When we see and acknowledge what is going well, we begin to permanently change what our mind not only looks for but believes is possible. And when we change our mindset, we change the potential of possibilities that cross our path. Which leads me to celebrating. Perhaps hearing that celebrating is a necessary part of the journey of success may come across as frivolous or unnecessary. Or perhaps when you envision celebrating, the thought of a large party of people and dancing and drinking just does not appeal to you, so you aren't someone who thinks celebrating is necessary (first off all, I am with you on that last one - I don't need a big shindig either), but celebrating can appear in many different forms. So long as it is a form that allows you to decompress, rest, and rejuvenate as well as extend gratitude to those who helped you arrive where you are, that is what celebrating is, and today, I would like to share with you how celebrating after each victory, no matter how small or big, is vital to future successes. Let's take a look at the importance of gratitude and celebration in our everyday lives. View the Show Notes for the episode here - https://thesimplyluxuriouslife.com/podcast389

Prevention versus correction. For a few decades now, or perhaps more than a few, stress management has been the term of phrase often used as we find a culture, and more specifically, ourselves nearing or reaching burn-out whether in our jobs or life in general, and while bringing healing and remedy to something in our lives that needs our attention for improvement is certainly valuable and a necessary skill to learn should we find ourselves in this state of fatigue and chronic stress, preventing such a state from ever being reached is a far more beneficial approach, and gives us much more enjoyment and yep, contentment for a far longer time throughout our life journey. Similarly to stress management is time management, a term of phrase again that is used often but actually brings our attention to the wrong place. Living simply luxuriously is a drilling down and investing in quality over quantity, and this includes how we go about our days. Time management shares directives on how to squeeze more into the day, but energy management teaches us how to thrive throughout our entire day, something the former doesn't prioritize although it does keep it in the equation. And here's the important detail to keep in mind, energy management is going to be unique to each of us because we are each unique individuals traveling during different periods of our life journey, experiencing different chapters of our life, so to focus on time management is to focus on a logical, concrete approach, but we are not stoic, robotic individuals. We have ups and downs in our moods, our physical abilities, our mental strength for focus, will-power, etc., and that is why shifting to energy management will actually solve the issues that stress management and time management are trying to address, but also ensure you are honored for the individual that you are. Let's take a look at six habits to consider when managing your energy well through the day in order for you to thrive, enjoying each day even attending to tasks that are have-tos.
Mike Winkelmann, AKA Beeple, is a legendary digital artist, graphic designer, and animator known for selling NFTs. Beeple made history in 2020 with a sale at Christie's of his multi-year long project known as Everydays, for an eye popping 69 million dollars. Following that, he started selling his NFTs on Nifty Gateway and amassed a huge following of fans and a hardcore group of holders. Earlier this year, Beeple opened a 50,000 square foot digital art studio, experiential space, and museum of his body of work, located in his hometown of Charleston, SC. He has become a central figure in the ever-evolving digital art and crypto art movement. Beeple engages with millions of people on Twitter and Instagram daily, as he continues to produce a completed artwork every single day. Here is an interview I did with Beeple at his studio in Charleston, and below is a link to his website.

Just around one year ago, two literary bros from Miami decided to launch a business venture. It was a couple weeks after Beeple's Everydays had sold for $69 million at Christie's and NFTs were taking the art world by storm. Still, few could have guessed at the time that their little company, called Yuga Labs, would produce a series of cartoon apes that would become some of the most successful—and divisive—characters in the entire NFT universe. "It's hard to justify that a Bored Ape NFT is worth $300,000 based on the art... they're cartoon apes" says crypto journalist Amy Castor. "They're cute, you know, but is it worth that kind of money?" For many regular people, and a whole host of celebrities, the answer is yes. Today, Yuga Labs has more than 60 employees and more than $2 billion in total sales. Over the past few weeks, it has gone on a tear announcing new initiatives, from the acquisition of CryptoPunks and Meebits, arguably the two other most popular NFT series, to the launch of Apecoin, its own brand of cryptocurrency. Larva Labs now hopes to create what is essentially a Marvel universe from all this intellectual property—and make a lot of money along the way. But Castor, for one, says that Yuga Labs's recent acquisitions are antithetical to the core tenets that NFT evangelists tout. "The whole idea about NFTs is that they're supposed to be decentralized. It's not supposed to be one outfit having control of the top three most expensive NFT projects" she says. "They've created a perceived value out of thin air so that they can then monetize that brand." Its strategy shows us what the future of the NFT space might look like. But it remains unclear whether this future will benefit everyday NFT collectors and enthusiasts as much as the big investors and founders of companies like Yuga Labs. To unpack the wild and winding story of Yuga Labs and the Bored Ape Yacht Club, executive editor Julia Halperin spoke with Amy Castor, who chronicled the rise of this phenomenon on Artnet News.
