Today’s guest, Sanyin Siang, is the executive director for the Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics (COLE) at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and a professor with its Pratt School of Engineer. She is an advisor for Google Ventures (GV), Sports Innovation Labs, Duke Corporate Education and author of The Launch Book: Motivational Stories to Launch Your Idea, Business, or Next Career. If that list isn’t enough to get you to press play on this episode, you should also know that she has over 1 million followers on LinkedIn. Yet, while that is something we felt eager to point out, she shared how she has had to learn to hold on loosely to that following, which was some advice all of us in this busy social-media-driven world needed to hear. In our conversation, she shared why she recently took some time to write her own obituary. Turns out she realized that what she wants to be remembered for isn’t her professional success, or even her number of followers—it’s something bigger and more important than both of these... Listen in to hear the difference between enabling and chasing greatness, what Coach K does to inspire both 19-year-old college athletes and the superstar NBA players on Team USA, and why planning your life with the end in mind might give you some clarity you didn’t even know you needed. As a CEO coach, she applies an ecosystem approach to problem solving, innovation, and culture building. She is an original member of Marshall Goldsmith's 100 Coaches, as well as an advisor for Google Ventures, The Sports Innovation Lab, and DukeCE (the #1 Financial Times ranked custom education provider for 12 consecutive years). Her The Launch Book draws on first-hand stories and behavioral science principles to help us all be braver about launching – because she believes that we’re all “launching” all the time. Stew and Sanyin talk about what happens when we’re trying something new—whether it’s an idea at work, a big move in our personal lives, or the start of a company. We often encounter self-doubt and fear. Sanyin shares what she learned about how to overcome these obstacles both at work and at home by, for example, using “Inspiration Boards” and “Impact Boards,” tools she learned about from the San Francisco Giants. She speaks about the importance of building your tribe and the value of including naysayers in it; those haters, after all, can help you see your blind spots. And she talks about finding your superpower, something you’re so good at that you assume everyone’s good at it. What’s yours? What is that thing you’re not only good at, that’s not only a strength, but that really energizes you? If you don’t know, then your tribe can help you find it. Women earn 17 percent less per week than men, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Liz Ananat and Karin Agness debate the pay gap between men and women -- what it means, where it's worst, and what's driving it -- on this episode of Zeroing In: The Numbers Behind the 2016 Election, moderated by Aaron Chatterji. Zeroing In takes a look at key issues on the election agenda, one number at a time. Numbers matter, but in politics, they can be used to muddy the waters rather than enlighten. Each episode of Zeroing starts with one key statistic tied to a critical issue in the 2016 election. Experts from different points on the political spectrum debate what that number means -- and what it doesn't mean -- with help from moderator Aaron Chatterji, an associate professor at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and Sanford School of Public Policy. Ananat is an economist, an associate professor in Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy and a faculty fellow of Duke's Center for Child and Family Policy. Today's guest is Dorie Clark. She's a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Time and Entrepreneur. She's been recognized as a branding expert by The Associated Press, Inc, and Fortune. What's a brand? Yeah we're gonna talk about that with Dorie. I believe I have a brand; sometimes I hesitate to admit it because I think it sounds, sometimes, a little snobby to say that I have a brand. But she puts it in a way that really democratizes this concept of having a personal brand. You have a brand, whether you're working at a company, an entrepreneur, a mom staying at home with your kids raising them, you have a brand! And so the earlier you recognize that, and nurture that, and cultivate that, the better off you can be. Now Dorie also serves as a marketing strategy consultant and speaker for many notable clients, including Google, Microsoft, Yale University, Fidelity, and World Bank among others. She's the author of two great books; the first is called "Reinventing You", and more recently she's the author of "Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It". She currently is an adjunct professor of business administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, and a visiting professor for IE Business School in Madrid. Dorie was also featured on Huffington Post as a 100 Must Follow on Twitter in 2013 and 2014. She's also on the Nifty 50 list of top women on Twitter, and most notably she was named on of Inc Magazine's 100 Great Leadership Speakers for Your Next Conference, and recognized in Forbes as one of 25 professional networking experts to watch in 2015. So she is, as it pertains to branding and leadership, she's your go-to and she's on the show today. So I'm very honored.
