But I have an ambitious drive that translated perfectly to sales and I also went back to school to study business. It was during one of my classes that my professor revealed handwritten notes have a high open-rate compared to other mediums. “Good things take time. It takes 10 years to become an overnight success. You have to be committed to your goals,” shares Rick Elmore, CEO at Simply Noted and retired NFL athlete. As a professional athlete, Rick learned a lot about what it takes to push hard and succeed. He quickly found that those skills transferred over to the corporate world when he decided to start his own robotic software and industrial automation business, Simply Noted. Today, Rick talks about how to unleash purposeful growth through determination, patience, mental toughness, and creative problem solving.  Rick explains that in order to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to embrace failing and be okay with being uncomfortable. Failure provides an opportunity for learning how to turn your weaknesses into strengths. Instead of shutting down when you do not magically reach success overnight, the most effective entrepreneurs are the ones who keep pushing their business forward, stay patient and focused on their goals, and pivot when they hit a bump in the road. Social media provides an easy temptation to compare your success to others, but it often does not show the full picture. Instead of worrying about what other entrepreneurs have that you do not, direct your focus back onto yourself and your own strengths.  Along the path to success, you will likely experience countless failures and with those failures, new opportunities for growth. By keeping your goals at the forefront of your mind, showing up consistently and never giving up even when times are tough, you will one day make it to the finish line.  Quotes: “You have to take your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.” (10:48-10:50 | Rick) “Everybody can think of what they don't have. But if you get stuck on that, it's going to prevent you from moving forward.” (13:12-13:19 | Rick)  “We use robots that we've built in house to automate and scale sending genuine handwritten notes.” (14:09-14:14 | Rick) “The open rate with a handwritten envelope is so high, it's like 99%.” (15:52-15:55 | Rick) “Good things take time. It takes 10 years to become an overnight success. You have to be committed to your goals.” (18:34-18:39 | Rick) “You have got to put yourself in uncomfortable positions to train your mind, because your mind is going to give up way before your body gives up.” (22:16-22:21 | Rick) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Learn More About Executive and Organization Development with Mike Horne   Learn more about Rick Elmore LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-elmore/ Website: https://simplynoted.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SimplyNoted1     Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Our special guest in this episode is Rick Elmore, who shares his incredible journey of going from scratch to success. Rick started out as an athlete and medical device salesperson with no business experience, but he was determined to make it work and develop a winning strategy. With hard work, grit, discipline and passion from his background in sports, he was able to stand out in the corporate world. He also used two useful analogies - climbing a mountain and Dave Ramsey's debt repayment analogy - to illustrate how he achieved success.Rick then talks about turning challenges into opportunities through technology. He was able to build a handwriting robot after finding help from knowledgeable people and testing out potential solutions. Rick also explains how he built a strong team by being flexible, having empathy and offering understanding. This episode is packed with wisdom that will certainly inspire any budding entrepreneur or anyone hoping to take their business career to the next level. Tune in now to hear Rick's story!Episode Highlights01:57 - I wouldn't say that I found Simply Noted. I felt like Simply Noted found me. I was in a marketing class and I had a professor going over the success rates in marketing and everything was super nominal, email, cold call, all the normal stuff. And then he ended the lecture saying, "Handwritten notes have a 99% open rate." I just thought that was such a believable stat because who doesn't open a handwritten note? So, I just thought it was a good business idea. There's a lot more in between and there's a lot more that came after, but that was really like the idea where the seed was planted. Handwritten notes can be a really good business idea if there's a cool, easy way to do it.04:40 - You got to be doing something you're passionate about, and I know that's kind of like the same advice everybody gives you. But that's why it was really easy for me to keep kind of pushing in those hard times. To develop that grit or to develop that discipline, you just got to wake up and do things, like even if you don't want to do it that day. You can start off by doing something simple, as easy as just making your bed every single morning and just not negotiating with yourself. You wake up and just do it. Even if you don't feel like it, you're doing a small win to start the day. 12:03 - There's a lot of free knowledge online, like how to book a meeting, how to run a meeting. Go to Google. Go to YouTube. I call myself relentless in the pursuit of knowledge. I come home and talk to my wife about something that I learned today and exhaust her. She's like, "You, literally, this is all you do, just trying to figure stuff out," but it's exciting. As you learn, like your tunnel vision goes from what you know, to what all the possibilities are. A lot of the same things that help you to be successful in sales, it's the same thing