„Everydays: the First 5000 Days” – so heißt die digitale Collage des Künstlers Beeple, die im vergangenen Jahr für unglaubliche 69 Millionen US-Dollar versteigert wurde. Wie sich der Hype um Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) seitdem entwickelt hat und was er für die Zukunft des digitalen Kunstmarktes bedeutet, besprechen Miriam Meckel & Dirk Boll, Vorstand beim Auktionshaus Christie's, in dieser Folge.
On March 11, 2021, artist Beeple's NFT "Everydays: the First 5000 Days" sold at Christie's for $69 million. The sale shattered both art world expectations and auction records, and in the one year since, the "traditional" art world and the NFT world have become more intertwined than anyone could have predicted. We reflected on one year since THE Beeple sale with Artnet News Art Business Editor Tim Schneider, one of the leading experts writing about the intersection of the art market and the crypto world. Tim breaks down his own experience covering crypto over the last 5 years, how his perspective on NFTs have changed, and gives his take on where the market might be headed next. We also discuss his recent study of NFT platform Foundation (you can read it here), where he breaks down 5 major takeaways that provide some of the very first insights into the impact of NFT sales on artists. Be sure to follow Tim on Twitter (@the_gray_market), Instagram (@the_graymarket), and keep up with his work on Artnet News. Vocab words: Beeple, Pak, Crypto Kitties

Mike Winkelmann has been creating digital art for over two decades. He's 40 years old, lives in South Carolina, and has a computer science degree from Purdue. But this isn't a show about Mike Winkelmann. This is a show about Beeple, the name by which Winkelmann is best known, the name that took the art world by storm in 2021 when an NFT of his nearly 15-year project, EVERYDAYS, sold for a record $69.3 million. Still not sure what NFTs are? We'll get to that.

Just a few months ago, most of us had never heard of an NFT. Even once we figured out what they were, it seemed like maybe they'd be a short-lived fad, a distraction for the tech-savvy to funnel money into as the pandemic dragged on. But it seems NFTs are here to stay. The internet has exploded with digital artwork that's being bought and sold like crazy; in the third quarter of this year, trading volume of NFTs hit $10.67 billion, a more than 700-percent increase from the second quarter. Last month, both Coinbase and Sotheby's announced plans to launch NFT marketplaces. As a quick refresher in case you, like me, still don't totally get it: NFT stands for non-fungible token, and it's a digital certificate that represents ownership of a digital asset. The certificates are one-of-a-kind (that's the non-fungible part), are verified by and stored on a blockchain, and allow digital assets to be transferred or sold. Depending who you ask, NFTs were a thing as early as 2013 or 2014—but they didn't really hit headlines until earlier this year, when artists like Grimes and Beeple sold their digital creations for millions of dollars. Soon everyone from Jack Dorsey to George Church to the NBA started jumping on the NFT bandwagon. And you've probably heard about the bizarre phenomenon that is the Bored Ape Yacht Club. This is just the beginning of an ever-growing list of artists, celebrities, crypto-enthusiasts, and others who are betting NFTs are the future of collectible art. Re-enter Beeple, the American artist (whose given name is Mike Winkelmann) whose collage of 5,000 pieces of digital art, titled Everydays: The First 5000 Days, sold for $69 million in a Christie's auction in March. Another piece of his sold this week, and though it went for less than half what Everydays did, it's bringing a whole new twist to the NFT art world. The new work, titled Human One, is a life-sized 3D video sculpture, and Winkelmann called it “the first portrait of a human born in the metaverse.” It shows a person in silver clothing and boots, wearing a backpack and a helmet (which is something of a cross between that of an astronaut and a motorcyclist) trekking purposefully across a changing landscape. It was purchased for $29 million at Christie's 21st Century Evening Sale on Tuesday by Ryan Zurrer, a Swiss venture capitalist. introducing HUMAN ONE beeple (@beeple) October 28, 2021 The piece is a box whose four walls are video screens, with a computer at its base. It's over seven feet tall and can be viewed from any angle. But its key feature is the fact that it will be continuously updated, supposedly for the rest of Winkelmann's life. “I want to make something that people can continue to come back to and find new meaning in. And the meaning will continue to evolve,” he said. “That to me is super-exciting. It feels like I now have this whole other canvas.” The artist plans to change the imagery that appears in the box regularly. It will be sort of like having one of those digital photo frames, except instead of family and friends on a small, flat screen, who-knows-what will appear in 3D and larger than life. If some of the images in Everydays are any indication, Zurrer may end up seeing some pretty striking political commentary in his living room, or office, or wherever he chooses to keep Human One. “You could come downstairs in the morning and the piece looks one way,” Winkelmann said. “Then you come home from work, and it looks another way.” However, he won't be changing the piece according to any sort of schedule, but rather as the fancy strikes him—and, he noted, in response to current events. If Zurrer chooses to keep the piece in his home or another private location, that would establish a sort of artistic intimacy between him and Winkelmann, with Zurrer being privy to the artist's ideas and creativity in real time. Though Human One was doubtless an expensive and highly complex project, it's likely just the beginning of a whole new type of “l...

