What can an attorney tell us about peace-making? A lot! His big claim: In 90 seconds he can extinguish any argument (and teach you to do the same). What is leadership level listening? • Type One Listening is to get information that you can use and then close out the conversation • Type Two Listening is about validating the other person, making the other person feel heard. When you're flooded with emotions, yours or someone else's, try Affective Labeling. A leader's job is to provide Focus, Direction, and Safety. We can only identify others' emotions if we're calm. There are several layers of emotions that act as triggers. These include: • Anger • Disrespect • Fear • Disgust • Shame • Abandonment To get to the heart of another person, get them to tell you their story. Ask open ended questions. Seek to observe four non-voluntary responses: • Head • Nod Verbal Responses • Relaxed Shoulders • Sigh Doug's book: Deescalate: How to Calm Anyone in 90 Seconds or Less Reach out at: www.DougNoll.com and directly at Doug@DougNoll.com

This week's guest is appearing on the show for a second time, Doug Noll is a mediator and peacemaker who teaches people how to listen and validate others' emotions, which he calls Listening Others Into Existence. He believes everyone has a deep need to be heard and validated and that listening and validating someone's emotions is the most powerful and precious gift you can give, costing you nothing. Our culture however teaches us that emotions are bad, and we have learned from our parents to repress our emotions. This causes people to feel uncomfortable when someone is crying or angry, not knowing how to console a grieving friend, dealing with a screaming child, or avoiding hard conversations. As a result, people do not live in emotional safety, are scared of emotions, and are even afraid to admit to their fears, leading to misery, unhappiness, and despair, especially in relationships. Doug's life became one big struggle as he was born nearly deaf, almost blind, and crippled with two club feet. He learned that emotions were not safe, and he became numb to his emotions. However, his work as a mediator and peacemaker forced him to confront human emotion straight on, and he discovered how to listen to others into existence. He taught inmates serving life sentences how to be peacemakers in maximum security prisons and then taught his skills at the highest levels of government in Washington, D.C. Today, he focuses on teaching emotional competency and de-escalation skills based on how our brains are hard-wired, which he believes is a solid foundation of empirical neuroscience. Doug Noll and Laurel Coffer started the Prison Peace Project in 2009, which has trained over 1000 women and 1000 men to be peacemakers and mediators. The project has expanded to 15 California prisons, a prison in Connecticut, 14 prisons in Greece, and startups in Italy and Nairobi. The curriculum teaches inmates how to listen, de-escalate, conduct listening peace circles, make durable agreements, coach people, manage strong emotions, and morally reengage people who are morally disengaged. The project has had a 0% recidivism rate, and none of its students have reoffended. The speaker discusses their work teaching incarcerated individuals conflict resolution skills, which has led to a transformation in their behavior and a shift towards promoting peace. They explain their technique of cognitive empathy, which involves reflecting on someone's emotions to them, and how it can lead to a calming effect on the brain. The meeting discussed the use of "you" and "I" statements in communication, with the conclusion that "you" statements are ineffective and "I" statements should be used to express one's own emotions. The importance of emotional competency was also emphasized, with the distinction made between emotional intelligence (a measure) and emotional confidence (a set of skills). The meeting discussed how emotional incompetence is passed down from parents to children, causing emotional stunting in adults. The solution is to learn emotional competence and identify triggers through environmental cues and affect labeling. Doug offers public speaking, coaching, and workshops on listening skills and emotional confidence. His goal is to help people become better listeners and spread peace. Co-Host Doug Noll (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/noll) It's not uncommon for us as men to imagine ourselves as warriors. But the wisest warriors know a valid war isn't about the fighting, it's about the peace at the end. Even soldiers are often tasked as peacekeeping forces. Popular guest Doug Noll returns to discuss how we as men are actually at our best when we're peacemakers. This guy works in maximum security prisons teaching murderers how to be exactly that, with great success...so you know he's on to something. Indeed, Doug hits the ground running with a full-scale explanation of why violence is perhaps the least evolved of possible masculine responses. And when it comes to keeping peace with the women in your life, wait until you hear Doug explain his genius concept of 'listening your girlfriend into existence'. Then, hang in there for Doug's explanation of how another