Send us a textBridget stops by the podcast to discuss music, metaphysics, and much more. ****Bridget Barkan is a chameleon artist who shape-shifts through genre and style with a thread of raw truth and soul, woven into every melody and lyric. A native New Yorker, she has toured the world with pop/glam band Scissor Sisters and has performed with Bright Light Bright Light and Slow Knights. Starring in LGBTQ romantic classic “Walk with Me,” as a singer/songwriter, featured on the original album as well. As a singer, she has also opened for Lady Gaga, and has shared the stage with Drag legends Joey Arias, Murray Hill, and more. She worked closely with Baz Luhrmann as the voice of Misty Holloway on the Netflix show “The Get Down.” Bridget has released singles with the House DJ/producer legend Todd Terry as well as numerous of her own singles. As a child actress, she has appeared in countless commercials and Sesame Street. She has starred in HBO's Everyday People, Sherrybaby, Redacted, God's Pocket, Steven Soderbergh's The Knick and had a recurring role as a one-legged “hooker” on Law & Order: SVU. On stage, Barkan has appeared in numerous productions including Dog Sees God and alongside Lea Michelle in a workshop of Spring Awakening. "Heartbroken Ones” was a practice in healing, purging, and processing what Barkan was going through. “It helped me get through one of the worst moments of my life. It was the acceptance I was singing to myself,” Barkan explains. “All that mattered was releasing the pain that this indiscretion had caused.” Working with producer Austin Bello (Nikki Pope, FNKHOUSER, Goldvein) again who worked on her previous single “Good Things” and singer songwriter Poet Hawkins, she crafted the song in “a more old soul approach at first. But then I kept listening to my friend Natti Vogel's song ‘FAB (Free Ass Bitch),' which also was a healing song, which had a more pop and synth based energy, so we went in that direction, instead. We took parts of a voice memo and created a soundscape which really captured the inner world I was in.” A regular in the NYC artsy pop underground that includes Bright Light Bright Light, Xavier Smith, and John Cameron Mitchell among many others, Bridget is a “Jill of All Trades” on a one woman journey through life, love and loss. She also formerly toured the world with Scissor Sisters and can be seen in their earth-shattering “Let's Have A Kiki” video as one of Ana Matronic's crew. Having inherited her father's knack for songwriting, Bridget's intrinsic artistry and talent is a legacy she proudly carries. *****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomAudio production by Rich Zei of Third Ear AudioIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Hey, everybody. I took a little break from producing the latest episode to enjoy a little theatre. I attended opening night of a production of Bert V. Royal's play "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead", a reimagining of the Peanuts kids as teenagers dealing with some heavy issues. Homophobia, suicide, sex, drugs, death and life. Good grief there's a lot of stuff. Anyway, here's a bonus episode with my thoughts. (If you want to hear me talk more about the play and Bert Royal, as well as my chat with the director of a different production of the play, check out episode 55.

We may still be in the time of Covid, but episode 55 of the podcast is going to the theatre...virtually. We're exploring Bert V. Royal's 2004 play "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead". It's a self-described "Peanuts parody" imagining the Peanuts gang as teens dealing with LGBTQ issues, substance abuse, violence and issues of identity and place in the world. To give us some perspective on why we need this play and why we need it right now, we chat with Muscatine (Iowa) Community College theatre director Alyssa Oltmanns, whose controversial production of "Dog Sees God" premieres virtually on November 20 and 21, 2020. Proceeds of the play go to support Clock Inc. of the Quad Cities. Thanks to Kevin McLeod at Incompetech.com for creative commons use of his songs "Mining by Moonlight" and "Bass Walker". Shelly hangs with (part of) the 2010 cast of Dog Sees God in our first script reading! So fun. Imagine if the Peanuts characters are real teenagers with real problems. It is dark and funny. We spontaneously made up some mantras. We sang badly together. We threw another random C-List celeb under the bus for no reason. It was lovely.
Rachel Ford and Jim Yeager are the latest guests on “Meet the Artist,” the podcast from Register Star newsroom where we meet the artists who make our community a more beautiful place. Ford and Yeager appear in the upcoming play “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.” The play is about a boy struggling through teenage angst and questioning the existence of an afterlife following the death of his dog. It opens at The Nordlof Center on September 13. Ford is a graduate of North Park University where she earned a degree in creative writing in theater and performance studies. She has several local stage and ensemble credits to her name. On the podcast, she discusses a number of topics together, like how thinking of death makes us appreciate life, and she talks about her little dog, too. Yeager is a teacher of mass communications at Highland Community College. And although he helps students with their film productions, he hasn’t performed on stage in over 20 years. Mike rationalizes this episode as something to nicely prepare him for the headache that’ll be taping at Anime North. The episode takes many different tangents as there is no real topic this week. Mike does remember talking quite a bit about the mini convention that passed last weekend in Toronto, the end of yet another Anime magazine and the coverage of it, and something about one of Adam’s favourite hentai game titles getting an official english release (nicely in line with it being episode 69). Also some thoughts on the play “Dog Sees God” which was mentioned last episode, a quick overview of the MacBook now recording this show, and the results of the contest with answers and the winner. Of course not necessarily in that order. Mike Nicolas, James Austin, Adam Grant, Brent Chittenden
Mike decides to take a week off from taping, and returns after dragging James and Adam to see Dog Sees God, and spends the entire first segment reviewing it and talking about fan fiction in the process. Then we tape the bullets twice because of technical difficulties with Mike’s MacBook, where we talk about Taro Aso’s economic stimulus plan for Japan (built on straw pillars), threats to mangaka, manga re-releases, and perhaps some High School Panic. Also some further Apple thoughts, and an Easter Carol Mike said he had been searching for. Mike Nicolas, James Austin, Adam Grant
In this episode, hosts Katherine Cody, Psy.D. and Becca Lory, CAS, BCCS take a look at the new award-winning movie Keep the Change (Tribeca Film Festival 2017 - Best Picture, Best Actress Nomination; Rutgers New Jersey Jewish Film Festival, Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, Boston Jewish and ReelAbilities Film Festival). Samantha Elisofon co-stars in Keep the Change, and also recently appeared in the film Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson (Karlovy Vary, Cannes Film Festival). She sings regularly in cabarets, loves to work with young children, and graduated cum laude from Pace University in 2014. Rachel discusses the genesis of the film, and why she decided to use actors with autism in the film, and Samantha discusses her own diagnosis on the spectrum, as well as how she differs from the character she plays. Becca and Kate also discuss their connections to the film, and feelings about how it represents the autism community. Keep the Change begins opening in theaters March 16th! Who he likes working with the most when he develops a new work (it’s not who you think). Why he reads reviews but doesn’t read chat boards.
