up soap opera actor – is intent on hooking up with women as part of one last sexual hurrah before marriage. Caught up in the mix as the pair quarrel and cause trouble is Virginia Madsen's Maya, a barmaid that Miles strikes up feelings for. Professing those feelings in a serious way, though, is difficult for the wine aficionado and English teacher – a man so mired in regret about what was, he's unable to grasp the now and what could still be. Much is often made about the recurring quote-unquote “losers” that lead Alexander's films, and what they might have to say about modern American man. The filmmaker, though, has always been pretty resolute that his movies centre the downtrodden and dopey simply because, deep down, these films are comedies – a genre the historically sides with the little guy, going all the way back to Charlie Chaplin. But how does he define the mix of pathos and hilarity that fill his characters? Where does Alexander's affinity towards road trip stories come from? What's so relatable and real about Miles' fear that his literary dreams might amount to nothing – and that a life of feeling like a loser awaits? And what was the inspiration behind the film's beautiful ending – a knock at the door that we as an audience never see answered? All is revealed across a fascinating thirty-minute sit down with the auteuer.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Grumpy Old Men but they can fart fire! In theory, Supervized could have been a quirky, heartfelt exploration of aging superheroes grappling with retirement, purpose, and the loss of their glory days. In practice, it's a tedious, joyless slog that squanders its promising premise on cheap gags, uninspired storytelling, and a finale so absurd it feels like the filmmakers gave up trying to make sense of their own plot. The story follows a group of retired superheroes living in a nursing home, a setting rife with potential for meaningful commentary or even genuinely funny moments. Instead, we're treated to a series of groan-worthy jokes about old age that feel like they were ripped from a 1990s sitcom. The humor never rises above the most obvious low-hanging fruit: people forgetting things, struggling with bodily functions, and being generally "out of touch." It's like the writers typed "old people jokes" into a search engine and just pasted the results into the script. The cast—featuring the likes of Tom Berenger, Beau Bridges, and Fionnula Flanagan—does its best to bring some life to the flat material, but even seasoned actors can only do so much with dialogue this uninspired. Berenger's attempt to imbue his character with gravitas falls flat amidst the ham-fisted writing, while Bridges is left to play the clichéd role of the wacky sidekick who barely lands a laugh. As the film stumbles through its predictable and uninspired first two acts, you might hope for a twist or some emotional payoff to salvage the experience. Unfortunately, what you get instead is a third act so spectacularly stupid it feels like a parody of itself. The plot collapses into a nonsensical mess involving a villainous conspiracy and a half-baked action sequence that looks cheaper than your average cosplay convention. Supervized is a movie for no one. It takes an almost-interesting concept and smothers it with tired jokes, clunky dialogue, and an insulting lack of imagination. If you want to feel crappy about getting old, there are better options—watch About Schmidt or even The Bucket List. At least those films respect their audience enough to deliver something resembling insight or emotional depth. Avoid Supervized at all costs. It's not just a bad superhero movie; it's an affront to anyone who was hoping for even the faintest spark of creativity.
Here she is bois, here she is world, here's June! We are here with Oscar-nominee June Squibb. You Might Know Her From Thelma, Nebraska, About Schmidt, The Humans, Hubie Halloween, In & Out, Girls, Inside Out 2, and Broadway productions of Gypsy and Waitress. We were delighted to talk to 95-year-old June about her role in the action-dramedy Thelma for which she absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination. From fearlessly driving a scooter to charming the late Richard Roundtree, June opened up about her very first “lead role” and the difference in being number one on the callsheet. We also got the intel on her time as a replacement for Electra in the original (yes, original) Broadway production of Gypsy opposite Ethel Merman, returning to Broadway in a gender-reversed casting as Josie in Waitress, her rapport with director Alexander Payne (who she had to audition for AGAIN for role in Nebraska), and her upcoming lead role in Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut Eleanor the Great. This week we're going to California wine country and we are NOT GOING TO DRINK ANY F**KING MERLOT! That's right friends – we're discussing Alexander Payne's “Sideways”. Joey couldn't make the trip to the vineyards this week, but Melissa St. John tagged in to help discuss the pathetic nature of the characters, Paul Giamatti's incredible performance, and Britt's literary corner and just how petty the author of the book was. Also, this week Adam recommends “About Schmidt” (available to rent on Amazon), Britt recommends “Il Sorpasso” (currently on The Criterion Channel), Melissa recommends “Twisters” (available on most VOD platforms), and Joey recommends “Drinking Buddies” (free on Prime, Hoopla, Tubi). On this episode, I spoke to costume designer Wendy Chuck about her work on The Holdovers. Chuck has collaborated with some of the film industry's most celebrated talents including Alexander Payne, Tom McCarthy, Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Jane Campion. Her alchemy with fabric, texture, pattern, and color have brought life to a diverse range of characters on screen: Nebraska's rustic Midwesterners, Election's conniving high-schooler, Twilight's teenage vampires, Spotlight's journalistic team, and the inhabitants of Downsizing's miniaturized world. In 1994, the Australian Film Institute nominated Chuck for Best Achievement in Costume for the period piece Country Life (1994) starring Greta Sacchi and Sam Neill. Other awards followed including a win from the Costume Designers Guild for About Schmidt (2003), and nominations for The Descendents (2011) and Nebraska (2014). Chuck has enjoyed a long standing working relationship with acclaimed writer/director Alexander Payne and has served as costume designer on all but one of his features. They have collaborated on hits like Sideways (2004) starring Paul Giamatti and Election (1999) starring Reese Witherspoon. She is currently working on Disney's Lilo and Stitch (2024) and her own capsule collection.