Episode interview with Stuart Lippincott, find his https://twitter.com/Stuz0r (twitter) and https://superrare.com/stuz0r (SuperRare). Time Stamps [0:53 - 4:39] Sabretooth starts by asking Stuart how he started with NFTs. Stuart started to join the NFT world because of the crazy money currently being made. Stuart's work is very futuristic with an utopian or dystopian feel and pairs with music bands. Kizu asks if there are any influencers that have remained consistent in his work. Stuart explains that he imagines a universe where all creatures and people all live in the same realm. Music is a large contributing factor to his art. [4:39 - 8:26] Stuart started out using https://www.autodesk.com/products/maya/overview (Maya 3D), the https://substance3d.adobe.com/plugins/substance-in-3ds-max/?sdid=JQVGW67L&mv=search&gclid=Cj0KCQjwt-6LBhDlARIsAIPRQcJyjlmUF4yYcugxKuuk6TtDrR3bTXWDyCUvF0QgbteROQIUOofYWyUaAgetEALw_wcB (3Ds Max), and now https://www.maxon.net/en/cinema-4d (Cinema 4D). Sabretooth asks if Stuart sees the tools as what he can do with them or seeks out tools to create what he wishes to create. Stuart landed on Cinema 4D because it is fairly fast and an easy user interface. He then started to use Octane Render. Octane Render would take a significant amount of time. When Octane came out for Cinema 4D, he challenged himself to learn all there was about the software. Then in late 2015, he came across https://www.beeple-crap.com/everydays (Beeple's Everydays). https://twitter.com/beeple (Beeple) uses Cinema 4D with Octane and Stuart really started to learn it then. With plugins and addons, Stuart tries to learn as many tools as he can to get his ideas across. [8:25 - 11:29 ] Kizu discusses how successful artists have a bigger following and others do not have that recognition. Stuart explains how previous to his first sale, he did not know how cryptocurrency worked. He then sold his first piece and continued to sell really well. Then one day the selling stopped. He took a couple of months break and then posted pieces that were popular on Instagram and Twitter. These did not sell either though. Despite his large Instagram following and his Twitter account, it is not the case. He is still trying to figure out his own place in the NFT world. [11:29 - 13:29 ] To explain this trend in Stuart's sales, Sabretooth gives his opinion on NFT's speculation premium. Sabretooth says that people are buying at a premium and that premium says that the price will go up. When the speculation premium was taken out of the market, sales started to decline and have not recovered at this time. Sabretooth asks Stuart to explain how much of his time is spent on client work versus NFTs. [11:29 - 16:50 ] From 2016 to this year, Stuart was doing client work and his Everyday Project. In July, he decided that he was done with his Everyday Project. His successes from this past year, allowed him to take the rest of the year off from his art. He has chosen to really focus on learning new tools though. Kizu is wondering if Stuart is learning a specific new effect or just adding to his toolbox? Stuart explains that he has a far goal to create worlds in augmented reality using Unreal. The observer would be able to experience a virtual reality scenario within his art. With there being so many tools available, he is always learning. It can all go into his work and be translated into Unreal. [16:50 - 22:49 ] Looking ahead to Stuart's future, Kizu asks what his ideal role would be. Stuart explains that he believes a creative director slash art director would be most fitting. He enjoys directing the vision, but also helping with work. Sabretooth has Stuart explain more on the Everyday Project that was made famous by Beeple and a previous show guest, Josh Pierce also subscribes to the process. Welcome to the cryptohunt jam where we spend one minute a day to explain crypto. In plain english. Today: Let's look at some examples of NFTs that sold for millions and speculate why. One to make mainstream media news was a digital collage called “Everydays: the First 5000 Days”. Interestingly sold by old-school auction house Christie's, this piece by digital artist Beeple went for almost 70 million dollars. Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, has since sold a few more NFTs for millions each. He is a well known artist and star in the NFT world, and thus his pieces have become highly collectible. Beeple is bullish on NFTs. He believes artwork will be consumed entirely on screens and NFTs are ideally suited for that. Now a completely different example: Charity auctions. Edward Snowden's “Stay Free” sold for about $5.5 million. It is an image showing the text of a court decision ruling that the NSA's mass surveillance violated the law. So what makes that artwork so valuable? People's willingness to give to a charitable cause. Whistleblower Snowden didn't pocket the money himself, but gave it to the Freedom of the Press Foundation, of which he is the president. And - yes, we've talked about them before - we can't end without mentioning those cryptopunks again. With current offers reaching over a 100 million dollars on some, they are one of the most prolific NFT collections ever, attracting speculators who can afford them. Listen to our previous podcast for more details on those. We hope those examples illustrate a few reasons that NFTs change hands for a lot of money. And tomorrow we talk about why there are so many different cryptocurrencies and tokens out there instead of just one or two. Today's guest is the reason so many new artists entered the NFT space. Since May 1, 2007 he has created one piece of artwork every single day in his now famous ongoing series called Everydays. In 2020 he minted a handful of these Everydays as NFTs and saw immediate success with many of his OG 1/1s selling for for over $100,000 when very few were watching or paying attention to this space. The success of his first couple drops got the attention of Christie's Auction House and resulted in their first collaboration with an NFT artist to celebrate 5,000 consecutive Everydays. On March 11 of this year, the now famous auction ended with a winning bid of over 69 million dollars and garnered mainstream attention that was extremely positive for the space. A now legend in the NFT community, it is my absolute pleasure to share the stage with BEEPLE aka Mike Winkelmann!

When Beeple's Everydays auction rocked the art market back in February, there was one aspect that dramatically differentiated the pieces: physical displays. Infinite Objects was the company behind those displays and has since partnered with a number of NFT artists and is now ready to expand. In this interview I discussed the company's new NFT product for artists and the founding story of the company.
In this episode of Desi Crypto Show, we have Twobadour from Metapurse. Metapurse is an NFT Powerhouse that purchased Beeple's Everydays for $69M~ and also spearheaded the B20, one of a kind experiment in Metaverse. Twobodour talks about his journey in Crypto and with Metakovan, also says "NFTs are Crypto" and his reasoning behind it and exciting things which are happening in the Metaverses. About Metapurse: The Metapurse is a crypto-based fund financed by Metakovan and operated jointly with Twobadour. They have collected one of the most iconics NFTs which have historic and cultural significance. They not only aim to collect meaningful stories, but also catalyze financial and cultural inclusion. There's probably a good chance that you heard the news that BEEPLE, the graphic artist born as Mike Winkelmann, had just sold the third most expensive piece of artwork for a living artist and thought to yourself, "WTF is a BEEPLE?" Or if you were me you said just a plain "WTF?" Sure, you probably knew a little bit about NFTs (Winkelmann had only just started working with NFTs in October 2020), but the fact that someone had paid $69,346,250 on March 11, 2021 for his work Everydays: the First 5000 Days, the massive JPEG collage of images from his Everydays series, kind of felt like either a game-changer, an insane hedge, a turning point, a blip, a hero moment, an insider moment, a gross use of money or a smart investment of someone who saw a landmark moment in digital art. Whatever it was, you had a reaction. Many were mad. Many in the establishment almost cried out that it was the end of art as we know it. To be honest, it all felt a little silly. Everyone ran to NFTs for some of that million dollar energy, and some of it worked, some didn't. Winkelmann himself was new to the platform of selling his images this way, but had already accumulated a massive audience for this Everydays series, creating a digital work and posting it everyday since 2007. Regardless of what the market did, of what his impact on NFTs has been just in a few short months, Winkelmann just makes art everyday. It's kind of his thing. On this episode of Radio Juxtapoz, we talked to BEEPLE about just that: making art everyday. We of course talk about the landmark auction and his thoughts on NFTs and his quite interesting advice to everyone joining the medium. We talk about the sudden criticism, what the media seems to have surmized about him from this sale, and what it means to have an audience before the wider public knew BEEPLE. He gives his insights about how artists will help make NFTs more environmentally friendly just through their desire and awareness that it needs to change. But like any disrupter of the art market and art consciousness, we just wanted to talk to BEEPLE about his craft, practice, humor and where he thinks this is all going. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 071 was recorded via Skype in London, San Francisco and Charleston on April 16, 2021. Alles stand still.

