In this episode, we dive deep into the concept of social connection and explore its critical role in our lives. We'll unpack the three components that make up social connection and how they influence our health, wealth, and general well-being. We then tackle a hotly debated question: Is social media to blame for the loneliness epidemic? Or is it simply a tool that, when misused, amplifies existing issues? Using examples from history and modern technology, we'll explore both the benefits and drawbacks of our hyper-connected digital world.Plus, we answer audience questions from my Instagram (@travischappell), such as:How to keep in touch with a new friend without coming off as clingy? Why is making friends so difficult in your mid-30s?Let's dive into it!Key Topics Covered:What is Social Connection?Social connection is a dynamic, continuous spectrum, not a simple on/off switch. It evolves over time and changes due to factors like life events, health, job transitions, and more.We discuss how chronic loneliness and social isolation, even in our hyper-connected age, remain major health concerns. The Impact of Technology on Social Connection:Technology plays a dual role: it can foster connection, especially for marginalized groups, but can also displace in-person interactions and lower the quality of social bonds. We dive into stats, like how Americans spend 6 hours a day on digital media and how social media use has exploded among both teens and adults.Benefits like online support groups versus downsides like distraction and increased loneliness are discussed. Is Social Media the Culprit Behind Loneliness?Social media is an accelerant but not the root cause. Loneliness has been on the rise since long before the advent of social platforms. We draw comparisons to historical technological advancements, such as the steamboat and diesel engine, showing that each era faces challenges from new inventions.Instead of blaming technology, we discuss how we can rise to the challenge, much like past generations did.Three Ways Social Media Influences Our Daily Lives:It affects how we connect, often replacing face-to-face time with virtual interactions.Social media can exacerbate the fear of missing out (FOMO) and contribute to feelings of inadequacy and isolation. It reshapes our communication habits, creating shorter attention spans and less meaningful conversations.Listener Q&A:How to maintain excitement in new friendships without seeming overbearing. Why making friends becomes more challenging as we get older, especially when moving to new cities.Key Quotes:"Is social media to blame for all of this? I don't think so. But is it an accelerant? Absolutely. It's gasoline on the fire.""We as humans are not built to go backwards. When new technology presents new problems, we find new ways to solve those problems."Additional Resources:Douglas Brunt's book on Rudolf Diesel and the diesel engine – A fascinating dive into how past technological advancements solved problems and created new ones.Check out my Instagram (@travischappell) for Q&A submissions for future episodes!Connect with Me:Instagram: @travischappellBook a 15-minute call with me: travischappell.com/chatVisit https://porkbun.com/BuildYourNetwork24 and get your .PRO domain for just $1 for the first year at Porkbun! Our Sponsors:* Check out PrizePicks and use my code TRAVIS for a great deal: www.prizepicks.com* Check out Quince: quince.com/travisAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Welcome to season four! To kick it off, we go to the not so distant past to a remarkable archeological find in Bosnia in 2019--a (probably) 14th century sword in the stone! From there, we travel back further into history to meet the inventor of the one of the most disruptive pieces of technology in at the turn of the 20th century--the diesel engine, created by Rudolf Diesel. While crossing the English Channel on an overnight ferry, Diesel disappeared. Was it suicide? Murder? Was the body found (yet not recovered) even his? The questions that swirled around the mysterious circumstances of his disappearance also fueled conspiracy theories that put two of the world's most powerful men as the culprits for his murder--John D. Rudolf Diesel was a game changing inventor, though his most famous product was not used how he envisioned it. Listen in and learn about his life and mysterious death.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As I was searching for other things, like the Luisiana Whistler, I came across several stories I just had to go into further. Things like what ever happened to Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the engine. How about Ireland's Vanishing Triangle. The Circleville Writer, and the Catman of Greenock. There are some strange things going on around us.
Yes, there was actually a guy named Rudolf Diesel who actually invented the diesel engine, which was incredibly revolutionary for its time. It earned Diesel a massive fortune and had huge implications for how war—especially maritime war in the early 1900's—would be waged. As European countries scrambled for dominance just prior to WWI, Diesel disappeared, leading to speculation that he was murdered by either Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II or by America's John D. Rockefeller whose young petroleum empire Diesel's motor threatened. Or maybe Diesel leapt to his own death. Or maybe...something else happened. Author Doug Brunt's new book 'The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I' tells the story of this incredible innovator and the impact his machine continues to have on the world. Doug Brunt grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Duke University. A former technology executive turned writer, his previous novels include 'Ghosts of Manhattan' (which is f-in great!), 'The Means', and 'Trophy Son'. He lives with his wife, journalist Megyn Kelly, in Connecticut. Check out Doug's website here.