concept can help propel your career as well as your relationships with others, including women. Next, what are the fascinating ways your hormones and body chemistry contribute to building rapport, decreasing aggression and fomenting peace? A lot of this is about negotiating skill, which is POWERFUL. Nevertheless, to completely throw a scientific wrench in the works, listen in as Doug explains what he thinks of Stephen Covey's strategic habit of 'thinking win/win'. Keep calm and carry on to https://mountaintoppodcast.com/ === HELP US SEND THE MESSAGE TO GREAT MEN EVERYWHERE === We'll keep the solid, actionable content coming...all for free. Imagine the results when you can calm an angry person in 90 seconds - or less Anger is a normal emotion and you can manage those angry people in your life Episode 117 (Doug is based in California) In this conversation with Doug Noll, we explore: That angry is simply one part of our emotional personality How to quickly sooth the angry soul Anger is an indication of a boundary violation What is emotional invalidation and how does it harm Mistakes to avoid with facing angry people Why anger is not necessarily bad How to manage your own anger and recognize the triggers Why ranting is not a helpful solution About Doug Noll Doug Noll is a lawyer-turned-peacemaker. In addition to his law degree, he has a Masters Degree in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies. In 2000, he left a successful law practice as a civil trial lawyer to help people resolve conflicts without litigation or conflict. Doug was born nearly blind, partially deaf, and with two clubbed feet. His disabilities were challenging to overcome….and he did He's a second-degree black belt and tai chi master, a certified ski instructor, an airplane and helicopter pilot, a white-water river rafter, and a jazz violinist. Doug teaches people how to de-escalate angry people in 90 seconds or less. His fourth book, an Amazon bestseller, is called De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less. Doug has online video courses and provides workshops and coaching to individuals and organizations desiring to increase their emotional competency. As a listener of Your Intended Message you are entitled to receive a free book, How to Listen Others into Existence. Take advantage of this offer here www.DougNoll.co/intended-message ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Doug Noll: 03:04 Well, it's very interesting. There are at least 12 Different kinds of anger. And we don't have time to go into all the different kinds of anger there are, but there are at least 12 Different kinds of anger. And at its root, of course, Anger is an emotion. And there are many levels and intensities of anger. So you can be frustrated, which is an anger, emotion, you can be annoyed, you can be enraged, you can be irritated, you can be you can have hatred, so many, many different levels. The key to all of these emotions are that when we get triggered into an angry emotion, the emotional centres of our brain take over. And they shut down the thinking part of our brain. And we've all had this experience when we've seen it, you get angry, you can't think what some really interesting brain scanning studies show is that when the listener labels the anger to the angry person, the speaker, the anchor goes away in about 90 seconds. And all I would say is something like this, Hey, George, you are really pissed off, you're angry, you're frustrated, you feel completely disrespected and ignored. You don't feel appreciated. You feel a little bit of anxiety and worry about all of this. And you're sad because you feel betrayed. And the whole thing is just really frustrating to you. If you were really angry by me saying those words in that way to you, your brain would literally calm itself down. What's effectively happening is that because your prefrontal cortex is offline when you're angry, when I tell you what you're feeling, it allows your prefrontal cortex to grab a hold and figure things out and all of a sudden calm itself down. And it's how every human brain is hardwired. And it happens in less 90 seconds. It's how it works, 05:04 Doug, if if we did nothing else in this conversation today that that phrase that you just did, you just delivered there is enough to provide tremendous value. Because what I'm noticing is one when you said that you were not responding, anger to anger, which is the typical response, well, you're angry, I'll be even angrier. Yes, I can be a bigger jerk than you no problem. That's the typical response. And then we wonder why he was so unproductive. And we both go away feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. But when you said that, and even though I mimicked anger before, I wasn't angry, but I could imagine if you were saying that to me, and I was angry, it's like, oh, you get me? You understand me? 05:50 Exactly. That's exactly right. And here's what's happening. angry people need to be listened to, they're angry because they're not being heard at a deep emotional level. And when you can fulfil that need by validating their emotional experience, when I call listening another person into existence, anger goes away instantly. And it happens every