Show Notes: Jacinda Townsend shares her journey of living in 10 different states and two foreign countries, having four careers, including being an elected official, having a couple of kids, and doing various weird things. Working in Law, Journalism, and Fiction When Jacinda graduated at 20, she went to law school, which was part of a straight trajectory she had imagined since childhood, and while she initially believed she would go into politics and return to Kentucky, she realized she did not want to pursue a career in law. After finishing her degree, she worked as a news commentator for the Christian Science Monitor network, which led to her being hired as a professional journalist to cover international and national politics. Jacinda was passionate about the news and TV news. Writing for the sound byte was a challenge for her, but she loved it because it allowed her to express herself politically and learn a lot about the English language. She decided she wanted to pursue writing seriously and is now a novelist. She also teaches at Brown University in the MFA program. Throughout her career, Jacinda explains, it has been random events and circumstances that led her to each position. Motivated by Anger and Moving into Politics Jacinda talks about her career in politics and how it transpired fueled by her anger at issues she could not ignore. She shares her experiences as a sitting school board member in Bloomington, Indiana. She served in a progressive town with a lot of socio-economic segregation and disciplinary disparities by race and ethnicity which she could not ignore. Jacinda ran for re-election and was elected again, and this time, it was a landslide. She moved to Michigan and was asked to run for the school board there. Jacinda talks about the issues tackled, changes made, and how integration has changed. Jacinda believes that the ideal of integration is not happening. She explains that segregation has increased with 80 percent of white kids going to a school where the percentage of white children is above 75 percent, and minority children and still 90 percent more likely to be in a minority school. She mentions that peak integration happened in 1987 and goes on to explain the driving factors behind the segregation. Working as a Writer The conversation turns to her writing career, which includes the award-winning novel Mother Country and the forthcoming novel Trigger Warning. Jacinda talks about her routine, which includes a 500-word word count daily. She also shares a story of working with a student who felt unsure about her writing, and how she copes with the uncertainty of working in the arts. She also shares her approach to keeping up with her characters, and uses random texts to remember what was going through the character's head and keeps up with them. This helps her keep up with the story and remember the characters' reactions to things. When writing a novel, Jacinda immerses herself in the character's world, trying to experience it through their eyes. She doesn't take breaks during the writing process, as she believes that the imagination begets the imagination, and when living with her characters every day, it becomes like a muscle memory. When she returns to the story, she can remember every bit of why she did something, making her work more enjoyable and fulfilling. Living in Foreign Countries Jacinda was a Fulbright student in Cote d'Ivoire, and she has lived in two foreign countries, including Mali and Morocco. While in Mali, she encountered modern-day slavery. She also went to Morocco and visited Mauritania, where 20% of the population is enslaved. She explains that Mauritania is a remote country where it is like stepping back 500 years. It is difficult to escape slavery, as employment is caste-based, so if they escape slavery, there is no work. She met an escaped slave and her family, who gave birth to her last of eight children while escaping slavery. Jacinda shares that holding this baby was a profound moment in her life, and it was this experience that led to her novel, Mother Country. Jacinda explains that the reason no-one knows about the slavery issues in Mauritania is because it is not often mentioned in the news. The media is state-run, and the slavery system is brutally enforced. It is also difficult to get to due to its remoteness so there are very few Western visitors. People there often believe they should be slaves, that it is divinely ordained. Influential Classes and Professors at Harvard Jacinda mentions Martin Kilson, a brilliant political scholar. She was initially shy in his class, but after her campus activism went viral, he hugged her and said, "You're brilliant." This was a moment that made her feel like she belonged there for the first time. Jacinda appreciates the gift of Martin Kilson's support and tries to make her students feel seen when they are quiet and nervous. She believes that making people feel heard is important and that she will never forget the gift of his presence. Jacinda Townsend shares her campus activism story. At the time she had no idea of the impact this would have. One night, the Boston Police came to her room. She was alone, but before she knew it, seven girls showed up who had come to support her. This experience taught her to speak on television and that even in difficult times, it's important to be there for others, and that others will be there for you, if you share a common belief. WITCH, PLEASE! Get ready for a bumper episode of the podcast! So make yourself comfortable on your broom, as we are joined in the Reign studio by one of my favourite guests ever and one of the greatest performers of all time, Cynthia Erivo. In case you've been M.I.A. in OZ visiting the Wizard or something and missed it, Cynthia stars as Elphaba in the movie