Buck Sexton is joined by author and podcaster Doug Brunt to discuss his new book, "The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel," and his podcast that delves into literary discussions with notable writers. They react to the viral interview between Megyn Kelly and Bill Maher, where Kelly fact-checked Maher on Hillary Clinton's post-2016 election behavior. Kelly highlighted Clinton's questioning of Trump's legitimacy, a point Maher initially contested but conceded after Kelly presented specific quotes. Brunt praised Kelly's professionalism in handling the correction, while both speakers critiqued Maher's partial recognition of political realities and discussed the broader implications of ongoing legal battles on Trump's political prospects.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Released in 1980, Hangar 18 was arguably Hollywood's first UFO conspiracy movie. Its plot features many aspects of the real-life UFO enigma, including specific details from allegedly authentic top-secret UFO-related government documentation. But was it also a propaganda film for the Mormon church? (Mormons, Aliens, and Hangar 18) *** A struggling student is suddenly followed around campus by a strange man who has something very unusual to show him. (The Laughter of God) *** Rudolf Diesel is probably best known as the inventor of the engine which bears his name, but his puzzling and seemingly inexplicable disappearance on September 29, 1913 left behind a mystery nearly as enduring as the legacy of his engineering achievements. (Gone in the Night: The Extraordinary Life and Mysterious Disappearance of Rudolf Diesel) *** In 1960, the bodies of three women from the Chicago suburbs were discovered in Starved Rock State Park. The manhunt snared a confessed killer – and while he still remains in prison, he says he was framed. (The Starved Rock Murders) *** Author and Weird Darkness fan Patrick Hueller brings us an original story of fiction entitled, “2031: The Toys, They're Bleeding”. *** A young girl goes for a walk into the woods and suddenly finds she's not alone. (A Rather Strange Company) *** Though he was born into a Roman Catholic family, Adolfo Constanzo quickly fell into alternative religion, focusing on black magic and the occult…. but then he went even darker than that. (Catholic Boy, Drug Kingpin, Satanic Cult-Leader, and Serial Killer) *** In April 2007, a rash of sightings were reported of a strange creature prowling around the outskirts of Stafford, in the UK. Is it possible that there is finally evidence of werewolves in the 21st century? (Cannock Chase Werewolves) *** Hollywood has used the Greystone Mansion in numerous movies and TV shows… but would the actors be so comfortable filming there if they knew it's murderous and haunting history? (The Greystone Mansion Murders) *** Records indicate that the man known as the Comte de Saint Germain was born in the late 1600s/early 1700s, but reports by other well-known figures in history have told of a similar man that can be traced back to the time of Christ. This man was known by famous figures such as Casanova, Madame de Pampadour, Voltaire, King Louis XV, Catherine the Great, Anton Mesmer and many more. Douglas Brunt joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF RUDOLF DIESEL: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I, which was an instant New York Times bestseller. Apple Books has selected it as one of the 20 best books of 2023, and it already was named one of the Best History Books of the Year by Audible. Doug talks about the origin of the story, which came about as he bought an older boat, and how his fascination with the character of Rudolf Diesel sprang from there. Many know about Diesel fuel, but few are aware that it was named for the man who invented it, along with the first Diesel engine. Doug explains why he chose to include a wider view of what was going on in the world at the time, as well as theories about Diesel's fate. He goes on to present his thoughts on what really happened; to him, it was neither suicide nor murder. He also reveals his inspiration for his podcast, “Dedicated with Doug Brunt,” where he speaks with authors --- and shares cocktails. The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I by Douglas Brunt https://amzn.to/3QcSvVB INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The hidden history of one of the world's greatest inventors, a man who disrupted the status quo and then disappeared into thin air on the eve of World War I—this book answers the hundred-year-old mystery of what really became of Rudolf Diesel. September 29, 1913: the steamship Dresden is halfway between Belgium and England. On board is one of the most famous men in the world, Rudolf Diesel, whose new internal combustion engine is on the verge of revolutionizing global industry forever. But Diesel never arrives at his destination. He vanishes during the night and headlines around the world wonder if it was an accident, suicide, or murder. After rising from an impoverished European childhood, Diesel had become a multi-millionaire with his powerful engine that does not require expensive petroleum-based fuel. In doing so, he became not only an international celebrity but also the enemy of two extremely powerful men: Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil and the richest man in the world. The Kaiser wanted the engine to power a fleet of submarines that would finally allow him to challenge Great Britain's Royal Navy. But Diesel had intended for his engine to be used for the betterment of mankind and refused to