The Tom Petty Project

In the liner notes for Wildflowers and all the Rest, engineer Jim Scott remarks that “Tom would write a song like ‘Honey Bee' on the spot and the band would just follow him. There are dozens of recordings just starting a song and making it up from top to bottom, coming up with funny lyrics.” Of course, there are plenty of deep cut or inside examples of this that are well known to the hard core fans, such as Juju Beads and the more widely loved Girl on LSD, but immediately Honey Bee is different. Whereas those songs are all about the playfully silly lyrics, Honey Bee also has a propulsive, irresistible groove to go along with it. Today's guest conversation is the most special one I've done so far. I've spoken to some fantastic musicians for this show and I've spoken to two men who have written seminal first hand accounts of Tom's life and work. I've chatted with musicians and fans and have enjoyed every minute of it. But today, I'm chatting to one of the people I love most in the whole world, my youngest daughter Emma. When I asked her if she wanted to be one of my guests for this season, she agreed a little tentatively, but when I asked her to pick a song from the album, her answer was immediate. So we'll dive into Honey Bee as well as where our musical tastes overlap as well as diverge. This was a wonderful conversation to have, so sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation with my wonderful daughter, Emma Brown. To listen to the song, check out the official lyric video here: https://youtu.be/tbyB10JSOHkAnd to listen to the alternate version on the Finding Wildflowers release, go here: https://youtu.be/JWPsB-KAXB4Please note: There is one use of the work f*** in this episode, used as a direct quote.Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectAll music other than the piano version of Wildflowers, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Welcoming Emma Brown, CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award, to Purposely, where she shares her organisation's mission and her career journey, from public relations executive to non-profit leader. Emma shares details of her recent cancer diagnosis, how she coped with the news, and how she has navigated work while leading an organisation and receiving treatment. Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Emma moved to the UK in 2007. Marrying a Brit, they had three boys and settled into London life. In the first decade in London, Emma put her PR skills to work for several top brands, including Debenhams, Weight Watchers, Heineken, and others. In 2017, Emma swapped the corporate world for a role focused on purpose. Partly inspired by her children, she joined The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation as their Head of Communications, later being promoted to Director of Brand and Communication. The Foundation is an international charity supporting young people to find their purpose, place, and passion in the world. The accredited program is active in more than 120 countries, available to all 14 to 24-year-olds with the aim of being inclusive of all backgrounds, locations, cultures, and abilities. The aim is that each young person becomes part of something special while developing their individual interests, skills, and helping them to reach their potential and realize their dreams. Founded in 1956, the Award highlights the value of Non-Formal Education and Learning. Today, there are consistently over a million young people taking on the Award's challenge to believe in the power of their potential, make a difference in their community, and take control of their future. In New Zealand, the International Award was launched in 1963, later rebranded as The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award, reflecting the impact Sir Edmund Hillary had on the Award in New Zealand. Locally, as it is globally, the focus is on helping young people to develop a skill, get physically active, give back to their communities, and take part in an adventure. The Award challenges young people to leave their comfort zones. Emma has the unique position of having been involved in the Award in both the UK and New Zealand, although she quietly confesses to having started the Award herself as a young person but not completing it. She is passionate about the work they do and the difference they try to make in young lives. Emma points out that they are essentially an education framework that relies on their partner organisations to provide the Award's participants with a quality experience, one that is going to help add value and, in some cases, transform lives. Emma also talks about the uniqueness of the New Zealand Award, particularly in their commitment to biculturalism and upholding the mana of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Leading the Award in her country is a huge privilege for Emma, and her passion for the organisation she leads and her team is palpable. Despite all she has been through since taking on her first CEO role — moving countries, starting afresh in a new city, settling children in schools and buying a house, organising a Royal visit, dealing with breast cancer treatment — Emma is resilient and full of energy, and excited about the future of her organisation and the work they do to help young people reach their full potential and realise their dreams. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

