Lauren Weedman (Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Looking) is here for a deep meditation on dating in LA, working with celebrities, and Season 3 Ep 13 of Sex and the City, “Escape From New York.” And as we mounted the bull at Saddle Ranch together, I couldn't help but wonder: Did Garth the dildo model ever publish his poetry? Got a burning question about a relationship or friendship problem (or really anything Sex and the City adjacent)? Just record a voice memo on your phone and email it to AndJustLikeMatt@gmail.com and Matt will answer your question on the show with his very fancy guests.

We're taking Romantic Comedy month to the streets of San Francisco by way of HBO, for “Looking: the Movie”! Not the series but a series epilogue, conclusion and continuation of the quaint and chaotic lives of Patrick, Dom, Augustin, Richie and of course, Lauren Weedman's Best Supporting Doris! We're all ears for Russell Tovey's Kevin and swoon for a pre-White Lotus Murray Bartlett, but consider the show stolen by Justice of the Peace Tyne Daly! It's San Francisco, how hard can it be to meet cool people? Well, if the only people you run into is the cast of the HBO series and movie, Looking, you might have some work to do! This week we tackle the controversial and short-lived HBO series and subsequent moviefilm, Looking, created by writer-director Andrew Haigh. The series followed a group of gay men in San Francisco and their travails in life and love- Patrick (Jonathan Groff), our anxious protagonist with deeeeeeeep mommy issues; Augustin (Frankie J. Alvarez), the tortured "artist" looking for meaning in his work and finding drugs along the way; and Dom (Murray Bartlett), a peri peri chicken lover having a mid-life crisis. Over the course of the series, which only ran for 18 episodes from 2014-2015, we follow this crew and a great cast of supporting actors, including but not limited to Lauren Weedman, Scott Bakula, and sexpot Raul Castillo, as they look for meaning in their lives, with plenty of cringe, Grindr dates, and drunken dancing along the way. The series unfortunately had a short run, but was brought back for one final installment in 2016 with Looking: The Movie. Join Jake and Kevin this week as we talk about the highs of lows of the series and how successful the movie holds up as a final episode. Why did they not cast any gay or queer Asian characters in a show set in San Francisco? Why are the three protagonists so insufferable in the first season? Did Richie and Patrick really get back together in the movie? This and more on this week's episode! PLUS: We dive back to our regularly-scheduled mini-series programming this week! The Criterion Channel (who does not yet sponsor this podcast but we're open to the idea) has a fantastic selection of queer filmmaking, bolstered recently by a collection of queer short films. For the next few episodes, we'll be watching some of these shorts, beginning with the film The Red Tree, directed by Paul Rowley in 2018. This pseudo-documentary short follows a fictional gay man who travels back to the island where Mussolini interred hundreds of gay man in his rise to power in the 1930s.

Looking back at all the people who were part of Almost Live!, it's notable that there are literally none of them that moved onto completely different careers after the show wrapped years ago. None of the cast members went into the clergy - or became an actuary, astronaut, statistician, pipe-fitter, cartographer, or tried their hand at dentistry. Yes, Joe Guppy DID become a psychotherapist for a while, but he also simultaneously taught comedy. The two DO go hand-in-hand after all. But most everyone moved from the show to somewhat related fields: Some on to TV work, writing projects, standup comedy, public speaking, and theater. But one former cast member has pretty much done - and continues to do - ALL of that. And she was already under sail before she ever arrived at Almost Live! Lauren Weedman has a performing career longer that KING KONG's arms. Both of them. She's acted in countless movies and TV shows, from Arrested Development, to Will and Grace, from Two Broke Girls, to Masters of Sex. She played major roles in the HBO series Hung and Looking. But as you'll discover in this episode, her very first TV experience was on Almost Live! Lauren Weedman official sites LaurenWeedman.com Lauren Weedman | IMDb Lauren Weedman | Twitter Lauren Weedman | Instagram After the show ended, she later became a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. She's done a ton of theater, including no less than 11 solo plays she wrote herself. She's also the host of the Moth Storytelling Slam in Santa Monica. She's a noted painter of original art. As for acting, she's performed on stage everywhere in the country. She's also the author of two books, and you can see her more recently in HBO's series Euphoria. Without question one of the most accomplished talents that ever strolled into the studios of Almost Live! Actress, comedian, theater performer, artist, author, playwright, AND the single mom of Leo. They live together in L.A. - at nearby Santa Monica.

Lauren Weedman wants to love food again. The comedic actor, a former The Daily Show Correspondent and current The Moth host, with roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm and HBO's Looking, has a complicated relationship with food. She wants to make eating a more soulful experience, starting with her last meal; a food she never lets herself enjoy. And yes, we used phrases like "complicated relationship with food" and "soulful experience," but rest assured: Lauren is one of the funniest guests to grace Your Last Meal; chortles ahead. Lauren's love of pad Thai takes us to Little Uncle, one of Seattle's best Thai restaurants. Chef/owners Poncharee Kounpungchart and Wiley Frank painstakingly squeeze tamarind pods to make the sauce for their pad Thai and they tell Rachel why they refuse to put chicken in the dish, no matter how nice a customer asks.  Lauren Weedman was raised by a ballerina who was always watching her weight, so Rachel interviewed Kari Brunson, a former professional ballet dancer who retired from dance to explore her love of cooking. Today Kari co-owns Seattle's Juicebox Cafe and one of Rachel's favorite ice cream shops, Frankie & Jo's. Follow Rachel Belle & Your Last Meal on Instagram!

