The doctor said, “You are going blind, and there is no cure.” My mom burst into tears, and I remember thinking, “This can't be happening to me.” -Eavan O'Neill When she was only 13 years old, Eavan O'Neill started having trouble seeing the blackboard at school. A gifted athlete, she began missing the ball while playing lacrosse and soccer. One of her coaches suggested that she have her eyes checked. Unfortunately, glasses didn't do much to solve the problem. Throughout her teens, Eavan's eyesight continued to deteriorate, and in this interview, she admits that wishful thinking set in until one day, she mistook the moon for a street light and it was obvious something was very wrong. Diagnosed at 20 by Rachel Huckfeldt, MD, PhD, an opthalmologist in the Inherited Retinal Disorders Service at Mass Eye And Ear, with a rare and incurable condition called Stargardt disease, Eavan is now legally blind. In this interview, she recalls returning to St. Lawrence University after her diagnosis in January 2020, only to go home two months later to her family in Yarmouth, Maine, due to the pandemic. Distraught and uncertain about her future, she accepted an invitation from her neighbor to go for a run and discovered that running flipped a switch inside of her. Says Eavan: “Running has made me feel strong, happy, and capable again.” An experienced marathoner who can only see 4 feet in front of her, Eavan runs to raise awareness and funds for a cure for Stargardt disease. Now a Development Officer at Mass General Brigham, Eavan is determined to be a voice for anyone struggling with this rare disease: “I felt so isolated when I was first diagnosed. It was like diving off of a cliff into no-man's land. It's hard to find hope. That's what I want to be for people. Hope.” Although she still has “bad blind girl days,” Eavan looks on the bright side with her Instagram handle @bright.side_group. For the May edition of Embers, we are elated to be joined by two amazing athletes and Mainers, Eavan O'Neill and Skyler Samuelson Espinoza. In 2020 Eavan was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Stargardt's Disease that causes vision loss. Following her diagnosis and the onset of the pandemic, Eavan took to the outdoors by running, which soon grew into a passion. A year later, Eavan ran the Maine Marathon, raising money for research to find treatment for genetic eye diseases, and her passion for long distances continues. Though initially a collegiate rower, Skyler found herself as a “pilot” on the United States' Paralympic Cycling team, following her success as an individual cyclist. As an athlete with unimpaired vision, Skyler teams up with a visually impaired athlete to race in tandem.

Former high school athlete Eavan O'Neill began running marathons as a result of a life-altering event. During her senior year in college at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, Eavan was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a rare form of macular degeneration that causes vision loss, and often leads to blindness.  Soon after receiving this diagnosis, Eavan's school closed due to Covid restrictions. Eavan found herself back in her hometown of Yarmouth, Maine. While processing the initial shock of the diagnosis, and attempting to understand the new life in front of her, Eavan found solace and strength through running with a fellow Yarmouth High School graduate. Eavan went public with her condition in order to garner support for organizations such as the Foundation Fighting Blindness. In 2023, Eavan ran her first Boston Marathon, raising money for the research work of Rachel Huckfeldt, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist in the Inherited Retinal Disorders Service at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston. With the help of another Yarmouth High School graduate, Eavan shared her story with the sustainably-oriented Janji running company, where she was named to the Janji Field Team as a “Marathoner + Advocate for the Blind and Visually Impaired Community.” Join our conversation with Eavan O'Neill today on Radio Maine.

In this episode, I read "Atlantis - A Lost Sonnet" by Eavan Boland.  2020 refuses to relent. It is a crash course in endings and loss. This poem by Eavan who passed away just this April, is an evocative question and answer. She begins with a reference to the mythical city of Atlantis and asks how can a city just disappear? But is then reminded of things and people who have disappeared from her life. She comes to a conclusion both rich and humbling about how human beings deal with loss.