about being a leader. But the ultimate thing is really being empathetic. You're going to want things to be done on your timeline, especially when a lot of that pressure is mounting, but you just got to be understanding, be empathetic, understand things will happen as they happen, and really just try to keep people together. Because at the end of the day without everybody here, we couldn't do this. So, it's like I owe the success to everybody who's helped build this.Connect with ElzieLinkedInPowered By Podcast Town We Help B2B Brands grow their revenue through podcasting. He uses two analogies, one about a mountain-climbing journey and another from Dave Ramsey's debt-repayment approach, to explain how he achieved business success. He advises listeners to keep asking questions and to talk to people who have done what they want to do. He encourages consistency, hard work, and focusing on small wins to build momentum towards larger goals. To help listeners achieve their own goals, he recommends being helpful to those around them while having fun grinding towards their aspirations. Tune in to hear why you need to develop enthusiasm for what you are doing and keep that fire burning in order to reach your entrepreneurial goals. You will enjoy this episode for its actionable advice on how to overcome business obstacles and achieve success.Episode Highlights04:40 - There's a lot of free knowledge online, like how to book a meeting, how to run a meeting. Tune in now and learn how a simple idea can lead to a successful business venture.Episode Highlights01:17 - I wouldn't say that I found Simply Noted. Handwritten notes can be a really good business idea if there's a cool, easy way to do it.Connect with ElzieLinkedInPowered By Podcast Town We Help B2B Brands grow their revenue through podcasting. Rick discusses the benefits of sending handwritten notes, both in terms of building relationships and increasing customer loyalty and how Simply Noted can help businesses grow authentically. Episode Highlights: Rick explains that Simply Noted is a platform that uses handwriting robots to send personalized and customized handwritten thank you notes, birthday cards, and anniversary cards to help companies, agencies, and entrepreneurs build relationships and loyalty. (0:53) Rick shares how he came up with the concept of Simply Noted, and how he was able to sell $280,000 from his first campaign. (2:15) Rick believes that handwritten notes are more valuable than ever in today's AI-driven world and can help businesses grow authentically through strong relationships with customers. (6:36) Rick mentions that he builds strong relationships with his clients to attract and retain them, rather than just competing on price. (9:39) Rick explains that it's important to have a long-term mindset and obsess about every client's experience to set yourself apart from the competition who often have a "grass is greener" mentality. (16:06) Rick explains that it's easy to work with their software and they can integrate with Zapier, Integrately, or API. (18:54) Rick shares that they can create a custom handwriting style for a fee, which takes into account things like the spacing and ligatures in the individual's handwriting. (21:39) Rick mentions that they can control the viscosity of the ink, which results in a nice smear effect when one touches the ink with their thumb, making it clear that the note was not printed. (25:00) Rick shares that other industries like home services and politicians are getting creative with using handwritten notes to get signatures and donations. (28:24) Rick discusses the value of handwritten notes and how Simply Noted brings personal touch into the digital and AI revolution. (33:34) Tweetable Quotes: “We help companies, agencies, entrepreneurs, basically anybody in business, help to integrate, automate, and scale building relationships and loyalty within their business. And the way that we do that is with our handwriting robots that we built here in house.” - Rick Elmore “I focus so hard on establishing the strongest relationships and connections with my best clients because I knew for someone else to come in, it's going to have to be way more than just a better product.” - Rick Elmore “We've married technology with an old school practice. We're trying to make it as easy as sending an email like if you it really is, I mean if you've really tried it, once you do it once or twice like it really is as easy as sending an email. So we're just trying to, you know, bring that personal touch into the digital and AI revolution. Because it's more, we really believe it's more valuable than ever.” - Rick Elmore Resources Mentioned: Rick Elmore LinkedIn Simply Noted David Carothers Kyle Houck Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes

Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Elizabeth Kostova, “It's funny; in this era of email and voice mail and all those things that even I did not grow up with, a plain old paper letter takes on amazing intimacy.  It's funny when I teach my clients about sales and I share how we didn't have computers or calendar systems.  We used the old-fashioned paper and pen for note taking, a paper calendar, and my favorite, a tickler or follow-up system that used notes on index cards that I placed in pendaflex files of January – December and 1-31 Days.   On the flip side, this handwritten framework allowed me to become very personal, very quickly with my prospect and clients, because handwritten notes and follow-up letters helped me stand out because I could personalize every correspondence! So are you thinking, what the heck is she talking about?  Handwritten correspondence in our digital world?    YouTube: https://youtu.be/vSVh5HU-YqA   About Rick Elmore:   Rick is an entrepreneur, sales, and marketing expert, and former college and professional football athlete.
