In this week's episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, host Adam Green is joined by Tim Schneider, founder of The Gray Market, to explore his much-anticipated annual art market predictions. Known for his sharp insights and bold forecasts, Tim shares highlights from his newly published 2025 predictions, diving into topics that are shaping the art world. Together, they discuss the potential sale of Frieze to Ari Emanuel, the possibility of Beeple's Everydays: The First 5000 Days returning to the market, and the growing presence of high-end gallery pop-ups in Saudi Arabia. Tim also addresses the unsettling rise of deepfake technology and its implications for the art market. In addition, Tim reveals a brand-new prediction exclusively for this episode and reflects on his recent transition of The Gray Market to Substack.
In this episode of 92NY Talks, join Mike Winkelmann, A.K.A. Beeple, the creator of Everydays: The First 5000 Days, the purely digital artwork that sold at Christie's for nearly $70 million in 2021. He sits down with investor and collector Glenn Fuhrman for a fascinating discussion on how digital tools, NFTs, the blockchain and crypto are influencing the way art is created — and sold. The conversation was recorded on May 4, 2022 in front of a live audience at The 92nd Street Y, New York.
2022. 05. 21. First coined in Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel “Snow Crash,” the metaverse is more or less defined as a virtual world (or worlds), reminiscent of games and films like "Ready Player One," Roblox and Fortnite. Inside this space, people can live vicariously through their avatars by trading and maintaining digital assets that center around a fully functioning real-world economy. What are NFTs? NFT Market Surpassed $40 Billion in 2021, New Estimate Shows. “Everydays: The First 5,000 Days,” sold for a staggering $69.3 million. That price made Beeple the third-most valuable living artist at auction after Jeff Koons and David Hockney.NFT Queen Asia, also known as Hanis Harmiles, a Metaverse Advocate and NFT Strategist is here to empower and educate everyone about the importance of Web3. A market in which the assets coveted by investors for use as profile pictures or digital avatars are branded as Crypto-Punks, members of the Bored Ape Yacht or Kennel Club, or as Pudgy Penguins, is redolent of the Pokemon card craze of the 1990s. As it happens, the popularity of these Non-Fungible Token (NFT) collections with gameified nomenclatures has sparked a rediscovery of Pokemon cards, which are enjoying a nostalgia boom. That incidental side-impact is not a surprising one, because the scale of the NFT market is increasingly hard to ignore. In 2021 investors sank at least US$44.2 billion into NFTs, according to Chainalysis. Transaction volumes, total value invested and average transaction size all rose sharply by comparison with 2020. The blockchain data platform bases its estimate on the amount of crypto-currency sent to the ERC-721 and ERC-1155 contracts, the two types of Ethereum smart contract associated with NFT marketplaces and collections.NFT marketplaces offer art, collectibles, videos, music and sportsThe fact that most NFTs are built on Ethereum is a major factor behind the surging transaction costs (“gas fees”) on Ethereum, and the associated interest in the low-to-zero transaction cost alternative of the Solana blockchain protocol. Most of the purchases made are intermediated by a newish breed of commission-based NFT marketplaces of which the biggest, OpenSea, is also built on Ethereum. The NFT marketplaces are akin to crypto-currency exchanges such as Coinbase but minus the custody function (unlike the crypto-currency exchanges, most NFT marketplaces expect investors to own and operate their own digital wallet) and plus (in the case of the most successful NFT marketplaces) a genuinely decentralised model. OpenSea, which currently lists more than 6,000 NFT collections, is the generalist option. Other NFT marketplaces (such as art marketplace Nifty Gateway, which is owned by cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, a parentage that enables provision of a custody service) focus on niches. The NFTs available are not confined to unique digital collectibles such as Bored Apes (there are only 10,000 available) or Pudgy Penguins (8,888). Fine art, videos, music and physical objects are also available as NFTs. Artist Damien Hirst has sold 9,000 of 10,000 unique, hand-painted, dot-covered works on paper at a price of US$2,000 each. He has given buyers 12 months to decide if they wish to take ownership of the physical work or own the NFT instead. If they choose the NFT, the physical work will be destroyed. Secondary market trades have raised the total market value of the Hirst collection to more than US$500 million. The traditional art auctioneers, whose nose for anything that smells of money is as finely tuned as the most shameless investment bank, have moved into the market. Christie's made US$150 million from NFT sales in 2021 (US$69.3 million of it from Everydays: The First 5,000 Days, a digital art collage by artist Mike Winklelmann, better known as Beeple). Sotheby's made US$100 million from NFT sales in 2021, including from sales of Bored Apes.Among the topics to be discussed at this webinar are:Who invented NFTs?What explains the recent growth of the NFT markets? How can NFTs best be categorised? What are the sources of value of an NFT?What are the links between blockchain, crypto-currencies, tokenisation and DeFI?Find out more at: https://futureoffinance.biz/2022/02/02/the-good-reasons-and-the-bad-for-taking-nfts-seriously/ Hosted on Acast. Last year was one of the hottest years on record for the planet; it was also the hottest year for NFTs or non-fungible tokens. A digital artwork titled “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” by digital artist Mike Winkelmann, also known as Beeple, sold for $69 million at Christie's. It was the first NFT that an internationally renowned auction house had ever sold and that single sale produced 8.7 MWh of energy. 