Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This is a podcast where we talk to guests about their favorite albums. This week on the pod we're joined by Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices. We talked about Siouxsie and the Banshees' 1980 album, "Kaleidoscope." We also chat about growing up in Ohio, Doug's first bands and our Charlotte connection. On top of playing in Guided by Voices, Doug has also spent time in Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Nada Surf and so many others. We chat a lot on the episode about one of his first bands with his friend Frasier Sims, Children's Crusade. He's currently working on releasing their discography on LP, in one place for the first time on November 15th on Splendid Research. It's totally remixed, remastered and is a total gem that complements this episode really well. So if you like early proto-goth, punk, or post-punk then keep an eye out for that in the coming months. Guided By Voices just released their newest album, "Strut of Kings," which you can pick up now. For a few decades now, it seems like Doug Gillard is everywhere. He's the second longest tenured member of the wildly prolific Guided By Voices, behind frontman, Robert Pollard, having been in and out (mostly in) of the band since the mid-90s. He is also a long-time guitarist for alternative rock stalwarts, Nada Surf, having played with the group since 2010. His work has earned him spots on the linear notes of many of indie rock's biggest names, as he continues playing with a variety of of groups, including the early Beatles homage, Bambi Kino. In episode 23 of Accolades Video Series I talk to Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices) about Tony McPhee, a blues guitarist from Humberston, United Kingdom. He is the founder of The Groundhogs. An early version of this band backed Champion Jack Dupree and John Lee Hooker on UK concerts in the mid-1960s. He is often credited as Tony (T.S.) McPhee. He was given this name by the producer Mike Vernon who suggested adding ‘T.S.' to his name.

We're joined by songwriter, producer, and legendary indie rock guitar slinger, Doug Gillard, known most widely as the longtime guitarist for Robert Pollard's Guided by Voices. Crucial matters discussed include: growing up in Ohio and why that state has produced so many incredible rock bands; the bizarre ritual of the audiences in Florida showering Guided by Voices with beer at shows; Doug's sidework with Nada Surf, Neko Case, The Hold Steady, and Oranges Band, among others; the astonishing productivity of Guided by Voices and their amazing new record, Earth Man Blues; working with Ric Okasek from The Cars on GBV's Do the Collapse and Rob Schnapf on Isolation Drills; and so much more.
My top ten favorite Guided By Voices tracks.

GBV's second record of 2019 is a return to what the band does best: lo-fi indie rock.
Doug Gillard, Mark Shue, and Bobby Bare Jr reveal how a few quirky vintage pedals, some classic amps, and a modest amount of utilitarian pedals get the job done night after night.

This week we speak with legendary indie rocker Doug Gillard. Between solo records and endless days of touring and recording with Guided By Voices, Doug has found a home with Nada Surf, who ironically enough, are set to release a brand new album this week titled ‘You Know Who You Are.’ This is a short 25 minute show this week, but we’ve got some excited things happening very soon. Enjoy!
Live From The Barrage
From Guided By Voices to Nada Surf, if you can think of a seminal indie rock band from the past 20 years, there's a pretty decent chance Doug Gillard's put in time among their ranks at some point or other. The journeyman guitar player also has a accomplished solo career, with his latest, Parade On, due out in a few weeks. Fittingly, the song's every bit as diverse as one would expect from an artist with a seemingly endless parade of projects. Gillard joins us over some green tea and bourbon to discuss the Beatles, Ohio and playing with some of the best rock and roll bands going.