There is something very raw, campy and sexy about the women in prison genre. Those who are fans of classics like Caged and the not-so-subtly titled Girls in Prison you know what I'm talking about. (Nikki, I'm looking at you!)  It was the style of these locked up ladies that inspired actress Jillian Armenante (Fresh Off The Boat, Judging Amy, Girl, Interrupted) when she was creating her new show, Kittens in a Cage.  As she explains in this episode, Kittens was based on a play written by Kelleen Conway Blanchard after reading it on a trip to Seattle. Actress Jillian Armenante In fact, Seattle played the backdrop for a lot of the history between Jillian and her craft. Hearing her tell stories about her theater foundation and how it led to her life in LA makes me feel a little out of my depth. I never fully pursued theater as a career because I was scared to death of failure. And, yet...here I am in Hollywood. I'm a star! Rather, I'm a co-star!! I made it? Any who, I love hearing stories from other actors on why they perform and what keeps them going in the face of a career with constant rejection. It can truly wear on your soul after a while. The best part of all of this is that Jillian and her wife Alice Dodd are moms to two beautiful little girls. I couldn't wait to ask her how she found time to produce a TV show, star in a billion other TV show and films, and still take care of her kids. How did she do it?  After our chat I'm guessing lots of booze... Noted, Jillian. Noted. Plus when I found out she pulled it all together with a Kickstarter campaign, lots of favors from friends, and enough moxie to fill a...moxie holder... I was super inspired! I wanted to know more and find a way to tell my friends to watch. We should all watch and support other actors who get out of their "cage" and try new things. (see what I did there?) Lauren Weedman, Joel McHale and Jillian Armenante Kittens stars Rebecca Mozo, Erin Anderson, Rebecca Field and of course Jillian who also directs and executive produces. The guest star list is ridiculous...Joel McHale, Amy Brenneman, Tyne Daly, Felicia Day and Constantine Maroulis to name a few.  You can find more info on the Kittens website, and watch it on Hulu, Vimeo and Amazon. Felicia Day Keep up with Kittens and Jillian on Twitter and Facebook.  Then come back here and let me know what you thought of the show! I think it's sexy, sassy and swell. We Dropped A Bomb On You: A City and Its Stories: Los Angeles: The Best of Slake I-IV (Rare Bird Books) Cofounded by former LA Weekly editor Joe Donnelly and current Los Angeles Times Arts and Entertainment editorLaurie Ochoa, Slake is a literary journal that sets a new template for the next generation of print publications -- collectible, not disposable; destined for the bedside table instead of the recycling bin. It's a whole new way of looking at Los Angeles and the world. We Dropped a Bomb on You is a devastating compendium of essays, fiction, and photo essays from the first four issues of Slake. Featuring previously unpublished work by Aimee Bender, Mark Z. Danielewski, Dana Goodyear, Jerry Stahl, John Albert, Jonathan Gold, Lauren Weedman and many many more, this collection marks a return to storytelling with polished essay, memoir, fiction, poetry, and profile writing that is disappearing in a world of instant takes and unfiltered opinion. John Albert cofounded the semilegendary cross-dressing band Christian Death and also enjoyed a stint as the drummer in Bad Religion. He lives in Los Angeles and has contributed to LA Weekly, Hustler, and BlackBook, among others. He won the Best of the West Journalism Best Sports Writing Award in 2000, for the LA Weekly article from which Wrecking Crew derived.  Jonathan Gold is a food critic who currently writes for the Los Angeles Times and has previously written for LA Weekly and Gourmet. In 2007 he became the first food critic to win the Pulitzer Prize. He is also a regular on KCRW's Good Food radio program. Lauren Weedman made her television debut on Comedy Central's Emmy Award-winning THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART as a featured Correspondent.  It was at that same time that Lauren was a regular on NPR's national, political satire show, REWIND and appeared in her solo show, HOMECOMING, Off-Broadway at the Westside Theatre. The New York Times said of Lauren and HOMECOMING, “Like Bob Newhart in his early stand-up routines, she's particularly good at making her points – and making us feel clever.  Most important, she's just plain funny, physically and verbally.” Lauren has contributed short stories to Slake magazine, Swivel and her short story “Diary of a Journal reader” was included in Dave Eggars “Best of Non Required Reading 2007”.  Sasquatch Books released her first book, a collection of comedic essays, A WOMAN TRAPPED IN A WOMAN'S BODY (TALES FROM A LIFE OF CRINGE) which the Kirkus Review identified as one of the Top Ten Indy Books of 2007. Lauren currently lives and performs in Los Angeles.
