We caught up with Maeve Cooke, Director and Stephen McNeice, Special Projects Officer from the mighty Access Cinema to talk about the independent cinema scene in Ireland and how their work develops and supports exhibitors across the island.  We talked about how Access Cinema was established in 1977, how independent cinema has developed and how they bring the wide world of cinema to all arts and parts.  Since Film Hub NI was created in 2013 we've found the support, advice and inspiration of the Access Cinema team invaluable, so it was a pleasure to sit down and learn more about their work in detail.  Support the Show.Supported by National Lottery funds, Film Hub NI was established in 2013 by Queen's Film Theatre, Belfast in their capacity as NI's BFI Film Hub Lead Organisation (FHLO). With us this episode are filmmaker Janis Pugh & actor, director & writer Tilda Cobham-Hervey - just two of the brilliant women showcased at the Edinburgh Festivals 2023. Anna Smith also gives top tips of other female-led highlights of the Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh International Book Festival, and - of course - Edinburgh International Film Festival. Our first guest is Janis Pugh, writer/director of Chuck Chuck Baby which will receive its World Premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival on 20th August. The feature is a musical comedy drama that celebrates female working class friendship and love in Wales. Helen, played by Louise Brealey (Sherlock, Smack the Pony) is stuck packing chickens by night and by day cares for a dying mother figure. Her life takes an unexpected turn with the return of Joanne, played by Annabel Scholey (Being Human, Walking on Sunshine). Janis Pugh joins Anna for a lively chat about her personal experiences of working in a chicken factory in Wales, and talks about the camaraderie she saw that inspired the film. She also explains why love is at the heart of the film, and talks about the fragile male character of Gary, played by Celyn Jones. We also chat with actor, director & writer Tilda Cobham-Hervey who, as well as working in film and TV, also works in live art and is bringing her intimate audio adventure Two Strangers Walk Into A Bar… to the Fringe. Tilda chats about her journey to making the production, and her love of immersive live experience, as well as the effects that the piece has on the two-strong audience. Anna Smith will be sharing her reaction to the piece as she updates live from the festivals, so stay tuned on the socials below. Before COVID-19, UK & Ireland cinema admissions were booming - increasing year on year, with Northern Ireland performing particularly well. Shutting the entire film sector down practically overnight has had a massive impact on every aspect, from production right through to exhibition. Many cinema operators moved to explore online players, distributors moved to show films online – missing out theatrical runs entirely, and audiences had an overwhelming choice. Do audiences still value the collective experience? How can we even measure the impact of online events? This week we invited a bunch of super creative people working in the Film/Theatre industry in the U.K to talk about their experiences navigating the film industry as black men and women. 'No More Wings' has just been showcased at 'We Are One' Global Film Festival, written and directed by Abraham Adeyami. It tells the heartfelt story of 2 childhood friends, Jude and Isaac. You watch them as kids in the local chicken shop and as adults, split between the 2 different times in their lives. Exploring friendship and personal dreams, goals and now the different paths they are heading in. The heart, realism and beauty in the way it's written and the actors have played out their parts makes this story incredibly impactful, especially right now.We sat down over zoom with the cast and crew and spoke movie making, inspiration and most importantly reflected on the racism and prejudice the industry is built on and how you navigate that.Guests, Director/Writer, Abraham Adeyemi, Producer, Abiola Rufai and Actors, Ivanno Jeremiah, Parys Jordon, Joshua Cameron and Tyrus Mckenzie.Podcast DetailsHost/Producer MaxProducer Joseph ArcherFor more interviews/reviews/recommendations FlipYourWig.netGet in touch Max@FlipYourwig.netSubscribe, share and leave a comment. This week, we've been in Northern Ireland to meet the creators of 'Abomination' an opera and accompanying documentary about homophobia in Northern Irish politics. Abomination - a DUP Opera by the Belfast Emsemble explores the hateful rhetoric and foul abuse hurled at the LGBQT+ community by some evangelicals and hardliners in Northern Ireland - language which would be unacceptable in most countries but has somehow become a common part of discourse here. Written by Conor Mitchell, the work has received rave reviews since launching in late 2019.The opera has also been transformed into an accompanying documentary by Nicky Larkin, which was due to be premiered at the Queen's Film Theatre in Belfast as part of the Imagine festival. Whilst the Coronavirus outbreak has seen the premiere postponed, you can see a trailer here, and Nicky has promised to publish excerpts in the near future.Unfortunately, a proposed tour is also now on hold due to Coronavirus, but the show will be back on the road soon!Welcome to Up The Arts, a weekly podcast for those proud to be be involved in theatre, music, art and literature in the LGBTQ+ world! Tricia Brouk             Yes, Everyone is Judging You  It is said that the #1 fear in the world is public speaking, well ahead of #5, which is death. Does that seem right?  Would you rather be dead than to have to speak in front of others?  It is human to fear others judging us, yet as a leader that fear must be conquered if you are to communicate your thoughts and motivate others to action.  Getting your ideas across is paramount to your success.  You need to lead teams and companies to their goals.  Yet, if you struggle communicating with passion and conviction and motivating others to act, you are missing the mark.  It is not uncommon to be poor at public speaking, and it is absolutely a skill you can conquer – and conquer you must!  Check out this podcast as Steve talks with an expert in helping others communicate their big idea and to develop an Oscar-worthy presentation.   To learn more about Tricia Brouk and her work, click here.       Click here to check out our newest leadership development tool – LEAD – Leadership Education and Development              Steve Caldwell is an executive mentor and coach to managers and leaders who desire to excel in their career and become the leader others want to follow. Following a string of seasoned moviemakers such as Luc Besson, Doug Liman and Steven Soderbergh, we bring you a relative novice this week in the shape of Benedict Andrews. At least - a novice in cinematic terms. For Benedict is one of the world's foremost theatre and opera directors, who makes the transition to the screen with psychological thriller Una. Given this is Benedict's first film, much of the conversation focuses on the differences between the mediums in which he's worked. It also gives us an opportunity to play you examples of music from his stage productions, including extracts from Alex Baranowski's smoky, cinematic score for Streetcar Named Desire, which starred Gillian Anderson. But there's plenty to discuss when it come to Una too. Starring the ever excellent Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn, the narrative centres on a woman confronting an older man about a illicit sexual relationship which took place in their past. The film is scored by Benedict's friend Jed Kurzel, whose work we discussed at length during a previous show with Jed's brother, Justin. Jed has developed a reputation as a composer of serious weight, as evidence by the fact he and the London Contemporary Orchestra recently provided the music for Ridley Scott's Alien Covenant. Hardly surprising, then, that Benedict turned to his old mate on taking the plunge from stage to screen ...

All The President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 41, I join Sydney-based writer/director/producer/editor, Michael McLennan. Michael and I discuss entering the paranoia genre with Oliver Stone's "Nixon" and "The X-Files," the intimidation of an offscreen and unseen antagonist, the burgeoning optimism in the text and always finding a way back to talking about Michael Mann.About Michael McLennanMichael McLennan is an Australian-based writer/director whose short films have played at film festivals around the world.
