In episode 37 of the National Health Executive podcast, we were joined by the former chair of the National Institute for Health and Car Excellence, Sir David Haslam, to discuss the current state of the NHS and whether it needs to be rebooted.During the podcast, David discussed the piece he and David Pendleton, professor of leadership at Henley Business School, authored for the National Health Executive magazine, where he argues that the UK health sector needs to focus its financial support on bolstering primary care and community care on the one side, and social care on the other.David said: “We came up with this vision: if you think of the health system like a bookshelf, you've got the hospitals as the big books on the shelf, but if your bookends aren't working effectively then everything tumbles down. And the bookends at one end are primary care; the other end is social care.“If both of those aren't supported then the whole system is going to fall apart.”Listen to the full podcast to hear David's thoughts on prevention, the UK's health spending and more about how leaders can rebalance the NHS for the future.

The intro is fake news. John isn't at the kitchen table--and The Peaches isn't co-hosting. David Pendleton is a long time friend of the family and a gifted ventriloquist. (That's the type of skill that translates well in an audio-only podcast, doesn't it?) The men talk about various projects they're working on, but they DON'T want to be "intentional" with their conversation. (Ew.) David wants the conversation to be interesting for you, Neighbor. But--John isn't very worried about that... Cue the unscripted discussion now! -Why do we only call our friends when we have something specific to talk about? (Or is that just a "Male Tendency"?) -What are the differences between "real conversation" and social media speeches? (And what's up with texting?) -The lack of human interaction is impacting how people actually THINK and process reality. AND MORE!...including some discussion about prison sentences and the death penalty. You can find more information about David Pendleton's comedy by visiting anythingcantalk.com. Also, reach out to John Branyan by emailing nextdoor@johnbranyan.com. Thanks for visiting with us, Neighbor!

The rather amazing David Pendleton and myself have a conversation about the NHS, this is something that is dear to David's heart and he really has a deep understanding of the topic. This is David's article on Linked In, on the topic: Click here.It is no secret that the National Health Service, or NHS, is facing numerous challenges in recent times. One major issue is the shortage of funding and resources. The NHS has been struggling to keep up with increasing demand for services, rising costs of medical supplies and treatments, and an aging population. This has led to overcrowded hospitals, longer waiting times for appointments and procedures, and a decrease in the quality of care.Another challenge is the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses. The high levels of stress, long hours, and low pay have led to burnout and a decrease in morale among healthcare workers. This, in turn, is leading to high levels of staff turnover, which further exacerbates the problem.Furthermore, the NHS is also facing a significant backlog of patients waiting for treatments, surgeries, and appointments. This is due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put an immense strain on the healthcare system. The pandemic has also highlighted the need for a more integrated and coordinated approach to healthcare, both within the NHS and with other health and social care providers. In addition, the NHS is facing major issues with regards to technology and data management. The lack of a comprehensive, integrated IT system is leading to duplication of efforts, increased costs, and a decreased ability to deliver effective, efficient care.In conclusion, the NHS is facing a multitude of challenges, including funding and resource constraints, shortage of healthcare professionals, backlogs in patient care, and inadequate technology and data management. Addressing these challenges will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including government, healthcare providers, and the public. In the conversations that David and I have we discuss many things and as such decided to capture them. They won't all have conclusions, however, we hope they add value. To find out more about Guy Bloom and his award winning work in Team Coaching, Leadership Development and Executive Coaching click below. The link to everything CLICK HEREUK: 07827 953814Email: guybloom@livingbrave.com Web: www.livingbrave.com

In this episode we discuss the balance between 'Entitlement and Exploitation'. I was catalysed by the heading: "Stop moaning about hours, City chief tells junior bankers on £70,000: Young mothers work just as hard, rages Xavier Rolet - who rose from sink estate"The sub heading was: Xavier Rolet, the former boss of the London Stock Exchange, who built his career in banking, said graduates had no right to complain about working 80 hours a week because 'that's the business' and 'no one is coercing them'. Not just the NHS but schools, local councils, the police and the prison service have all faced huge challenges keeping the show on the road. Clear leadership has been crucial to this task. Now more than ever our public services need great head teachers, chief constables, great prison governors and hospital directors. But what makes for great leadership in the public sector? How do you make sure organisations are delivering for the public and not squandering hard earned taxes? How do you handle a crisis or navigate the complex relationship with an ever-changing government?Justin Russell is Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Probation. He's spent his life working and learning from inspirational leaders who have done all of these things and more. In this special series for Bridges to the Future, he'll be speaking to just some of those who have survived and thrived at the top to find out how they did it and what they can teach you.