single time without failure. And I have had 12 years of field experience teaching murderers and maximum security prisons, how to become peacemakers and mediators to stop prison violence. And I've taught over 20,000 inmates these skills, and every single one of them has had success with it in many cases. We started in 2010, my colleague Wolkoff and I started in 2010, in the largest, most violent women's prison in the world. Valley State Prison for Women and Chowchilla, California. Two years into the program, we trained 800 women out of a population of 3600. We got an unsolicited letter from the warden saying the prisoner quieted down because of prisoner peace. It works. ----- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by improving your communication skills. Doug Noll claims he can calm an angry person in 90 seconds or less. Growing up in an affluent Southern California community, he was born with many disabilities: partially deaf and almost blind, he couldn't walk until he was three years old. Although he had a loving family, the community and society at large didn't fully understand how to interact or connect with a disabled child. Noll cites learning to overcome his physical disabilities and emotional turmoil as his introduction to reinvention. Watching his father go through bankruptcy and rebuild himself as a stockbroker gave him a second window into reinvention. Eventually, Noll went on to become a trial lawyer for over 20 years, learning martial arts, tai chi, and energy healing work in his free time. By his mid-40s he had chosen to go back to school for a master's in peacemaking and conflict studies. Walking away from a ten million dollar law practice, Noll chose to become a mediator. Working in prisons, courtrooms, and beyond, he developed a simple technique for calming anger in less than a minute and a half. “Once you start doing this, you start to change yourself,” Noll observes. Listen in on his conversation with CoveyClub founder Lesley Jane Seymour to learn how you can adopt this simple technique and bring more peace, compassion, and authenticity into your life. FREE GIFT! Don't start your reinvention without downloading CoveyClub's starter guide called “31 Badass Tips for Launching Your Reinvention Without Fear!” Bio: Doug Noll speaks about and teaches people how to solve difficult, intractable, and highly emotional problems. He was a business and commercial trial lawyer for 22 years before turning to leadership development, problem-solving, and peacemaking. He is a Senior Consultant with Mobius Executive Leadership and maintains a high-level mediation and arbitration practice. It seems that conflict is all around us these days, from political discord to conflict on the job, to fights with partners. The interesting thing is if asked, most people would say the one thing we want more than anything else is peace. However, if that's the case, then why does it seem that so many of us are having trouble controlling tempers, comprising, and finding the peace they say they want. Some research would say it's because we have not been taught the power of using emotional intelligence to harness peace. Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. The ability to express and control emotions is essential, but so is the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. I've brought in Doug Noll to help us dissect this topic. He's a lawyer, speaker, and author, Doug has spent much of his life examining human conflict. His latest book, De-Escalate, helps people resolve deep interpersonal and ideological conflicts. This is a must-listen-to interview. He truly shares nuggets of wisdom.GuestDoug Noll is an award-winning lawyer, mediator, author, teacher, speaker, and trainer who has mediated thousands of conflicts. After serving as a civil trial lawyer for 22 years, Doug is passionate about understanding human conflict. His groundbreaking work in de-escalating anger in potentially violent confrontations has transformed lives everywhere, including in maximum-security prisons. Doug's fourth book, De-Escalate, is now available in four languages. Key Takeaways1. All conflict can be resolved in 90 seconds or less2. We must address the emotions before we address the problem 3. Ignore the words and read the emotion Research on the TopicEmotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, reason, understand, and manage emotion (Cherry, 2020). While some argue that we are born with a set level of emotional intelligence, others argue that it is a skill that can be strengthened with knowledge and practice. Much research points to the latter argument, and programs for social and emotional learning have become standard curriculum in many schools. Gaining a greater understanding of emotional intelligence can have many benefits. Strengthening and understanding emotional intelligence helps you to think before you react to situations, maintain a greater sense of self-awareness, and have more empathy than others. To improve your emotional intelligence, it's important to listen, empathize, and reflect the emotions of those around you as well as yourself. Overall, working to improve your emotional intelligence is beneficial in many, if not all, aspects of life.