adaptation of the mega musical hit, ‘Wicked', alongside Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, and Jonathan Bailey, who aptly plays Prince Charming himself, Fiyero. This isn't Cynthia's first dalliance with musicals. After starting out on the West End Cynthia went on to win a Tony, Emmy and Grammy award for her performance in ‘The Colour Purple' and was nominated twice at the Oscars for her performance in ‘Harriet' playing the racial freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman, and for the original song ‘Stand Up'. There is a reason Cynthia is only an O away from being an EGOT, but she's not just an incredible performer, she is an incredible conversationalist, too. We cover SO much in this episode! We talk about Cynthia's ‘Wicked' journey - from auditioning to singing ‘Defying Gravity' for the first time on set, the life lessons she's learnt from Oprah and Ariana Grande, feeling like an outsider, how she *almost* became a spinal surgeon, and how her next role in life might take her off to Havard to study. Is there ANYTHING Cynthia can't do? I loved sharing this incredible conversation with Cynthia, but it's the bits about embracing queer identity and the power of dreaming big that really made me tear up. I hope this episode inspires you to defy gravity and dream big, and if you love it please get in touch, as I would love to talk to you about all the themes and just how incredible ‘Wicked' is, too. You can find me across socials @joshsmithhhosts and don't forget to come back next week for another great chat! Love Josh xxx P.S. In this episode you will have heard me chatting about my book book ‘Great Chat: Seven Lessons for Better Conversation, Deeper Connections and Improved Wellbeing' which is out now and you can get your hardback/ digital or audio book here: https://geni.us/GreatChat Whether you are already confident at chatting or are socially anxious this book really is for everyone and I hope it inspires you to turn even everyday conversation into a self development practice for your wellbeing and the good of those around you, too. The Conscious Edge Podcast: Redefining Wealth as a Whole Human Experience
Unlocking Your Potential: Understanding and Overcoming Self-Sabotage Welcome back to another solo episode! Last week, I discussed four unhealthy goal habits many of us encounter. Today, I want to dive deeper into the underlying behaviors and feelings driving these habits, and more importantly, how we can address them. My journey into understanding these behaviors started while I was training people to invest in real estate. I noticed most people couldn't achieve long-term success. That's when I realized that people were getting in their own way. It became clear that something deeper was at play. Then, I stumbled upon an article about why we struggle to change. It highlighted how we often engage in behaviors that work against our goals and explained that self-sabotaging behavior was driven by underlying fears and feelings. This led me to the methodology I now use at The Conscious Edge and in my program, The Exponential Entrepreneur. The highly-researched and psychology-based process is called Immunity to ChangeTM, developed by 2 Havard professors, Robert Keegan and Lisa Lahey. Their research shows that our psychological immune system, designed to protect us, can actually hinder our progress by holding onto limiting beliefs formed from past experiences. For example, you might avoid making offers in your business because you fear being seen as a sleazy salesperson. These fears are rooted in what Keegan and Lahey call “big assumptions.” These are deep-seated beliefs about the world and our place in it, often formed in childhood and carried into adulthood. The Immunity to ChangeTM methodology helps us uncover these big assumptions and question their validity. We can then start to rewire our brains, challenging these beliefs and adopting new ones that align with our goals. This isn't about using sheer willpower or forcing ourselves to “do it scared.” This approach allows us to pursue our goals from a place of curiosity and growth, rather than constant stress and fear. One of my favorite parts of this process is the testing phase, where we explore the validity of our big assumptions through small, safe behavior changes. This not only helps us achieve our goals but also transforms our overall approach to challenges, making us more resilient and adaptive. If you're interested in exploring your own assumptions that may be stopping your progress, the first step is the free Immunity to ChangeTM mapping workshop. This will help you map out your goals, identify counterproductive behaviors, and uncover the fears driving them. It's a process that can change how you approach your goals and your life. If you'd like my help and support as you do this work, consider applying for The Exponential Entrepreneur program. We're a supportive community dedicated to helping each other rewire our brains and achieve our goals in a holistic, sustainable way. Today I sit down with Alexandre Havard, author and international speaker, to discuss the relationship between the four temperaments and virtue. We discuss what we can learn from the story of Jerome Lejeune, each temperament's virtues and vices, why the temperaments are important to learn, the temperaments of different saints, how to use knowledge of your temperament to develop virtue, how your character represents who you are moreso than your temperament, and much more.Check out Alexandre's work here: https://alexhavard.com/Join our Locals community: https://lilarose.locals.com/ Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LilaRose865 Seven Weeks Coffee: https://www.sevenweekscoffee.com Buy your pro-life coffee with a 10% discount using the code LILA!
*** Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/HistoireEtCivilisationsMag Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/histoireetcivilisations/ Twitter : https://twitter.com/Storiavoce

The importance of being intentional and building self-control is emphasized, as well as the idea that discipline translates into multiple domains. The impact of digital use on dopamine and motivation is explored, and the difference between digital minimalism and digital discipline is discussed. - Sponsors: AMARE GLOBAL: The Mental Wellness Company - get $10 off your next order - https://www.amare.com/155249/en-us/ (use code: EVERYBODY) Get 10% discount on all For Everybody products at https://shopforeverybody.com/ (use code: SFE10) Get 10% off Jocko Fuel at https://store.jockofuel.com/ (use code EVERYBODY) - Extra Stuff: Havard's Website - https://www.havardmela.com/ Follow Havard on X - https://twitter.com/havard_mela - Subscribe to my newsletter: https://aaronmachbitz.com/ - Something For Everybody Merchandise → https://shopforeverybody.com/collections/somethingforeverybody - To support me on Patreon (thank you): https://www.patreon.com/AaronMachbitz (Recorded on March 14th, 2024) Edited by Ben Rogerson (@BenRogerson_) Intro music by Residual Audio (Residualaudio.com) - Episodes You Might Enjoy: #243 - The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health Information - Dr. Jessica Rabon https://everybodyspod.com/jessrabon/ #239 - BUILDING ANTIFRAGILE CONFIDENCE: https://everybodyspod.com/antifragile/ - Get in touch: iG: https://www.instagram.com/AaronMachbitz Twitter: https://twitter.com/AaronMachbitz Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AMachbitz/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AaronMachbitz Email: https://www.aaronmachbitz.com/contact/

In this episode, we pass judgment on the usual categories: Best Bloodshed, Nicknames, Notable Witticisms, Outlawry, and Thingmen. This saga proved to be more interesting in some categories than in others, but does Havard's Saga have what it takes to earn a good score from John and Andy in Final Ratings? Listen and find out. While Havard and his band of merry cousins and bloodthirsty tweens hides out at Atli's, his good friend Steinthor is heading to the Althing to work his magic on a settlement for all the killings. But there's one more brother of the sons of Thjodrek out there. His name is Thorarin and he's a chieftain of some consequence. He's hatched a plot that could earn him a healthy settlement and a bloody revenge that depends on Atli being the kind of cowardly pushover his reputation suggests. Does Havard have what it takes to defend himself against these powerful men or will he fall victim to their cunning plan? What do you do after a successful killing spree? Kill some more! At least that seems to be Havard of Isafjord's motto. There's a certain logic to it as one killing begets another. But Thorbjorn has a lot of brothers and there's only so much killing Havard can do before he needs to find a sweet spot to hide out. Perhaps that nice fella from the Althing who offered his help will provide the protection Havard needs? This episode moves quick. We meet some new characters, see some familiar faces, and get a shocking surprise involving two young boys who stand up to a local bully. We also spend some time talking Old Norse poetry. All in all, a good time. One more episode of Havard's saga to go before we take it to the Saga Thing! Even at Lewis' graveside, Havard was a faithful friend, and a friend full of faith in Christ, confessing his hope in the resurrection.
We're back with another installment of Hávarðar saga Ísfirðings, The Saga of Havard of Isafjord. This one is quickly becoming a new Saga Thing favorite. In this episode, Havard lays around, Bjargey gets busy, Thorbjorn takes a nasty fall, and Vak meets one of the more surprisingly stupid but realistic demises we've seen on this podcast. Along the way, Havard cracks the door open to let a new God into his heart, but only if said new God can provide him with the bloody revenge he's been praying for. We also dig into the runesack and discuss the wonders of whale rib rollers and what exactly Thorbjorn is doing with Sigrid and the other young women he takes into his household. Saga Thing returns with a brand-new episode for a brand new saga from late medieval Iceland. In this episode, we dip our toes into the first five chapters of Hávarðar saga Ísfirðings, The Saga of Havard of Isafjord. It's a story of good guys vs. bad guys in this surprisingly fun but little-known classic. The heroes of this episode are Olaf and his parents, Havard and Bjargey. The villains are Thorbjorn and his despicable nephew Vak. Needless to say, things don't go very well for Olaf and his family when they come up against Thorbjorn's ruthless brand of authoritarianism. We'd also like to welcome our new guest illustrator, William Bilson. In his first illustration for Havard's Saga, we see Thorbjorn gently guiding the local lawspeaker to the right decision when he's asked to settle a dispute over a whale carcass.