We have SO MANY THINGS TO TALK ABOUT, Neighbor! Tune in next Wednesday for our houseguest episode with David Pendleton with some BREAKING CULTURAL NEWS. There's a scandal related to a respected Christian institution, and you probably aren't even aware of it, yet. But that's why you listen to the Comedian Next Door! So you can be “in the know.” Next, John wants to get to the mail—but he has to suffer the Peaches' sound effects first. (He was so proud of that Mouth Honk last week, and now, suddenly, it's a burden...) Our listener, Pkarlgh, writes to us from Canada using plenty of commas and making several observations about the sad state of our culture. She closes with a question about what to call “healthcare” when it's being controlled by tyrannical professionals who hold political grudges. We have some suggestions, of course. Later, John has a quote from G.K. Chesterton. But it takes awhile for him to read it because we enlist the help of the Podcast Ninja (Luke) to demonstrate a perfect British accent. John eventually shares the quote: “[Jesus] restrained something… I say it with reverence that there was, in this shattering personality, a thread that must be called shyness. There was something He hid from all men when he went up a mountain to pray. There was something that he covered constantly by abrupt silence or impetuous isolation. There was one thing that was too great for God to show us when He walked upon our earth. And I have sometimes fancied that it was his mirth.” We don't want to disagree with the famous Theologian. Buuuuut… we're not sure why he assumes Jesus wasn't mirthful. And that's just the first 15 minutes! We spend the rest of this long-winded episode mildly chastising the Focus on the Family initiative to “Take Your Bible To School.” We propose: take your school to CHURCH and stop trying to sprinkle a little bit of Jesus on top of your secular education… We have much more to say about godless, Secular Humanist education and the public school system. Join the conversation! And, if you want to send us your comments and questions, write to: nextdoor@johnbranyan.com

We're at the kitchen table with good friend and ventriloquist, David Pendleton--but DON'T CALL HIM DAVE! If you've never listened to a conversation with David before, you won't know that he's an expert on German Baptist theology. (It's a long story, Neighbor Pkarlgh. But you can listen to the German Baptist episode of the Comedy Sojourn by clicking here: Scandals, Forgiveness, Foot-washing, and German Baptists ) Today, David gives just a brief description of the baptism ceremony in the German Baptist community--and then we're able to seque nicely into talking about a DIFFERENT kind of fundamentalism which is infecting the culture... That is, Woke Fundamentalism. David has been a staff member at Campus Crusade for Christ since the mid-80's, and he has an insider's perspective to share regarding the recent criticism of (and subsequent apology from) Josh McDowell. David's testimony may or may not include examples from Cru's internal message boards. This is an extended episode detailing how a once strong, faithful organization can become infiltrated by unChristian ideas in a relatively short amount of time. "Here's the important narrative here… if you say that a certain group of people do not have equal opportunity, you cannot then attribute it to something that is true within their culture. You always have to attribute it to [being] because they have been victimized." --David Pendleton Join us at the table! You can find David's website at anythingcantalk.com Find John at johnbranyan.com

