Our luxury tourism market is booming. Data from Grand View Research estimates our luxury travel market generated nearly $8 billion last year and that could more than double by 2033. Travel agency Luxury Escapes says bookings to New Zealand are up nearly 40% year-on-year and it's seen an increase of about 20% for experience-based travel, like winery tours or wellness retreats. Hotel Council Aotearoa Strategic Director James Doolan told Francesca Rudkin that New Zealand is benefiting from a lot of global tailwinds in tourism and travel. He says as people get wealthier and reach a certain basic level of security, they want to travel and experience the rest of the world. Things are continuing to flourish in Queenstown. The mid-scale ‘Holiday Inn Express & Suites', which boasts 277 rooms in the City Centre, is being refurbished to become ‘voco Queenstown' – part of IHG's premium portfolio. The move targets high-end tourism, with the hotel running at around 90% occupancy for nine months of the year. Hotel Council Aotearoa Strategic Director James Doolan told Mike Hosking that it's normal to think about renovating and repositioning every seven to ten years, but upgrading to the next level is an encouraging sign. He says central government's increased investment in event attraction and destination marketing has allowed private businesses to invest in their assets. Episode Summary In this episode of Building Better Cultures, Scott McInnes sits down with Denise Black and Denis Doolan to explore the critical role of leadership in shaping organisational culture. Together, they unpack insights from the Mind the Gap report — highlighting the importance of intentionality, inclusivity, and the need for leaders to embody the culture they wish to create. The conversation delves into the consequences of neglecting culture, the essential capabilities leaders must develop, and the collaborative process of defining a target culture that aligns with organisational strategy. The episode wraps up with reflections on how leadership drives cultural change and performance across teams. Key Takeaways Leaders have a disproportionate impact on organisational culture. Inclusivity is essential for effective culture creation. Culture should be woven into the strategic DNA of the organisation. Empathy and active listening are critical leadership skills. Culture is not a standalone initiative — it enables all initiatives. Intentionality in leadership is crucial for cultural success. Feedback from employees is vital in shaping target culture. Communication reinforces culture and values. Leaders must model the behaviours they wish to see. A strong culture leads to better organisational performance. This week we welcome one of the stars of Sisu (2022) Jack Doolan to discuss this incredible, fun, kick-ass film that just released wide in the USA, and man does it pack more than a few punches in its tight 91 minutes. Jack plays a Nazi soldier who operates as the tank gunner and second in command to a brutal SS officer (Aksel Hennie) attempting to rob a rugged gold miner (Jorma Tommila) in the Finnish wilderness in 1944. That was a really bad decision by them. While this movie doesn't shy away from the brutality of WWII, it's fun, funny, badass, and gives you something to root for. Directed by Jamari Helander, this movie crushed at TIFF and got distributed by Lionsgate and it just rules. It's in over 1,000 screens so get your friends to see it as soon as possible!  Find all of our Socials at: https://linktr.ee/theloveofcinema  Intro: 0:00; Movie Review & Interview: 11:06; Spoilers: 26:28; What You Been Watching: 1:22:12 Cast/Crew: Jamari Helander, Teams Wäinölä, Juri Seppä, Kjell Lagerroos, Juho Virolainen, Jorma Tommie, Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, Tatu Sinisalo, Onni Tommila, Aamu Milonoff, Severi Sarinen, Mila Leppälä, Jasmi Mäenpää, Nora Nevis, Jenna Tyni, Vincent Willestrand, Arttu Kapulainen, Ilkka Koivula.  Additional Tags: Rare Exports, Big Game, The Fakir, Karkurit, The Martian, Wingman, Headhunters, Max Manus, The Cloverfield Paradox, Finland, Norway, Helsinki, The Boys, Herogasm, TNT, Reindeer, The Fly, Cockroaches, Toronto, Celsius, Fahrenheit, AMC, Dolby Digital, Paw Patrol, Super Mario Bros The Movie, orgy, salmon, scars, vistas, lens flares, Succession season 4, Maththew Macfadyen, Kieran Culkin, Electricians, Finnish, Bon Ives, Holocene, penis, attic, Hereditary, Midsommar, Magnolia, Damien Chazelle, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lost Angeles, New York City, AFI, Theater, The Truman Show, Mom Issues, Corporate meetings, locker rooms.