The First 5,000 Days,” sold to NFT Buyer Vingnesh Sundaresan aka @Metakovan for $69.9 million on March 11, 2021. The following week, in a down to the wire bidding war, Beeple sold another piece of his artwork, this time to Justin Sun, founder and CEO of the cryptocurrency platform Tron, for $6 million. (By the way, 100% of the profits are being donated to help offset NFT's carbon footprint.) Our host, Cirina Catania, has been a Beeple fan for years and was very pleased when he agreed, at NAB 2019, to take a break from his presentations in the Cinema 4D booth to speak with her. They had an interesting and very candid conversation about his life as a creator, family man, and … well… a bit of a rebel behind his prolific Cinema4D art. For those of you not familiar with the “Everydays,” here’s the scoop. Every single day without fail for the last 14 years, Mike has created new work and uploaded it for the world to see. He’s now behind some of the world’s most admired digital works. Many of you have been asking to hear the interview again. We are re-posting it here for you. This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re giving a nod to Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, who used something called NFT technology to sell the most expensive piece of digital artwork in history. This recent sale was a first for digital art, a first for Christie’s Auction Company in London and a first for Beeple himself. Why does this matter? Well, because it’s interesting for starters. Especially considering digital art has been a difficult market to monetize and track in the way that other art is handled. Plus, an NFT or Non-Fungible Token is a brand new system of buying and selling media in a way that has never been done before. This could very well change the way art, in particular digital art, is bought, sold and how records of provenance are maintained. What makes it even more interesting is the story of the art that was recently sold as well as the artist himself. Beeple hails from Charleston, SC and has designed works for a variety of famous musical acts, plus a slew of big name brands such as Coca-Cola. His work has been described as sci-fi meets pop culture meets politics. Additionally, for the last 13 years, Beeple has created a new and original piece of digital art each day. This monumental task became known as his “Everydays” collection and at the end of 13 years, or nearly 5,000 days, Beeple combined each piece into one larger mosaic. Just a couple weeks ago the mosaic was assigned an NFT and sent to Christie’s Auction where the opening bid began at $100. No one knew what might happen and it was a risk for all involved. But boy did that risk pay off. To the tune of $69 million. Tune in to learn about this new NFT technology and to discover more about the South Carolina artist called Beeple. References: White, Avery. We're back in 2021! This week we discuss the topic of the moment: NFTs or Non-Fungible Tokens (Nifties). With the recent sale of artworks such as Beeple's "Everydays" selling for $69 million, the art world is taking notice of the latest offshoot of cryptocurrencies. We discuss the concepts of reproducibility, ownership and ask what NFTs will mean for the future of digital art.

