I had Lee Landey on to discuss the 1987 movie 'Cobra Verde'. Hell yeah.

Dave Hill is a comedian, writer, musician, actor, radio host, and man-about-town originally from Cleveland, Ohio but now living in New York City in a totally sweet apartment with a party deck and everything. Hot chicks come over to hang out and eat cheese plates and stuff with him all the time and it's awesome. Anyway, on the show business front, Dave has appeared on Netflix's The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks with You Amazon's The Tick, Peacock TV's Girls5Eva, Comedy Central's @midnightand Inside Amy Schumer programs, TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show, and TruTV's Comedy Knockout among a bunch of others. He is a frequent on-air host for HBO and Cinemax and has been on channels like MTV, VH1, BBC-America, and the Sundance Channel a whole bunch too. Dave also starred in his own television program The King of Miami on the Mojo Network, which was cancelled even though Dave really liked it. The show also aired in the United Kingdom on Sky TV's Film24 Channel. And you can still watch The King of Miami on Hulu too, which Dave is super pumped about. Oh, and Dave was a correspondent on Hoppus on Music starring Blink 182's Mark Hoppus on the Fuse channel, which ruled. Dave has been on other shows and in obscure movies too but let's keep moving for now. Dave performs live comedy over the world and has appeared at such festivals as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Sasquatch Festival, Bumbershoot, Bonnaroo, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Crap Comedy Festival in Oslo, Outside Lands in San Francisco, and then some other ones too. He has also performed comedy at Sing Sing Correctional Facility twice and even ripped some guitar solos inside a Mexican prison a couple times too. In 2007, Variety magazine named Dave one of their “10 Comedians to Watch,” something he still won't shut up about. Some things are hard to let go of. Dave hosted his own radio show The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU in Jersey City, New Jersey every Monday night from 9pm to midnight for years and now hosts the podcast Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident, which is also broadcast on the UK's Fubar Radio, So...You're Canadian with Dave Hill, and History Fluffer, on which he is joined by Jim Biederman, Jodi Lennon, and Chris Gersbeck. Dave is also a frequent contributor to public radio's Live from Here with Chris Thile and This American Life. He has also appeared on podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla Show, The Nerdist, and then roughly 78 other ones besides those. Dave is the author of four books, including his brand new book The Awesome Game: One Man's Incredible, Globe-Crushing Hockey Odyssey, in addition to Parking the Moose (Doubleday Canada/Penguin Random House 2019), Tasteful Nudes (St. Martins Press, 2012) and Dave Hill Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Blue Rider Press 2016). He has also written for the New York Times, GQ, Salon, The Paris Review, McSweeney's, New York Observer, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, VICE, Guitar World, and a bunch of other places too. Comedy legend Dick Cavett called Dave “a major figure among American comic writers, past and present,” which is pretty much the coolest thing that has ever happened as far as Dave is concerned. Dave is also a musician who currently sings and plays guitar in the power pop band Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song to HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and the psych/garage rock band Painted Doll. He was also a member of Cleveland rock bands Sons of Elvis and Cobra Verde as well as Diamondsnake, a heavy metal band with Moby. Additionally, Dave has played guitar for Walter Schreifels and muscle metal band Thor and bass for Lucy Wainwright Roche and former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley. He also contributed musical scores to films such as Dirty Deeds, Shoot First and Pray You Live, and then some other ones besides those two. Dave's Info https://www.davehillonline.com
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This is a podcast where we talk to guests about their favorite albums. This week on the pod we're joined by Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices. We talked about Siouxsie and the Banshees' 1980 album, "Kaleidoscope." We also chat about growing up in Ohio, Doug's first bands and our Charlotte connection. On top of playing in Guided by Voices, Doug has also spent time in Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Nada Surf and so many others. We chat a lot on the episode about one of his first bands with his friend Frasier Sims, Children's Crusade. He's currently working on releasing their discography on LP, in one place for the first time on November 15th on Splendid Research. It's totally remixed, remastered and is a total gem that complements this episode really well. So if you like early proto-goth, punk, or post-punk then keep an eye out for that in the coming months. Guided By Voices just released their newest album, "Strut of Kings," which you can pick up now. So check their site for more info and everything GBV related... https://www.guidedbyvoices.com Subscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)
What's your most loved and least favorite song on Guided By Voices' 492nd album Bee Thousand?! Adam overcame his fear of assigning a 20 song record because he felt we needed to do more indie classics. Fun to hear his three co-hosts' take on a challenging 1994 lo-fi listen that was once named by Amazon music writers as the #1 indie album of all-time. We get a surprise Zoom visit from longtime 91X program director Garett Michaels (check out an extra ten minutes of his golden throat soon on Youtube) and remote opinions from Jon Wurster (Superchunk/Mountain Goats/Best Show) and Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows).

