Tom Denford joins Itir to discuss the challenges and opportunities marketers face in working with media agencies, focusing on transparency, trust, and long-term strategy. They cover the complexities of the buyer-seller roles within agencies, the shift toward in-house media capabilities, and practical advice for smaller brands looking to work with the right agency. A key takeaway is the importance of not cutting corners on media investments, as the cheapest option often comes at the expense of quality and effectiveness. Whether you're starting out or refining your approach, this conversation offers valuable insights for building strong media partnerships, understanding the importance of media quality in advertising, and how to unlock growth with the right media investments. Tom is a leading advisor with over 20 years of experience in media and advertising, known for his strategic insights and thought leadership. Before co-founding ID Comms in 2009 with David Indo, he gained experience in media agencies and client-side marketing. ID Comms, which helps major brands like Walmart, T-Mobile, and Meta navigate digital transformation and optimize media investments, is recognized as the #1 Media Advisor by the World Federation of Advertisers and the #1 Best Place to Work in Marketing and Advertising. Vinnie Potestivo is an Emmy® Award-winning Media Advisor who helps clients leverage their media exposure, find fame, and make impact. Originally, this episode was slated for my Truth Tastes Funny podcast, and indeed Vinnie and I talk plenty about the rollercoaster of life on Earth; but our conversation leaned so much toward media and the business of celebrity today that I moved it over to YES, BRAND. Furthermore, it was Vinnie who suggested I use the phrase "YES, BRAND Method" when referring to how I work with clients...and this seemed like the right homage to his way with branding!
Vinnie Potestivo started off in the casting department at MTV in New York City, and he went on to be a talent executive at the network working with the biggest names in music to develop their personal brands through original content. I am talking about Mandy Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Simpson, TJ Lavin, and Lauren Conrad, just to name a few. Vinnie is now an Emmy Award-winning media brand advisor and personal brand strategist running his own company Vinnie Potestivo Entertainment and hosting the I Have A Podcast podcast. Host Shannon Russell and Vinnie began their careers in television production together at this iconic network in Times Square, and they share stories from back in the day and how the media industry has evolved over the past few decades. Shannon and Vinnie discuss how friendships in show business really do exist, and it's because of these relationships that careers are launched, entertainment is created, and brands are built to create unimaginable success. In an environment defined by physical strength and hyper-masculinity, Miri Eisin deployed a leadership style which pushed gender boundaries and expectations. Often the only woman in the male dominated IDF upper ranks, Miri constantly considered when and how to integrate her femininity into the job. From whether or not to wear make up, to the tone of her voice, every decision she made was intentional.Miri's impressive climb to the top, like most ascensions, was not without struggle and Gil discovers how she combated those obstacles to rise to such positions as the Prime Minister- appointed position of foreign media advisor. Miri ultimately learned that being a woman in her field was both an advantage, and an identity which made her inherently vulnerable — wisdom she now imparts to her daughters and women who have come up after her in the military and the workforce.More about storymarkstorymark is brought to you by itrek studios. itrek is a non-profit that inspires tomorrow's leaders through peer-led, week-long treks in Israel to experience its innovation, diversity and complex reality firsthand. Last month, our podcast to mark National Science Week in Australia took a look at how scientists can make themselves heard by policymakers. This week, we’re turning the tables. We hear from two senior figures in Australia's policy-making process about what it’s like to be at the pointy end of policy creation and formulation, and receiving input – wanted and unwanted – from scientists. Hosts Bob Cotton and Sue Regan chat to Ian Chubb, former Chief Scientist of Australia, and Taimus Werner-Gibbings, Chief of Staff to Tasmanian Senator Lisa Singh. They discuss how to get evidence and data on the desk of a politician, the future of science in policymaking, and Ian’s personal story of putting his life in the hands of an experimental cancer treatment. Listen here: Ian Chubb has had a long and distinguished career as a neuroscientist and an academic. He has served as Vice-Chancellor of both Flinders University and the Australian National University, and has been made a Companion of the Order of Australia. He served as Australia’s Chief Scientist from 2011 to 2016, and was conspicuous in raising the public profile of science in the media. Taimus Werner-Gibbings has worked for over a decade in the public service. He has been a Senior Policy Officer in the Department of the Environment, and a parliamentary staffer for both ministers and backbenchers, in government and in opposition. Taimus is currently Chief of Staff & Media Advisor to Lisa Singh, Senator for Tasmania. What does color of skin have to do with equal access to justice in America? The Equal Protection Clause, part of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution which took effect in 1868, provides that no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction "the equal protection of the laws." In 2017 America, does every person have equal protection under the law, or not? Over the past month, Life of the Law presented Sarah Marshall's two part report on the life and execution of Warren McCleskey. Unequal Protection Part 1 Unequal Protection Part 2 Warren McCleskey was a black man living in Georgia. He was convicted and sentenced to death for his role in the robbery of a furniture store and the murder of a white police officer. He appealed his death sentence all the way to the US Supreme Court in the case, McCleskey v Kemp on the grounds that he was sentenced to die because he was black. McCleskey's attorneys presented evidence known as the Baldus Study -- evidence, statistics, data -- to prove that blacks disproportionately received death sentences when the murder victims were white, that the color of skin and racial prejudice directly affected his death sentence, and many other death sentences in Georgia. Four of the Court’s justices accepted the evidence that Warren’s right to equal protection under the law as guaranteed by the US Constitution had been violated. But 5 of the justices rejected Warren’s evidence and in 1991, Warren McCleskey was executed. To many legal scholars, the court’s disturbing 5-4 ruling in McCleskey v Kemp was the beginning of the end of equal protection under the law in America. We took Sarah's reports and the Supreme Court's 1987 5-4 ruling on McCleskey V Kemp inside San Quentin State Prison to talk with men charged, convicted and sentenced about race, equal protection, and criminal justice in 2017 America.