For Emma Brown, it was as though she had just removed the sword from the fabled stone, a moment that would challenge the inclination to persistently question her own judgment when it came to business. As is often the case, Brown's moment of insight occurred in a high-pressure situation. Faced with poor financial visibility and the need to prevent a liquidity crisis, she championed the notion that her company's finance team take a radical approach. Stripping everything back to basics, she delved into the fundamental aspects of cash flow, bank statements, and working capital. This back-to-basics exercise revealed that the complexity of the business—large ERP systems, convoluted reporting, and complicated forecasting structures—was hindering understanding as well as impeding effective decision-making. Brown's strategic approach of simplifying complexity significantly boosted her confidence in navigating challenging situations within her career. The realization that complexity might indicate inherent issues within processes, systems, or structures shifted her perspective, empowering her to tackle problems with a newfound confidence. –Jack Sweeney

Over the last couple of months, the provincial governments in both New Brunswick and Saskatchewan have made controversial changes to their LGBTQ+ policies at schools. Parental consent is now needed when a student under 16 wants to use a different name or pronoun in the classroom. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has also been saying that schools should leave conversations about LGBTQ issues to parents. This is all happening at a time when the concept of “parental rights” is a top issue for U.S Republicans. A parental rights bill was passed in the Republican-held House earlier this year and more than two dozen statehouses have passed similar legislation. This week: we talk to Emma Brown of Just Stop Oil about why the group targeted Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers in the National Gallery, London, for its climate emergency protest. Stacy Boldrick, assistant professor of museum studies at the University of Leicester, discusses the climate protests in the context of the long history of iconoclasm and attacks on works of art. The first version of Paris+, Art Basel's fair in the French capital, opened this week, and we ask Melanie Gerlis, a columnist for the Financial Times and The Art Newspaper, how it compares to Paris's previous fair, Fiac, and to the Frieze fairs in London last week. And this episode's Work of the Week is Frank Bowling's Suncrush (1976), which features in an exhibition of the Guyana-born artist's work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Reto Thüring, the curator of the show, tells us about the painting and Bowling's 10-year stay in America in the 1960s and 1970s.Links:juststopoil.orgStacy Boldrick, Iconoclasm and the Museum, Routledge, 212pp, £27.99, $35.96 (pb)Paris+, until 23 October.Melanie Gerlis, The Art Fair Story: a Rollercoaster Ride, Lund Humphries, 104pp, £19.99, $34.99 (hb)Frank Bowling's Americas, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 22 October-9 April 2023; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 13 May-10 September next year. When Just Stop Oil threw soup at a Van Gogh painting, there was outrage across social media - including from people who considered themselves naturally sympathetic to their cause. So I wanted to find out the truth: as it turns out, the soup was thrown over glass - no painting was harmed in the making of this protest - and Emma Brown from the group joins me, asking what should we really be angry about - soup over a glass, or the destruction of our planet. But was this tactic helpful or counterproductive - and how does she answer their critics? This is the only media outlet where you'll find a fair platform for the group, which we're glad to provide. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Looking back on a 20-year real estate career, Sydney auctioneer Emma Brown-Garrett has two key pieces of advice: have the patience to find your niche and seek out someone who will mentor and believe in you. Emma notes it wasn't until both these elements fell into place that she found her true calling as a highly successful female auctioneer. And it took her a lot of false starts, a whole host of perseverance and a near exit from the industry to get where she is today. Now two decades into a career that initially appealed for its glamour and excitement, Emma has truly found her feet as an auctioneer at Menck White who also thrives on the challenge of auction competitions. In this Courageous Conversation with Leanne Pilkington, Emma shares her real estate journey, including why she feels her real estate career has just begun, and how she persevered to get where she is today. She discusses what success looks like and why it's deeply personal, the achievements she's most proud of, and how she balances a career with family life. Emma also looks at the importance of finding a good mentor, and how her mentor took her career to the next level by identifying a skillset she never knew she had. She