Hey everyone!Literally a couple of minutes ago this work of art by Beeple just sold for $69,346,250.Yes, SIXTY NINE MILLION DOLLARS.Don’t believe me? Here’s the link to the auction -> https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/beeple-first-5000-days/beeple-b-1981-1/112924Admittedly, the artwork is incredible. Here’s the description straight from Christies auction house…In May 2007, the digital artist known as Beeple set out to create and post a new work of art online every day. He hasn’t missed a day since, creating a new digital picture every day for 5,000 days straight. Individually known as EVERYDAYS, collectively, the pieces form the core of EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS, one of the most unique bodies of work to emerge in the history of digital art. That’s pretty amazing, a work of art that quite literally took 14+ years to create… some of the detail in them is absolutely bonkers as well. And it get’s crazier, still. This work is sold as an NFT. For those that haven’t seen the NFT craze stirring the internet, an NFT stands for NON FUNGIBLE TOKEN. Whatever that means, right?Basically it utilizes BLOCKCHAIN technology, similar technology that underpins BITCOIN, to VERIFY and assign OWNERSHIP to digital goods. Here’s what Christies said about this particular 69 million dollar NFT…The recent introduction of Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain technology has enabled collectors and artists alike to verify the rightful owner and authenticity of digital artworks. EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS will be delivered directly from Beeple to the buyer, accompanied by a unique NFT encrypted with the artist’s unforgeable signature and uniquely identified on the blockchain. MakersPlace, a digital marketplace, has issued the NFT for the piece. So, the question of the day is, would you pay $69,346,250 for a piece of art that ONLY exists in the digital world?Obviously I’m sure they will send the buyer a PRINT of the artwork, but again, this might make your head hurt….Anyone can get a PRINT of it….Even crazier..The PRINT, HANGING IN THE OWNER’S HOUSE, isn’t the ORIGINAL!The original ONLY exists online, on the blockchain. Just like the Mona Lisa ORIGINAL only exists in the Louvre in Paris…I know, trust me, this hurts my brain too. Here is what I’m taking away from it.1) New technology will ALWAYS warp your brain. Just like cars warped horse Owner’s brains back in the day, this is warping my brain right now. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT WON’T BE THE STANDARD AND LAUGHABLE THAT WE FOUND IT CONFUSING.2) Scarcity is quite literally FLYING OFF THE SHELVES. Anything that is scarce.BitcoinSmall BusinessesReal Estateand, yes, 69 million dollar digital artIf you aren’t invested in scarce ASSETS you are going to get crushed and I honestly feel bad for anyone who doesn’t know this information. 3) Just because you think it’s dumb doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable. I’ve heard so many intellectually lazy people call new technology “dumb” or a “fad” or a “scam” that if I had a dollar for every time they’ve said it… I’d be a bazillionaire. It isn’t dumb. The next 10 years and the rest of this century for that matter, will be DEFINED by crazy technologies like this that by definition will seem CRAZY to us and NORMAL within a few years. That’s just how it works. If you plan on being alive for the next decade you should probably just remove the word “dumb” from your vocabulary and start trying to understand what REALLY drives value in this day and age. Anyway, that’s what I’ve got for today, what do you guys think about Beeple?Crap? Amazing? Worth the money?Let me know in the comments and share this with someone if you want to blow their mind today.69,346,250. Wow. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
"Resilence is more than bouncing back from adversity. People who are resilient keep pursuing their goals in the face of challenges. Consequently, learning how to regulate your brain's motivational machinery is a key aspect of resilence." —Rick Hanson, Ph. D, author of Resilient: How to Grown an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength and Happiness Living well and successfully reaching our fullest potential in part resides in understanding what is and is not in our control. Once we understand what we have control over, for example, and for today's post/episode's purposes, the mind, then we need to be willing to take the time to learn how it functions and how we can use its talents to enhance the overall quality of our lives. Dr. Rick Hanson shares in the introduction of his book Resilience that "the brain is continually remodeling itself as you learn from your experiences. When you repeatedly stimulate a 'circuit' in your brain, you strengthen it." After reading his book, which is organized by the needs we have as human beings - safety, satisfaction and connection - readers discover the skills, and then the tools to build those skills to build our resilience. "True resilience fosters well-being, an underlying sense of happiness, love and peace." And in order to foster the sense of each of them and hardwire them into our being, we need to experience them, seek them out and consciously savor them so as to remember how to live each day consciously as we build a life we love living each day. Hanson asserts and I have to certainly agree, when we practice and improve our resilience in good times or seemingly benign moments in our everyday lives, we "will feel less anxiety and irritation, less disappointment and frustration and less loneliness, hurt and resentment. And when the waves of life come at you, you'll meet them with more peace, contentment and love in the core of your being." So let's start by looking at our everyday lives and discovering how we can strengthen the muscle, the skill, that is resilience. 