In this episode, we follow up to the mention of Sandy's concerning bloodwork in the last episode. Sandy was in the hospital for a week receiving blood transfusions and plasma plasmapherisis treatments before receiving her diagnosis of a rare blood cancer, Waldenström macroglobulinemia. Although it is not curable, it is treatable and the first chemo treatment began this morning. We talk about how we are explaining this to Bryce for processing as well as our emotions during the past two weeks. In this episode, Danielle Schaeffer shares her journey as a parent of a disabled son, how that journey changed her perspective on the world they inhabit together and how her advocacy for the disability community led her to serve in the local church. Danielle also helps educate listeners on proper language surrounding disability as well as how the church can & should lead the way in creating welcoming spaces for all God's people. Danielle currently serves as the Director of Disability Ministry at Christ Church, a non-denominational church in the suburbs of Chicago, and is pursuing her Masters of Divinity degree from Fuller Seminary.

In this episode, we talk about Bryce's recent sleepover with his best friend, Michael, and how we helped him work through his hurt feelings and emotions.  It's not easy to watch your son struggle with his feelings of hurt and sadness. It's also not easy to figure out the right words and instructions to help teach your son who thinks in a completely different way that yourself. We are very grateful that the Lord continues to give us wisdom as we pray for it daily! We also talk about how we may feel isolated at times because we don't have others to help care for Bryce - However, we each need to relook at our situation and make sure that we are making the effort to help others understand our children and learn to TRUST! We know from experience that it's not easy and takes time. The Minister for Disability Issues Louise Upston wants to strip Whaikaha or the Disability Ministry, of its role in delivering support services, and instead shift it to the Minstry of Social Development, but the backlash has been swift and scathing. Some disability advocates said the community wasn't consulted and said the ministry played an important role in giving them control over decisions that affect their lives, Director of Advocacy for IHC Tania Thomas speaks to Lisa Owen.

Labour's Disability spokesperson says funding was laid out for the Ministry of Disabled People until 2027.   It's under review after abruptly announcing funding changes that ultimately resulted in Minister Penny Simmonds' demotion.   A briefing is now suggesting multiple problems, dating back to its formation under the previous government.  Priyanca Radhakrishnan told Mike Hosking that it had been looking at fixing the issues it inherited from the Ministry of Health.  She says in the interim, Penny Simmonds should have ensured it had the funding to meet cost pressures while working on systemic issues.  LISTEN ABOVE   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cami Lundt didn't expect any surprises with her fourth pregnancy… until the doctor broke the shocking news. Ableism―not a lack of ramps, finances, or accessible worship―is the biggest obstacle for disabled ministry in America.  In From Inclusion to Justice: Disability, Ministry, and Congregational Leadership (Baylor UP, 2022), Erin Raffety argues that what our churches need is not more programs for disabled people but rather the pastoral tools to repent of able-bodied theologies and practices, listen to people with disabilities, lament ableism and injustice, and be transformed by God's ministry through disabled leadership. Without a paradigm shift from ministries of inclusion to ministries of justice, our practical theology falls short. Drawing on ethnographic research with congregations and families, pastoral experience with disabled people, teaching in theological education, and parenting a disabled child, Raffety, an able-bodied Christian writing to able-bodied churches, confesses her struggle to repent from ableism in hopes of convincing others to do the same. At the same time, Raffety draws on her interactions with disabled Christian leaders to testify to what God is still doing in the pews and the pulpit, uplifting and amplifying the ministry and leadership of people with disabilities as a vision toward justice in the kingdom of God.