The summer is the real rock and roll season. From the very beginning of Chuck Berry and our other musical grandfathers, these three months have inspired a ton of great tunes. Since summer officially began just two days ago it was only natural that I bring back that theme for tonight’s broadcast. There are so many songs dedicated to this time of year that I easily put together a playlist that is primarily brand new tracks. In fact, one highlighted album, Jagger Holly’s Rivoltella, came out just two days ago! There’s also a set dedicated to tracks from summer’s favorite record label, Rum Bar Records, along with a handful of older tunes from new reissues of albums by The Barracudas and The Lemonheads. Of course, there’s also this week’s entry in the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” subtheme, and if you really think about it that song certainly does fit the summer theme. This week’s contribution is from the veteran Cleveland band Cobra Verde, and their 2005 album, Copycat Killers. And like always, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take […]

This month Lee takes a casual look into one of his favourite musical artists who often composed scores for film. That would be Florian Fricke, the leader and central creative force behind the musical collective known as Popol Vuh. Popol Vuh created music both in the studio for their own releases and to score several films, most notably in collaboration with prolific film maker Werner Herzog. In this episode Lee plays some of his favourite tracks from those collaborations with Herzog (at least from the ones he could source). To spare you Lee's terrible pronunciations of German titles, he does none of the usual intros to the tracks this episode, and reserves his general comments to the opening of the show. --Aguirre I (l'acrime di rei & Flöte); Morgengruss II; & Agnus Dei from "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" (1972) --Tracks 1 & 4 from "The Great Ecstasy of the Woodcarver Steiner" (1975) --Engel Der Gegenwart & Hüter Der Schwelle from "Heart of Glass" (1976) --Brüder Des Schattens; Mantra 2; & Die Nacht Der Himmel from "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (1979) --Wehe Khorazin & Im Garten der Gemeinschaft from "Fitzcarraldo" (1982) --Der Tod des Cobra Verde from "Cobra Verde" (1988) Opening and closing music: Magic and Ecstasy from "Exorcist II: The Heretic" by Ennio Morricone, and The Shadow of the Killer from "Death Rage" by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis.

Klaus Kinski again appears as That Freaky Guy Who Insists On Going To The Jungle, this time portraying Francisco Manoel da Silva (better known by his outlaw codename, “Cobra Verde”), who's chased there by his plantation owner boss who has no interest in being his father-in-law after Francisco impregnates the baron's three teenage daughters. Oops! Cobra Verde's attempts to kickstart the cold engine of the slave trade on the West African coast, and everything that derail them, make up the rest of an inscrutable plot. In this episode, we discuss our confusion over how the titular character is built, where the movie's satirical lens is pointed, its fairly misguided attempts at ‘authentic' portrayal of African cultures, and how the surly, perfectly pitched magic of AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD (1972) and NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE (1979) don't seem to have rubbed off on this one. Some of the pieces contained will be known to you from the Original Soundtrack of the film, whilst others are appearing here for the first time. We're joined by songwriter, producer, and legendary indie rock guitar slinger, Doug Gillard, known most widely as the longtime guitarist for Robert Pollard's Guided by Voices. Crucial matters discussed include: growing up in Ohio and why that state has produced so many incredible rock bands; the bizarre ritual of the audiences in Florida showering Guided by Voices with beer at shows; Doug's sidework with Nada Surf, Neko Case, The Hold Steady, and Oranges Band, among others; the astonishing productivity of Guided by Voices and their amazing new record, Earth Man Blues; working with Ric Okasek from The Cars on GBV's Do the Collapse and Rob Schnapf on Isolation Drills; and so much more.

Beyond that movie, Frank's list this week also includes Alex Cox's Straight to Hell, Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django, Werner Herzog's Cobra Verde, and Robert Downey Sr.'s Greaser's Palace. Palmen, blaues Meer, weiß-grauer Strand - was will man mehr?

We also discuss hamburgers in Akron, making music with Patrick Carney of the Black Keys, how John met Doug Gillard, the Wrecking Crew, snot caked on pants, protest songs and why Sad Bugles would be a weird name for a band. Jeremy awakens from a dream, tells us about it, then brags about... good green beer? Cobra Verde strikes back. Michael had something called DAF that was DAF. Jeremy rescinds his previous statements on Hazy IPAs. Michael runs down some 4th Anniversary Stats which leads into more stats from the Brewer's Association. No trivia this week, but what is that noise? For the FDR, we conclude a "high-cost" multi-year experiment, though what price can you put on science? A last minutes brews news finishes off the show.Beer in this episode: Trappistes Rochefort 8Cheers!

Bob pairs up with Cleveland band Cobra Verde for a record that sounds like the Who, except on all those tracks where it doesn’t.
In this episode of the Director's Club, we take a look at the unrestrainable visions of legendary German director Werner Herzog, following his quest to give audiences a sense of the "ecstatic truth" through his films. He'll use any tool at his disposal to deliver this truth, from documentary techniques to hypnosis (and if there isn't a tool, he'll make one himself!). We'll look at how the films span the globe from the Amazon to the Sahara to Wisconsin, and how his Muses of Madness Bruno S. and Klaus K. enhance the journeys we take. What we can't do is fit all his works in a single episode, so this will cover from his first film "Signs of Life" through his 1987 film "Cobra Verde", and scattered throughout are quotes from the "Soldier of Cinema" himself! (8:23) "Signs of Life" (29:21) "Even Dwarfs Started Small" (40:34) "Fata Morgana" (52:59) "Land of Silence and Darkness" (1:11:09) "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" (1:30:06) "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" (1:48:47) "Heart of Glass" (2:05:57) "Stroszek" (2:24:21) "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (2:40:02) "Woyzeck" (2:52:39) "Fitzcarraldo" (3:13:27) "Where the Green Ants Dream" (3:21:03) "Cobra Verde"

STORYTELLERS: John Cobra Verde Petkovic (Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Guided By Voices) Tony Erba (Fuck You Pay Me, 9 Shocks Terror, H-100s, Face Value) This is a really great one. Chris and Sean kick off May and their Werner Herzog retrospective with a look at his final collaboration with master actor Klaus Kinski, Cobra Verde. The film stars Kinski as the eponymous Cobra Verde as he is tasked with revitalizing the slave trade between Brazil and Ghana. It's a fantastically Herzogian look at the human soul and the downfall of man that is slavery. As always, you can follow Chris Stachiw on Twitter at @KultureStach, Sean Liang at @Seannifer and Kulture Shocked at @KultureShocked. The new intro and outro music is Wovoka's "Lament", and big thanks to them for allowing us to use their song. You can also subscribe to the Kulturecast on iTunes here. Also, don't forget to check out our official Facebook page for news, upcoming reviews, contests, and new content.
On today's show, I talk to comedian and musician Dave Hill. Dave got his start playing in indie rock bands in the 1990s, such as Sons of Elvis and Cobra Verde. While he still plays music today, his main focus is on writing, performing and hosting, dividing his time between Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident on Maximum Fun, The Dave Hill Explosion at UCB, The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU, contributing to This American Life, among many other projects. His first book, Tasteful Nudes, was published in 2012.Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter!

Shock World Service 032 At The End She Was Gone by Jon Averill 09/04/10 London, United Kingdom 1. Idioma – Landscapes It took me weeks to settle on the right track to open this episode but I think this was the right choice, or maybe not, can I change? 2. Luke Vibert - Sharp A2 This is a track i've loved for years but never really had a chance to share. Its taken from the Mo' Wax compilation 'Headz 2'. Luke Vibert has produced astounding music no matter what style he applies himself too. This track has the elements of what became a the clichéd 'trip-hop' style but when the piano drops the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. 3. Roll The Dice - Guadeloupe A more positive aspect of the internet music revolution is the chance to discover music that may have otherwise passed you by. Roll The Dice are a case in point. An enchanting collaboration between two Swedish studio boffins, Peder Mannerfelt & Malcolm Pardon. 4. Sir Lady Java - My Mom Said This song took me about fifteen years to track down & as far as I know it was never officially released. Its taken from a soundtrack to the H-Street skateboard video ‘A Soldier's Story'. Thinking back my first exposure to alternative music came from the soundtrack to skate videos. 5. Harold Budd - Neil's Theme Harold Budd, an American ambient/avant-garde composer (& sometimes poet). ‘Neil's Theme' is a collaboration with Cocteau Twins & Violet Indiana guitarist Robin Guthrie and is taken from the soundtrack to ‘Mysterious Skin'. 6. Moondog – Couplet The shortest ever track on the podcasts comes from Moondog. An artist I have become obsessed with recently so no doubt you'll be hearing a lot more from him in forthcoming podcasts. 7. Lionrock - Snapshot On Pollard Street I recently rediscovered Justin Robertson's 'An Instinct For Detection' from 1997. Another release that that has been lost in the mid nineties big beat mist. 8. Hawkwind - Welcome To The Future Freakout interlude from the legendary English 'space rock' act. 9. Piano Magic - A Fond Fairwell From their latest album 'Ovation'. On first listen it reminded me a lot of Dead Can Dance & on further investigation DCD percussionist Peter Ulrich features on this track. So basically what i'm saying is that I was absolutely right. 10. Popul Vuh - Der Tod De Corba Verde Another act that have been a huge influence on me since I was very young. This track is taken from the ‘Cobra Verde' OST. 11. Luisine - Two Dots One of the first tracks I picked out for this podcast when I started it way back in 2009. Its a perfectly formed piece of electronic pop & sonically it has a lot in common with this podcasts opening track from Idioma. 12. Brian Eno – Becalmed Brian Eno could be the one artist who best sums up the World Service. He's appeared numerous times in episodes from our DJs. This track 'Becalmed' is from my favourite album of his, 'Another Green World'. 13. Adrian Munsey - I Think Its Going To Rain Today A crackly old 7" 'I Think Its Going To Rain Today' is a Randy Newman track has been covered by David Gray, Bette Midler, Claudine Longet, Judy Collins, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond, Peggy Lee, UB40 & Peter Gabriel. This may be the best version. 14. Orbital - Belfast/Wasted In my teen years while most were listening to Nirvana and other long haired paragons, my walkman cassettes principally contained music from Orbital. It probably speaks volume of my lack of emotional depth that two middle aged bald men making instrumental music were the most important band of my teenage years. This is a rare version of 'Belfast' released as a promo only in 1995 and features new vocals by Grant Fulton. In memory of Maria Averill