1.Take care of your own well-being first "Being good to yourself is good for others. When people increase their own well-being, they usually become more patient, cooperative, and caring in their relationships." We can only give our best selves when we care for ourselves well. When our needs are met, we can help others who are in need of generosity, understanding and patience. Read/Listen to episode #242 for 31 Ways to Practice True Self-Care. 2. Notice and savor enjoyable moments Creating the habit of being self-compassionate is a learned skill. And with any skill, it takes conscious effort and repetition to habituate the skill into our default systems. Hanson advises, "Once you're having [an enjoyable] experience, feel it as fully as possible and take a little time —a breath or two or ten — to stay with it. The more often you do this, the more you will tend to hardwire psychological resources for yourself." Once you have strengthened this skill, you will be better able to utilize it during difficult as well as joyous times. ~Learn more about self-compassion and how to cultivate it in episode #122 3. Welcome Enjoyable Moments into Each Day Conscious living is thoughtful living to pay close attention to how our days are constructed. Now this doesn't mean we have to plan every minute of the day and it doesn't mean everything must be nose-to-the-grindstone work or striving for nothing but perfection. What Hanson encourages is to understand and find what is enjoyable about the tasks you both want to do and have to do. Completing a project at work for example, while the entire task may not be enjoyable, ask yourself, what is and focus on that. In so doing, you are more engaged, more attentive and more likely to give your best and have a more positive outcome. On the flipside, for those activities you enjoy, make sure you partake in them regularly and savor the enjoyment you derive from doing so. Each time you focus on the reward, the enjoyable part, the brain releases dopamine, norepinephrine and natural opioids which then prioritizes in your mind what actions it wants to continue to pursue unconsciously. So essentially, you are beginning to hardwire your brain for wanting to do things that you consciously know will add quality to your life whether the enjoyment comes from have-to tasks or want-to tasks. 4. Repeat the superpowers you want to be part of your brain's hardwiring "The more [neurons] fire together, the more they wire together. In essence, you develop psychological resources by having sustained and repeated experiences of them that are turned into durable changes in your brain." Hanson shares that our character strengths, mood, skillful ways, outlook, good habits, etc. are predominantly learned as only one-third are innate in our DNA. The remaining two-thirds are acquired through learning. This is good news, but it also means we have a massive responsibility in recognizing that we are who we either consciously or unconsciously choose to become. As Hanson coins, "who we learn to be". 5. Encourage Beneficial Experiences "See the jewels around you." The brain's negativity bias is programmed to protect us, and so it will bring to the forefront, if we aren't the master of our mind, all the negative in our days. However, when we understand why the brain is doing this, we can counteract it by seeking out, observing, savoring and incorporate more positive little moments into our day. From savoring your breakfast or that cold glass of water, observing the beauty of the day, or the happy step of your pup as you head out for your walk, when we pay attention to the good experiences, we are nurturing our well-being. Why? Because if we are regularly letting the negative take the stage of our attention, there is "wear and tear on your body and mind". 6. Understand the essence of learning What we learn, we become, and since two-thirds of who we become is learned, knowing how to learn is essential, so we can do it well and learn what will improve the quality of our everyday and overall lives. Hanson's acrynom for learning is HEAL (H - Have a beneficial experience; E - Enrich it, A - Absorb it; and finally, L — Link it to replace or soothe painful material). The first three steps are the essence of learning. With that said, we need to live consciously. We need to choose experiences that are beneficial or have the potential to be beneficial. To enrich each of these beneficial experiences, we need to be fully present, taking everything in, slowing down, looking for something we had not seen if we are experiencing something beyond the first time, and then become clear as to why the experience is valuable to you. (a more detailed list regarding how to enrich experiences is hared on page 58 of Hanson's book). Once we have enriched it, we need to savor the experience, or absorb it. To be clear, and Hanson points this out and I think this is vitally important to not misunderstand: Absorbing doesn't mean hanging on, clinging and not letting go. In fact, you are letting it go because you were never holding on to it, just noticing it, being present with the experience and appreciating it. Absorbing has to do with letting yourself feel good, letting yourself bask in the warmth of what has been part of your experience and in your own way, letting it become a part of you. Experiences can stay with us forever. Make sure the experiences that stick are wants that truly jewels. 7. "Let the Flowers Pull the Weeds" I love this analogy, and the neurology behind the concept demonstrates how we can rewire our mind to reframe or eliminate negative thoughts and unhelpful attitudes about life and replace them with beneficial ones. Hanson points out that practicing mindfulness will be a helpful tool to be able to grow flowers whilst bringing as well to your attention the weed you want to replace. Because when you are able to hold two thoughts simultaneously, it is then that the good can begin to replace the negative, as you are able to recognize that good that is true and begin to chip away at was no longer serving you. 8. Be Mindful of The Self-Critic and Strengthen the Inner Nurturer "There are two different attitudes or 'voices' inside us all, one that is nurturing and another that is critical, one that lifts up and one that weighs down. This is perfectly normal. The inner nurturer brings self-compassion and encouragement. The inner critic helps you recognize where you've gone wrong and what you need to do to set things right . . . for most people, the inner critic goes way overboard . . . it's big and powerful, while the inner nurturer is small and ineffective, which wears down mood, self-worth and resilience." The inner critic needs to be kept in check, and this can be hard to do when moments in life, people in our lives become frustrating or hard to work with. We can be excessively harsh on ourselves which is why in such moments, we especially need to have a strong inner nurturer. A simple truth to keep in mind is that overtime those of us who allow our inner critic to run rampant are actually less productive in what we are critical about, and ultimately, that bleeds into our overall quality of life the elevation of living well we are able to reach. 9. Practice "liking" more and "wanting" less "The root of [wanting] means 'lack'. It's natural to like things that are pleasurable, such as a sweet dessert with friends. But issues arise as we move from liking to wanting, from enjoying a meal together to insisting on the last piece of pie." When we let our "auto-wanting" take control, we are pulled from the present, we are infusing our minds with the belief that we are not enough or what we already have is not enough. This is draining physically and potentially financially. Instead, practice appreciating - window shopping, so to speak. Whenever you feel "any sense of pressure, compulsion or 'must-ness'", take a breath, recenter yourself and remind yourself that the advertisers are doing their job, but you can still appreciate the beauty, goodness, awesomeness, etc. without funding their cause. This is where the skill of being content will help tremendously. As was shared last week, in episode #244, contentment can be felt everyday, all day, as contentment is not dependent upon external sources. And when we are able to be content, it becomes easier to 'like' versus 'want'. 10. Healthy Intimacy Begins with Healthy Personal Autonomy "Paradoxically, in order to get the most out of 'we', you need to stay centered in 'me'." Intimacy as it appears in our lives can be cultivated with mere acquaintences as well as a romantic partner of 50 years. As defined in the book, intimacy is "to make familiar or known". And the knowledge of self and security within oneself is the foundation. Because when you are confident that you are able to take care of yourself, you can step forward to be engaged with others, knowing your limits, knowing your boundaries. And if necessary, knowing that if the limits or boundaries are not respected, you can step back and take care of yourself well. With the relationshps you begin to build or relationships you are currently in, assess if you are able to do the following things: fully express your thoughts and feelings ask for what you want trust your judgment if others disagree with you stand up to others If you are unable or were unable in past relationships that no longer are a part of your life, you may recognize you do not have full personal autonomy in that particular relationship. These may be relationships you either now recognize need to be stepped away from as you now can pinpoint why they don't feel right, or, if it is only one of the items on the list, you have a specific focus you can bring up to try to improve the relationship. "Much as autonomy enables intimacy, intimacy supports autonomy. Close and nurturing relationships help a person feel safe and worthy as an individual, which promotes a confident independent. In a positive cycle, autonomy and intimacy feed each other. Together, they make you more resilient." Moving forward, keep these abilities in mind as you should be able to exercise all four in a healthy relationship as too should the other person with you in the relationship, thus embodying the paradox shared in the above quote. We often hear the word "resilence" uttered during times of strife or hardship, but the truth is, as Dr. Rick Hanson points out, strengthening the tool or skill of resilience can elevate the quality of our everyday lives in all of the good moments that we have as well. As is often discussed here on TSLL and on the podcast, our mind is an amazing mechanism, and to understand how it works, have patience with the rewiring process if we are choosing to do so, can yield awesome outcomes for our life, enriching the journey and lead us where we truly want to go. Petit Plaisir —On the Basis of Sex ~Felicity Jones stars as Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg and Armie Hammer stars as her husband Marty Ginsburg screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman is Ginsburg's nephew wrote the script which was then approved by Ginsburg's daughter, Jane, a prominent figure in the legal world and in the film as well - she is currently a professor of law at Columbia University Ginsburg was one of just nine women in the Class of 1956 The question posed to the 9 women at their welcome dinner by the dean, played by Sam Waterston was verbatim what was said. When Marty was diagnosised with testicular cancer during his third year of law school, Ruth did collect notes from his friends and typed up his essays as he dictated them—a process that often began near midnight. When he finished around 2 a.m., she would turn to her own coursework. Regarding the case - Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue - While the legal side of Moritz’s case is accurate, Ruth didn’t fly to Denver to meet with him. It was Marty who made first contact, and he didn’t do so face to face. According to Ginsburg herself, “We met Charles E. Moritz for the first time in the fall of 1971, the night before the argument. He took us to dinner in Denver. He had to hire a babysitter for his mother.” Source for more details regarding the film and history from Slate.com https://youtu.be/28dHbIR_NB4 https://youtu.be/tYH9KJ_T6XM