keep the technology out of the hands of the British or any other nation. For John D. Rockefeller, the engine was nothing less than an existential threat to his vast and lucrative oil empire. As electric lighting began to replace kerosene lamps, Rockefeller's bottom line depended on the world's growing thirst for gasoline to power its automobiles and industries. At the outset of this new age of electricity and oil, Europe stood on the precipice of war. Rudolf Diesel grew increasingly concerned about Germany's rising nationalism and military spending. The inventor was on his way to London to establish a new company that would help Britain improve its failing submarine program when he disappeared. Now, New York Times bestselling author Douglas Brunt reopens the case and provides an astonishing new conclusion about Diesel's fate. “Equal parts Walter Isaacson and Sherlock Holmes, The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel yanks back the curtain on the greatest caper of the 20th century in this riveting history” (Jay Winik, New York Times bestselling author). About the author Until 2011, Douglas Brunt was CEO of Authentium, Inc. He now writes full time and lives in New York with his wife and three children. He is the author of New York Times Bestseller 'Ghosts of Manhattan' and 'The Means'. His third novel, 'Trophy Son', will be released May 30, 2017. You can lean more about Doug at www.douglasbrunt.com

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Saturday, Palestinian militants broke through barriers separating Gaza from Israel—raiding Israeli towns, killing nearly 1,000 civilians with another 150 civilians having been kidnapped by Hamas, according to estimates. President of Israel Isaac Herzog said of the attack, “not since the Holocaust have so many Jews been killed in one day.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that in response, Israel “will exact a price that will be remembered by [Hama], and Israel's other enemies, for decades to come.” 3:20pm- According to reporting from Summer Said, Benoit Faucon, and Stephen Kalin of The Wall Street Journal, “Iranian security officials helped plan Hamas's Saturday surprise attack on Israel and gave the green light for the assault at a meeting in Beirut last Monday, according to senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah, another Iran-backed militant group. Officers of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had worked with Hamas since August to devise the air, land and sea incursions.” You can read the full report here: https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/iran-israel-hamas-strike-planning-bbe07b25 3:30pm- During a press conference on Tuesday, the Biden Administration's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was asked about the $6 billion recently given to Iran in exchange for the release of several U.S. hostages. Sullivan denied that any of the money had been spent—however, isn't money fungible? Jim Geraghty writes: “the fact that if Iran knows it is going to get access to $6 billion in frozen funds for humanitarian spending, it can reallocate money that it was going to spend on those humanitarian costs to supporting Hamas and other terror groups.” Geraghty called on the Biden Administration to “refreeze” the billions provided to Iran. 3:45pm- While speaking at a rally in Waterloo, Iowa over the weekend, Republican candidate for president Donald Trump condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel and slammed the Biden Administration for providing billions of dollars to Iran—explaining that he would not be surprised if part of the “tremendous wealth they just accumulated” went towards acts of aggression against Israel. 3:55pm- During an appearance on Fox News, Senator Lindsey Graham proposed that in response to Hamas attacks on Israel, and reports that Iran helped plan the attacks, the United States should destroy oil fields in Iran and bring “the war to the Ayatollah's backyard.” 4:00pm- Dr. Victoria Coates— Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the horrific weekend attacks on Israel orchestrated by Hamas terrorists. Diesel isn't just a type of fuel. It is the name of a man who was at the center of one of the biggest stories of intrigue in the early 1900s. Rudolf Diesel was a German entrepreneur who author Douglas Brunt says was the "Elon Musk" of his day. In 1913, Brunt's body was found floating in the English Channel. Did he die naturally, did he commit suicide, or was he murdered? Some suspected the latter, given he seemed to have several natural enemies who formed as he invented the most important fuel in world history. Though the initial investigation was botched, Doug has reconstructed what happened and offers an authoritative theory of how Rudolf Diesel lost his life. Diesel fuel is used worldwide to power all kinds of heavy machinery, and had the world listened to him, and developed and honed alternative fuels to gasoline, history would have gone much differently.Douglas Brunt's website can be found at https://douglasbrunt-author.com/Information on his book from Atria Books can be found at https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Mysterious-Case-of-Rudolf-Diesel/Douglas-Brunt/9781982169909Brunt's podcast, "Dedicated" can be found at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dedicated-with-doug-brunt/id1650390838Support our show at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy** "Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistory https://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory
