The USMNT's Gold Cup roster is here, and it's stirring plenty of debate. Notable absences include stars Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, and Jedi Robinson. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed Pulisic will rest, while Musah withdrew for personal reasons. Josh Sargent? Simply left out due to tactical preference. The spotlight this summer turns to fresh faces, with five players—Alex Freeman, Damion Downs, Sebastian Berhalter, Quinn Sullivan, and Matt Freese—set to make their senior debuts. While familiar names like Tyler Adams and Folarin Balogun anchor the team, breakout potential lies in players like Diego Luna, Brian White, and Sebastian Berhalter, who could become national team regulars with strong showings. The big question: does this roster still scream “Gold Cup Title or Bust”? Off the field, the timing matters. This summer was supposed to build momentum—think trophy lifts and confetti—heading into the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup on home soil. Instead, we're left wondering who will lead this group. Tim Ream? Tyler Adams? With upcoming games vs. Türkiye and Switzerland before the group stage kicks off, it's time for new heroes to emerge. Instant Reaction: No Pulisic, Musah, Robinson (4:02) Players that will step up (21:37) Back to front roster breakdown (24:46) Alexi's projected starting XI (40:30) Stu joined 25 Words or Less gameshow (50:18) Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Reports yesterday from FOX and the Athletic indicate that Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah might not participate in the Concacaf Gold Cup this summer for the USMNT. Both are coming off long European seasons with Milan, but it's a huge blow for Mauricio Pochettino and the national team. This summer is the last opportunity to have an extended window to work with players ahead of next summer's World Cup. With Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah already missing due to the Club World Cup, Pochettino's job gets that much more difficult to look ahead to 2026. It does create some opportunities for players to impress and play their way into deeper consideration for key roles in the World Cup though. Perhaps Diego Luna SZN is upon us?Tottenham Hotspur won an uninspiring Europa League final 1-0 over Manchester United. I think my prediction of it having the feel of a relegation playoff came true, Spurs were defensive and very un-Ange like in the win but it got the job done. They are in the Champions League next year while Manchester United does have the feel of a relegated club at the moment. 16th in the Premier League, out of Europe in 2025-26, losing out on somewhere between $100-150M because of that, and while they say they don't have to sell players to add in the summer window, that doesn't really seem possible for a club that has lost more than double the allowed amount in the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability Rules. I'm not sure if Manchester United can be what we've known them to be any time soon due to their financial situation. 4 comebacks highlighted Lamar Hunt US Open Cup play last night as Minnesota, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Austin advanced while DC United and Red Bulls needed penalty shootouts to join them. The inauguaral Concacaf W Champions Cup final will see Tigres host Gotham on Saturday. The hosts won 2-0 over Portland in their semifinal last night while Gotham won 3-1 over Club America. In Club World Cup updates:Endrick will miss the tournament for Real Madrid due to a hamstring injuryJesus Vallejo will not see his contract extended with Madrid for the tournament, he's out of contract this summer. Johnny Cardoso is Atleti's top target as a defensive midfielder, although it's unclear if they could get it done ahead of the tournament. Spurs have a priority transfer option on the USMNT midfielder. Dome Torrent, former Pep Guardiola assistant and last at Atletico San Luis in Liga MX, is the new manager of Monterrey ahead of the tournament. Boca Juniors have settled on Gustavo Quinteros as their top candidate to become their new manager, but Sevilla are also interested in the current Velez coach. Wydad are looking for a new manager as they have parted "mutually" with Rhulani Mokwena. They finished third in the Moroccan league this season, missing out on the Champions League, and they are facing a transfer ban amidst reports of Mokwena working for several months without being paid. Miguel Cardoso is leading Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa into the Champions League final this weekend with Egypt's Pyramids FC. It will be over two legs. Then he will turn his attention towards the Club World Cup where he wants to "showcase our full potential." New ticket options available for the matches in Atlanta, check out FIFA.com/tickets.More Morning Espresso to be served up tomorrow morning.
Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Tony Meola welcome MLS Next Technical Director Luis Robles to the show to unpack the newly-unveiled Quality of Play rankings. As the architect behind the pilot program, Luis breaks down the thinking, methodology, and long-term vision driving this bold shift in how youth player development is assessed in America. Coming on the heels of Tab Ramos' pointed criticism—calling the initiative “cookies for nice passes”—Luis addresses the skepticism head-on. How exactly is “quality” being defined? Can this model produce better professionals—or just more robotic players? And what role does US Soccer play in shaping the future of American talent? Plus, is AC Milan the right club for Yunus Musah? The guys discuss Musah's downturn in form and weigh up the risks of leaving the Italian giants ahead of the World Cup. Jimmy Conrad and Charlie Davies debate where he fits in a midfield already stacked with talent (06:47). Josh Sargent marked his first start since October with a brace, but can the Norwich City striker leapfrog Folarin Balogun in the USMNT pecking order (30:45)? Meanwhile, Ricardo Pepi continues to dominate in the Eredivisie—but is the Championship a stronger proving ground (34:46)? And as "Matchday Mayhem" takes over the UEFA Champions League, the crew break down the key permutations for teams with American players hoping to march on in Europe's premier club competition (46:40).