I am thrilled to have Scout G join me for her SIXTH appearance in the Plastic Microphone Studios! Today, we are diving into the fascinating world of the one and only Kathy Bates. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, Kathy Bates honed her craft studying theater at Southern Methodist University before making the bold move to New York City to pursue her acting dreams. She started with minor stage roles before making her big break in the film Taking Off (1971). But it was her unforgettable performance as Annie Wilkes in the thriller Misery (1990) that truly solidified her as a powerhouse in the industry, earning her the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actress. Kathy Bates has continued to impress audiences with her talent, receiving Oscar nominations for her roles in Primary Colors, About Schmidt, and Richard Jewell. Not only has she conquered the big screen, but Kathy Bates has also made her mark on television, winning two Emmy Awards for her outstanding performances. Her first Emmy was for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Two and a Half Men, and her second was for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for American Horror Story: Coven. She has received Emmy nominations for her work in The Late Shift, Annie, Six Feet Under, Warm Springs, Harry's Law, American Horror Story: Freak Show, and American Horror Story: Hotel. Kathy Bates is a true talent, captivating audiences with her versatility and depth as an actress. Join us as we celebrate this incredible woman and her remarkable career! We're starting the new year with a little break from our year-by-year examination, and instead we're talking about one of our favorite director's filmographies: Alexander Payne. Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler cover all of his features, from Citizen Ruth (1996) up through the Holdovers (2023). They talk about the themes and character tropes that pop up throughout these films, what works for them and what doesn't about Payne's style, and which characters they relate to most. Other movies discussed in this episode: Election (1999), About Schmidt (2003), Sideways (2004), the Descendants (2011), Nebraska (2013), Downsizing (2017).
On this week's episode of Editors on Editing, Glenn is joined by Kevin Tent. Beginning with Citizen Ruth, Kevin has edited all of Alexander Payne's exceptional films, including Election, About Schmidt, Sideways and Nebraska. For all of which he was nominated for the Eddie. Direct Talk - Suoraa puhetta ohjaamisesta Podcast by Finn Andersson Jakso 2: Olli Rönkä Ohjaaja Olli Rönkä on tehnyt pitkän uran mainoselokuvamaailman huipulla Suomessa ja ulkomailla. Cannes Blockbusters are not the only unjuried film festival slate in the world. So having exhausted this avenue, we turn to New York Film Festival, famously uncompetitive, to inject a little competition and conflict into their whole affair. The slate? Films that played in the opening slot of NYFF in the new millennium so far. Returning to join us as President of our Jury? The great DAVID SIMS of BLANK CHECK with Griffin and David. Together we figure out what it is About Schmidt, how to split the David Fincher of it all, and how we can only give one award to Carnage. All this and some general chat about the shape of TIFF and NYFF this year. The movies under consideration are HERE Follow David on twitter @davidlsims Our twitter is @CannesIKickIt Our instagram is @CIKIPod Our letterboxd is CIKIPod Enjoying the show? Career Q&A with June Squibb. Moderated by Anthony Breznican, Entertainment Weekly. "Nebraska" might be a father-son story, but it is June Squibb who instigates some of the most remarkable moments -- she takes on Kate Grant's razor tongue, wicked sense of humor and impenetrable strength as a wife and mother devoted to her family through thick and thin. The Illinois native made her debut in "Alice" and played Jack Nicholson's wife in Payne's "About Schmidt."
A Safe Place is Henry Jaglom's directorial debut. As a BBS Production, and with Jack Nicholson a key player in the BBS world, this little known indie feature would naturally offer Jack a supporting role. This week, Sarah is back with our "lost" episode!

The year is 2003 and the nominees are: 1. Kathy Bates - About Schmidt 2. Queen Latifah - Chicago 3. Meryl Streep - Adaptation 4. Julianne Moore - The Hours 5. Catherine Zeta-Jones - Chicago - In 2003 Catherine Zeta-Jones won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her first and only nomination for Chicago. During the Golden Globes she was campaigned as a lead and then later went to supporting for the BAFTA's and Oscars. This was an interesting year because Adaptation revived Meryl Streep's career. A lot of people expected Streep or Julianne Moore to be Zeta-Jones' biggest threat. Queen Latifah was also nominated for Chicago and Kathy Bates was nominated for the famous hot tub scene in About Schmidt. We continue our long dreadful march to Christmas with another spirited pick-me-up of a family film in ABOUT SCHMIDT. This Alexander Payne flick stars Jack Nicholson as a man traveling across the country to stop his daughter's wedding to a "nincompoop" who bears a striking resemblance to one of our beloved co-hosts. This was pointed out by our spirited and charming guest TIM COSTA of FIRST TIME WATCHERS who finds himself at a loss on what to do when confronted with a nude Kathy Bates in a hot tub. As usual, your hosts Dave and Mike know exactly what to do and you will too once you listen to the latest episode of THE GRAND GESTURE!Facebook/Instagram/Twitter: @grandgesturepodHosts: Dave @pccasestudy Mike @warmachinehorseEmail us your favorite romantic grand gestures in film at grandgesturepod@gmail.com

In this week's Movie Date podcast, Rafer and Kristen review an Oscar contender and a holiday popcorn flick. "Nebraska" is the latest from Alexander Payne, who is best known for “About Schmidt,” “Sideways” and “The Descendants." His new movie, starring Bruce Dern, is about a father-son trip to rural Nebraska. And "The Best Man Holiday" is the sequel to the 1999 African-American romantic comedy, “The Best Man.” It revisits the same group of old college friends now that they're well into adulthood. In addition to reviewing the new releases, Rafer and Kristen respond to some angry listener mail and help a listener in Canada who's in bad need of Movie Therapy. As always, if you like what we do, review and rate us on iTunes!