offers an insight into the relentless commitment to training which keeps her at the top of her game, shares some thoughts on female leadership in the industry, and offers some key tips for young agents starting out who may not yet know where their destiny lies. In the process, Emma discusses the work/life balance that comes with raising a family and why it's okay to have goals and aspirations that extend beyond the role of motherhood. She also offers some sage advice on why success is something you find when you least expect it, and how it's important to believe in yourself, back your ambition and have the patience to know if you work hard, train hard, and surround yourself with the right people, your time will come. “I've just started my career and this is something that I wish someone had told me when I was younger. If they'd said to me that at 44-years-old you'll be starting your career. Everything else leading up to it is steps and they're chapters in your book that lead you this amazing chapter. But I cannot believe that I'm now really embarking on my true career.” - Emma Brown-Garrett https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88iYgjwD5eA Emma and Leanne also discuss: How Emma came into real estate, and why it took tenacity, perseverance and a jar of Keen's Mustard to get a foot in the door of real estate sales. Why her career faltered on numerous occasions, and included sales and property management before she realised auctioneering might just be her true calling. How Emma's previous experience as a sales agent is one of her greatest auctioneering strengths. Why she almost exited the industry and how a chance phone call from someone who believed in her turned it all around. How competitive auctioneering helps Emma hone her craft, and why she would love to see more women join her in the competition space. Why getting into auctioneering proved a chicken and egg scenario where you need the experience to get the job and the job to get the experience, and how Emma overcame this. How Emma juggles a career with a young family and why she believes it's important her children see her ambition and success. What Emma is most proud of in a lengthy real estate career and what she would tell her younger self about the definition of success.Emma's advice to younger agents starting out in the industry and why there's a niche for everyone. Why she now feels more connected to the real estate industry than ever before and how it revolved around the realisation she has finally found her place. And much, much more… Leanne Pilkington will be on hand at Elite Retreat from 31 July to 3 August, helping attendees create memorable mission statements and marketing that allow them to find their point of difference and stand out from t...

For the season three finale, a Reading Aloud first! Adam actually "reads aloud" an excerpt from the book "To Raise A Boy" by Emma Brown. The couple deep dives into what it means to raise a boy in todays society. Brown describes the "boy" box as having thick walls, a firmly engrained idea of what it means to be a male and highlights that in today's world girls have thinner walls and many examples of different ways to be a girl or woman. Adam and Marisol discuss their personal experiences with parenting a boy in todays world and how their own internalized patriarchy has shown up in moments. Is it time to let the walls down in the boy box or is it time to continue to push forward on the path to female equality? Can they both be done at the same time? Should they? In this episode, Reading Aloud also announces that they have launched a Patreon! What is Pateron you ask? Lemma (pronounced L in front, “Emma”) Brown is a Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Expert with over ten years of clinical nutrition and nutrition counseling experience. She has also lived with Type 1 Diabetes for over 15 years. When she started planning for pregnancy a few years ago, Lemma was shocked with how little information and resources were available to support her and help other women like her manage Type 1 Diabetes during pregnancy. From her own first-hand experience, Lemma realized that she wanted to become a coach and resource for other women with Type 1 Diabetes entering motherhood to empower them to manage their blood sugars to support a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. She sees clients 1:1 virtually who have Type 1 Diabetes and are planning for pregnancy, are currently pregnant, and who have recently had a baby. Lemma currently lives in Harrisonburg, Virginia with her husband and two-year-old daughter. Leslee Flannery is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Lactation Counselor from Dayton, Ohio. She has spent the last 6 years working with the pre and postnatal population. Leslee herself has two young boys and understands first-hand how overwhelming this new phase of life can be for women. She thought she had found her dream job working in a Maternal Fetal Medicine office but soon realized there was an abundance of nutrition misinformation and a lack of continued support with gestational diabetes so she started her own private practice. In her private practice, Leslee teaches her clients that all foods can fit while controlling blood sugars in pregnancy!