2022 was another big year in the art scene. Gallery openings got canceled, digital viewings had to continue to suffice, and NFT's exploded on to the market. It was really Beeple's collage work, Everydays: The First 5000 Days, sold via Christie's for $69 US million that got everyone stirred up. That was March. Since then, the NFT/crypto market has been a rollercoaster ride. And I'll be honest, it still seems like something pretty foreign to me and probably a lot of artists I know and have spoken to. However, Saatchi Art are looking to change that. My last guest of the season is Monty Preston. Monty is a manager of Art Advisory and Curation at Saatchi Art. Monty is part of a team working with artists and collectors to help them make the leap into the NFT space. Just a few months ago, most of us had never heard of an NFT. Even once we figured out what they were, it seemed like maybe they'd be a short-lived fad, a distraction for the tech-savvy to funnel money into as the pandemic dragged on. But it seems NFTs are here to stay. The internet has exploded with digital artwork that's being bought and sold like crazy; in the third quarter of this year, trading volume of NFTs hit $10.67 billion, a more than 700-percent increase from the second quarter. Last month, both Coinbase and Sotheby's announced plans to launch NFT marketplaces. As a quick refresher in case you, like me, still don't totally get it: NFT stands for non-fungible token, and it's a digital certificate that represents ownership of a digital asset. The certificates are one-of-a-kind (that's the non-fungible part), are verified by and stored on a blockchain, and allow digital assets to be transferred or sold. Depending who you ask, NFTs were a thing as early as 2013 or 2014—but they didn't really hit headlines until earlier this year, when artists like Grimes and Beeple sold their digital creations for millions of dollars. Soon everyone from Jack Dorsey to George Church to the NBA started jumping on the NFT bandwagon. And you've probably heard about the bizarre phenomenon that is the Bored Ape Yacht Club. This is just the beginning of an ever-growing list of artists, celebrities, crypto-enthusiasts, and others who are betting NFTs are the future of collectible art. Re-enter Beeple, the American artist (whose given name is Mike Winkelmann) whose collage of 5,000 pieces of digital art, titled Everydays: The First 5000 Days, sold for $69 million in a Christie's auction in March. Another piece of his sold this week, and though it went for less than half what Everydays did, it's bringing a whole new twist to the NFT art world. The new work, titled Human One, is a life-sized 3D video sculpture, and Winkelmann called it “the first portrait of a human born in the metaverse.” It shows a person in silver clothing and boots, wearing a backpack and a helmet (which is something of a cross between that of an astronaut and a motorcyclist) trekking purposefully across a changing landscape. It was purchased for $29 million at Christie's 21st Century Evening Sale on Tuesday by Ryan Zurrer, a Swiss venture capitalist. introducing HUMAN ONE beeple (@beeple) October 28, 2021 The piece is a box whose four walls are video screens, with a computer at its base. It's over seven feet tall and can be viewed from any angle. But its key feature is the fact that it will be continuously updated, supposedly for the rest of Winkelmann's life. “I want to make something that people can continue to come back to and find new meaning in. And the meaning will continue to evolve,” he said. “That to me is super-exciting. It feels like I now have this whole other canvas.” The artist plans to change the imagery that appears in the box regularly. It will be sort of like having one of those digital photo frames, except instead of family and friends on a small, flat screen, who-knows-what will appear in 3D and larger than life. If some of the images in Everydays are any indication, Zurrer may end up seeing some pretty striking political commentary in his living room, or office, or wherever he chooses to keep Human One. “You could come downstairs in the morning and the piece looks one way,” Winkelmann said. “Then you come home from work, and it looks another way.” However, he won't be changing the piece according to any sort of schedule, but rather as the fancy strikes him—and, he noted, in response to current events. If Zurrer chooses to keep the piece in his home or another private location, that would establish a sort of artistic intimacy between him and Winkelmann, with Zurrer being privy to the artist's ideas and creativity in real time. Though Human One was doubtless an expensive and highly complex project, it's likely just the beginning of a whole new type of “l...
Den digitale kunstner Beeple satte tilbage i marts sit værk “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” til salg. This past March, he cemented his place 'among the top three most valuable living artists' after his collage of JPEGs, 'Everydays: The First 5000 Days,' sold as a non-fungible token (NFT) at Christie's auction house for $69 million. Before this sale, he typically sold prints for an average of $100 each. Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs as they are known, have been around since 2017. But they suddenly went mainstream this year, attracting the attention of both crypto-currency traders and general investors. The sale of a tokenised digital art work titled ‘Everydays – The First 5000 Days' by an artist called Beeple, for $69 million, appears to have unleashed an ‘NFT bubble', with some analysts comparing to the ‘Tulip bubble' of the 17th century. Are NFTs primarily a digital art-related phenomenon – a way to trade digital art and other digital collectibles? Or will they have a wider impact in the offline world as well, extending to domains such as music, fintech, and real estate? We demystify NFTs in this episode of In Focus with Dr Merav Ozair. Dr Ozair is a FinTech Faculty member at Rutgers Business School. She is a data scientist, a quant strategist, and a Crypto/Blockchain expert.