How do you stay connected to the people in your organisation when the reality is you have climbed so high up the hierarchy that you in truth don't have a finger on the pulse?Join myself and David Pendleton DPhil Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School. They say the queen thinks the world smells of paint as there is someone 3 metres in front of her making sure she thinks the world is perfect. Of course it's a metaphor, however its one that rings true for many of us.Consider how perhaps you present the reality of situations up the food chain. As that perspective is passed higher and higher, then how sterilised does that truth become?Perhaps the data is correct, but the power of the message is lost.David and I saw a report on how "General Lord Dannatt was left horrified by a shocking video of an RAF initiation ceremony" and it made us think of how when we heard about the Volkeswagon emissions scandal, the then CEO Martin Winterkorn proclaimed innocence to the issue. So you can know or not know. Either way you are either lying, being willfully blind or negligent, none of this lands well. What does it take to stay connected......and honest? To connect with Guy Bloom in regards to Leadership Development, Executive Coaching, Team Effectiveness or appearing on the podcast: CLICK HERE and to connect to David Pendleton: CLICK HERE

What is it that one has to think about as a leader/manager when it comes to morality? Is it fair to say, "All is fair in love and war?" or is that too convenient and lacking in social responsibility? Perhaps it is too naive when the aim of the game is to come out on top!All these questions, pondered, thought about and discussed in this episode of The Professor & The Coach. North Parade's favourite philosopher, Paul Norcross, chats with Les Hall and David Pendleton, about the historical curiosities of football in the former Yugoslavia. From Trieste where, in the same stadium, two teams played concurrently in the Italian and Yugoslavian leagues; Zagreb where a player's Cantona-esque drop-kick on a policemen has been memorialised as the beginning of the homeland war; to European Champions Red Star Belgrade being defeated by Bradford City!
In the 21st century Association Football dominates global sport. The People's Game has swept all before it, but its birth in nineteenth century Britain was marked by division and conflict. Attempts to agree a formalised rule book broke the game of football into differing codes. Hence the establishment of the Football Association and Rugby Union. A fracture of the latter brought forth the Rugby League. In other parts of the English speaking world nationalised variants appeared in the shape of American Football, Aussie Rules, Canadian Football and Gaelic Football. Professor Tony Collins of De Monfort and Beijing Universities is recognised as the world's leading rugby historian. In this podcast Tony chats with Dr David Pendleton about his book 'How Football Began'.

We tell some insider stories about other comics to demonstrate that you only talk smack about the ones you love. I bungled a joke recently and I'm not ashamed to admit it. David Pendleton explains the difference between an enclave and a closet. We discuss techniques for making people feel unwelcome in church. We learn how to tell German Baptists from Amish (sort of). And we discover the lengths to which some people will go to get their feet washed. This is the longest podcast I've done so far. Apparently, the ventriloquist is not at a loss for words. Luke 13:22-30 22 And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" And He said to them, 24"Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open for us,' and He will answer and say to you, 'I do not know you, where you are from,' 26 then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.' 27 But He will say, 'I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.' 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out. 29 They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God. 30 And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last."
Luke 10:1-12,16-20
Gospel passage: Luke 9:51-62
Fr. David poses the question, what's so good about Good Friday?
Fr. David explores the tension between the first and final coming of Christ into the world. Unless he reaches our hearts in his first coming, we cannot long for his final coming. Come, Lord Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
Dr. Pendleton reflects on sections of Isaiah 52 & 53.
Fr. David works from the premise that the Transfiguration is partly about preparation to journey with Jesus toward the cross.
Sharing the Gospel of Jesus is all about sharing our lives with others. This is more costly than mere words. The Gospel of Jesus is to never be left to words but incarnated into the fabric of life with others.
What does it like like to take up one's cross, deny oneself and follow Jesus. Fr. Pendleton suggests Paul's description in Romans 12 of a counter-cultural Christian community.
Fr. David explores the historic way of speaking about God in" three persons and one being" up against other unorthodox views of God. The Holy Trinity is the essence of the unity of the Body of Christ. As we dwell in the Trinity we find our source of unity with each other.
In John 20, Jesus appears to the fearful disciples, behind locked doors in an upper room. He gives his peace and blows into them the breath of life to share the Good News of true life offered to all, including the forgiveness of sins. Too often Christians are experienced as exclusive and judgmental rather than full of risen life and forgiving love. This message explores the chasm between what we believe and what we live and communicate. Text: John 20:19-31; I Peter 1:3-9