Aperte o play!
On March 11, the digital artist Beeple sold his “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” collage in a Christie's online auction for $69.3 million. Its buyer didn't receive anything to display on a wall. Instead he received a NFT, a “non-fungible token.” NFTs are essentially a certificate of ownership, recorded on the blockchain, for a digital asset that is seemingly just a Google search away for the rest of us. On today's Brainstorm, hosts Michal Lev-Ram and Brian O'Keefe probe the profitable, perplexing world of NFTs with the help of Fortune's Robert Hackett. He explains how NFTs create scarcity in the infinite digital environment of the internet. Noah Davis, a specialist in Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie's, recounts the beguiling auction for Beeple's work, and describes what's in store for the future of NFT art. Finally, Caty Tedman, the Head of Partnerships at Dapper Labs discusses the company's collaboration on NBA Top Shot, a digital sports collectibles marketplace which has seen sky-rocketing growth since its launch only five months ago.
Det har titlen "Everydays: The First 5000 days”.

The audio version of the ArtsUndone Blog. erin-schwartz.com Recently, Christie's auction house sold a piece of digital artwork by Beeple (Mike Winkelmann) for over $69 million. The interesting thing about the work, entitled EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS, beyond its aesthetic and mode of production, for me, is that the item sold is not a physical manifestation of the piece, nor is it “merely” a high-resolution digital file. The work was an NFT, or Non-Fungible Token. What are the ramifications of this on the art market and future of art production? In this article, the host, Dr. Erin Schwartz addresses issues of commodity and authenticity in light of news ways of trading art.
Hey everyone!Literally a couple of minutes ago this work of art by Beeple just sold for $69,346,250.Yes, SIXTY NINE MILLION DOLLARS.Don’t believe me? Here’s the link to the auction -> https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/beeple-first-5000-days/beeple-b-1981-1/112924Admittedly, the artwork is incredible. Here’s the description straight from Christies auction house…In May 2007, the digital artist known as Beeple set out to create and post a new work of art online every day. He hasn’t missed a day since, creating a new digital picture every day for 5,000 days straight. Individually known as EVERYDAYS, collectively, the pieces form the core of EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS, one of the most unique bodies of work to emerge in the history of digital art. That’s pretty amazing, a work of art that quite literally took 14+ years to create… some of the detail in them is absolutely bonkers as well. And it get’s crazier, still. This work is sold as an NFT. For those that haven’t seen the NFT craze stirring the internet, an NFT stands for NON FUNGIBLE TOKEN. Whatever that means, right?Basically it utilizes BLOCKCHAIN technology, similar technology that underpins BITCOIN, to VERIFY and assign OWNERSHIP to digital goods. Here’s what Christies said about this particular 69 million dollar NFT…The recent introduction of Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain technology has enabled collectors and artists alike to verify the rightful owner and authenticity of digital artworks. EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS will be delivered directly from Beeple to the buyer, accompanied by a unique NFT encrypted with the artist’s unforgeable signature and uniquely identified on the blockchain. MakersPlace, a digital marketplace, has issued the NFT for the piece. So, the question of the day is, would you pay $69,346,250 for a piece of art that ONLY exists in the digital world?Obviously I’m sure they will send the buyer a PRINT of the artwork, but again, this might make your head hurt….Anyone can get a PRINT of it….Even crazier..The PRINT, HANGING IN THE OWNER’S HOUSE, isn’t the ORIGINAL!The original ONLY exists online, on the blockchain. Just like the Mona Lisa ORIGINAL only exists in the Louvre in Paris…I know, trust me, this hurts my brain too. Here is what I’m taking away from it.1) New technology will ALWAYS warp your brain. Just like cars warped horse Owner’s brains back in the day, this is warping my brain right now. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT WON’T BE THE STANDARD AND LAUGHABLE THAT WE FOUND IT CONFUSING.2) Scarcity is quite literally FLYING OFF THE SHELVES. Anything that is scarce.BitcoinSmall BusinessesReal Estateand, yes, 69 million dollar digital artIf you aren’t invested in scarce ASSETS you are going to get crushed and I honestly feel bad for anyone who doesn’t know this information. 3) Just because you think it’s dumb doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable. I’ve heard so many intellectually lazy people call new technology “dumb” or a “fad” or a “scam” that if I had a dollar for every time they’ve said it… I’d be a bazillionaire. It isn’t dumb. The next 10 years and the rest of this century for that matter, will be DEFINED by crazy technologies like this that by definition will seem CRAZY to us and NORMAL within a few years. That’s just how it works. If you plan on being alive for the next decade you should probably just remove the word “dumb” from your vocabulary and start trying to understand what REALLY drives value in this day and age. Anyway, that’s what I’ve got for today, what do you guys think about Beeple?Crap? Amazing? Worth the money?Let me know in the comments and share this with someone if you want to blow their mind today.69,346,250. Wow.
